War in Ukraine today: latest news, October 16, 2022 (photo)

It has been the 235th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 18.00: 

The enemy is attempting to stand ground in the temporarily occupied territories, deter the actions of the Armed forces of Ukraine in some directions and launch the offensive towards Bakhmut and Avdiivka. 

The enemy is firing at Ukrainian positions along the entire contact line, erecting defensive constructions and conducting aerial reconnaissance. By violating the norms of the International humanitarian law, the enemy hits critical infrastructure and residential households. 

They launched one missile and ten air strikes, eight multi rocket launcher attacks. 

Over ten settlements, Strilecha, Terny, Kharkiv oblast, Pavlivka and Novsilka, Donetsk oblast, Pravdyne and Bilohirka, Kherson oblast, were attacked.

The situation did not significantly change towards Volyn and Polissia. Planned rotation of armed forces of belarus protecting the state border is underway. The territory of Ukraine is exposed to the threat of missile and air strikes, launch of attack “Shahed-136” UAVs from the territory of belarus.  

In other directions the enemy fired towards: 

Siversk with various artillery in the area of settlements of Senkivka, Hasychivka, Mykolaivka, Prohres, Chernihiv oblast and Bachivsk, Sosnivka and Pokrovka, Sumy oblast;

Sloboda with tanks, mortars, barrels and missile artillery in the area of Kozacha Lopan, Strilecha, Ohirtseve, Hatysche, Vovchanski Khutory, Zybyne, Zarichne and Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi, Kharkiv oblast; 

Kramatorsk with tanks and various types of artillery along the entire contact line in the areas of Hrehivka, Bilohorka, Luhansk oblast, Zarichne, Rozdolivka, Serebrianka and Yakovlivka, Donetsk oblast; 

Bakmut and Avdiivka with tanks, mortars, barrels and missile artillery along the entire contact line. 

The enemy struck over twenty five settlements towards Novopavlivsk and Zaporizhzhia, namey Vilne Pole, Vremivka, Velyka Novosilka, Novopil, Zolota Nyva, Vuhledar, Donetsk oblast and Zelenyi Hai, Scherbaky, Orikhiv and Charivne, Zaporizhzhia oblast. 

Over thirty five settlements were hit towards the South Buh, notably Bilohirka, Novooleksandrivka, Sukhyi Stavok, Kherson oblast and Shyrike, Kyselivka, Ternovi Pody and Stepova Dolyna, Mykolaiv oblast. 

The occupiers intensified filtration measures in Kherson oblast and started evacuation of the so called “public” institutions. Based on the available information, employees and property of banks and the pension fund are being relocated to the temporarily occupied Crimea from Kherson. 

Moral and psychological condition of civilians at russian border areas has reduced. It is specifically caused by the lack of medical staff who were previously mobilized and the increase in the number of wounded soldiers, which provokes disruptions in rendering medical services to civilians in belgorod region

Ukrainian defenders are holding the enemy and inflicting losses in manpower and equipment. 

Ukrainian aviation launched over twenty five strikes on the occupiers’ positions. Seventeen areas of buildup of weapons and equipment, four locations of anti missile and anti aircraft systems were affected. Moreover, Ukrainian air defense forces shot down one enemy UAV.  

Missile troops and artillery hit one command point of the enemy. 

Deputy head of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Hanna Maliar informed that the ratio of Ukrainian and russian troops’ losses in the south of Ukraine is about 1 to 6.5. She also added that the critical value is 1 to 8 since the enemy’s troops lose their morale completely. 

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine, 4 vessels, loaded with 140K tons of Ukrainian agrarian produce, left Odesa and South ports. Eaubonne bulker carrying 53.3 tons of wheat to Kenya is among them. In total agrarian produce was delivered to African, Asian countries and Europe.

According to the head of joint coordination press center of the Joined Forces of the South of Ukraine Natalia Humeniuk, the occupiers face challenges with weapons and equipment delivery due to the damage caused to the Crimean bridge. The situation in the south is still tense, since the enemy is attempting to сollect all available forces. 

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in the morning, at least seven settlements were under russian fire, specifically, villages of Chuhuiv, Dvorichna, Lyptsi and Vovchansk communities and Dvorichna settlement. During the day, at least 10 settlements were shelled.

Head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleh Syniehubov, informed that yesterday the enemy shelled settlements near the contact line and border with russia in Chuhuiv, Izium, Kharkiv and Kupiansk districts. According to the Regional Center for Emergency Medical Care, 3 people were hospitalized in Kupiansk district: two men aged 36 and 48 years old and a 69 year-old woman.

De-mining and restoration of critical infrastructure continues. The State Emergency Service’s pyrotechnic units defused 555 explosive ordnances.

Referring to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, wood and a farm building caught fire as a result of shelling in Zybyne border village of Vovchansk district.

Donetsk oblast

Ukrainian troops repelled russian attacks near Bakhmut, Berestove, Soledar, Marinka, Nevelske, Pobieda, Soledar, Spirne and Torske overnight. The enemy shelled seven settlements with Uragan and Grad MRLs, rockets, artillery and tanks. There were casualties. According to the police, 14 residential buildings, a kindergarten, a medical facility, a food industry and vehicles were destroyed and damaged.

Head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko, informed that russians killed 1 civilian in Bakhmut. In addition, bodies of 6 civilians killed during the occupation were found in Lyman. Another 3 people were injured yesterday.

Kostiantynivka suffered the most damage from this morning’s shelling. The enterprise’s outbuildings and the former preventorium building were damaged.

Also in the community, cluster shells hit Oleksandro-Shultyne, damaging a house. There were no casualties.

The day before, Fedorivka in Soledar community also was under fire, two people were injured.

Occupied Donetsk was shelled. Explosions and a fire near the “city administration building” occurred in the morning. Occupation authorities in Donetsk blamed Ukrainian troops for the shelling.

The Eastern Group of Forces Сouncillor, Serhii Cherevatyi, denied the invaders’ statement about the russian offensive on the recently de-occupied Lyman by Ukrainian forces. An area is being cleared and de-mined on the road to Lyman. A burnt-out convoy of cars was found on one of the roads leading into the city. An explosive device was found in one of the vehicles.

Mariupol Mayor’s Councillor, Petro Andriushchenko, reported that in Kalmiuske district, residents line up to get free bread.

Luhansk oblast

According to the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, more than 11 200 buildings, 479 industrial enterprises, 167 educational institutions and 64 hospitals were damaged or completely destroyed by the russian federation.

According to preliminary information, at least 118 sports facilities, 6 social security institutions, 115 cultural institutions, 37 administrative buildings, 7 administrative service centers, 7 railway stations and 48 life support facilities were damaged due to constant shelling and bombardment.

The General staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in the occupied Rubizhne, the servicemen from Chechen Republic started to evict civilians from private houses to accommodate their officers.

In Kramatorsk direction, russians shelled Bilohorivka, Charivne, Mala Tokmachka, Nadiia, Novoiehorivka, Pershotravneve, Rozdolivka, Serebrianka, Terny, Torske, Verkhnokamianske, Vyshneve and Zarichne settlements with tanks and various caliber artillery.

Yesterday, Defence Forces units repelled enemy attacks in Bakhmut, Berestove and Soledar in Bakhmut direction and Spirne and Torske in Kramatorsk direction.

The Defense Forces’ aviation launched 32 strikes. They hit 24 buildups of weapons and military equipment and 8 positions of anti-aircraft missile systems of the enemy. Moreover, Ukrainian air defense units shot down 6 UAVs and 1 enemy helicopter in different directions.

Rocket and artillery forces hit 3 buildups of manpower, weapons and military equipment, 1 ammunition depot, 7 enemy anti-aircraft warfares and other military objects.

Head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, Serhii Haidai, reported that russians are mining roads towards Keminna and Svatove, some bridges are already destroyed by the invaders. They are bringing large numbers of personnel and equipment to these areas. He also noted that he joined the proposal to reward whoever captures Girkin terrorist.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Ukrenergo reported that 7% less electricity was used in Kyiv oblast yesterday. Conscious power saving by residents of the region made it possible to spend the evening without forced shutdowns.

DTEK Kyiv Electric Networks called on business customers to limit the use of external lighting on facades of offices, restaurants and shopping centers to support the energy system. Capital residents are also urged to use power sparingly and warned of possible outages due to the complexity of infrastructure damage.

A memorial sign was opened in the capital in honor of Kyiv volunteers of the 112th Territorial Defense Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, who gave their lives for the freedom and independence of Ukraine. The monument was set on the territory of one of the military units where, in the first days of full-scale russian aggression, companies and battalions of volunteers from Kyiv were formed to defend the capital.

You can take a training course and become a volunteer of the State Emergency Service in Kyiv. The courses were organized by the Kyiv Emergency Service for those who want to help rescuers in wartime emergencies. In 14 days, the skills of tactical medicine, rescue in the event of a road accident, actions in the event of collapse of structures and receive the relevant certificates are taught. 

The premiere of the Kherson Theater named after Mykola Kulish “You can (not) stay away…” is taking place in the capital. In the new documentary directed by Yevhenii Reznichenko, the actors who were forced to leave their native homes due to the occupation share their experiences with the audience. This is a play about Ukrainian Kherson, about its resistance, about people who left the city and those who could not do it.

Zhytomyr oblast

In Radomyshl, the Alley of Glory was opened downtown in honor of compatriots who died in the war with russia. According to the chairman of Radomyshl TG Volodymyr Teterskyi, the names of 25 residents of the community who gave their lives in the struggle for the independence of Ukraine during eight years of war are named on the Alley of Glory. Later, a memorial building will be built at this place to commemorate the fallen heroes.

Five types of camouflage suits were developed and manufactured for the Armed Forces by volunteers from the “Zhytomyr Kalinky” center. The center started working on creation of kikimore in March. Since then, the costumes have been constantly transformed and improved.

More than two hundred people took part in the “Wild Race” race in Zhytomyr. During the five-hour campaign, its participants collected over 130K hryvnias for a vehicle to the military. The second race was laid out in the form of a picture by the “ZSU” GPS track to express gratitude to the defenders of Ukraine.

Sumy oblast

There were 8 shellings from artillery and mortars in the oblast. 104 explosions and 1 airstrike with 6 missiles were recorded. The SBGS reported that the communities of Velika Pysarivka, Krasnopillia, Richky, Mykolaivka, Esman, Shalygine and Bilopillia were attacked.

Rescuers set up recharging points for residents of ten settlements of Shostka district, left without power after enemy strikes on infrastructure facilities. Employees of the State Emergency Service used generators to operate 11 mobile phone charging stations.

The Sumy RMA reported that hospitals were given special equipment to provide unlimited access to the Internet for servicemen undergoing treatment. The company Vodafone Ukraine has provided unlimited tariffs for access to the Internet for free.

A charity fair was held in Svesa in support of the Ukrainian army. Students of the Sunday school together with their parents prepared pastries, artists of the Svesa Palace of Culture prepared a patriotic concert, patriotic pictures for Ukrainian defenders were drawn by students of the psycho-neurological boarding school.

Chernihiv oblast

Semenivka and Horodnia communities of Chernihiv oblast were attacked. As reported in the SBGS, in total more than 25 mortar and barrel strikes were recorded.

The NEC “Ukrenergo” reported that the Chernihiv oblast became the most conscious region in terms of electricity consumption. Its residents reduced their electricity consumption by 20%. Thanks to this, Kyiv and the central regions of Ukraine spent the evening without planned power outages.

Volunteers who work on the ruins of houses in Bobrovytsia neighborhood  in Chernihiv and in Novoselivka settlement have already dismantled hundreds of pieces of rubble. During the summer, entire teams of enterprises and organizations, residents of neighboring communities of the oblast, as well as foreign volunteers from Belgium, Romania, and Georgia voluntarily joined the work. According to the volunteers, winter will not be an obstacle to continue the volunteer movement to restore housing.

The Mena City Council reported that teachers of the Mena community received 23 chromebooks to organize the educational process online. This became possible as part of agreements between the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and Google. 

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Russian terrorists are commiting new crimes. According to the head of the regional council Mykola Lukashuk, Nikopol district was attacked with MLRS Grad and heavy artillery late in the evening. A man born in 1975 was injured in Nikopol. He received shrapnel injuries and is currently in the hospital. The enemy attacked the private sector. In the city, almost three dozen residential buildings were damaged, farm buildings, a dozen cars, an industrial enterprise, and power lines were damaged. About 1 500 households are currently without power, emergency crews are already working. The occupiers also struck the Marhanets community twice. 

According to the head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration, Valentin Reznichenko, russian troops also struck the Marhanets community with anti-aircraft missiles this evening. 

Vinnytsia oblast

The Department of Social Policy of the Vinnytsia City Council reported that over 55 000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) have already received assistance from the Vinnytsia Humanitarian Center of Things since April. Most IDPs need warm clothes. 

Poltava oblast

Cherkasy oblast

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to detailed information from the General Staff, the Defense Forces destroyed an ammunition depot and injured more than 20 occupiers in Marfopil. 10 units of military equipment were destroyed and up to 40 servicemen were injured in Tokmak. Up to 30 occupiers were injured in Polohy. 7 units of military equipment were destroyed and about 40 enemy servicemen were wounded in Kamianets-Dniprovska. The number of killed, which the occupiers are trying to hide carefully, is being clarified.

The number of shelling of the regional center by S-300 missiles decreased after the strikes inflicted by our Armed Forces on enemy equipment. This was reported by the head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, Oleksandr Starukh.

On the night of October 16, the occupiers destroyed two schools in Polohy district. The educational institution was nearly completely destroyed in the village of Vozdvyzhivka. The occupiers also destroyed a school in the village of Dobropillia.

On October 15, the russian occupiers attacked the village of Komyshuvakha. Households on two streets were damaged. 

Shyroke community has already welcomed 2 590 internally displaced persons. They are placed mainly in private homes, with relatives. There are also shelters. Hot meals were also organized for displaced people. The community provides meals for approximately 1 200 displaced people in 5 settlements every day, except Sunday. IDPs also receive humanitarian aid (food kits, hygiene products), psychological support and have the opportunity to attend master classes.

Mykolaiv oblast

The enemy launched a rocket attack on the Bereznehuvate community. As a result, the residential building was damaged. A fire broke out in an outbuilding. There were no casualties.

As a result of the night shelling of Shyroke community, three houses, farm buildings and garages were significantly damaged. There were no human losses.

The enemy attacked Mykolayiv oblast using the coastal missile complex “Bastion” with one cruise missile of the Onyx type from the temporarily occupied Crimea. The port infrastructure and water area in Ochakiv was shelled with a 120-caliber mortar. There were no losses.

Our aviation struck the enemy manpower and equipment buildup in Mykolaiv and Bashtanka districts.

About 800 high-rise buildings were damaged by shelling in Mykolaiv. 206 of them have a damaged roof. Currently, construction crews have already boarded up the windows in the apartments and entrances in half of the damaged buildings. Communal workers have already repaired about 60 roofs. Work is currently underway at 13 buildings.

On October 16, a new purified water dispensing point was opened in Mykolaiv. A well and a modular water reverse osmosis station were installed here. Water can be collected every day from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Water will not be provided during an air alert.

Odesa oblast

The enemy’s main efforts in the Black Sea operational zone are focused on maintaining a favorable operational regime and controlling civilian shipping in the northwestern part of the Black Sea.

The number of enemy ships in the Black Sea has decreased to 6 ships, which are sheltering behind Cape Tarkhankut along the coast of Crimea. 2 cruise missile carriers with a total volley of up to 10 Kalibrs and 1 enemy large amphibious ship are on standby.

Oj October 16, 4 ships with 140K tons of Ukrainian agricultural products were sent from the ports of Odesa and Pivdenny. This was reported by the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine.

Kherson oblast

The situation in the South Buh direction is consistently tense, but under the control of the Defense Forces. Active actions to consolidate our positions in the liberated territories continue. Stabilization measures are ongoing in de-occupied settlements.

The enemy conducts an active defense along the entire contact line, tries to establish logistics, and regroups to distribute forces. The enemy continues to use unmanned aerial vehicles in Bashtanka, Beryslav and Kherson districts to detect the position of our troops and adjust artillery fire.

During the night, attacks on the positions of our units continued using MLRS, barrels and mortars, and army aircraft strikes.

In the evening, the enemy tried to launch a sabotage and reconnaissance group, up to 7 people, towards de-occupied Tryfonivka. Having suffered losses in a shooting battle, the enemy retreated.

The enemy launched 4 air strikes on our positions using three attack helicopters and a pair of attack aircraft. During the day, the de-occupied part of the Dnipro right bank in Kherson oblast was shelled with almost twenty rockets. The enemy fired from MLRS Grad from the left bank. Losses and destruction of infrastructure are being clarified.

Our aircraft struck at the deployment of anti-aircraft defense in Beryslav and Kakhovka districts. 2 ammunition warehouses were destroyed in the Beryslav district.

Residents of de-occupied Velyka Oleksandrivka received humanitarian aid. The settlement was badly affected by hostilities and occupation by the russian military.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Two additional checkpoints were set up on one of the roads between Volyn and Rivne oblasts. Checkpoints appeared during the week.

Students of the 4th grade of Lutsk Lyceum # 9 collected money to help the fighters of the Volyn Territorial Defense. Using the funds collected, the children bought a cast iron stove and goodies. The children gave the soldiers hand-woven patriotic blue-yellow bracelets.

Zakarpattia oblast

The Department of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports of Mukachevo reported that in Mukachevo school # 3 two shelters were set up. To this end, almost UAH 18 million was allocated from the city budget.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The RMA reported that from the Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, portable systems where soldiers can take a shower and wash clothes will be sent to the fighters. These complexes will provide soldiers with access to hot water even in field conditions, because they can operate using generator power and heating from alternative types of fuel (firewood).

Mayor of the city, Ruslan Marcinkiv, announced that aid was sent from Ivano-Frankivsk to the 7th Rifle Battalion.

In Ivano-Frankivsk, a memorial board to the fallen Hero from Kolodiivka Vasyl Lialyk was opened. In March 2022, Vasyl was mobilized into the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He defended Ukraine in the ranks of the 14th separate mechanized brigade. He heroically died while performing a combat mission on May 20 in Donetsk oblast.

Bohdan Kruhlik, a defender from Kolomyia region who fell in the war, was posthumously awarded the Order For Courage of the 3rd degree. Pushkin Street in Pechenezhyn was renamed in honor of the fallen Hero.

Lviv oblast

In the children’s hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv, doctors continue to fight for the life of 14-year-old Vlad from Lyman, who miraculously survived the russian missile attack. The boy was drawing in his room when a russian rocket hit his house. The child cannot walk and eat on his own, because numerous debris damaged his stomach and spine.

Rivne oblast

Several roadblocks were removed in Rivne oblast. The RMA informed that it was done in compliance with the order of the oblast officials, according to which the number of roadblocks on the territory of Rivne oblast should have been brought into line long ago by dismantling redundant objects.

Head of the RMA, Vitaliy Koval, announced that from October 17, face-to-face training in the institutions of Rivne oblast will take place only if such decision was made by the administration of this institution.

The City Council of Varas reported that Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with the soldiers of the Territorial Defense Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and presented them state awards. Among the awardees are two servicemen from Rivne oblast.

In Rivne, a monument to residents of Rivne oblast who were repressed and evicted by the Soviet authorities in the period 1940-1950 was erected.

Ternopil oblast

In the village of Velyki Hai, a charity kitchen was set up due to the support of the Social Service project of the UGCC and the financial support of Emergency_appeal.

In Koziv community, a memorial complex to the soldiers fallen in the russian-Ukrainian war of 2014-2022 was opened and sprinkled.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Head of the RMA, Serhii Gamalii, announced that humanitarian aid, namely a car, drones, warm things for the military, food, was sent to the fighters at the front. 

Chernivtsi oblast

The City Council of Sokyrian reported that the urban territorial community received fire trucks from the twin-city of Arensburg.

The City Council of Mariupol reported that the YaMariupol center will open in Chernivtsi next week.

In Chernivtsi oblast, 57 schools will receive $3K each from the international fund UNICEF. Schools can spend money on current renovation of premises, preparation for the heating season or purchase of teaching equipment.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Germany provided Ukraine with 16 Biber armored tank bridge-laying vehicles. In addition, Germany supplied Ukraine with 10 pontoon bridge machines. According to the German government, as of mid-October, Germany provided Ukraine with military aid in the amount of $1.5 billion.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielus Landsbergis offered allies of Ukraine to pay for the work of Starlink.

Minister of Defense of France, Sebastien Lecornu, announced that his country will receive up to 2K Ukrainian servicemen who are to undergo military training within a few weeks.

Romania will transfer $1.4 million to the NATO fund for the defense of Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and Jordan.

EU candidate countries North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania and Ukraine, potential candidate country Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as European Free Trade Association countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, join the eighth package of EU sanctions against russia.

Deputy Prime Minister of Canada, Khrystia Freeland, said that russia should be excluded from the G20 and the International Monetary Fund.

Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz called for reforming and expanding the European Union, as well as banning the principle of unanimity in decision-making. Olaf Scholz promised Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia support on the way to join the EU.

Mayor of Budapest, Gergey Korachon, criticized the Orban government for the agreement with putin on the purchase of russian gas in Hungary. The mayor said that Orban’s government is harming the country’s economy and putting the country on the losers’ side.
