It has been the 447th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The russian federation carried out another massive missile strike on civilian and critical infrastructure facilities in Ukraine. The russian aggressor cynically continues to employ tactics of terror.

The russian army carried out 27 missile and 37 aviation strikes, conducted approximately 20 artillery shelling from multiple rocket launcher systems on Ukrainian troops’ positions and populated areas. According to updated information, the russian military used 6 air-launched ballistic missiles Kynjal, 9 cruise missiles Kalibr, and 10 ground-based missiles (S-400, Iskander-M) to carry out missile strikes, all of which were destroyed by Ukrainian troops. Russian troops also launched 2 missiles from S-300 on the civilian infrastructure of Kostiantynivka, Donetsk oblast.

Civilian infrastructure was destroyed. As a result of the shelling of the populated areas of Dvorichna, Vovchansk, and Tyshchenkivka, Kharkiv oblast, there are civilian casualties and injuries, private residential houses have been destroyed, as well as hospitals and other civilian infrastructure.

The russian army continues to concentrate its main efforts on Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Mariinka directions. There were 44 military clashes in the mentioned sectors of the front. Bakhmut and Marinka remain at the center of combat actions.

No signs of russian offensive formations have been detected towards Volyn and Polissia. The units of the armed forces of the republic of belarus continue to carry out tasks in the border areas with Ukraine. The movement of units of the russian territorial forces, trained at Belarusian training grounds, towards the areas of hostilities, is ongoing.

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the russian army continues to maintain military presence in the border areas with Ukraine. They conducted mortar and artillery shelling of populated areas in Muravyi, Chernihiv oblast; Romashkove, Iskryskivshchyna, Volfyne, Kyndrativka, Sadky, Zapsillia, Sumy oblast; as well as Kozacha Lopan, Hoptivka, Lukyantsi, Hatysche, Pletenivka, Budarky, Nesterne, Kruhle, Zemlianky, Starytsia, and Budarky, Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, russian soldiers carried out unsuccessful offensive actions in the areas of Masiutivka, Kharkiv oblast, and Novoselivka and Stelmakhivka, Luhansk oblast. They conducted airstrikes near the populated areas of Budarky, Vilshana, Kyslivka, Kotliarivka, and Tabaivka, Kharkiv oblast. Russian artillery and mortar fire targeted Dvorichanske, Kamyanka, Krasne Pershe, Fiholivka, Novomlynsk, Dvorichna, Masyutivka, Kyndrashivka, Kupiansk, Kyslivka, Tabaivka, Berestove, Kharkiv oblast, and Stelmakhivka, Luhansk oblast.

Towards Lyman, russian military conducted offensive actions in the area of Bilohorivka, Luhansk oblast. Russian troops carried out airstrikes in the areas of Bilohorivka, Luhansk oblast and Spirne, Siversk, and Chervone, Donetsk oblast. The towns of Makiyivka, Nevske, and Bilohorivka, Luhansk region, as well as Verkhniokamianske, Torske, and Spirne, Donetsk oblast, were shelled from artillery.

Towards Bakhmut, the russian army continues to conduct offensive actions. Fierce battles for Bakhmut are raging. Moreover, russian troops conducted unsuccessful offensive actions towards the settlement of Ivanivske. They carried out airstrikes in the areas of Bohdanivka, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, and Toretsk, Donetsk oblast. Grigoryivka, Bohdanivka, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Chasiv Yar, Stupochky, Pivnichne, and Toretsk, Donetsk oblast suffered from russian artillery shelling.

Towards Avdiivka, the russian army continues to destroy the infrastructure of populated areas, conducting airstrikes on Avdiivka and Vodiane, and shelling the towns of Novokalynove, Berdychiv, Stepove, Avdiivka, Pervomaiske, Nevelske, and Karlivka, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Mariinka, Ukrainian defense units repelled numerous russian attacks in the area of the city of Marinka. The russian army conducted an airstrike in the area of Krasnohorivka. The towns of Hostre, Maryinka, and Pobieda, Donetsk oblast suffered from russian shelling.

Towards Shakhtarsk, russian soldiers conducted airstrikes in the areas of Vuhledar and Velyka Novosilka. They shelled the towns of Novomykhailivka, Paraskeviivka, Vuhledar, Prechystivka, and Novoukrainka, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, the russian army is on the defensive. They carried out airstrikes on the populated areas of Vremivka in the Donetsk region, Novodanilivka in the Zaporizhzhia region, and Berislav, Kizomys, and Mala Tokmachka, Kherson oblast Moreover, russian military conducted artillery shelling on the towns of Olihivske, Malynivka, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Huliaipilske, Biloheiria, Shcherbaky, Stepove, and Kamianske, Zaporizhzhia oblast, as well as Tokarivka and Kizomys in the Kherson region, and the city of Kherson.

Russian soldiers continue to plunder the population of Ukraine, appropriating the grain harvest of peaceful citizens. In the city of Feodosia, in the temporarily occupied Crimea, the so-called russian occupation “authorities” are attempting to export the stolen grain to their ports, loading it onto a Syrian vessel Souria under sanctions.

The Air Force of the Armed Forces  of Ukraine carried out 13 strikes on russian personnel and military equipment concentration areas, as well as 3 strikes on russian air defense missile systems. Ukrainian soldiers destroyed 1 Iranian strike UAV Shahed and 2 reconnaissance drones.

Units of rocket troops and artillery struck 5 russian personnel buildups, 3 radio-electronic warfare stations, 2 ammunition depots, and 1 fuel and lubricant point.


Russia once again committed missile terror at night. This was announced by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny. Around 3:30 in the morning, russia attacked Ukraine with 18 missiles of various types of air, sea and land-based. Air defense forces managed to destroy all 18 missiles. These include 6 X-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles, 9 Kalibr cruise missiles and three land-based missiles (S-400, Iskander-M). 

Russia carried out 8 air attacks on Kyiv. This was reported by the command of the United Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. “This night was the eighth air attack on Kyiv since the beginning of May. The enemy launched the attack from different directions, using all available resources, from drones to cruise missiles. The density of fire on the capital was maximum, but all targets were identified and destroyed thanks to the multi-level principle of echeloning of air defense,” noted the commander of the United Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Lieutenant General Serhiy Naev. 

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine announced that Ukraine officially became a member of the cyber center under NATO. The Ukrainian flag was raised in Tallinn.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, at least 24 settlements were under enemy artillery, mortar and aviation attacks.

Maksym Khaustov, director of the Regional Health Department, reported that the Health Ministry has to approve the creation of one hospital district and seven clusters by 1 June.

The border guards shot down a russian Kartograf drone with 12 lenses. Referring to the State Border Guard Service, it was used to create terrain plans.

Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration said that during the restoration of power supply lines in the region, pyrotechnics defused a record number of enemy mines. Under the almost completely destroyed power line between Hrakove and Mospanove villages Chuhuiv region, 250 anti-tank mines were found at once on a section of only 300 meters long. This is a record number of explosive ordnance in one area for the entire period of demining the areas under the power lines. According to the State Emergency Service, since the beginning of the de-occupation of the region, pyrotechnics have found and defused 60,609 explosive ordnance.

Yesterday russian invaders massively shelled settlements of Chuhuiv, Kharkiv and Kupiansk regions with artillery, mortars and aviation.

As a result of an artillery attack of Dvorichna settlement, Kupiansk region, 2 civilians were killed – a man and a woman. One more man received shrapnel wounds and was hospitalized. 

The previous evening, the enemy massively shelled Vovchansk city, Chuhuiv region. At least 3 residential buildings, outbuildings, and a local hospital were damaged and some shells landed in an open area.

In Tyshchenkivka village, Kupiansk region, at least 4 residential buildings, outbuildings were damaged and fires broke out as a result of MRLs attack.

De-mining works are ongoing. Yesterday pyrotechnic units of the State Emergency Service defused 99 explosive ordnance.

Donetsk oblast

According to  the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, russian soldiers are situated in the buildings of a school in occupied Yasynuvata. They have hidden military equipment in the school yard and are using the basement as a shelter.

Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ground Forces Commander informed that the defence forces are counter-attacking in some areas near Bakhmut. At the front line, he planned further defence with commanders and presented awards to soldiers for their heroism.

Hanna Maliar, Deputy Minister of Defence, reported that over the past few days, Ukrainian troops have liberated about twenty square kilometres in the north and south of the Bakhmut suburbs. Heavy fighting continues for the city with varying results.

Mariupol City Council said that the invaders want to demolish an apartment building with 17 families living there. More than a month ago, the building was disconnected from water and electricity supply. Residents are being evicted to a hostel..

Donetsk Regional Police confirmed that the police officers, who were on their way to evacuate people and were attacked near Chasiv Yar yesterday, suffered concussion and head injuries. After being examined by doctors, the White Angels returned in another vehicle and evacuated nine residents of Bakhmut and one child.

Based on the information provided by Vitalii Barabash, head of Avdiivka City Military Administration, in the morning, the enemy launched an air strike on Avdiivka Coke Plant, firing four missiles. There were no casualties.

At midnight, russians launched a missile attack on Kramatorsk, damaging 3 apartment buildings and a boiler house, with no casualties. The shelling damaged 11 apartment buildings, a kindergarten, a boiler house, a service station and communal premises.

Kostiantynivka City Military Administration reported about enemy shelling with S-300 systems at night and damaged five facilities on the territory of the former military enlistment office, a school, and a gas pipeline. There were no casualties.

Towards Volnovakha, there were one air strike and 48 attacks on Vuhledar. Novoukrainka, Prechystivka and Maksymivka were also under attack.

Towards Donetsk, a man was injured in Pervomaisk, Ocheretyne community. Three buildings in Krasnohorivka were damaged and there was isolated shelling of Avdiivka. In Kurakhove community: 3 buildings in Ostrivske, buildings on 3 streets in Hostre, 1 building and 2 business buildings in Kurakhove were damaged.

Towards Horlivka, the enemy attacked Kostiantynivka with S-300 missiles, damaging 3 buildings, a school and a gas pipeline. Chasiv Yar was under heavy shelling: 1 person was injured, 17 private and 3 apartment buildings damaged.

Towards Lysychansk, a school and a shop in Pereizne of Zvanivka community, a building and an administrative building in Siversk were damaged. Torske, Zarichne and Ozerne of Lyman community were shelled.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, head of the Donetsk RMA, reported that yesterday russians killed 4 civilians in Avdiivka. 4 more were injured. Moreover, in Bohorodychne, the body of a person killed during the occupation was exhumed. 

Luhansk oblast

While there were no combat engagements towards Lyman yesterday, in Svatove region the enemy tried to improve its tactical position near Novoselivske but failed. There are no residents left in this settlement, but russians do not give up their intentions to capture it. However, all their attempts are stopped by our defenders. A few civilians still remain in Stelmakhivka and the enemy is aware of this. Therefore, there is artillery shelling almost every day. Last night we managed to evacuate an elderly man from there. Kolomyichysk Military Administration has already provided him with accommodation, food and other necessary aid.

Except for Stelmakhivka, the enemy also targeted Makiivka and Bilohorivka.

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, in the so-called “Luhansk People’s Republic” payments to university staff are delayed, the invaders are in a hurry to conduct forced examinations of children – they want to complete them in May.

Roman Vlasenko, head of Sievierodonetsk Regional Military Administration informed that the recent powerful explosions not only at the frontline positions of the russian army, but also in the rear, indicate that the entire region is being protected by the Defence Forces.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The spokesman of the Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Yuriy Ignat said that 6 Daggers missles that were flying to Kyiv were destroyed by anti-aircraft fire. He noted that the capital remains at the epicenter of events and is a priority target for the enemy, therefore Kyiv is protected by serious means of air defense.

The head of Kyiv RMA Ruslan Kravchenko said that thanks to the precise and professional work of the air defense in the Kyiv oblast, the enemy targets were destroyed. In one of the communities of Kyiv oblast, the roof of a private house was damaged due to falling debris.

In Kyiv, the fall of debris was recorded in Solomianskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Obolonskyi and Darnytskyi districts of the capital. The greatest damage occurred in the Solomianskyi district, where a non-residential building and automobile equipment caught fire. In other areas, damage is insignificant.

The mayor of the city, Vitaliy Klychko, informed about the three victims in the Solomianskyi district. Also, as a result of the shelling of Kyiv by the russian military, the fragments of the rocket fell on the territory of the capital’s zoo. None of the animals were injured, the greenery was damaged. The capital’s mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said that Kyiv received another new, state-of-the-art fire vehicle from German and Polish partners. This is a car from the batch that was transferred to Kyiv by the German twin city of Leipzig, financed by the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany, and produced in the shortest possible time by Polish partners. 4 such fire trucks arrived in the Ukrainian capital a month ago.

The KCSA reported that from June, trainings will begin on the basis of VcentriHUB public spaces, where all those willing will be taught to provide psychological support to people who find themselves in crisis situations. There are also lectures on pre-medical care, after which participants will receive certificates.

A presentation of the “Portraits of Mariupol” project took place in Kyiv. The exhibition at the National Museum of the History of Ukraine collects the stories of 27 immigrants whose lives were changed by the full-scale russian invasion.

Zhytomyr oblast

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the Zhytomyr City Council has received more than 800 applications regarding damaged or destroyed housing due to shelling. Based on the results of a preliminary inspection of housing facilities, 311 were identified as damaged, 55 as significantly damaged, and 18 as destroyed. This is stated in the publication “Monitoring of the Zhytomyr City Council regarding the observance of citizens’ housing rights”, published on the website of the Commissioner of the VRU.

The Estonian Center for International Development reported that the construction of a modular kindergarten in Ovruch was completed and handed over for furnishing. It is noted that the kindergarten opens its doors at the beginning of June.

Athletes from Zhytomyr oblast won 11 gold medals at the Ukrainian military-sports all-around championship, which was held from May 12 to 14 in Kyiv. The regional team was represented by athletes from the Zhytomyr School of Young Paratroopers and the Zhytomyr Military Institute named after S.P. Korolev

Zhytomyr RMA reported that residents of the oblast will be able to participate in the “Draw – Give” action soon. The participants of the event will paint mugs with elements of Polissia embroidery and present them to defenders who are being treated in hospitals of the oblast. The event will be held on May 18 in the open space of New Boulevard in Zhytomyr.

Sumy oblast

The ‘North’ Operational Command reported that the occupiers inflicted 136 blows on four communities of Sumy oblast – with mortars, barrel artillery, self-propelled guns, grenade launchers, and large-caliber machine guns. Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Shalyhine and Nova Sloboda communities came under shelling – the power line was damaged and a residential building caught fire due to shelling in the last one.

The ‘North’ Operational Command reported that the russian military attacked Bilopillia hromada with mortars, 7 hits were counted.

Before noon, the occupiers shelled the village of Romashkove in the Seredina-Buda community. According to the message of the ‘North’ Operational Command, 10 hits, probably from barrel artillery, were recorded.

A former physical education teacher from Sumy oblast became a border guard after losing two military sons. Lyudmila Gutsko, a teacher with 30 years of experience, has been protecting the border of the Sumy oblast for a year and a half. Lyudmila’s sons were both paratroopers: the eldest, Ivan, died of an illness, and the youngest was blown up in 2017 on a stretch in the Verkhniotoretske region of Donetsk oblast. According to Lyudmila, immediately after this loss, she wanted to go to serve, but first she had to help her son’s widow look after her grandchildren – three-year-old and eight-month-old boys.

In the Trostyanets community, benefactors from the Netherlands are helping to repair a school destroyed by the russian military. The premises were left without windows, doors and a roof, the floor and electrical networks were damaged. The Dutch BF Opendoor Ukraine allocated 45,000 euros for the restoration of the school, which teaches 42 students from the villages of Soldatske and Nytsakha.

Okhtyrka City Council reported that the work of the Primary Health Care Center, which was destroyed due to russian shelling, has been restored in the city. The facade and interior walls of the medical facility were damaged, doors and windows were broken. Help in reconstruction was provided by Save the Children in Ukraine.

Chernihiv oblast

The State Border Service reported that two border communities came under russian shelling in Chernihiv oblast yesterday – 15 explosions were heard on their territories. In the village of Medvedivka in the Semenivka region, 5 mortar hits were recorded, in the village of Muravyi in the Novhorod-Siverskyi region – 10 hits from barrel artillery.

The ‘North’ Operational Command reported that the occupiers continued to shell the village of Muravyi, Novhorod-Siverskyi community. 4 hits from barrel artillery were recorded.

The Department for Civil Protection and Defense Work reported that as a result of military actions on May 15, residents of 5 settlements of Koryukivka region in Chernihiv oblast were left without electricity.

In the Ichnya community, philanthropists from the ZOA organization help residents rebuild their houses. Support is provided to residents of the Krupychpole and Dorogynka regions: about 100 families received money to replace windows and doors, repair roofs, and replace heating.

Sosnytsia community reported that high school students held a charity fair in the village of Sosnytsia in Chernihiv oblast – more than UAH 80,000 was collected to help the Armed Forces. At the fair, children sold homemade sweets and souvenirs.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

The occupiers shelled residential areas of Chervonohryhorivka TC and the city of Nikopol with heavy artillery in the afternoon of May, 15. They fired 30 shells toward the settlements. Three people were injured in Nikopol. Fourteen multi-storey buildings and seven private houses were damaged, one outbuilding was destroyed and eight outbuildings were damaged, vehicles, three private enterprises, and a service station were damaged.

In June, the city centre of Dnipro will host a temporary cultural space called the Module of Temporality (MOT), a two-storey building made up of 27 container modules with an exhibition of works by international and Ukrainian artists. It will host a series of film screenings and lectures. The aim of the project is to draw attention to Ukraine and raise funds for the restoration of cultural institutions affected by russian aggression and to the cultural projects being implemented in the country despite the war.

The French government and the International Organisation for Migration have decided to allocate more than EUR 7 million for the reconstruction of two dormitories in Dnipro as temporary social housing for Mariupol residents in Dnipro, thus strategically supporting the #IMariupolLife project.

Vinnytsia oblast

The train connection through Vinnytsia has resumed. After the missile attacks on Khmelnytskyi, the train service was diverted to a detour. All subsequent trains will travel via traditional lines, including Vinnytsia, Khmelnytsky, and Ternopil. To ensure the safety of the trains, additional trains continue to run on schedule for backup connections until the end of the day.

Oleksandra Hruszko survived two Famines and the Second World War in the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz. She perceives the Second World War as a personal pain for the rest of her life, because, she says, it was not a war, but the extermination of the Ukrainian people. This year, in July, she turns one hundred years old. The best gift for her would be Ukraine’s victory.

Kirovohrad oblast

An additional UAH 18 million 570 thousand will be allocated from the regional budget of Kirovohrad Oblast to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine and provide social security for the families of deceased and wounded defenders. This conclusion was made by the Permanent Commission of the Regional Council on Budget, Finance, and Investments.

Poltava oblast

Last night, an air alert lasted for two hours. The enemy fired missiles at Kyiv, approaching the capital through Cherkasy, Poltava, and Chernihiv oblasts. Air defence systems worked out all the targets, shooting down at least four missiles and one UAV.

Cherkasy oblast

Cherkasy defenders received two special systems to suppress the control channels of enemy UAVs, which led to their forced landing. In addition, the soldiers received two four-wheel drive vehicles purchased at the expense of a socially responsible business.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to Zaporizhzhya Regional Military Administration, over the past day, russian troops shelled 14 localities in Zaporizhzhia oblast. 76 artillery attacks on Zaliznychne, Olhove, Malynivka, Shcherbaky, 12 MLRS attacks on Huliaipole, Novodanylivka, Bilohirya, Stepove, Kamianske and 2 air attacks on Mala Tokmachka. The destruction of 24 civilian objects was recorded. russians shelled Novoyakovlivka. Grad systems were used to hit civilian homes in Stepnohirsk. russian military struck high-rise buildings, private houses and outbuildings in Orikhove. There were no casualties.

In the temporarily occupied Berdiansk, they are looking for people to work in the prison created by the russians, located on the territory of penal colony No. 77. The people who will take this job will be exposed to torture and abuse, as the russian military is doing there.

Yuriy Malashko, the head of Zaporizhzhya Regional Military Administration reported that russian soldiers use various methods to force people to “voluntarily” evacuate from the occupied territories. For example, they shell Tokmak with cluster munitions and force people to re-register their cars with Ukrainian license plates. Pressure on ZNPP employees and abductions of civilians continue.

Mykolaiv oblast

There were five attacks on Ochakivska and Snihurivska communities. A preschool, businesses and private homes were damaged. Fortunately, there were no casualties. Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration reported that due to the successful actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the enemy intensified shelling in various directions, including rear cities such as Mykolaiv and Mykolaiv oblast.

The head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, Vitalii Kim, met with representatives of the “Global Care Force” international volunteer mission. “Global Care Force” founder and executive director Harry Morsch and global program director Roxanne Jones came to Mykolaiv specifically to discuss expanding the mission’s volunteer activities in Mykolaiv oblast, including programs in the field of medicine and healthcare.

In Mykolaiv oblast, “Dobrobat” volunteers are restoring the roofs of houses in Partizanske village, Pervomaisk community, which suffered from russian shelling. Usually, they cover one roof with slate per one day.

Mykolaiv Primary Health Care Center No. 4 received computer equipment from the “Save the Children” charity. The centre received 10 laptops, 10 printers and 5 routers.

Odesa oblast

The South Operational Command reported that the threat of missile and drone attacks remains for Odesa oblast, as does the danger of mines on land and at sea. As of the morning of May 16, the enemy increased its naval grouping in the Black Sea to 12 units, including the presence of missile carriers. The submarine was joined by a surface frigate. Subsequently, they were both brought to their home bases. And a small missile ship with eight more “Kalibr” missiles almost for the first time since the full-scale invasion entered the Azov Sea to perform tasks, where it continues to be on duty, probably as another element of providing cover and protection of the Crimean bridge,” the South Command reported.

Today, 20 vehicles, thermal imagers, radios, walkie-talkies and spare parts were sent to the front line from Podilske in Odesa oblast. This is not the first aid sent from this region to our military.

Odesa volunteers have invented a way to detect enemy Shaheds. Activists from the “Technicians” group suggest using marine searchlights for this purpose. The weight of such a light is about 35 kg and its power is 400 watts. Its purpose is to detect drowning people in the water. Kherson oblast

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The RMA reported that a working group has been created at the Khmelnytskyi NPP to implement the state barrier-free policy.

Chernivtsi oblast
