War in Ukraine today: latest news, May 7, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 438th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

During this day, the enemy launched 8 missile strikes, including 2 S-300 missiles on a civilian enterprise in Balakliia in Kharkiv oblast, wounding 5 civilians. In addition, the occupiers fired 5 Kh-22 missiles at civilian targets in Mykolaiv oblast and one Kh-22 missile at Kherson oblast, without causing any losses. The enemy also conducted 22 air strikes and fired more than 10 times from multiple rocket launchers at the positions of our troops and Nikopol in Dnipropetrovska oblast. Unfortunately, there were civilians killed and wounded, and a multi-storey building, private homes and other civilian infrastructure were damaged.

There is still a high threat of launching missile and air strikes across Ukraine.

The enemy continues to focus its main efforts on Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Marinka. Heavy fighting is taking place in the towns of Bakhmut and Marinka. In total, the enemy carried out 39 attacks during the day.

There were no significant changes towards Volyn and Polissia.

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the enemy launched air strikes near the settlements of Zarichchia, Leonivka and Kostobobriv in Chernihiv oblast. There were mortar and artillery attacks against Zarichchia, Orlykivka, Bleshnia, Zaliznyi Mist, Arkhypivka, Leonivka, Buchky in Chernihiv oblast; Seredyno-Buda, Vorozhba and Iskryskivshchyna in Sumy oblast, and Udy, Vovchansk, Pletenivka, Bochkove, Mala Vovcha, Nesterne and Stroivka in Kharkiv oblast.

The enemy did not conduct any offensive towards Kupiansk. There was an air strike in the area of Hrianykivka. Fiholivka, Novomlynsk, Lyman Pershyi, Berestove in Kharkiv oblast as well as Novoselivske, Stelmakhivka, Luhansk oblast came under enemy artillery and mortar fire. 

Towards Lyman, the enemy did not conduct any offensive actions. There were air strikes near the settlements of Bilohorivka in Luhansk oblast and Spirne in Donetsk oblast. Makiivka and Nevske in Luhansk oblast and Bilohorivka and Spirne in Donetsk oblast came under artillery fire.

The enemy continues to conduct offensive actions towards Bakhmut. 

Fighting continues in the town of Bakhmut, the enemy is shelling the town with incendiary and phosphorus ammunition. Throughout the day, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensives towards Khromove, Ivanivske, Chasovyi Yar and Stupochky. He carried out air strikes on Bakhmut, Bohdanivka, Kurdyumivka and Niu York. Zaliznianske, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Novomarkove, Markove, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Chasiv Yar, Stupochki, Oleksandr-Shultine and Leonidivka in Donetsk oblast were shelled.

Towards Avdiivka sector, the enemy conducted offensive actions in the areas of Avdiivka and Pervomayske, but did not succeed.  He fired at Berdychi, Avdiivka, Vodiane, Pervomaiske, Nevelske, Netailove, Karlivka and Hostre in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Mariinka, the enemy continues to attack the positions of the defense forces. Fighting for Marinka continues. At the same time, Heorhiivka, Krasnohorivka, Marinka and Pobieda in Donetsk oblast came under enemy fire.

Towards Shakhtarsk, the enemy did not conduct any offensive actions. Novomykhailivka, Yelizavetivka, Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva, Novoukrainka, Shakhtarsk and Velyka Novosilka in Donetsk oblast were shelled.

Towards Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, the enemy continues to conduct defensive actions. There were air strikes targeting Vremivka, Donetsk oblast, and Novodanylivka, Zaporizhzhya oblast. Meanwhile, they shelled more than 45 localities, including Zaliznychne, Huliaipilske, Bilohiria, Mala Tokmachka, and Kamianske in Zaporizhzhia oblast; Zolota Balka, Vesele, Antonivka, Zelenivka, Kizomys in Kherson oblast and the city of Kherson.

Russian occupants continue to take out looted property from the frontline settlements of the temporarily occupied territories of Zaporizhzhia oblast under the pretext of evacuating civilians. For example, in Mykhailivka, all property was evacuated along with employees of enemy financial institutions in cars stolen from local residents. In addition, 15 buses arrived in Dniprorudne to evacuate representatives of the russian occupation administration and the so-called ‘people’s police’ with their families. Russian occupation troops are massively looting shops with office equipment and stealing cars.

Over the past day, the aviation of the Defense Forces conducted 6 strikes on buildups of enemy personnel and military equipment, as well as a strike on an enemy anti-aircraft missile system. 

Rocket and artillery units hit 2 control points, 2 buildups of enemy weapons and military equipment, as well as 3 enemy ammunition depots.


The Prosecutor General’s Office informs that 480 children have been killed as a result of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In total, 1444 children have suffered from russia’s armed aggression.

The press service of the Ministry of Reintegration reports that 80 bodies of fallen Ukrainian defenders have been returned in accordance with the Geneva Conventions.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the enemy launched an airstrike near Hrianykivka. Also, 11 settlements in Kharkiv oblast came under mortar and artillery fire. 

According to Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, the enemy launched a missile attack on the town of Balakliia, Izium region. Preliminary, an S-300 missile hit the territory of one of the car parks. According to preliminary information, five civilians were injured. Two women aged 75 and one woman aged 50 sustained explosive injuries. Two men – aged 20 and 85 – have relatively light injuries. Currently, doctors are providing all necessary assistance to the victims.

Referring to Viktor Zabashta, Director of the Emergency Medical Aid Centre, a 67-year-old woman sustained shrapnel wounds as a result of shelling in Buhaiivka, Chuhuiv region.

The enemy fired at frontline settlements in Kharkiv, Chuhuiv and Kupiansk regions. The shelling of Vovchansk, Chuhuiv region, damaged a shop building, a monument to the DOSAAF Aviation Centre and several private houses. A private house was damaged by artillery shelling in Dvorichna, Kupiansk region. 

There were no casualties in the shelling over the day.

Mine danger remains high in the oblast. After 14:30, a tractor exploded on an unknown explosive object in a field near the village of Zatyshshia, Kharkiv oblast. A 43-year-old man was injured and hospitalized in moderate condition.

Mine clearance is underway. Over the past day, pyrotechnic units of the State Emergency Service examined 10 hectares of territory and defused 125 ordnance.

Donetsk oblast

Roman Hryshchenko, Commander of the Kharkiv 127th TrO Brigade, states that the occupying country does not stop shelling Bakhmut with various types of weapons, including phosphorus incendiary munitions, which are prohibited by all international conventions. Artillery shelling of the city has intensified in recent days, and the number of Wagnerites has increased. 

According to Yurii Fedorenko, Commander of the 92nd Brigade’s attack drone company, the russian federation has no tactical success. The defense forces are taking measures to detect the firepower of the russian military, from which they are shelling Bakhmut with prohibited ammunition.

The Commander of the Ukrainian Land Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, visited Bakhmut to present awards to soldiers and talk to commanders. He stated that the russian army has intensified shelling, and is increasingly using more advanced equipment and regrouping troops.

Vitalii Barabash, Head of Avdiivka RMA, in the morning, russian troops shelled Avdiivka with Grad rocket launchers, tanks and cannon artillery. He added that the body of a man killed by shelling on 5 May was found.

In the middle of the night, russians attacked Druzhkivka with drones, damaging three private houses, without causing any casualties.

Towards Volnovakha, a man was wounded in Maksymivka of Vuhledar community. The outskirts of Komar came under fire seven times.

Towards Donetsk, the enemy shelled Kurakhivka community twice with artillery. The shells landed in the private sector, without causing casualties.

Towards Horlivka, Chasiv Yar came under fire 4 times 8 houses were damaged. In Toretsk community, 8 houses were damaged and 2 people wounded: in Niu York and Pivnichne.

Towards Lysychansk, an infrastructure facility in Siversk and 4 houses in Yampol of Lyman community were damaged.

According to Pavlo Kyrylenko, Head of the Donetsk Military Administration, over the past day, 5 residents of Donetsk oblast were wounded: in Niu York, Pivnichne, Avdiivka, Krasnohorivka and Maksymivka. 

In the temporarily occupied Mariupol, russians have significantly accelerated the looting of surviving apartments, even those with people living in them. Apartments are being ‘freed’ from Mariupol residents through denunciations or document checks.

Referring to Serhii Chaus, Head of the city military administration, in Chasiv Yar, Donetsk oblast, russian occupation forces destroyed the bridge leading to the Skhidnyi microregion. It is no longer possible to get there. He added that people had been warned in advance about the possible destruction of the bridge, as the authorities did not rule out its destruction.

Luhansk oblast

On May 6, russians fired at Stelmakhivka, Makiivka, Nevske and Bilohorivka. Once again, the enemy tried to find weaknesses in our defense near Bilohorivka. The enemy is not reducing the use of artillery, assault and army aircraft. However, the Ukrainian military has been preventing the russians from breaking through in this area for many months. Moreover, they regularly destroy the enemy’s equipment and field depots, as they did recently.

To provide medical care to their wounded, the occupiers continue to use the infrastructure of the occupied settlements. For example, in one of the villages of Starobilsk region, the invaders set up a field hospital, where up to 70 russian servicemen are currently being treated.

Roman Vlasenko, Head of the Sievierodonetsk RMA, says that in the occupied part of Luhansk oblast, the pseudo-authorities are preparing for evacuation, as they fear a breakthrough by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Despite this, he added, the occupiers continue to prepare for the events on 9 May.

The RMA said that in Luhansk, it has been ordered to speed up the forced passport registration, especially for the elderly.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Last night, an enemy reconnaissance UAV was spotted in Kyiv airspace. The Kyiv City Military Administration reported that the drone was destroyed by air defense forces.

A modern rehabilitation center for wounded defenders is being created in Kyiv – this is a priority area in the capital’s medical sector. Kyiv City State Administration reported that the Center is planned to be created on the basis of one of Kyiv’s medical institutions, which already works with wounded soldiers. To ensure its efficiency, foreign partners are involved in this project.

In Peremoha village, Brovary region, a resident found an explosive item in her household while working on her garden plot. EOD specialists determined it was a shot from an RPG-7 hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher. The police of Kyiv oblast reported that workers of Makariv cemetery found a shell while digging a grave.

Since 2014, more than 384 K internally displaced persons have registered in the capital, of whom about 66 K are children. These are more than 307 K families, more than 64 K pensioners and almost 14,000 people with disabilities. According to the Kyiv City State Administration, since the beginning of the full-scale russian invasion, nearly 250 K internally displaced persons have registered in Kyiv, including more than 45 K children.

The Help Hostomel charity fund reported that as of today, the modular town in Hostomel is almost 85% full. They noted that modular houses for people who lost their homes due to the war were provided by Poland. The town consists of two sections and is designed for 176 people.

The city council reported that a special commission is working in Kyiv oblast to examine all monuments, memorials and obelisks in Bila Tserkva community. Some of them will be dismantled or moved to a museum to get rid of the russian imperial past, while others will be reconstructed and the surrounding area landscaped.

Oleksandr Tkachenko, the Minister of Culture, reported that in Kyiv, the soviet coat of arms on the monument to the Motherland will be dismantled and replaced with a trident. According to him, design documentation is currently being developed. 85% of the voters in the Diia app voted in favor of replacing the coat of arms with a trident.

Zhytomyr oblast

Estonia is the main partner of Zhytomyr oblast in renewing the fleet of specialized and passenger vehicles that were destroyed by russian troops or used by our defense forces. During the year, about 80 units of equipment were received from the Estonian government. These are emergency medical vehicles, special vehicles for firefighters and foresters, and buses for educational institutions, social institutions and communities in the oblast.

Estonia helps rebuild infrastructure destroyed by russians in Zhytomyr oblast. The first stage of kindergarten modules delivered from the partner country in Ovruch has been installed. At the moment, the connection to the grid and finishing works are being carried out, which are planned to be completed by the International Children’s Day on June 1.

The city council reported that an online public discussion of new names of five streets and 16 alleys in Zhytomyr, which are proposed to be renamed, has started. The streets to be renamed include Bahrationivska, Denys Davydov, Radishcheva, Ruska Slobidka, and Beloruska.

Dmytro Mamonov, an IDP from Sloviansk, has designed a portable device to evacuate the wounded, facilitate the work of combat medics on the battlefield and make it easier to provide first aid to soldiers. According to him, the idea to create a medical evacuation chassis came about after Dmytro saw Estonian ground drones working on TV to rescue the wounded. The author plans to give his project to the military for testing, after which, if necessary, he will improve it.

Sumy oblast

Over the past 24 hours, on May 6, the russians opened fire 11 times at the border areas. In total, there were 84 explosions recorded. The settlements of Velyka Pysarivka, Znob-Novhorodske, Esman, Nova Sloboda, Bilopillia, and Miropillia were under enemy fire. As a result of one of the mortar attacks, a private house in Bilopillia community caught fire.

According to Sumy Regional Military Administration, in the morning, the russian military launched a mortar attack on the territory of Nova Sloboda community. Two explosions were recorded.

During excavation works near Vilna Sloboda village in Hlukhiv region, a tractor ran over a mine. According to the regional police, the tractor caught fire as a result of the explosion, and the driver and agronomist of the company were injured.

Emergency repair work has been completed in Hlukhiv after russian airstrikes conducted on April 5. As a result of the attack, 36 private homes, an educational institution, and a power line were damaged. 62 rescuers and 6 pieces of equipment of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine were working at the scene.

The regional State Emergency Service reported that over the past 24 hours, 40 ordnance previously found in Sumy and Okhtyrka regions were disposed of in Sumy oblast.

Residents of Sumy oblast provided accommodation for 6,189 internally displaced persons under the Shelter program. According to the regional Department of Social Protection, over the past year, 2,800 families in Sumy oblast who provided housing for IDPs received almost UAH 23 million in compensation for housing and utility services.

Chernihiv oblast

On May 6 and 7, the russian military conducted at least 14 attacks in Chernihiv oblast using various types of weapons. There were 9 explosions from enemy air strikes, 66 explosions from 120-mm mortar bombs, 24 explosions from artillery shells. The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that the border settlements of Hirsk, Leonivka, Krasny Khutir, Zaliznyi Mist, Tymonovychi, Khrinivka, Karpovychi, Buchky, and Arkhypivka came under enemy fire.

In the morning, russian troops shelled the border areas of Chernihiv oblast 4 times. According to the ‘North’ Operational Command, in total, there were 19 mortar bombs fired in the area of Zaliznyi Mist, Arkhipivka, Leonivka, and Buchky.

On the night of May 6, servicemen of the 119th separate brigade of the territorial defense forces eliminated an enemy Shahed UAV on the border of Chernihiv oblast. According to the soldiers of the brigade, the Shahed lost control after being targeted, and was found by a search team in the morning.

Nizhyn has become the first partner city for the State College (Pennsylvania, USA). According to the city council, cooperation between the city and the State College has been effective, as this winter, residents of a large area of the city have been provided with heating and hot water thanks to the help of the partners.

200 copies of books were given to the Korolenko Regional Universal Library. The books by French and French-speaking authors were donated to the library as part of a project by the Cultural Department of the French Embassy in Ukraine to promote the French language. According to the library’s director, Inna Aliferenko, the library, which was damaged by russian shelling on March 30 last year, is replenishing its reserves largely due to donated books.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

At night, the russian army shelled Nikopol in Dnipropetrovsk oblast. One person was killed, two injured. The buildings of a college, a three-storey building, seven private houses, three outbuildings, a fence, five cars, and 14 solar panels were damaged. russian troops also struck Myrove community in Nikopol region. Two houses, an outbuilding, and a car were damaged there.

Air defense forces destroyed a russian Shahed  drone over Sinelnykove region, Dnipropetrovsk oblast on the night of 7 May. 

A 16-year-old girl who was in serious condition as a result of hostile shelling died in a Dnipro hospital. Yelyzaveta Nevara was injured with severe burns in the shelling of Malotaranivka village, Kramatorsk oblast, on 29 April. She was taken to Dnipro. On 4 May, Liza’s heart stopped. The girl’s mother is in grave condition in hospital.

Vinnytsia oblast

Hnivan community received a message about the death of the defender of Ukraine Oleksandr Hanchuk, who had been missing for 5 months. He was killed during a heavy artillery shelling on 5 December 2022 while performing heavy combat missions.

Kirovohrad oblast

In Kropyvnytskyi, the Central Ukrainian Technical University is preparing a “Book of Remembrance” about students and graduates who were killed in the ATO/JFO zone in 2014-2022 and during the russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022-2023. The university administration asks residents of Kropyvnytskyi, Kirovohrad oblast, and other oblasts of Ukraine to contribute to the book and tell stories about those who were killed at the front.

Poltava oblast

A grenade launcher training was held for civilians in Hadiach. The residents learned about various types of grenade launchers currently in service of the AFU, including the specifics of different grenade launchers, algorithms for firing grenade launchers, firing positions, safety precautions for handling grenade launchers, and the specifics of using ammunition for different types of enemy vehicles.

Cherkasy oblast

There are five people from Cherkasy among the 45 defenders of Mariupol released from russian captivity. These are Senior Lieutenant Artem Seredniak, Sergeant Major Serhii Kravets, and soldiers Vadym Kytar, Ivan Pochynok, and Anton Shtukin.

The Day of Support and Beauty for the wives of fallen defenders of the 118th Territorial Defence Brigade was held at a beauty salon in Cherkasy. The masters arranged self-care workshops to support women who have lost their relatives.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration reported that 16 frontline settlements were attacked 75 times over the last day. The enemy fired at Zaliznychne, Kamianske, Shcherbaky, Malynivka and Bilohirya from multiple rocket launchers and artillery. Private houses, cars and property were damaged. There were no casualties. 

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the russian army continues to be on the defensive. Yesterday, they fired at the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and settlements near the areas of hostilities. Olhivske, Malynivka, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Huliaipolske, Charivne, Bilohiria, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka, Mali Shcherbaki and Kamianske were shelled. 

Ivan Fedorov, Mayor of Melitopol  reported that a huge traffic jam has formed at the Chonhar entry-exit control point due to the so-called “evacuation” from Melitopol announced by the russian occupiers. Trucks with loot are in a separate line. Thousands of cars have to wait at least 5 hours. 

Mykolaiv oblast

Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration reported that on the night of May 7, from 00:18 to 00:37, russian troops struck Mykolaiv oblast with five Kh-22 missiles. Olshanskе and Kostiantynivka communities were hit. The russians hit a sausage shop of one of the enterprises and destroyed it. No casualties are reported. One rocket landed in a field. There was a hit near the bridge, but it was destroyed a year ago. Air defense forces eliminated three Iranian Shahed drones.

A memorial in honor of the artillerymen of the 38th division of the 63rd separate mechanized brigade was erected in Pervomaiske. The soldiers were killed liberating Pervomaiske community from the russian army.

As of early May, more than 86% of all land in Mykolaiv region was plowed, but another 288,000 hectares need to be cleared of mines for sowing.

Odesa oblast

Since May 6, the number of surface-based missile launchers in the Black Sea has increased to four. Their total volley of Kalibr missiles is up to 32. The level of threat from the sea is significant.

23-year-old Bohdan Mykhalaki became famous in Izmail for his virtuoso violin playing in crowded places. Many Izmail residents enjoyed the talented young man. Bohdan has been helping the Ukrainian Armed Forces since the beginning of the russian invasion. Together with his girlfriend, he made and sent trench candles to the front. In January 2023 he decided to volunteer for the front and defend his country. At the end of April, near Bakhmut, during massive enemy artillery shelling, Bohdan received severe shrapnel wounds to his neck and chest, which proved fatal.

The City Sports Palace of Izmail hosted a charity rhythmic gymnastics festival called  Dream of Victory in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The sporting event began with a minute of silence to honor the civic commitment, strength of spirit, resilience and heroic deeds of the defenders of Ukraine and all those who fell as a result of russian armed aggression against the Ukrainian people. The programs performed by the young women, ranging from the junior division to the Sportmaster candidates, were dedicated to the dream of victory and the exaltation of patriotism.

Kherson oblast

On May 6, there were 51 enemy attacks on civilian settlements in Kherson oblast. They fired 237 shells from artillery, MLRS, mortars, tanks, drones and aircraft, and launched a missile strike. The enemy attacked Kherson 4 times, firing 11 shells at the city. Russian troops hit residential areas, killing six people and  injuring four.

A video of uncontrolled water discharge through the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station damaged by the russian occupiers has appeared on social media. The water level in the reservoir is now high, threatening to flood Kherson floodplains and further destroy the power plant, in particular, its underwater part. 

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson Regional Military Administration, met with Caroline Lindholm Billing, representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Jens de Mol, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Netherlands to Ukraine, Tobias Thyberg, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sweden to Ukraine, and Oleksandra Vatsko, Deputy Head of Mission of the Norwegian Embassy. Philanthropists are actively helping to restore the Kherson region.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

In Lutsk, the Ride for Life charity bike ride, initiated by cyclists of Ukraine, took place. Funds collected from the bike ride will be donated to buy tactical first aid kits for the military.

Zakarpattia oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine noted the initiative of Zakarpattia RMA to digitize services and collect all the necessary information for defenders and their families on the Help Zakarpattia portal.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, awarded the highest title of Hero of Ukraine and the Golden Star to Colonel Serhii Sirchenko, Commander of the 56th Separate Mechanized Brigade. The serviceman is from Zakarpattia oblast. He spent most of his military service in Zakarpattia as part of the 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade.

Almost 600 11th-graders from Tiachiv region took part in fire training. Students consolidated the theory in practice, performing practical shootings with standard weapons. They also learned to provide pre-medical and tactical assistance. Such exercises are conducted throughout the oblast as part of preparing the population for national resistance.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

As part of yesterday’s exchange of prisoners, one Carpathian soldier, Sergeant Andrii Plytus, returned home. The serviceman went missing in Mariupol. He served in the Azov separate special purpose unit. Since the war began, 31 military personnel from Prykarpattia have returned home.

The RMA reported that the 10th separate mountain assault brigade Edelveis received a For Courage and Bravery honorary award from the President of Ukraine.

Lviv oblast

Among the 45 defenders who returned from captivity yesterday, there are two residents of Lviv oblast. Sviatoslav Siryi, Head of the Lviv Azov, and Vasyl Savytskyi, officer of the Azov regiment from Strii region, returned home.

Over 237K people were registered as IDPs in Lviv oblast in the Unified Information Database. Over 68K of them are children. The actual number of IDPs living in the oblast is higher, as many people settled in the private sector and were not registered as IDPs.

The RMA reported that a meeting with representatives of the Utah State Senate was held in Lviv oblast to develop trade and economic relations with business.

The Lviv City Council held a meeting with Alfonso Herrera, UN Goodwill Ambassador for Refugees and one of the most famous actors in Latin America. They discussed support for the UNBROKEN National Rehabilitation Center.
