War in Ukraine today: latest news, November 20, 2022 (photo)

It has been the 270th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm: 

The units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine repelled attacks of the occupiers in the areas of settlements of Bilohorivka, Luhansk oblast and Spirne, Yakovlivka, Bakhmutske, Bakhmut, Opytne, Klischiivka, Donetsk oblast. 

The enemy launched 2 missiles on the civil infrastructure of Kupiansk and 10 multi rocket launcher attacks on the positions of Ukrainian troops along the entire front line. 

The situation did not significantly change towards Volyn, Polissia and Siversk. No signs of forming assault troops were detected. 

The republic of belarus continues to support the armed aggression of belarus against Ukraine by providing them with its infrastructure, territory and airspace. Russian military aircraft almost daily perform flights in the airspace of the republic of belarus. Mig-31K aircraft take off from the airport of Machulischi, carrying Kinzhal hypersonic missiles capable of attacking the targets on the territory of Ukraine. Hence Ukraine has to get the air raid alert on so often in all regions of Ukraine. 

There are still some enemy’s military units stationed in the border areas of Bryansk and Kursk regions. 

Towards Sloboda, the enemy shelled the settlements of Dvorichna, Ohirtseve, Strilecha, Starytsia, Chaikivka, Kharkiv oblast. 

Towards Kupiansk and Lyman, the enemy is in the defensive on the occupied positions, fires from mortars, barrels and rockets towards Krokhmalne, Tabaivka, Kharkiv oblast; Novoselivske, Makiivka, Ploschanka, Nevske, Luhansk oblast and Berestove, Donetsk oblast. 

Towards Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Novopavlivka, the enemy focuses its main efforts on the offensive. The enemy shells from tanks and all types of artillery in the area of settlements of Andriivka, Bakhmut, Bakhmutske, Bilohorivka, Verkhniokamianske, Vesele, Vremivka, Vuhledar, Klischiivka, Maiorsk, Opytne, Rozdolivka, Paraskoviivka, Soledar, Spirne, Yakovlivka, Donetsk oblast. 

Towards Zaporizhzhia, the occupiers are on the defensive. The settlements of Vyschеtarasivka, Huliaipole, Dorozhnianka, Zaliznychne, Novopil, Orikhiv, Chervone, Zaporizhzhia oblast were attacked. 

Towards Kryvyi Rih and Kherson, the enemy conducts the defensive operations of the fixed positions and improves defensive lines. The enemy was firing from tanks, barrels and rockets in the area of settlements of Antonivka, Veletenske, Novokaira, Novotiahynka, Poniativka, Tokarivka and the city of Kherson. 

In Kakhovka, russian occupiers continue to loot and rob. They leave locals without vehicles, motorcycles and even bikes.

The enemy is suffering losses. About 100 wounded russian soldiers were delivered to the local hospital in Skadovsk, Kherson region.

Based on the available information, the buildup of manpower was struck on November 19.  Over 100 occupiers were wounded in the area of settlements of Polohy, Kamianka, Mykhailivka and Enerhodar, Zaporizhzhia oblast the occupiers lost over 100 soldiers. About 20 military equipment units and 2 ammunition depots were destroyed. Moreover, the convoy of the enemy’s military equipment was eliminated in Syrotyne, Luhansk oblast.   

Ukrainian defense forces launched 6 air strikes: 3 – on the buildup of manpower, equipment and weapons, and 3 – on the positions of anti missile and anti aircraft systems.  

The rocket forces and artillery of the Armed Forces of Ukraine hit 2 command points, the ammunition depot, the buildup of manpower and military equipment and other 2 key targets of occupiers.  

According to the General Prosecutor Andriy Kostin, 700 bodies, most of them civilians, were found in the freed territories in Kharkiv, Kherson and Donetsk oblast. He also added that in these regions 20 places where Ukrainians were detained and tortured were detected. More crimes were recorded in Kharkiv region.

IAEA and Enerhoatom informed that there were more than 10 strikes in an approximate vicinity to Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.  Some buildings, systems and equipment were damaged following the explosion. IAEA experts are now in contact with the station management and continue to monitor the situation. 

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to a report of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the invaders are performing demonstrative and provocative actions on the territory of the border districts of Belgorod region. The enemy continues to defend the russian-Ukrainian border, conducting demonstrative and provocative actions. They attacked with mortars near Starytsia settlement.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine noted that russian troops continue shelling Kharkiv oblast with mortars, barrel and rocket artillery. Krokhmalne and Tabaivka villages were attacked.

Head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleh Syniehubov, reported that Kharkiv was not shelled yesterday. Chuhuiv, Izium and Kupiansk districts were under russian artillery fire.

The invaders launched two missile attacks on the infrastructure of Kupiansk. As a result of the shelling of the grain elevator, a fire broke out in an area of 300 square meters. In addition, private buildings and outbuildings were damaged.

A 54-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man were hospitalised as a result of shelling in Kupiansk district. Both received blast injuries and shrapnel wounds, the patients are in critical condition.

Pyrotechnic groups continue demining Kharkiv oblast. 269 explosive ordnance were defused.

Head of Velykyi Burluk community, Viktor Tereshchenko, said that about 50% of pensioners have not yet received any payments and people have been living without pensions for 8 months.

Donetsk oblast

Head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko, informed that russians injured 2 civilians in Bakhmut and Vuhledar.

The night in Donetsk oblast was relatively calm. It was loud mainly in the north of the region.

In Donetsk direction, russians shelled Avdiivka with Grad multiple rocket launchers once again. They hit downtown. There were no casualties.

In Horlivka direction, there were isolated attacks near Bakhmutske, Minkivka, Rozdolivka and Yakovlivka of Soledar community and on the outskirts of Toretsk community. In Chasiv Yar community, russians hit an infrastructure facility without casualties. The facility continues to operate.

In Lysychansk direction, massive shelling of Torske and Zarichne in Lyman communities did not stop. At night the enemy shelled Sviatohirsk. Aftermath is being investigated.

Mariupol Mayor’s Councillor, Petro Andriushchenko, reported that a new wave of “сleanup (purge)” will begin by the order of Pushilin to suppress public dissatisfaction. The problem is that the gauleiters of Donetsk oblast have prescribed official decisions on the granting of new housing as compensation for the lost one so that it is impossible for Mariupol residents to get it.

Luhansk oblast

At Kupiansk and Lyman directions, russians tried to keep the defense on the occupied borders.

Enemy shelled Hrekivka, Makiivka, Nevske, Novoiehorivka, Novoselivske, Ploshchanka and Stelmakhivka  with mortars, barrel and rocket artillery.

According to the updated information of the General Staff, on November 19 the enemy’s manpower concentration was hit. A convoy of enemy vehicles was destroyed near Syrotyne settlement, located near the temporary regional center of Luhansk oblast.

Head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, Serhii Haidai, reported that not hundreds, but much more russian soldiers have been moved from Kherson to Luhansk oblast. According to him, the invaders have mined almost all forest belts, and recently mobilized russians sometimes surrender in dozens.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Military exercise involving units of Kyiv defense forces and military equipment continue on the outskirts of Kyiv. According to the command of the Land Forces, Ukrainian troops are practicing their skills and abilities on land, water and in the air. The military personnel are tasked to carry out the reconnaissance of the enemy forces and engineering equipment located in the area, to plan long-range fire attack, conduct counter-offensive operations, provide first aid, and evacuation from the battlefield.

A rally involving the relatives of captured Ukrainian defenders was held in Kyiv to mark the half-year anniversary of soldiers’ evacuation from Azovstal. The participants of the event wanted to draw the attention of Ukrainian society and the world to the catastrophic situation with Ukrainian prisoners of war held by russia, ignoring the norms of the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

Reconstruction of 101 Tower business center in Kyiv, damaged by russian missile attack on October 10, will cost at least $10 million. According to Andriy Levin, the head of the Valprim AMC, the damage incurred to the building was larger than it looks from the outside – not only the glass facade was damaged, but also engineering systems, interior walls, equipment, and furniture.

HOPE Mission’s Project “Emergency Assistance for Conflict-Affected IDPs and Communities in Ukraine” is being implemented in Sviatoshynskyi district, Kyiv. The project is funded by the USAID Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance.

The Bucha City Council has reported that all old ambulances will be repaired in Kyiv oblast and sent to the frontline for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The project was initiated by the Kyiv Regional Council together with the Ukraine Friends NGO. The first four vehicles have already been delivered to the military. In the upcoming weeks, it is planned to repair up to three dozen more ambulances.

Since the full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine, the official website of the OCU states that 110 communities of Kyiv oblast have already decided to join the autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine at the general meeting. 

Next spring, 125 000 tulips donated by the Kingdom of the Netherlands will bloom in downtown Kyiv. They were planted in the form of a symbolic flag of yellow and dark purple tulips on Maidan Nezalezhnosti near the inscription “I love Ukraine”.

Zhytomyr oblast

“Cultural Forces” and volunteers from Zhytomyr visited de-occupied Kupiansk. Famous Ukrainian artists brought support, hugs, smiles, and most importantly unity  to the town. This time, the concert was attended by the founder of the “cultural forces” Kolia Serha, rapper Oleksandr Yarmak, and TV and radio host Volodymyr Ostapchuk. Zhytomyr residents delivered food, warm clothes, bicycles, guitars and books in Ukrainian to the town. “After de-occupation, it is very important to restore people’s faith that Ukraine has not abandoned them, that they are important,” said Kolia Serha.

Over 40 million trees have been planted by foresters of Zhytomyr oblast in the state forest fund. Forestry enterprises have reforested 15% more than planned for the year, despite the fact that some of the lands of state forestry enterprises are located along the border with belarus, where management is currently difficult.

Dry soups, milk porridges, and energy snacks for the military of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are prepared by the Nizhyn volunteer organization “Wolf Cub Pack”. They do everything from scratch – prepare raw materials, wash, clean, grind, dry and pack them. The employees of the Vertiyivka community kindergarten help them. They make pastille and sweet chips. Almost 6 500 packages of finished products have already been delivered to Ukrainian defenders.

Sumy oblast

The “North” Operational Command has reported that within a day, the russians opened fire twice at the border areas of Sumy oblast. The fire was concentrated on the village of Vovkivka of Shalyhine community. There were 24 incoming shells presumably fired from 120 mm mortar and from the territory of russia. Nova Sloboda of Esman community was also attacked. There were 7 incoming shells presumably fired from artillery.

According to Dmytro Zhyvytskyi, the head of Sumy Regional Military Administration, almost a quarter of a million consumers in Sumy oblast were left without electricity. Scheduled blackouts were implemented in Sumy and the oblast, as well as emergency outages: due to the latter, residents of 8 communities were left without electricity.

The Mayor of Trostianets Yuriy Bova reported that Trostianets hospital received equipment for a dental office from the Swiss volunteer organization. The dental unit has multimedia equipment, screens and other elements of modern dentistry. Setting up and training of staff will be carried out by one of the professional Kyiv clinics.

A resident of Okhtyrka Dmytro Dobromyrsky put a memorial plaque on the Hoverla with the inscription “Okhtyrka is a hero town”. The man wrote about it on his Facebook. The plate with the inscription was made by an Okhtyrka company. The owners refused to take money for the work after they learned about Dmytro’s intentions.

Chernihiv oblast

France provided residents of Chernihiv oblast with generators, construction materials, and tablets. This information was posted on Twitter by the Embassy of France in Ukraine. “France, especially the Ile-de-France region, continues to support Chernihiv oblast,” the message stated.

Serhiy Anischenko, the head of the Chernihiv Regional Forestry and Hunting Range Administration, has reported that residents of border communities of Chernihiv oblast receive free firewood. Firewood is provided to the war-affected communities of the oblast: Snovsk, Horodnia, Semenivka, and Novhorod-Siverskyi. First of all, assistance is provided to vulnerable and privileged categories of the population.

According to Viacheslav Chaus, the head of Chernihiv RMA, on November 21, the crossing of the Desna near Chernihiv will be closed from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Routine and other works are scheduled to be carried out.

The Nosivka Town Council has reported that education workers of Nosivka delivered over 100 hand-woven camouflage nets to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Residents of Nosivka community arranged places for various volunteer activities: collecting parcels, pouring trench candles, and weaving nets. Employees of educational institutions were among the first who gathered to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Nikopol region was shelled at night. The invaders struck civilian communities  Chervonohryhorivka, Marhanets, Myrove and Nikopol with about 80 shells from Grad MRLs and heavy artillery. 

Head of the Dnipro Regional Council, Mykola Lukashuk, informed that one man born in 1963 was injured as a result of shelling in Nikopol. Three cars and three farm buildings were destroyed. The shelling damaged the dormitory of an educational institution, more than two dozen residential buildings and farm buildings, gas furnaces, and electricity networks. In other communities, private households and farm buildings were affected. 

Vinnytsia oblast

An interactive map was launched in Vinnytsia, where citizens can check which establishments are open during power outages.

Poltava oblast

English classes are organized in Poltava for internally displaced children and Poltava residents within the framework of the “Shelter Poltava” charity project.

Since the full-scale war began, the employees of the Novosanzhar Lyceum have been sewing military ammunition for the fighters defending Ukraine. The production of equipment was organized on the basis of the school workshop. Production materials are brought by lyceum workers and community residents.

Cherkasy oblast

In Cherkasy, the Center of social services, relocated from Popasnaia, started to provide services to internally displaced persons from the Luhansk oblast who are in difficult life circumstances.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the police report, occupiers shelled civil infrastructure in the area of 12 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast over the past day. The military administration reported about 30 reports of destruction of civilian houses and infrastructure due to russian shelling.

Civilians were evacuated from the temporarily occupied territory. 65 people, including 18 children, were evacuated.

The territory of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, located in the temporarily occupied Enerhodar, was shelled more than 10 times. The IAEA reported that some buildings, systems, and equipment were damaged. Experts added that none of the explosions have been critical for nuclear safety. 

The National Resistance Center informs that russians are deploying military equipment on the territory of hospitals and schools in Zaporizhzhia oblast. About 5 vehicles of the russian invaders are located in the yard of the maternity hospital in the village of Mykhailivka. This means that the occupiers are using the hospital as a human shield. At the same time, it is known that the russians also place their equipment on the territory of private houses. There have been recorded cases of russian equipment deployed on the territory of educational institutions when the educational process was ongoing, which is also a war crime.

Mykolaiv oblast

At night, the russians struck the water area and the settlement in Ochakiv community with MLRS. As a result of the shelling, a fire broke out in an outbuilding. the military administration informed that detailed information was being clarified.

Firefighters continued to work on demining the territory of Mykolaiv oblast liberated from russians. According to the State Emergency Service press service, the enemy mined forests, fields, houses, infrastructure facilities, and playgrounds. Today, 9 groups of 47 pyrotechnics and 17 special vehicles are involved in the work.

The press service of Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration reported that as of November 20, 13 531 civilian objects have been partially or completely damaged since the beginning of the russian invasion in Mykolaiv oblast. Currently, work is in progress to restore the gas and electricity supply in the settlements affected by the war. As of today there is no electricity, water supply, sewerage in 88 settlements of Mykolaiv oblast. Rescue units removed 41 flammable objects yesterday, to eliminate the consequences of the russian attack.

A voluntary evacuation is being carried out in the region. In total, 27 663 people have been evacuated. 

Odesa oblast

According to the military administration, the situation in Odesa oblast remains under control. Defense forces continue to perform their combat tasks. According to the spokesman, 8 russian ships are on combat duty in the Black Sea, including 1 Kalibr cruise missile carrier with a whole volley of 4 missiles.

Power engineers and the region’s leadership managed to balance the work of the region’s energy system as much as possible. Command spokesman Serhiy Bratchuk also noted that “grain corridors” continue to operate in Ukraine. Thus, on Saturday, 8 vessels with 342 thousand tons of agricultural products for the countries of Africa, Asia, and Europe left the ports of Greater Odesa.

Odesa administration website reports that another group of children was sent from Odesa to a safe city. Thirty-four children went on their first trip from the orphanage in Odesa to Ankara with accompanying persons. Mayor of Odesa Hennadiy Trukhanov thanked the first ladies of Ukraine and Turkey for making the temporary shelter for children possible, where all kids are provided with comfortable living conditions and upbringing. Earlier, children from Odesa orphanages travelled to Lithuania – 46 children and Chernivtsi – 59 children. After the barrage of shells of Ukrainian infrastructure by russia, Odesa residents were left without electricity for more than three days. 

Kherson oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that russian troops fired from tanks, cannons, and rocket artillery at the areas of 4 settlements of the region and the city of Kherson. According to the headquarters, russian occupiers are massively stealing vehicles from residents of Kakhovka district.

Ordinary life is returning to the liberated Kherson oblast as far as possible during the war. The Head of the Military Administration informed that people who survived the occupation received necessary assistance, and business and state institutions are restoring their work. Specialists are working around the clock to restore the destroyed communications.

Kherson met the first train since February 24. The postal carriage with the delivery of parcels, press, and food also arrived. Mobile operators are also resuming their work: 52 bases and 3 mobile stations have been restored in the region. Gas distribution stations in two settlements have been repaired. More than 6 300 consumers in 13 settlements now have a gas supply. Periodic centralized water supply was restored in 5 settlements.

Explosive experts of the National Police inspected almost 12 hectares of territory and seized 125 explosive items. Pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service inspected another 9.5 hectares of territories and seized 411 explosives.

Kherson region received humanitarian aid from other regions of Ukraine. They brought food sets, drinking water, medicines, hygiene products, generators, building materials, clothes, essential goods, and other assistance. According to the head of the military administration, charitable and volunteer organizations are actively helping Kherson oblast. More than 10 thousand food sets and 80 tons of food, 4 200 hygiene kits, drinking water, 5 000 blankets, clothes, electric generators, 300 stoves, and other necessary things were delivered for the needs of the residents of the region. 

The russian military continues to rob the left-bank part of Kherson oblast.The first deputy chairman of the regional council Iurii Sobolevskyi  said that they are taking away everything of value by trucks. According to him, the cases of looting have reached such a scale that the occupation “authorities” have banned trucks from leaving the territory of the temporarily occupied region without special permission.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The emergency medical aid brigade of Volyn, which provided medical aid to the population in the liberated territory of Kherson oblast, has returned home.

At the school in the village of Nuyno a fair was held. Students together with their parents prepared homemade pastries. The collected UAH 27K were donated to the military.

Zakarpattia oblast

The RMA reported that Zakarpattia sent 55 generators of various capacities to Kherson oblast.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The Ukrainian Veterans’ Fund of the Ministry of Veterans’ Affairs re-launched the Varto 2.0 veteran business financing program. Under this program, veterans, as well as families of fallen or deceased defenders, can receive from UAH 500K to UAH 1 million for the development of their own business.

Lviv oblast

One hundred people who lost their homes due to the police attack received 30 temporary apartments in Lviv oblast. An apartment building in the village of Neslukhiv, the Novoyarychivska community, was renovated for them. To equip 30 apartments, UAH 2.6 million was allocated from the regional budget and the CF Zaporuka allocated UAH 17.8 million.

Rivne oblast

A message was received about the mining of shopping centers in the city of Rivne, namely Epicenter, Zlata Plaza and Fozzi. Rescuers, policemen and workers of other services were promptly sent to the sites. No suspicious items were found.

Rivne rescuers returned home from Kherson oblast. They dismantled the destroyed and damaged residential and administrative buildings, de-mined the territories and provided humanitarian aid to local residents.

Humanitarian aid, namely grocery sets, vegetables and stoves, was sent to Kherson oblast from the Klesiv community and the Evangelical Christian Churches with the assistance of the Rivne RMA.

Ternopil oblast

The Ternopil RMA joined the online meeting chaired by the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine Iryna Vereshchuk. They discussed systemic approaches to solving the issues of IDPs who come through the Hotlines.

In the premises of the Shumsky City Cultural Center, a heating point Point of Invincibility was opened. In case of hypothermia or when there is no electricity, people can come here where they can live, warm up, cook food, drink tea, charge phones and power banks.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Almost 1K food kits were distributed on the main square of Kherson. This is supported by Khmelnytskyi. From Khmelnytskyi to Kherson oblast, 12 cargo trucks have already been delivered, including 8 heavy-duty trucks, which brought clothes, basic necessities, drinking water and other aids.

Chernivtsi oblast

The Western Regional Command of the State Border Service of Ukraine reported that the family of the fallen hero-border guard from Bukovyna, Oleksandr Kaplienko, was presented with a state award. The wife, son and daughters of the defender of Ukraine received the Order For Courage III degree. 

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The Ministry of Defense of France reported that France sent to Ukraine two batteries of Crotale air defense systems and two missile systems of salvo fire.

Germany has already delivered 2 430 generators to Ukraine.

In the School of the Armed Forces of Lithuania named after Division General Stasis Rashtikis, the international instructor course for the Ukrainian military, which lasted several weeks, has completed.

The State Emergency Service received equipment for the delivery and purification of water from UNICEF. The equipment will help meet the needs of more than 3 million people affected by the war in Ukraine.

Ukraine is testing the possibility of power supply from Slovakia. The company clarified that currently the import of electricity is not of a commercial nature and is carried out to check the possibility of receiving electricity from Slovakia in case of need for the power system.

According to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, for the first time in history, the Minister of Defense of New Zealand arrived in Ukraine. This important mission was carried out by Minister of Defense Pini Henare, who met with Minister of Defense of Ukraine Oleksiy Reznikov.

“Stop this war, withdraw your troops and clear the way for peace negotiations, which cannot be dictated by russia regarding Ukraine,” – Olaf Scholz called on the president of the russian federation.

The New York Times dedicated an article to tennis player Serhii Stakhovsky, who has officially finished his career and is fighting in the National Guard.
