War in Ukraine today: latest news, May 9, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 440th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

During this day, the enemy launched 20 missile and 30 air strikes, conducted over 30 MLRS attacks at the positions of our troops and populated areas. The enemy used 17 air-launched cruise missiles, 15 of which were destroyed by our defenders, and 3 more S-300 missiles on Kramatorsk and Kostiantynivka. Civilian infrastructure was destroyed. 

There is still a high threat of missile and air strikes across Ukraine.

The enemy continues to focus its main efforts on Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Marinka. The enemy carried out almost 30 attacks in the above-mentioned frontline areas over the last day. The fiercest fighting continues for the towns of Bakhmut and Marinka. 

There are no signs of enemy offensive groups being detected towards Volyn and Polissia. Certain units of the armed forces of the russian federation continue to be deployed at training grounds of the republic of belarus.

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the enemy continues to maintain a military presence in the areas bordering Ukraine. They fired mortar and artillery shells at the settlements of Zaliznyi Mist and Muravyi in Chernihiv oblast; Tovstodubove, Bachevsk, Stari Vyrky, Iskryskivka, Volfyno, Yunakivka, Mohrytsia, Popivka and Slavgorod in Sumy oblast, as well as Hoptivka, Varvarivka, Buhrivatka, Ogirtseve, Hatyshche, Pletenivka, Tykhyve, Mala Vovcha, Budarky, Zemlianky, Vilkhuvatka, Dvorichanske and Khatne in Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupyansk, the enemy tried to improve the tactical situation, conducted offensive actions near the settlements of Masiutivka and Stelmakhivka, but was unsuccessful. Kamianka, Kolodiazne, Krasne Pershne, Fiholivka, Dvorichna, Lyman Pershne in Kharkiv oblast and Stelmakhivka in Luhansk oblast came under artillery and mortar fire. 

Towards  Lyman, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensives in the vicinity of Bilohorivka. Makiivka, Bilohorivka, Vesele in Luhansk oblast and Yampolivka and Spirne in Donetsk oblast came under artillery fire.

Towards Bakhmut, the enemy continues to advance. 

There were some unsuccessful offensives in the city of Bakhmut, as well as towards the settlements of Ivanivske and Stupochky. Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Bohdanivka, Chasiv Yar, Zalizne and Nyzhyk in Donetsk oblast suffered from enemy shelling.

The enemy did not conduct any offensive towards Avdiivka. There was an air strike near Avdiivka. Avdiivka, Pervomaiske, Netailovo and Karlivka in Donetsk oblast came under fire.

Towards Marinka, Ukrainian defense forces repelled numerous enemy attacks near Marinka. At the same time, Heorhiivka, Donetsk oblast, also came under enemy fire.

Towards Shakhtarsk, the enemy did not conduct any offensive actions. They shelled the settlements of Novomykhailivka, Vodiane, Vuhledar, Prechystivka and Velyka Novosilka.

The enemy continues to conduct defensive actions towards Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. Meanwhile, Vremivka and Novopil in Donetsk oblast; Olhivske, Malynivka, Huliaipole, Charivne, Mala Tokmachka, Orikhiv, Novodanylivka, Kamianske and Plavni in Zaporizhzhia oblast; Antonivka, Molodizhne and Zelenivka in Kherson oblast were shelled. 

On May 8, the russian occupiers began taking preschool and school-age children with their parents, as well as educators and other public sector employees from the city of Kamianka-Dniprovska in Zaporizhzhia oblast. There were very few volunteers to leave for Berdiansk. At the same time, all medical staff of the local hospital were ordered to go to work.

Aviation of the Defense Forces conducted 4 strikes on buildups of enemy personnel and military equipment, as well as 2 strikes on its anti-aircraft missile systems. Rocket and artillery units struck 2 buildups of russian manpower and an electronic warfare station.


 Mykhailo Fedorov, Deputy Prime Minister of Digital Transformation, informs that in Ukraine, 8 UAV strike companies are ready for combat. All drones are made in Ukraine.

According to Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, an agreement was reached between Ukraine and Russia on mutual visits to civilian detention centers. The first visits have already been made. Ukraine was able to visit 17 defendants together with NGO Nadiia and provided them with pre-agreed sets of essentials.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that towards Kupiansk, russian troops tried to improve the tactical situation and conducted offensive actions near Masiutivka, but were unsuccessful. At least 19 settlements in Kharkiv oblast came under fire.

A road is being repaired near Korotych near Kharkiv. The day before, russian troops destroyed 30 square meters of the pavement with S-300 missiles.

Oleksandr Feldman, owner of the Ecopark in Kharkiv, said that the first animals have been returned to the Valley of Alpacas after the evacuation.

Viktor Kovalenko, Head of the Village Military Administration reported that three windows in one house were smashed by the blast wave as a result of a S-300 missile strike on Tsapivka in Zolochiv community. A crater up to six meters in diameter and about three meters deep was formed at the site of the hit.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration reported that at night on May 8, the enemy launched a massive missile attack on Kharkiv region. S-300 missiles were launched near the village of Novyi Korotych. All the missiles hit the ground. There were no casualties or damage. Another S-300 missile hit near the village of Solonitsevka, Kharkiv region. Transport infrastructure was damaged and a fire broke out in a forest. In Tsapivka village, one of the S-300 missiles damaged a private house.

According to the press service of the State Emergency Service of Kharkiv oblast, rescuers spent more than an hour extinguishing the fire caused by an S-300 missile strike in a forest near Solonitsevka. The fire spread to 300 square meters, coniferous litter was burning.

During the day, the enemy fired artillery and mortars at settlements in Chuhuiv and Kupiansk regions. A private house was damaged in Vovchansk, Chuhuiv region. In the village of Fiholivka, Kupiansk region, 2 private houses were damaged. There were no casualties. 

Mine clearance is underway. Over the past day, pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service examined more than 15 hectares of territory and neutralized 125 ordnance.

Donetsk oblast

According to the Service for Children of Donetsk Regional State Administration, in Donetsk oblast, 23 children have become orphans because of russia’s armed aggression since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. 17 institutions where 772 children lived, including 481 orphans and children deprived of parental care, were evacuated to other regions of the country or abroad.

According to British intelligence, water shortages are becoming a threatening problem for the occupied Donetsk. russian troops cannot control the Siverskyi Donets-Donbas canal and are probably building a water pipeline.

The Mariupol City Council reports that residents of the occupied Mariupol have hung a Ukrainian flag on the building of the Iskra Palace of Culture, which was destroyed by the russian military. 

Serhiy Chaus, head of the Chasiv Yar City Military Administration said that russian military shelled Chasiv Yar in Donetsk region. A man was killed as a result of the shelling.

Serhii Cherevatyi, Spokesman for the Eastern Group of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that Ukrainian troops captured two russian servicemen near Lyman and Kupiansk yesterday, eliminated 55 russian soldiers, wounded 111 and destroyed a T-72, an APC-80, a Rapira anti-tank gun and three drones. Towards Bakhmut, 166 russian servicemen were eliminated, another 206 wounded, and equipment destroyed.

Donetsk RMA reported that on May 9 at 00:50, the russian army shelled Kostiantynivka with S-300 systems and damaged an educational institution. 

There were two explosions in Kramatorsk when russian missiles hit an industrial enterprise. There were no casualties.

Kurakhove community came under fire 5 times. 14 private houses, 7 multi-storey buildings, 2 administrative buildings and an industrial enterprise were damaged in Kurakhove. 650 houses were left without electricity. 

At night, sporadic shelling of Avdiivka was recorded, as well as attacks on Marinka and Maksymilianivka.

2 houses were damaged in Toretsk and 7 more in Soledar community near Horlivka: 4 in Nikiforivka and 3 in Vasiukivka. Chasiv Yar was shelled, houses and non-residential premises damaged.

Towards Lysychansk, a house was destroyed in Zarichne of Lyman community.

The day before, russian troops shelled Predtechyne and Novo Dmytrivka regions three times with artillery, damaging a private house.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, Head of Donetsk Military Administration said that over the past day, russian forces wounded one civilian in Bakhmut, Donetsk oblast.

Luhansk oblast

The russian army focused its offensive actions south of Dibrova, but once again failed. The russians shelled Makiivka and Bilohorivka. During the defense, the enemy repeatedly tried to launch a massive offensive in this area of the front, but all these attempts were stopped either by Ukrainian artillery or counterattacks. The Ukrainian military is ready to counteract the russians’ aggressive plans at any time. 

Life in Lysychansk, Sievierodonetsk and Rubizhne came to a standstill with the capture of these cities. While in Sievierodonetsk the occupation authorities organized at least demonstrative works for propaganda, in the neighboring towns the residents are deprived of this. A significant majority of those people who decided to work in the public sector in Lysychansk have not received money since December. Only in late April did the first repair crews arrive in Rubizhne. The same ones that had recently worked in Sievierodonetsk and gained a reputation as touring burglars. In some high-rise buildings in Sievierodonetsk, they started cutting down the railings on the stairs.

Luhansk RMA reported that  the deserters from among the militants of the so-called ‘luhansk people’s republic’ are being searched near their homes. There are numerous notices on poles and bulletin boards in the cities captured in 2014 that men are wanted. Desertion has become widespread.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Kyiv Regional Military Administration reported that during another russian missile attack, our air defense forces shot down all cruise missiles aimed at the oblast. There were no direct hits recorded. In one of the communities, fragments of a russian missile destroyed by our air forces damaged the roof of a residential building. The police are recording the fragments of shot down missiles. In one of the districts, a russian missile crater measuring 8 meters in diameter and 2.5 meters deep was discovered.

According to Kyiv City Military Administration, about 15 enemy air targets were detected and destroyed in the airspace around Kyiv. A flaming missile fragment landed in a private yard in Holosiivskyi district, Kyiv. There were no casualties or damage.

As a result of russian drone attacks on the night of April 8, Gymnasium No.154 in Kyiv was damaged. The blast wave shattered windows in the building on all three floors, suspended ceilings and plasterwork were damaged too. According to the administration of the gymnasium, repair work is being carried out, but it is expected that the students will resume their full-time studies in a week.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, who arrived in Kyiv to celebrate Europe Day with Ukrainians. Earlier in the day, the President of the European Commission announced that she intends to discuss several key areas of cooperation with Ukrainian leaders, including the delivery of ammunition and the provision of substantial financial assistance for the viability of the state and the restoration of Ukraine.

British Ambassador Melinda Simmons emphasizes that British diplomats will remain in Kyiv despite another nighttime missile attack by russia. She shared her feelings about the attack on her Twitter page.

Medics of the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Kyiv are participating in the combat first aid training based on MARCH protocol tactical within a special NATO program. It involves acquiring basic first aid skills and the ability to apply them in extreme conditions and stressful situations.

The SES reported that EOD units operate on a daily basis in Kyiv oblast, carrying out demining activities of the de-occupied territories, responding to complaints from civilians and raising awareness about mine threat. On May 8 alone, EOD units were deployed 15 times, cleared over 133 hectares of territory and disposed of 17 explosive devices.

A cancellation ceremony for the postage stamp “Glory to the Defense and Security Forces of Ukraine! The Offensive Guard” took place in Kyiv. The new postal stamp features soldiers of special assault units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs – the National Police, the National Guard, and the State Border Guard Service.

The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy reported that two exhibitions have been opened in the center of Kyiv on the occasion of Europe Day. The exhibition “Cultural Mosaic”, located on Sofiivska Square, tells about the EU’s support for Ukrainian culture and art during the war and efforts to preserve it. Booths on Khreshchatyk focus on EU assistance and Ukraine’s path to the EU.

Zhytomyr oblast

11 crews of power engineers from Zhytomyr oblast have completed restoration works in Kherson oblast. Over several months, they have restored power supply to dozens of settlements in the right-bank Kherson oblast that had been without electricity for more than six months. More than 80 power engineers worked to restore electricity to the homes of residents of the liberated South as soon as possible.

In Zhytomyr oblast, 4 mobile teams responding to domestic violence have been created with the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). These teams work in Khoroshiv, Korosten, and Zhytomyr communities. In total, since their inception, they have made a total of approximately 500 visits and provided assistance to more than 1 K residents of the oblast.

Free express courses for learning five foreign languages (English, Polish, French, Czech, and German) have been launched in Zhytomyr. This project was started by the Department of Culture of the Zhytomyr City Council and dedicated to Europe Day. The classes are conducted at the House of Ukrainian Culture and will last for three weeks.

Sumy oblast

The Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that the enemy shelled 6 communities in Sumy oblast, inflicting 70 shells on our territories. Mortars, barrel artillery, AGS, and MLRS were used. 5 houses, 2 private cars and a power line were damaged in Nova Sloboda community. Yunakivka, Znob-Novhorodske, Shalyhine, Esman, and Nova Sloboda communities also came under russian fire.

According to the Sumy Regional Military Administration, at night and in the morning, the enemy continued to attack the settlements of Sumy oblast. There were 25 rounds fired from AGS in Velyka Pysarivka community. The enemy fired two missiles on Romashkove village in Seredyno-Buda community: 3 houses and a grain warehouse were damaged. 23 mortar explosions were reported in Bilopillia region, 13 – in Nova Sloboda community, and 3 more – in Esman. Russian invaders fired 4 shells from self-propelled artillery systems on Yunakivka community. Moreover, the ‘North’ operational command reported about the shelling of Bachivsk in Esman region: 8 shells were fired from a tank cannon.

The police of Sumy oblast reported that a russian drone caused a fire near Lynove village of Nova Sloboda community by igniting dry vegetation. The fire was extinguished before it spread to the houses.

According to the State Bureau of Investigation, two russian soldiers are sentenced in absentia to 11 years in prison for shelling Trostyanets city hospital with a tank. The court convicted Pyotr Smirnov, a tank commander of the 1st tank platoon of the 5th tank company of the 2nd tank battalion of the 1st Guards Tank Chertkovsky Regiment of the 2nd Guards Tamanskaya Motorized Division, of the crime that took place on March 18, 2022, as he was the one who ordered the shelling of the hospital. Private Aynur Mukhametkhanov, a tank gunner-operator, executed the criminal order. There were doctors and patients in the hospital, and at the time of the attack one of the women was giving birth to twins.

On May 8, Trostianets library celebrated the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation by conducting a historical tour and a workshop for children. The librarians gave seventh-graders from Smorodianska school a brief history tour with thematic videos, and then the participants crafted “memory poppies” and tested their knowledge during an interactive quiz.  

According to Hennady Demianenko, Head of Sumy Regional Council, the flag of the European Union was hoisted at the extreme eastern point of Sumy oblast near the russian border. During a visit to the border area of Sumy oblast, he noted that this is the first celebration of Europe Day in Ukraine, and the flag on the border is a symbol that Europe is already here. 

Chernihiv oblast

According to the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, over the past 24 hours, the enemy attacked the border communities of Chernihiv oblast 6 times using barrel artillery, mortars, and self-propelled artillery systems. There were around 60 strikes. As a result of the shelling, residents of 15 settlements in Chernihiv, Koriukivka and Novhorod-Siversky regions lost power supply.

The Chernihiv Regional Military Administration reported that in the morning, the enemy shelled Chernihiv oblast once again – Novhorod-Siversk community was under attack. During a two-hour artillery shelling of Muravyi village, there were 33 explosions recorded. 

Border communities of the oblast received chromebooks and tablets from UNICEF Children’s Fund. 354 pieces of digital equipment were donated. These devices will be used by children of defenders, students from families living in difficult conditions, and families of temporary migrants.

The city of Nizhyn received aid from the Volunteer Hundred from Italy. The Volunteer Hundred from the city of Brescia, which includes emigrants from Nizhyn region, sent humanitarian aid to their former compatriots, including 250 mattresses for multifunctional beds that were sent earlier.

On May 8, Chernihiv and Reims (France) officially became sister cities by signing a perpetual partnership agreement. Reims, internationally known as the capital of champagne, suffered severe destruction during the First World War. Currently, Reims will assist Chernihiv in the areas of water supply and water treatment, tourism development, and support for youth and children.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

On May 8, Ukrainian air defense forces shot down eight missiles used by the occupiers to attack Dnipro oblast. Fragments of one of the missiles fell on a four-storey building in Dnipro. The roof and ceiling of one apartment were damaged. There were no casualties, but a 31-year-old resident of the apartment was injured. Police pyrotechnicians defused the unexploded warhead of the missile.

In the afternoon, the russian military attacked Nikopol region with heavy artillery and drones. Five private houses, 8 outbuildings, garages, a gas pipeline, and power lines were damaged in Myrove and Marhanets communities.

Serhii Krasnyi, song writer and performer, and Pavlo Hrendach, owner of the Sound Works studio and sound engineer of the project said that they wrote a song for the 109th unit of Territorial Defense, as well as the anthem of the Territorial Defense.

A new stamp dedicated to the National Police, the National Guard and the State Border Guard Service has been issued in Dnipro. It is called “Glory to the Defense and Security Forces of Ukraine! Guard of the Offensive “Time to take back what is ours!”.

Kirovohrad oblast

The relocated garment factory ViD has been operating in Svitlovodsk, Kirovohrad oblast, for two months now. Prior to the full-scale invasion, there were five enterprises in Kherson oblast and one in Mykolaiv oblast. When the war broke out, all six enterprises were occupied.

Serhii Zholonko, a fighter from Kropyvnytskyi, received a special award “War in Ukraine, the World against the War in Ukraine” and a gold medal in the Life Press Photo 2023 International Reportage Photography Competition. Photographers from 22 countries took part in the contest.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​17 sappers from Vinnytsia are clearing the land of dangerous russian explosives in Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Kherson oblasts. Hundreds of thousands of square kilometres of Ukraine’s territory are contaminated with mines and shells. The work is carried out daily.

Poltava oblast

In Nyzhni Mlyny of Shcherbani community, craftswomen wove 4 K square meters of camouflage nets. About fifty craftswomen are engaged in the process.

Cherkasy oblast

In the morning, the russian forces attacked Cherkasy oblast with two cruise missiles. There were no casualties. The remains of a Kh-101 missile were found in a forest near the village of Orshanets. The explosion caused a fire, which was extinguished. There were no casualties. The blast wave damaged 47 windows of the tuberculosis dispensary building. The staff evacuated 47 patients to the undamaged part of the building.

For the sixth time since the full-scale invasion, American doctors have come to Cherkasy. They provided free consultations to 80 people affected by the war.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to Zaporizhzhya RMA,  russian troops conducted an air strike on the town of Orikhiv in Zaporizhzhia oblast. As a result of the shelling, 10 private houses were destroyed and 20 more civilian homes damaged. Preliminary, there were no casualties.

On May 8, the russian military conducted almost 70 attacks on residential and civilian infrastructure in Zaporizhzhia, Vasylivka and Polohy regions of Zaporizhzhia oblast from UAVs, MLRS and artillery. 

There were 38 reports of the destruction of residential buildings, cars and other private property, social institutions, and utility networks. A 15-year-old resident of Matviivka community was wounded. 

Mykolaiv oblast

The South Operational Command reported that in Mykolaiv oblast, air defense shot down a russian Orlan-10 reconnaissance UAV.

Mykolaiv RMA reported that yesterday, the enemy shelled the waters of Ochakiv community with artillery. There were no casualties.

Over the past day, there were two explosions of agricultural machinery in Mykolaiv oblast. One man was not injured, only his vehicle damaged, and the other sustained a mine-blast injury and was hospitalized.

Modular houses are being installed in Novohryhorivka village in Mykolaiv oblast. A total of 15 structures have been delivered to the community.

Odesa oblast

The ‘South’ Operational Command reported that on May 8, 15 enemy ships, including four missile carriers with the total volley of up to 32 Kalibr missiles were on combat duty in the Black Sea.

The flag of the European Union flew on the flagpole near Odesa Regional State Administration alongside the blue and yellow flag. The Europe Day celebrations continued on Dumska Square near the City Council.

Berezivka community in Odesa oblast handed over two drones to the defenders of the 35th Separate Marine Brigade named after Rear Admiral Mykhailo Ostrohradskyi, who are stationed in Donetsk oblast. The wife of the deceased defender contributed UAH 85 K to buy quadcopters for the Armed Forces.

Another batch of cars, basic necessities and traditional delicacies was delivered to the front line thanks to the efforts of the Urbanskyi Charitable Foundation Prydunavie, members of Odesa Regional Council and volunteers.

Kherson oblast

russian artillery continues to attack Kizomys of Bilozirka community. As a result of another shelling, a paramedic station was destroyed in the village. There were no casualties.

On May 8, the russian army fired 46 times at civilian settlements in Kherson oblast. They fired 320 shells from artillery, multiple rocket launchers, mortars, tanks, drones and aircraft. The enemy attacked Kherson once, firing two shells at the city. 

Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that russian troops hit residential areas of the region’s settlements, as well as the buildings of a school, an outpatient clinic, a nursing home for the elderly and the village council building. 14 people were injured, including a 9-year-old child. 

The ‘South’ Operational Command reported that in Kherson oblast, the Defense Forces struck at a buildup of russian manpower. Rocket units and artillery destroyed 18 russian military vehicles, three strike and tactical drones, a large-caliber cannon and seven armored vehicles.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Members of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Ukraine’s EU Integration visited Volyn. They discussed improving the capacity of existing checkpoints and building new ones, implementation of the Integrated Border Management Strategy, and cross-border cooperation programs.

Zakarpattia oblast

A new stage of the Interreg NEXT cross-border program “Romania-Ukraine” has been launched. The budget for project implementation is EUR 54 million.

Uzhhorod City Council discussed the concept of a memorial to fallen Heroes of Ukraine at the Calvary cemetery. Officials of the city council emphasized that they will work on the memorial project until they reach an agreement with all the wishes of the families of the fallen Heroes taken into account.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

From March 24 of this year, pyrotechnicians and equipment from Ivano-Frankivsk were sent to inspect the liberated areas of Mykolaiv oblast. Since the beginning of the month, 7 hectares have been inspected and  24 ordinance neutralized.

Lviv oblast

The RMA reported that for half a year, Lviv oblast sent 16 K units of confiscated goods to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the bodies that ensure the functioning of the state in conditions of war, including 20 cars, 300 units of clothing, 500 electronic devices, equipment, tools and accessories, 12 K other goods, in particular, furniture and lumber.

The city council of Lviv held a meeting with Philip Zorichich, Mayor of Pula-Pola, that became a sister city of Lviv.

Andrii Sadovyi, Mayor of Lviv, announced that Lviv opened an office in Brussels.

The RMA reported that 55 drones (45 Mavic 3 quadcopters (in various configurations); 3 Mavic 3T quadcopters; 7 – Matrice 30) were sent to the front line thanks to the Birds of Victory charity project.

Three cars were sent from the oblast to the soldiers at the front. One car was sent from volunteers of Strii region, and two from Drohobych Regional Military Administration and the KOLO CF.

Medical institutions of Horodotsk community received equipment for two dental offices, hospital furniture, medicines, Covid-tests, medical consumables, etc.from French benefactors.

A charity concert, Let’s Sing and Dance to the Rhythm of the Heart, aimed to raise funds for fuel for the Chervonohrad 63rd Separate Battalion of the Territorial Defense Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was held in the People’s House of Chervonohrad .

The flag of the EU was raised in the center of Lviv. Musical accompaniment was provided by the Lviv Fanfare brass band, which recently returned from one of the largest festivals in Europe.

Rivne oblast

An institute training veterans’ assistants will be created in the oblast. Such assistants will help veterans to speed up and improve communication with state and non-state structures, obtain certificates, undergo advanced training, get a job, etc.

Ternopil oblast

The RMA representatives took part in an online meeting with the Ministry of Veterans Affairs. They discussed adaptation of discharged servicemen to civilian life.

Ternopil Regional Hospital received humanitarian aid, namely, medicine and equipment worth over SEK 20 million from the Sweden-Ukraine Foundation. Aid from the fund also includes equipment sent to a newly established field hospital in Kharkiv oblast. For reasons of confidentiality, the name of the field hospital has not been released.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The RMA reported that last week, 650 kg of clothes were issued to 326 IDPs at the clothing distribution point at Khmelnytskyi RMA.

The flags of the member states of the EU were hung in Khmelnytskyi. The action is symbolic and shows that Ukrainians remember and appreciate the support of European states in the fight against the russian occupier.

Chernivtsi oblast

Residents of Sokyrian community sent humanitarian aid, a Nissan Pathfinder all-terrain vehicle, a night vision device and a quadcopter, to the hunting brigade, which defends Ukrainian land in Bakhmut.

The US allocated a new package of military aid to Ukraine in the amount of $1.2 billion, includes: additional air defense systems and ammunition; equipment for the integration of Western launchers, missiles and radars with the air defense systems of Ukraine; ammunition for combating unmanned aerial systems; 155 mm caliber artillery shells; commercial satellite image services; supporting training, maintenance and support activities.

Mi-8 helicopters from Croatia arrived in Ukraine, which it had previously promised.  

Mariusz Blaszczak, Minister of Defense of Poland, reported that the country sent to Ukraine 10 MiG-29 fighters, which it had previously promised to provide as part of military aid.

The European Parliament extended duty-free trade with Ukraine for another year.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.

Denys Shmyhal, Prime Minister of Ukraine, discussed with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission the issue of exporting Ukrainian agricultural products to the EU.

Matthew Miller, spokesman of the US State Department, announced that Anthony Blinken, US Secretary of State, held a phone conversation with Eli Cohen, Israel’s Foreign Minister, during which the issue of russian aggression against Ukraine was raised.

Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of the Netherlands, announced that the government is considering the possibility of transferring F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.

Eric Mamer, Press Secretary of the European Commission, stated that the new package of sanctions against russia will be aimed at blocking ways of circumventing them.

Fumio Kishidu, Japanese Prime Minister, who will chair the G7 summit, stated that support of Ukraine in the list of priorities of the upcoming G7 summit.

“The European Union will help Ukraine as much as needed… Our commitment to a free and democratic Ukraine has never been stronger,” said Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.

The Estonian International Development Center (ESTDEV) with the support of the Estonian government is launching the Capacity Building on the EU Integration training program for Ukrainian civil servants.

The Berlin court banned russian flags, ussr flags and george’s ribbons on May 9.

In Warsaw, Polish and Ukrainian activists set up a large installation near the mausoleum of soviet soldiers to remind of the crimes of the russian federation. Hundreds of Ukrainian flags, some covered in red paint, wooden crosses with names of fallen Ukrainians and Poles, models of residential buildings with inscriptions on them – Bucha, Mariupol, Bakhmut, Kherson, Irpin – were installed near the monument to soviet soldiers.
