It has been the 433rd day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The russian army launched 3 missile strikes, 30 air strikes and carried out about 8 MLRS attacks on the positions of Ukrainian troops and populated areas. There are wounded among the civilian population, destroyed and damaged private houses and other civilian infrastructure.

Ukraine is still under the threat of missile and air strikes. 

The russian army continues to focus on conducting offensive actions towards Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Mariinka. Units of the defense forces of Ukraine repelled over 20 russian attacks on the specified areas of the front. The fiercest battles are raging for Bakhmut and Mariinka. Ukrainian soldiers are steadfastly defending.

Towards Volyn and Polissya, no signs of the formation of russian offensive groups were detected. Certain units of the armed forces of the russian federation continue to be located on the territory of the republic of belarus.

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the russian army maintains a military presence in the Bryansk, Kursk and Belgorod regions bordering Ukraine. They carried out artillery and mortar shelling of the settlements of Hasychivka, Yeline, Bleshnia, Karpovychi, Tymonovichi, Leonivka, Muravya, Chernihiv oblast; Znob-Novhorodsk, Uralov, Seredyna-Buda, Kucherivka, Rivne, Vorozhba, Volfine, Mykolaivka, Myropillia, Sumy oblast, as well as Veterinarne, Vilkhivka, Gatyshche, Vovchansk, Potykhonov, Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, russian military did not conduct offensive operations. Krasne Pershe, Fiholivka, Novomlynsk, Lyman Pershyi, Kupiansk, Kislivka, Krokhmalne, Berestov of the Kharkiv oblast were struck with russian artillery and mortar attacks.

Towards Lyman, the russian army conducted unsuccessful offensive actions on the south direction of Dibrova. Makiivka, Luhansk oblast, Bilohorivka, Verkhniokamianske, Spirne, Donetsk oblast were hit by artillery fire.

Towards Bakhmut, the russian army continues to conduct offensive actions. Heavy fighting continues for the city of Bakhmut. In addition, the Russian army conducted unsuccessful offensive actions near the settlements of Ivanovske and Predtechine. Vasiukivka, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Novomarkove, Hryhorivka, Khromove, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Chasiv Yar, Kostyantynivka, Predtechine, Diliivka and Pivdenne, Donetsk oblast were shelled.

Towards Avdiivka, russian soldiers  carried out unsuccessful offensive actions in the vicinities of Pervomaisky. They shelled the settlements of Novokalynove, Avdiivka, Severne, Tonenke, Karlivka, Netaylove, and Pervomaiske, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Marinka, Ukrainian troops repelled numerous russian attacks in the Marinks area. Krasnohorivka, Heorgiivka, Mariinka, Pobieda and Novomykhailivka of the Donetsk oblast were hit by the enemy.

Towards Shakhtarsk, russian military did not conduct offensive operations. Russian troops shelled the settlements of Novoukrainka and Prechistivka, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Zaporizhzhia and Kherson directions, the russian army continues to conduct defensive operations. At the same time, they shelled more than 30 settlements bordering the frontline. Among them are Vremivka, Novosilka, Donetsk oblast; Huliaipole, Bilohiria, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanilivka, Novoandriivka and Kamianske, Zaporizhzhia oblast; Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast; Zolota Balka, Dudchany, Kachkarivka, Vesele, Lviv, Ivanivka, Mykilske, Antonivka, Dniprovske, Kizomys, Kherson oblast and the city of Kherson.

There are still cases of violent abduction of pro-Ukrainian civilian population, as well as the construction of new torture camps for their detention. Russian terrorists set up one of these torture chambers in the police department of the temporarily captured Chaplynka, Kherson oblast. Up to ten civilians, including minors, are being illegally detained there at the moment. Russian troops keep people in harsh, inhumane conditions and torture them. There are cases when kidnapped people were tortured to death by russian terrorists.

Aviation of the Defense Forces per day launched 5 strikes on areas of concentration of russian personnel. Ukrainian troops also shot down three russian UAVs of different types.

Missile and artillery units hit one command post, twelve manpower concentration areas, four ammunition depots, one anti-aircraft defense and one more key russian target.

The Verkhovna rada reported that martial law and general mobilization have been extended for 90 days. The period of martial law is extended from 05:30 on May 20, 2023. 

The Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko announced that eight brigades of the “Offensive Guard” are already fully formed. Klymenko also added that there are plans to form additional brigades, because there are those willing to join. 

At the legislative level, the political regime of russia was recognized as “racism”. This is stated on the website of the Verkhovna Rada. The resolution was adopted as a statement. It is addressed to the United Nations, the European Parliament, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, governments and parliaments of foreign countries with a call to support the condemnation of the ideology, politics and practice of racism.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the enemy army shelled at least 13 settlements.

Viktor Kovalenko, head of the Zolochiv Military Administration reported that at around 6:30 am, Russia launched Grad missiles at Huriv Kozachok. According to him, the shelling hit the territory of the agricultural enterprise, damaging the warehouses.

Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration informed that this morning, russian invaders shelled the border settlements again. Petropavlivka village, Kupiansk region, was under enemy attack. A 73-year-old woman sustained shrapnel wounds. According to the State Emergency Service, two buildings were damaged and the injured woman hospitalized.

At around 2:20 pm, a tractor blew up in a field in Izium region between Verbivka and Vovchii Yar villages. Two men aged 39 and 47 died from their injuries.

Yesterday, the enemy continued terrorist attacks on settlements in Kharkiv, Chuhuiv and Kupiansk regions. A 65-year-old man was injured and hospitalized as a result of shelling in Kucherivka village, Kupiansk region. Three private buildings, outbuildings and vehicles were damaged.

A 57-year-old man was injured in Vovchansk, Chuhuiv region. He was hospitalized in a moderate condition.

In Vilkhuvatka village, Kharkiv region, shelling damaged a private building and an outbuilding.

Mine clearance of the de-occupied territories is ongoing. Yesterday pyrotechnic units of the State Emergency Service examined more than 12 hectares of territory and defused 167 explosive ordnance.

Donetsk oblast

Based on the information provided by Serhii Cherevatyi, spokesman of the Eastern Group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the AFU periodically attacks the invaders in Bakhmut when they see an opportunity to storm the city without significant losses on their side. These are elements of mobile defense, thanks to which the Armed Forces of Ukraine have been holding the city for 9 months. Currently, the Wagner terrorist organization remains the main assault force in the enemy attempts to capture Bakhmut.

Yurii Fedorenko, a soldier of the 92nd Separate Mechanised Brigade, said that Ukrainian defenders are expecting provocations from russian invaders towards Bakhmut on the eve of May 9.

Iryna Vereshchuk, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine reported that there are 48 children left in the settlements of Donetsk oblast where forced evacuation has been announced.

Since the start of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Donetsk Regional State Emergency Service has responded to 5,000 calls for explosive ordnance and found 95,000 shells, mines, ammunition and missile remnants.

At night, russians launched a missile attack on Kramatorsk, injuring 1 person and damaging a school, 14 buildings, a hospital and a children’s rehabilitation centre.

Towards Donetsk, Avdiivka suffered two massive shelling attacks, shells hit three streets. Kurakhove was shelled three times, damaging an agricultural enterprise.

Towards Horlivka, 4 buildings in Vasiukivka, Soledar community, and 1 building in Toretsk community were damaged. There was shelling in the outskirts of Chasiv Yar community.

Towards Lysychansk, a man was injured in Siversk, an apartment building and 2 private buildings were damaged. Russians shelled Lyman community 6 times, causing no casualties or destruction.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration said that yesterday Russians injured 2 civilians in Kramatorsk and Siversk.

Luhansk oblast

The enemy tried to put pressure from two sides yesterday.

For example, in Svatove region, russians tried to improve their tactical position near Novoselivske, which was destroyed to the ground, but were repelled. The enemy also unsuccessfully attacked Bilohorivka. The enemy also attacked Bilohorivka from the air with an air strike.

Makiivka, Dibrova and Bilohorivka were shelled with artillery.

Driving licenses will be replaced in the occupied territories for three years without passing exams for the right to drive and without a medical examination.

Referring to the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, the occupation authorities are threatening to remove children from hospital registrations for not attending compulsory examinations.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Acting head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ivan Vyhivskyi reported that the Irpin Police Department, rebuilt after russian shelling, was opened in Kyiv oblast. This department became a shelter for local residents during the russian offensive on the city in March 2022. At the same time, the memorial square of the policeman Serhiy Blyznyuk, who died at the time, was opened. According to him, 112 police units have been completely destroyed, 196 have been damaged, and 367 are in temporarily occupied territories.

The police identified a paratrooper of the russian army who shot at the cars of civilians of Irpin during evacuation from the city. On March 5, 2022, on the way out of the city, the russians opened fire on a convoy of cars with the inscriptions “Children” and “Evacuation”, which was moving in the direction of the Zhytomyr highway – five civilians were killed, seven were wounded, including a child.

Liquidation of the consequences of enemy shelling on the territory of Kyiv and the oblast continues. In one of the villages of Kyiv oblast, pyrotechnicians of the Mobile Rescue Center of Rapid Response of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine removed and destroyed the X-55 cruise missile.

In Kyiv, during the inspection of the territory of Sviatoshyn Forestry, pyrotechnics found remnants of Hrad ammunition. As reported by the Kyiv Rescue Service, in general, during the week, the pyrotechnic unit checked about 2 hectares of land in the Obolonskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts of Kyiv and found several remnants of used reactive ammunition.

The Kyiv Regional Military Administration reported that the urgent needs of the communities of Kyiv oblast, arranging shelters in educational institutions, providing the population with high-quality medical services and support for displaced persons were discussed at a meeting with representatives of the International Organization for Migration of the United Nations. Over the past year, 700,000 people from 24 communities of Kyiv oblast have received help from the organization.

An educational and training event with the participation of military instructors from Canada and Ukraine took place on April 29 at the base of the educational and training center Volunteer Unit “Ukraine” named for Semen Palii. Military instructors who took part in military conflicts came to Bila Tserkva to pass on their experience to the soldiers of volunteer formations. In the complex of combat training, methods of training military personnel in tactical medicine, martial arts, tactics of conducting combat operations as part of the unit were reproduced.

The “Idea of the Nation” charitable sports event in support of the defenders of Azovstal and their families will take place in Kyiv on the territory of VDNG “Urban Park”. As reported in the KCSA, on May 5 the “Azov” brigade will celebrate the 9th anniversary of the creation of the unit, and this year’s commemoration program will be organized in honor of the “Azov” fighters who have fallen since 2014, as well as the defenders o Azovstal who have been there for almost a year captured by the enemy.

Zhytomyr oblast

The State Energy Supervision Inspectorate of Ukraine reported that about 180 objects of critical infrastructure in the field of energy and heat supply were damaged due to hostilities in Zhytomyr oblast. To date, the operator of distribution systems has restored all damaged energy facilities, which made it possible to provide electricity to more than 600,000 consumers.

The Zhytomyr RMA reported that more than 60 educators from the East and South found shelter in the oblast. These are teachers from Donetsk, Luhansk, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv and Kherson regions, most of whom, until the last, conducted classes under shelling in shelters, online classes with students from abroad, and helped our defenders in the front-line territories.

Head of the RMA Vitaliy Bunechko said that the graduation of the first group of TRO and DFTG representatives took place in the oblast, who were trained in aerial reconnaissance and the use of UAVs. The military was trained as part of the national program “Army of Drones”, which has been operating in Ukraine for more than six months.

A program of financial payments for war-affected families with children who lost one or both breadwinners as a result of hostilities will be launched in Zhytomyr oblast. The new program of assistance to residents of the oblast is another step as part of cooperation with the UN Children’s Fund UNICEF. The project coordinator is the public organization In Touch Ukraine Foundation.

The Zhytomyr Regional Center for Physical Education and Sports for Persons with Disabilities “Invasport” reported that eight war veteran athletes, who represented Zhytomyr oblast at the qualifying competitions for the 2023 Invincible Games, won 11 awards of various kinds. This enables them to apply for participation in the International Veterans Competition as part of the National Team of Ukraine.

Sumy oblast

The Sumy RMA reported that the russian military has struck 139 hits with mortars, barrel artillery and grenade launchers against four communities of Sumy oblast. Bilopillia, Yunakivka, Shalyhine and Seredina-Buda communities came under shelling.

At night and in the morning, the occupiers continued to shell the border areas of the oblast. Mortars were fired at Nova Sloboda and Yunakivka communities: 4 and 5 shots. Shalyhine and Seredina-Buda communities were attacked by the enemy with barrel artillery – 4 and 2 hits, respectively. The same type of weapon was used to fire at Bilopillia community – 4 hits.

A tractor blew up on a mine during field work in Seredyna-Buda region. The explosion occurred due to a violation of mine safety rules. The tractor driver was hospitalized with injuries to his arms and legs.

The ‘North’ Operational Command reported that the russian army fired 19 artillery shells at the town of Seredyna-Buda, Shostka region. The munition hit the local school: the roof was pierced and the walls were cut, the water pipe was broken, and the gas boiler house was destroyed. Two houses of residents were destroyed, and an apartment building was damaged.

The Sumy City Council reported that Germany donated three cars to Sumy doctors and furniture for local schools. Help was provided by the city of Celle, a partner of Sumy.

Chernihiv oblast

The General Prosecutor’s Office reported that a 14-year-old boy was killed in a russian aerial bomb attack in Chernihiv oblast. On the afternoon of May 1, the occupiers attacked a school building in the village of Lyzunivka, Novhorod-Siverskyi region, with two guided aerial bombs. The boy was nearby and did not have time to hide in the shelter. A local resident was injured.

The Chernihiv RMA reported that on May 1, during the mortar shelling of the village of Karpovychi, Novhorod-Siverskyi region, the occupiers damaged a gas pipe. Emergency work is underway.

The ‘North’ Operational Command reported that the occupiers continued to attack the border areas of the Chernihiv oblast with various types of weapons. Nine explosions were recorded in the villages of Arkhipivka and Leonivka of the Semenivka community. Later, in the same community, 10 mortar explosions were heard in the village of Bleshnya. 5 mortar hits were recorded in Mykolaivka, Berezna community. In the Horodnya community, the enemy shelled the village of Hasychivka – 8 hits from self-propelled guns.

The ‘North’ Operational Command reported that the russian military made 10 blows from barrel artillery on the villages of Krasniy Khutir and Buda-Vorobiivska of the Novhorod-Siverskyi community. In the afternoon, the enemy shelled the city of Semenivka with MLRS – 21 hits were recorded. The explosion caused a residential building to catch fire, and two local residents were injured. The village of Hirsk of the Snovsk community came under artillery fire – 12 hits were recorded, a private house was damaged.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Chernihiv oblast reported that rescuers organized a campaign for schoolchildren called “Avoid. Save. Help” in the city of Mena. At the end of April, employees of the State Emergency Service and patrol police, together with medics, conducted training for children on safety rules and behavior in emergency situations.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

80 private houses and 24 multi-storey buildings were damaged by the strike on Pavlohrad on May 1. 5 schools, 4 pre-schools, shops, and 7 cars were damaged. The number of wounded is 48 people, six of whom are children. 48 people were injured, including 6 children.

UAH 9 million was allocated to repair the damage caused by russian shells.

Mayor Oleksandr Sayuk said In the evening of 2 May, the russian army shelled Nikopol.

Yesterday, in Dnipro, they paid farewell to a mother and daughter who died as a result of the latest russian missile attack. Olha and little Veronika were buried at the cemetery in Chapli. Olha’s husband is in hospital.

The press service of the Dnipro Regional Military Administration said that residents and displaced persons, including the elderly and people with disabilities, are being evacuated from the communities of the Dnipro region that are shelled by russians on a daily basis. Over the past eight months, 19 evacuation operations have already delivered people to the western regions of Ukraine.

The Polish government donated generators, ultrasound and electrocardiogram equipment, operating tables, cardiac monitors, ventilators, orthopedic boards, and medical tactical kits to the Dnipro military hospital.

Fourteen humanitarian aid distribution points were set up and 50,362 food packages from the UN World Food Programme were distributed in Nikopol.

Vinnytsia oblast

The businesses relocated to Vinnytsia have created more than 1,500 jobs. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, 295 businesses have relocated to Vinnytsia. As of 1 May, 77% of them were operating.

A week-long training camp for sniper candidates is being held in Vinnytsia oblast. Conscripts, contract soldiers, and mobilized soldiers take part.

​​It has been reported that four defenders from Vinnytsia oblast, residents of the Tomashpillia, Tulchyn, Khmilnyk and Stryzhava communities, have been killed. 

Kirovohrad oblast

The mayor of Oleksandria visited the soldiers on the frontline and presented the unit commander with flags of the city and Oleksandria region.

Cherkasy oblast

In Uman, 127 victims sought aid after the missile strike. Out of 99 apartments in the building, 14 were completely destroyed, and 14 are considered to be in critical condition. 26 people need to be rehoused.

Six children were killed in a missile attack on a high-rise building in Uman. The shelling killed Uliana Troichuk – 8 years old, Sofiia Shulga – 11 years old, Kyrylo Pysariev – 17 years old, Ivan Odaiskyi – 1.5 years old, Oleksii Lysak – 16 years old, and Alina Barchenko – 10 years old.

The French ambassador visited the site of the Uman tragedy, where a russian missile killed 23 people. The families of the casualties will receive financial assistance.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

National Police of Zaporizhzhia region reported that over the past day, russian occupation forces carried out 56 air and artillery strikes in Zaporizhzhia oblast, as well as attacks with unmanned aerial vehicles. The russian military conducted an air strike on the frontline town of Orikhiv. As a result of the russian enemy attack, the territory of an industrial enterprise was destroyed, and civilian homes were also damaged: windows and doors were smashed, roofs were destroyed, and facades and walls were smashed. The russian military conducted an airstrike on Hulyaipole. More than 10 houses on three streets of the town were destroyed and some cars were damaged.

In Zaporizhzhia region, in the occupied city of Tokmak, the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed a cafe where the russian occupiers were walking with Highmars. Our military worked out several places where the occupiers were based.

In Zaporizhzhia oblast, racists are massively “squeezing” businesses from their rightful owners and spreading the fake that Romania allegedly claims part of Ukraine’s territory.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to the Mykolaiv RMA, on the night of May 2, the enemy fired mortars at the waters of the Ochakiv community. There were no casualties. The Kutsurub community also came under attack. Two people were injured as a result of the shelling, and private houses were damaged. The settlement is without electricity, gas, water and internet after the shelling.

Over the past day, to eliminate the consequences of the russian fascist aggression, units of the State Emergency Service were engaged 22 times to identify explosive devices, 197 explosive devices were seized.

Almost three kilometers of new polyethylene pipes of various diameters were delivered to Mykolaiv with the support of the Kingdom of Denmark. The current water supplied to the city’s homes is very corrosive in composition and quickly “eats away” at the pipelines. Therefore, it will take specialists more than one year to overcome all the consequences and install hundreds of kilometers of new networks in the city.

Odesa oblast

The russian army has reduced the number of missile carriers in the Black Sea from two to one. The possible volley is up to four missiles. This was reported by the Ukrainian Navy. Currently, there are eight russian ships on combat duty in the Black Sea and one ship in the Sea of Azov.

A thematic event “Ukrainian amulet for a soldier-defender” was held for students of Odesa Lyceum No. 23 and children receiving social services from the Center for Social Services of Odesa City Council. During the event, the children made patriotic amulets with wishes for Ukrainian soldiers who bravely defend our land and demonstrate their readiness to give their lives for peace and tranquility in their homeland. The crafts will be sent to the wounded defenders. The support of children is especially dear to each of our soldiers.

Kherson oblast

The Kherson Military Administration reported, russian occupiers shelled Kherson and Bilozerska communities. Three residents were killed and five were wounded. The russian occupiers used artillery and aircraft, and also caused damage to civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings, commercial premises and vehicles.

In the temporarily occupied territories, Ukraine and the russian occupiers continue to abduct pro-Ukrainian citizens and set up new torture chambers to hold them. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, russians set up one of these torture chambers in the police department of the temporarily occupied Chaplynka, Kherson region. The occupiers are holding up to 10 civilians, including minors.

Sappers are making Kherson region safer with the help of mechanized demining machines. Since the beginning of the work, two machines have already made more than 40 engagements and destroyed more than 100 explosive items.

In Kakhovka, on the left bank of the Kherson oblast, the invaders demand that local residents receive russian passports within a month. If they refuse, they threaten them with deportation and arrest.

Volyn oblast

The championship of Ukraine in weightlifting among boys and girls under 15 and under 17 years, dedicated to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has started in Lutsk.

Deputies of the Lutsk City Council underwent military training at the Ternove Pole training center. During their three-hour stay at the training ground, they were trained in three disciplines: tactical medicine, combat management and aerial reconnaissance.

Zakarpattia oblast

Mykola Hleba, famous Zakarpattia carver, created a sculpture of the indomitable Hero Oleksandr Matsievskyi, who was shot by the russians after saying Glory to Ukraine!. A year ago, Mykola carved a sculpture of a Ukrainian boy who was crying on the border with Poland. Later, it won the Living Heritage Events competition in London, and the artist donated her winnings to the needs of the Armed Forces.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The RMA reported that night vision devices, interactive whiteboards, which enable commanders to monitor the battle in real time and quickly make decisions, various tactical devices, walkie-talkies, as well as a lot of household equipment, worth UAH 3.5 million were sent to the military from the oblast.

The RMA awarded Lieutenant Colonel Mykhailo Tarasov, commander of the rifle battalion of the 10 separate mountain-assault brigade Edelveis of the West operational command of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, with highest award the For services to Prykarpattia medal.

Lviv oblast

Lviv RMA is developing a plan of measures to implement the Concept of Support for Defenders of Ukraine. The essence of the Concept is to create such conditions in the Lviv region under which our Defenders, in the future veterans, are successfully resocialized.

Rostislav Hapatin, director of the Karpaty research and mechanical plant, located in Novyi Rozdol, stated that the plant plans to start production of new diesel locomotives within five years.

The Center for the provision of social services of the Pidkaminsk settlement council of Zolochiv region received a minibus, hygiene products, shoes and detergents. The fire department of the Pidkaminsk community was provided with a uniform for rescuers and parts for a car. Assistance was provided by Osteuropahilfe Starnberg, Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen und München e. V. German organizations.

Strii community received a car for a mobile team of social and psychological assistance to respond to appeals in a timely manner, from the UN Population Fund.

Rivne oblast
