War in Ukraine today: latest news, May 12, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 443 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The russian army launched 4 missile strikes and 26 airstrikes, conducting over 20 shelling MLRS attacks. Private residential houses and other civilian infrastructure were damaged. Russian troops once again used the S-300 air defense system to carry out missile strikes on Kramatorsk and Zaporizhzhia. 

Ukraine is still under the threat of missile and aerial attacks across Ukraine remains high, as the russian army continues to employ terror tactics.

The russian army continues to concentrate its main efforts towards Luhansk, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Mariinka. In total, there were 36  russian attacks on these areas of the front, with Bakhmut and Mariinka remaining hot points of the combat.

Towards Volyn and Polissia, the operational situation remains unchanged, with no significant signs of russian formations detected.

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the russian army continues to maintain military presence in border areas with Ukraine. They carried out mortar and artillery shelling of populated areas in Volfyne, Sumy oblast, as well as Chervona Zoria, Veternarne, Hlyboke, Lyptsi, Staritsya, Ohirtseve, Hatyshche, Vovchansk, Nesterne, and Velykyi Burluk, Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, the russian artillery and mortar shelling targeted populated areas including Kamyanka, Krasne Pershe, Mytrofanivka, Fiholivka, Novomylynsk, Dvorichna, Zapadne, Kyslivka, Kharkiv oblast, and Stelmakhivka, Luhansk oblast.

Towards Lyman, the russian military conducted shelling of populated areas near the front line, including Makiivka, Bilohorivka, Luhansk oblast, Verkhniokamianske and Spirne, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Bakhmut, the russian army continues its offensive. Intense fighting is raging  in the city of Bakhmut. Additionally, russian soldiers conducted unsuccessful offensive actions towards Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Hryhorivka, and Stupochka. They also carried out airstrikes in the areas of Bohdanivka, Bakhmut, and New York. Fedorivka Druha, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Bogdanivka, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Chasiv Yar, Stupochka, Pivdne, Toretsk, Druzhba, Pivnichne, and New York in the Donetsk region were affected by russian shelling.

Towards Avdiivka, the russian military conducted aerial strikes in the areas of Avdiivka and Vodiane, and shelled populated areas in Stepove, Avdiivka, Netailove, and Pervomaiske, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Mariinka, the Ukrainian Armed Forces repelled numerous russian attacks in the area of the city of Mariinka. At the same time, Horste, Heorhiivka, Maksymilianivka, Mariinka, and Pobieda, Donetsk oblast were shelled by russians.

Towards Shakhtarsk, the russian military did not conduct offensive actions. They carried out airstrikes in the areas of Prechystivka and Velyka Novosilka, and shelled populated areas of Paraskoviivka, Kostiantynivka, Novomykhailivka, Vuhledar, Novoukrainka, and Prechystivka.

Towards Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, the russian army continues defensive operations. It conducted airstrikes in the areas of Novopil, Donetsk oblast, Malynivka and Chervone in the Zaporizhzhia oblast, as well as Kizomys, Kherson oblast. Additionally, they shelled populated areas near the front line, including Vremivka and Novopil in the Donetsk region, Malynivka, Huliaipole, Bilohiria, Novoandriivka, Novopavlivka, Mali Scherbaky, and Kamianske, Zaporizhzhia oblast, as well as Kozatske, Sadove, Antonivka in the Kherson region, and the city of Kherson.

In addition to replenishing the units that suffered losses in personnel, the russian army is also forming new units. In Stavropol Krai, within the framework of the Southern Military District, formation of a separate motorized rifle brigade has begun, intended to strengthen the russian army operating on the territory of Ukraine. The vast majority of individuals who have signed contracts lack motivation to participate in combat actions, while the russian authorities seek to earn money.

The aviation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces conducted 4 strikes on areas where russian personnel and military equipment are concentrated. 

Additionally, units of missile forces and artillery targeted 3 areas with concentrations of russian personnel, 3 artillery units in firing positions, and a radio-electronic warfare station of the russian troops.

According to the Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko, since the full-scale invasion of russia into Ukraine began, about half a thousand churches and sacred structures of Ukraine have been destroyed or damaged. A significant part of these buildings has historical and cultural value and is a monument of architecture and art.

For over 2 months, not a single missile or drone launched by russia has reached the target in Kyiv. 

As a result of the russian shelling, part of consumers in 6 regions were left without electricity. “The coal mine in Donetsk region was de-energized. Due to the damage caused by the hostilities, some consumers in the Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Chernihiv, and Sumy regions also remain without electricity,” they noted.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, russian army shelled at least 19 settlements.

Oleksii Reznikov, Defence Minister of Ukraine said during a visit to Kharkiv oblast that the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine will order Oplot tanks for the Ukrainian army from Ukroboronprom.

Ivan Sokol, director of the Regional Civil Protection Department confirmed that the 46-year-old volunteer, who was under russian shelling in April and was seriously injured while on his way to evacuate a woman from Dvorichna community in Kupiansk region, died on 12 May.

Oleh Syniehubov, head of Kharkiv RMA, reported that today russians shelled a farm in Cherneshchyna village, Izium region. A 36-year-old farm worker was killed in the shelling. During the occupation, the man was abducted and tortured by the russian military, accusing him of collaborating with the Armed Forces and the documents were used in their PSYOP.

Yesterday, russian invaders attacked settlements of Kupiansk, Chuhuiv and Kharkiv regions. The shelling of Velykyi Burluk village, Kupiansk region, damaged trade pavilions at the local market and at least 7 private buildings. An administrative building, an educational institution and  public transport were damaged. A 16-year-old girl and women aged 43 and 62 were injured and hospitalised in moderate condition.

In Vovchansk, a private residential building was destroyed by artillery shelling. Rescuers saved an 88-year-old woman from the rubble. She was injured and hospitalised.

The mine danger remains high. Yesterday, a tractor exploded on an unknown explosive device near Turove village, Bohodukhiv region. There were no casualties.

Donetsk oblast

127th Brigade of the territorial defence reported that an assault group of Russian soldiers was destroyed last night in Bakhmut. Russian soldiers were spotted by aerial reconnaissance of the same brigade. An accurate artillery strike was made by soldiers of the 60th Separate Mechanised Ingulets Brigade.

Hanna Maliar, Deputy Defence Minister said on Telegram that Ukrainian troops did not leave any of their positions in Bakhmut this week, but instead advanced 2 km towards Bakhmut.

Petro Andriushchenko, Mariupol Mayor’s Councillor, noted that dolphins are massively washed ashore on the Azov Sea coast as a result of enemy environmental experiments.

Serhii Boievskyi, head of the Druzhkivka City Military Administration reported that on 12 May, in the evening, explosions occurred. Two people were injured and taken to hospital. The cause of the explosions is being investigated.

Anastasiia Miedviedieva, spokeswoman of the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office noted that one person was injured as a result of today’s shelling of Kostiantynivka. Russians hit the city with Smerch MRLs and artillery, damaging 28 private buildings, 2 apartment buildings, a shop and 2 gas pipelines. As a result of the daytime shelling of Kostiantynivka, a 78-year-old woman sustained shrapnel wounds. She was taken to hospital. According to preliminary data, the shelling was carried out from a Smerch multiple rocket launcher and cannon artillery.

In the middle of the night, russians shelled Kramatorsk community, hitting a school in Kramatorsk and a residential area in Yasnohirka.  The shelling damaged five apartment buildings, 34 private buildings, power lines, a kindergarten and several commercial objects, but there were no casualties.

Towards Volnovakha, the enemy was actively shooting at Vuhledar: they launched two missile attacks, one with kamikaze drones and made 32 artillery attacks. Four buildings were destroyed in Novoukrainka. Prechystivka was shelled with Grad MRLs.

Towards Donetsk, russians launched three missiles on Avdiivka and shelled Kurakhove with artillery.

Towards Horlivka, a building was destroyed by a direct hit and two more damaged by shock waves and debris.

Towards Lysychansk, a building was destroyed in Dibrova, Lyman community and there was shelling of Torske and Zarichne.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, head of Donetsk RMA, informed that yesterday russians killed one civilian in Sloviansk. Another 12 people were injured.

Luhansk oblast

Referring to the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, Stelmakhivka, Makiivka, Nevske and Bilohorivka were under russian attack yesterday. The enemy launched air strikes on Hrekivka and Bilohorivka. Preliminary, there were no casualties. However, russians continue to destroy the homes of Luhansk residents. For example, in Nevske, their fire recently damaged a woman’s house and destroyed outbuildings. Another house was destroyed the day before yesterday in Hrekivka, its owner survived. The security situation remains tense in every settlement. Over the past week, two women have agreed to evacuate and are now making their way to neighbouring areas. The main fighting continues in Serebrianka forestry, but the enemy is not successful there.

To increase pressure on the local population, the invaders have engaged manoeuvrable groups of Russian Guard. They are supposed to counteract representatives of the resistance movement, strengthen cooperation with russian military and collaborators, and collect and systematize the security situation.

Pressure on the local population is increasing every day. This also applies to Svatove. Previously, those who refused to give up their russian passports had 30% of their salaries deducted.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Ministry of Defense reported that thanks to the impeccable work of the air defense system, not a single enemy missile or drone reached the target in Kyiv in two months. The message noted that since February 24, 2022, 740 air alarms have been activated in Kyiv. In total, the alarms lasted 851 hours and 38 minutes.

A foreign delegation led by European Commissioner for Internal Affairs Ilvi Johansson visited the sites of russian war crimes in Irpen. The delegation visited the reconstructed district police department, which served as a shelter for civilians during the russian invasion, and also got acquainted with the work of forensic scientists, dog experts and explosives technicians near the destroyed residential complex.

Kyiv Regional Military Administration held a meeting with Etienne de Ponsin, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the French Republic to Ukraine. It was about the continuation of projects to restore damaged objects in the region. As the head of RMA Ruslan Kravchenko reported, with the support of the French government, the Neo-Eco company is already implementing a project to reconstruct the almost completely destroyed military town in the village of Hostomel.

1,885 video cameras are integrated into the “Safe Kyiv oblast” intelligent system. As the head of the National Police of the oblast, Andrii Nebitov, said, during the full-scale invasion, the russians destroyed almost 30% of the video surveillance cameras integrated into the system, but as of now, the lost number has been restored. During the occupation of Kyiv oblast, this system made it possible to track the movements of the russian federation military, now it helps in solving their crimes.

Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klychko showed foreign and Ukrainian journalists the remains of missiles and drones that russia uses to kill civilians and destroy Ukrainian cities and villages. According to him, fragments of various types of weapons are currently being studied at the Kyiv Research Institute of Forensic Examinations. The institute submits the results to the International Criminal Court, and separate groups of foreign specialists work on site together with Ukrainian experts.

The Balbek Bureau studio team reported that the pilot modular town for displaced persons RE:Ukraine Housing has begun to be built in Vorzel. In addition to the housing, which should provide the basic needs of the residents, a space for leisure and a center for interaction between IDPs and the local community will function on the territory.

KCSA reported that the first batch of six used wagons from the Warsaw Metro has arrived in the capital. The wagons will be used as “technical donors” for capital repairs of the existing rolling stock. In total, as part of the agreement, 60 decommissioned wagons are to be handed over to Kyiv free of charge.

The Department of Tourism and Promotions of the KCSA reported that ss part of the celebration of Europe Day, free tours “Kyiv – the heart of Europe” will be held in the capital over the weekend. Excursion routes are designed in accordance with the conditions of martial law, so in the event of an air alert, participants will be able to go to shelters located nearby.

Zhytomyr oblast

Zhytomyr RMA reported that 85 migrant medics from the south and east of the country are saving human lives in the oblast. These are medical workers who moved from dangerous territories occupied by the enemy together with their families, and have become an integral part of 25 local hospitals, dispensaries, primary care centers and emergency care.

For the second year in a row, residents of the Ushomyr community are participating in the all-Ukrainian project “Gardens of Victory”. As the head of the village council Lyudmila Mala reported, not only educational institutions provide with vegetables. Thanks to the project, the community helped the residents of Borodyanka, who suffered due to the war, and the military on the front lines.

Sumy oblast

Sumy RMA reported that russians carried out 17 shelling of the border with mortars, artillery and MLRS. More than 80 explosions were recorded. Settlements of Znob-Novhorodske, Esman, Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Mykolaiv, Velika Pysarivka communities were shelled. As a result of mortar shelling, a bridge on a local highway was destroyed and 2 private residential buildings were damaged in the Znob-Novhorodske community.

At night and in the morning, settlements of Myropillia and Nova Sloboda communities came under enemy shelling – 2 mortar shells (3 explosions) were recorded.

Sumy oblast will receive generators for the needs of communal non-commercial enterprises in the medical field. The assistance was made possible thanks to the USAID project “Health Care Reform Support”. In total, 60 generators were delivered to Ukraine for the needs of regional clinical hospitals, primary health care centers, treatment and diagnostic centers, and emergency medical care centers of Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, and Sumy regions.

The Sumy Regional Hospital for Veterans received modern equipment thanks to the Mondelēz International Foundation and the Blagomai Charitable Foundation. The benefactors handed the hospital a modern digital x-ray system and other medical equipment worth about UAH 7 million.

UNDP and the EU announce the recruitment of Sumy oblast entrepreneurs for business skills development training for the war-affected population of Ukraine. As reported in RMA, participants of the Program can become: everyone who lost their job during the war and plans to start their own business; entrepreneurs who want to restore their business or intend to expand it; internally displaced persons. 

Chernihiv oblast

The ‘North’ Operational Command reported that two local women were injured due to a russian air attack – a FAB-500 guided aerial bomb hit the village of Arkhipivka in the Semenivka hromada. Three residential buildings were also destroyed by the fire.

In total, five shellings from various types of weapons were recorded in Chernihiv oblast over the past day – 9 explosions from enemy airstrikes, 2 explosions from 120 mm caliber mines, 15 explosions from artillery shells. As reported in the SBGS, the border settlements of Krasnyi Khutir, Halahanivka, Leonivka, Muravyi, Arkhipivka came under enemy shelling.

The VRU Committee on Youth and Sports will initiate the allocation of UAH 300 million for the reconstruction of the region’s sports infrastructure. Vyacheslav Chaus, head of Chernihiv RMA, reported that 12 sports facilities in the oblast were destroyed or partially damaged due to russian shelling and bombing. In particular, two Olympic training bases of state importance (biathlon and weightlifting) were completely destroyed.

Two minor children were evacuated from the village of Buda-Vorob’ivska, Novhorod-Siverskyi region, which suffers from constant russian shelling. As reported by the regional police, 6-year-old Kira and 5-year-old David together with their guardian were taken to Ichnia, where they found shelter.

The Ministry of Energy reported that energetics of Chernihiv oblast received from partners almost 260 tons of equipment and consumables for restoration and modernization of energy facilities. Thanks to partner assistance, a number of transformer substations destroyed or significantly damaged by the occupiers were replaced in Chernihiv, and a modular town was established for people who lost their homes.

Chernihiv oblast will receive generators for medical institutions with the help of USAID as part of the project “Support for health care reform”, as well as 31 diesel generators for Chernihiv schools.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

 As a result of the shelling of the Myrove community on May, 11,  in the Nikopol region, an outbuilding was destroyed, 7 damaged, a medical facility, an administrative building, and 11 private houses were damaged. A minibus, a car, gas pipelines, and power grids were also damaged. During the night, the occupiers shelled the area four times with heavy artillery.  They hit the Chervonohryhorivka and Marhanets communities and the city of  Nikopol.

According to the head of the regional council Mykola Lukashuk, the russians shelled the Nikopol region three times with heavy artillery during the day. They hit Nikopol and the Marhanets community. A 29-year-old man was injured. A 71-year-old woman was rescued. In Nikopol, enemy shells destroyed 3 private houses and an outbuilding. The shelling also damaged a church, a warehouse building, a shop, 7 private households and outbuildings, two cars, gas pipelines, and power lines.

The soldier underwent surgery in a Dnipro hospital, for which doctors stopped his heart for 15 minutes to remove a fragment from a shell. He is now conscious in the intensive care unit. The soldier will be able to return to normal life in 2-3 months.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​Vinnytsia City Council reported that Kira Korol from Vinnytsia raised funds for an off-road vehicle for the military. The car was sent straight to the frontline from the school playground of Vinnytsia Lyceum No. 4. 

According to the Interregional Humanitarian Coordination Centre, more than 4 tonnes of medical supplies are on their way to Vinnytsia benefactors from the Podilska Hromada (Podillia Community) foundation. The cargo was collected by the French non-profit association Le Hangar d’AIMA Castetnau-Camblong. The shipment includes electric medical beds, electric chairs, medical trolleys, and medical supplies.

Kirovohrad oblast

Schoolchildren in Kropyvnytskyi held “The Way Home” campaign to support prisoners of war. The participants were students in grades 4-7.

In Kirovohrad region, with the support of the Coca-Cola Foundation and the National Committee of Red Cross, 3 generators and 600 bedding sets were delivered to places of compact residence of internally displaced persons.

Poltava oblast

The American Foundation for Assistance to Ukraine has delivered various types of medical supplies to Poltava. This aid was sent to Poltava Regional Clinical Hospital.

Cherkasy oblast

Cherkasy and the German city of Bielefeld have officially become sister cities. The mayor of Cherkasy, who is on a business trip to Germany, signed an agreement with the mayor of Bielefeld, Pete Clausen.

The new equipment, including thermal imagers, radios, generators and batteries, was delivered to the 118th separate territorial defence brigade from Cherkasy region. The Cherkasy Regional Development Agency, local communities and the staff of Cherkasy State Technological University joined in the collection of the cargo.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Yesterday, the enemy shelled Zaporizhzhia oblast 95 times, launching 87 artillery strikes, three attacks with UAVs, two aviation attacks, two with MLRS, and one missile strike. 24 cities and villages in the region were affected, namely Zaporizhzhia, Omelnyk, Chervone, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka, Novoselivka, Olhivske, Tavriiske, Huliaipole, Orikhiv, Zaliznychne, Novoandriivka, Huliaipilske, Malynivka, Bilohiria, Zatyshshia, Scherbaky, Novoselivka, Novopavlivka, Stepnohirsk, Kamianske, Stepove, Mali Shcherbaky, Pavlivka. The police received 88 reports on the destruction of buildings (apartments) of citizens and infrastructure facilities.

The enemy cannot provide normal living conditions for the Ukrainian population in the temporarily occupied territories: people suffer not only from constant pressure but also from a humanitarian catastrophe. This was reported by the head of the Zaporizhzhia RMA, Yurii Malashko. Also, according to him, the occupiers, under the guise of evacuating civilians, are fleeing from the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, taking documentation and looting the city.

Energoatom is preparing personnel who will work at the Zaporizhzhia NPP immediately after de-occupation. According to the President of NNEGC Energoatom, Petro Kotin, there are now 6,000-6,500 station employees left in Enerhodar, of which 2,700 have signed a contract with Rosatom. 3,000-3,500 people who receive salaries from Ukraine will be able to enter and operate the station after de-occupation.

Mykolaiv oblast

On the evening of May 11, russian aggressors shelled the Kutsurub community in Mykolaiv oblast. In the morning of May 12, they also attacked the waters of the Ochakiv community, damaging residential buildings. According to the Mykolaiv RMA, there were no casualties.

The photo exhibition “Unconquered South”, which showcases photos of border guards and their daily struggles, their stories and paths that lead our country to victory, was launched in Odesa yesterday. It features 33 thematic photographs united by the common goal of documenting the heroic struggle of our military for peace and a prosperous future for Ukraine. Some of the photos were taken on mobile phones by border guards participating in combat operations, war correspondents and press officers, as well as by the well-known Odesa photographer Borys Bukhman.

Odesa oblast

The likelihood of enemy missile strikes and the use of kamikaze drones remains high for Odesa oblast. Moreover, military personnel have recently detected the activity of unmanned reconnaissance vehicles over the territorial sea. According to the “South” Operational Command, as of yesterday evening, there were ten enemy ships on combat duty in the Black Sea, including two surface-to-surface missile carriers with total salvo up to 16 Kalibers.

Volunteers from the civic organization “Unbreakable Workshop” created a combat buggy from a 1971 soviet car. According to the volunteers, the buggy will go to the Ukrainian Navy’s Maritime Security Service unit and will be used to shoot down drones.

Odesa producer of frozen semi-finished products, “Levada,” helped soldiers defending Ukraine remember the taste of home-cooked food. They made almost 700 kg of varenyky, dumplings, and cheese and meat pancakes and brought everything to the military unit.

A mobile shelter that can accommodate up to 25 people was made in Odesa and delivered to Kherson. The shelter weighs 35 tons and has everything necessary to wait out an alarm. It took 21 days to build such a shelter.

Kherson oblast

Today, the russian army shelled residential areas in Beryslav region. As a result of the drone attack with Frangible bullets, a resident of the village of Odradokamianka was injured. The russian military also shelled the outskirts and residential areas of the Novovorontsovka territorial community with artillery. Critical infrastructure object has been damaged in Osokorivka due to the artillery strikes.

In Kakhovka region two women were killed in a private house due to a precise hit by an enemy shell, and another local resident was hospitalized with injuries. A woman was also injured in the Dariivka community due to shelling. The russian army targeted the roof of a multi-story building  in the regional center. Houses, farm buildings, the village council building, and a car were damaged due to the ene,y shellings.

At night, enemy aircraft dropped two guided bombs on Kizomys. Due to the enemy attack, two residential buildings were completely destroyed, while eight more houses and an administrative building were damaged.

On May 11, the russian occupiers shelled peaceful settlements in Kherson oblast 80 times, firing 339 shells from artillery, multiple rocket launchers, mortars, tanks, drones, and aircraft. The enemy attacked Kherson four times, firing 12 shells at the city. The occupiers’ shells hit a school in the historical center of Kherson, which is the oldest in the city. A fire broke out inside the building, and the gymnasium was almost completely destroyed. One person was killed, and four others were injured as a result of enemy shelling in Kherson oblast.

A 49-year-old man was killed in the field near the village of Blahodatne in the Chornobaivka community as a result of the  ammunition explosion. Overall, the police opened 18 criminal proceedings in the past day. 

The “South” Operational Command reported the destruction of 2 reconnaissance UAVs “Orlan-10” in Mykolaiv and Kherson oblasts, respectively. The total confirmed enemy losses for the past day are: 54 occupiers, 2 “Tiger” armored vehicles, 82-mm mortar, 3 military trucks, a UAV control center, and a set of radio electronic warfare station antennas.

Yesterday, energy workers partially restored electricity supply in Stepove and Brusynske. This is another 86 consumers who were connected to the network. 39 brigades worked To restore power in Kherson oblast – these are 174 workers and 66 units of equipment.

Residents of Kherson oblast are receiving humanitarian aid from charity organizations. Volunteers delivered family kits with necessary goods to the residents of Myroliubivka, Myrne, Parysheve, Molodetske, and Hrozove. They also delivered a generator for Kherson oblast.
