War in Ukraine today: latest news, March 12, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 382th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The enemy negates their losses as they strive to achieve the goals. The invaders focus on offensive operations towards Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, Mariinka, and Shakhtarsk.

The russian federation continues to use terror by shelling settlements in violation of the rules of International Humanitarian Law.

The enemy launched 1 missile attack on a civilian infrastructure facility in Slovians, Donetsk oblast. The enemy also launched 4 air strikes and around 20 MLRS attacks.

Ukraine is still under the threat of missile attacks.

Towards Volyn, Polissia, Siversk, and Sloboda, there were no significant changes. No formation of enemy offensive groups were detected. Invaders are erecting defensive constructions in the border areas of Belgorod oblast. The enemy shelled the vicinities of settlements of Volfyne, Sumy oblast, Strilecha, Krasne, Velykyi Burluk, and Bolohivka, Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk and Lyman, the enemy attempts to break through the defense of Ukrainian troops. The enemy conducted unsuccessful offensive towards Dvorichna, Dibrova, and Serebrianke forestry. The invaders fired artillery at the vicinities of settlements of Dvorichna, Zapadne, Kupiansk, Krokhmalne, Cherneschyna, Kharkiv oblast, Makiivka, Nevske, Dibrova, Bilohorivka, Luhansk oblast, Siversk, and Spirne, Donetsk oblast.

The enemy is assaulting the city of Bakhmut. Ukrainian defenders repelled attacks in the vicinity of settlements of Minkivka and Orikhovo-Vasylivka. Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Bohdanivka, Bakhmut, Chasiv Yar, Kurdiumivka, Druzhba, Maiorsk, and New York, Donetsk oblast came under enemy fire.

Towards Avdiivka, Mariinka, and Shakhtars, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensive operations towards the settlements of Krasnohorivka, Kamianka, Sieverne, Nevelske, Mariinka, Pobieda, and Vuhledar, Donetsk oblast.

Berdychi, Avdiivka, Tonenke, Vodiane, Heorhiivka, Nevelske, Hostre, Pobieda, Vuhledar, Vremivka, and Neskuchne, Donetsk oblast were shelled.

Towards Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, the enemy is on the defensive. Olhivske, Malynivka, Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka, Zaporizhzhia oblast, Beryslav, Bilozerka, Kherson oblast, Tamaryne, and Ochakiv, Mykolaiv oblast were shelled by the enemy.

The russian occupiers are looting certain settlements of the temporarily occupied Kherson oblast. They are trying to sell looted gadgets and household appliances to civilians in other settlements.

The enemy continues to suffer losses. On March 11, about 30 bodies of the occupiers were delivered to a local morgue in Enerhodar. The russian military leadership is taking measures to replenish the casualties. Thus, new troops from  Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous district arrived in Yalta, Donetsk oblast on March 10. The enemy personnel is reportedly low-motivated and unwilling to participate in combat operations.

Ukrainian Air Forces launched 1 air strike at the enemy’s anti-aircraft missile system and 6 air strikes at buildups of its personnel and military equipment.

The Ukrainian rocket troops and artillery units hit 1 command post, 2 concentrations of personnel and military equipment of the enemy and 1 ammunition depot.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ihor Klymenko, In total russia launched 40.5 thousand strikes. Over 152K civilians homes and 60K general infrastructure facilities were damaged. He also noted that 66300 criminal proceedings were registered on russian military war crimes.  

According to the spokesperson of the “South” Operational Command Nataliia Humeniuk, russia wanted to check whether Ukraine really has Patriot SAM systems, this is why they launched kamikaze drones to detect air defense systems, then they struck by using various missile types, including Kindzhal. 

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, russian troops maintain a significant military presence towards Kupiansk to prevent redeployment of Ukrainian units to other areas. The invaders attacked at least nine settlements. The General Staff notes that russians continue equipping their positions in the border areas of Belgorod region.

Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that in the afternoon, russia shelled the private sector in Zapadne village of Dvorichna community.

In Kharkiv, the heating system was restarted for the eighth time. Mayor Ihor Terekhov said that this is unprecedented for Ukraine.

The enemy continues to shell the settlements of Chuhuiv, Kharkiv and Kupiansk regions near the front line and the border with russia. Specifically, Chervona Zoria, Dvorichna, Hrianykivka, Krasne, Novomlynsk, Ohirtseve, Zapadne and other settlements were under mortar and artillery attack yesterday.

Hostile shelling damaged private buildings and outbuildings in Zapadne village. There were no civilian casualties yesterday.

Humanitarian de-mining works are ongoing. Yesterday pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service examined almost 3 hectares of the territory and defused 42 explosive ordnance.

Donetsk oblast

Vadym Liakh, head of the Sloviansk City Military Administration, reported that russian occupation forces shelled Sloviansk during the day. The shelling damaged a railway track and a power line. 

The press service of the Donetsk police informed that russian invaders launched five air strikes on Ocheretyne community. They struck Lyman with S-300 air defense systems.

Russian troops also fired on Bakhmut, Kostiantynivka, Kurakhove and Vremivka, Ivanopillia, Karlivka, Lastochkyne, Maksymilianivka, Mykolaivka, Sieverne and Khromove. The shelling destroyed and damaged 41 civilian targets, including 27 residential buildings, shops, a factory workshop, a warehouse, a railway track, power lines, a garage and vehicles.

The Military Media Center under the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine said that the defense of Bakhmut allows the invaders to concentrate a large number of troops in one direction. Due to  heavy losses towards Bakhmut, Lyman and Mariinka, russians cannot launch an offensive in other directions.

The USAID Economic Support for Ukraine Project (USAID Project) has purchased IT equipment for the Donetsk Regional Employment Center (DEC), 50 laptops, 50 headphones and software.

Petro Andriushchenko, Mariupol Mayor’s Councillor, noted that Ukrainian radio has been launched in the temporarily occupied Mariupol. It can be found by simply searching for frequencies. Ukrainians are asked to pass this information to their relatives who remained in the occupied city.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, said that yesterday russians killed two people and injured at least three .

Press center of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported on its media resources that for half a day, russians stormed a stronghold held by border guards in Bakhmut with the support of cannon and rocket artillery. Our defenders stopped the enemy with grenade launchers and small arms. At the same time, in other parts of the frontline in Donetsk oblast, border guards repelled enemy attacks on two more strongholds. This time, the assault groups, detected by unmanned aerial vehicles in advance, were eliminated with mortars. In total, the border guards eliminated 9 and injured 12 invaders. 

Referring to the press service of law enforcers, police helped to evacuate 176 people from Donetsk oblast.

According to Oleksii Danylov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, collaborators, who collaborated with russians, began to massively leave the occupied part of Donbas for russia.

Luhansk oblast

Yesterday, the invaders tried to break through the defense of our troops by shelling settlements along the frontline, but had no success. Specifically, Bilohorivka, Dibrova, Kuzmyne, Nevske, Novoselivske and Stelmakhivka were targeted.

Serhii Haidai, head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, said that the situation at the front is difficult but stable in all three sectors in Luhansk oblast. In Kreminna, the invaders sent new T-90 tanks into the battle, but after two weeks they ran out of them. Now, the invaders are on the offensive with T-72s. The enemy has many more drones.

Based on the information provided by the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, there is forced mobilisation. Russians will not pay money without a russian passport. Women from the occupied territory demand to return their husbands from the front based on their age. After more than two weeks the invaders noticed flooding of Borivske.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, central heating system has been fully restored in Kyiv after russian missile attack. Heat-generating equipment runs at optimal parameters. Power and water supply in the capital are operating as usual.

The conference ‘A Year of Invincibility. United to Victory’, dedicated to the anniversary of the full-scale russian invasion and de-occupation of the oblast, was recently held in Kyiv oblast. Representatives of diplomatic missions, international humanitarian organizations, law enforcement agencies and community leaders attended the event. During the conference, projects to rebuild Kyiv oblast were introduced and restoration results together with international partners were shown.

The regional military administration reported that more than 60,000 people have visited the Invincibility Centers in Kyiv oblast since their opening. Local governments have opened 294 centres in the oblast, with almost UAH 19 million allocated from the local budget to equip them.

According to the SES, 20 ‘Safety Classrooms’ are already running in the educational institutions of the oblast. The classrooms are equipped with necessary materials and equipment, where children learn fire and mine safety, as well as evacuation drills in case of an air raid alert or other emergencies.

According to the National Guard, being able to keep calm and provide first aid are the most crucial skills that every Ukrainian should master. Therefore, representatives of the civil-military cooperation department teach Kyiv students mine safety and first aid drills.

Presentation of the short research film ‘russian Air Strike on Mariupol Drama Theatre’ was announced in Kyiv. The Centre for Spatial Technologies in cooperation with London-based Forensis explores the history of the theater, its transformation into a shelter during the full-scale war, the russian attack and the obliteration of its memory. The team has collected thousands of photos, videos and social media posts and recorded more than 100 hours of interviews with witnesses.

A bookstore located at 6, Velyka Vasylkivska Street, Kyiv, has announced a book donations initiative intended for defenders undergoing treatment in military hospitals. Kyiv residents can participate in this initiative and bring books in Ukrainian to the bookstore until 31 March.

Zhytomyr oblast

Funds will be allocated from the community budget to construct 50 apartments for servicemen in Zviahel. This decision was made by the deputies at the session of the city council. The initiative is to be implemented in 2023, so that 50 families of the Armed Forces soldiers will receive their own homes.

The next stage of the restoration of the bridge over the Trostianytsia River has started in Zhytomyr oblast. During active hostilities, this bridge was blown up to stop the advance of russian troops. As part of the bridge overhaul near the village of Toporyshche, seven 28-metre beams are being installed. This man-made structure connects one of key international transport arteries of the oblast.

Exhibition of French documentary filmmaker and photographer Jacqui Leba was launched in Zhytomyr. The exhibition titled ‘Ukraine through the Eyes of a Frenchman’ features 35 photographs where Jacqui captured moments of Ukrainian life in different cities after 24 February 2022. Jacqui moved to Zhytomyr more than four years ago and was in Ukraine at the beginning of the full-scale war. The artist has already exhibited his collection of photographs in Belgium, France, Canada and other countries.

Over a month, a volunteer organization from Malyn, Team-M, has produced and sent about a thousand sets of vacuum-sealed meals to the frontline. According to them, since the first days of the war, they have been delivering ready-made food in trays to the military, but the shelf life of vacuum-sealed meals is much longer. The volunteer center also produces instant soup packages for the military.

Sumy oblast

The Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that russians shelled the territories of Bilopillia and Velyka Pysarivka communities. In total, there were 11 incoming shells and 7 machine-gun bursts. According to the State Border Guard, Seredyna-Buda community suffered from artillery shelling resulting in 25 explosions. As a result of russian shelling, two private houses, a balcony of an apartment in a multi-storey building and a power cable were damaged. Regional police units register crimes committed by russian military.

The mayor of Sumy, Oleksandr Lysenko, reported that for now, there are no plans to restore street lighting on all streets in Sumy or remove roadblocks at the entrance to the city. These decisions were made for security reasons and agreed with the military.

The SES report that 6 additional ‘Safety Classrooms’ were opened in Sumy oblast. The new classroom was opened in Romny secondary school #7, where the Rescue Service delivered a special lesson for children.

Chernihiv oblast

The enemy continues shelling Chernihiv oblast. According to the SES, two explosive charges were dropped from an enemy UAV and a 120-mm mortar bomb exploded on the border of Semenivka community yesterday.

Commemoration service for eight territorial defense soldiers killed at the Gagarin Stadium as a result of the russian bombing on 11 March 2022 took place in Chernihiv. Brothers in arms and relatives of the victims built a memorial stele amidst the concrete rubble of the stadium, laid fresh flowers and flags. On that day, russian planes dropped eight bombs on the defenders of Chernihiv.

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

In the center of Dnipro, a schoolboy plays patriotic songs on the violin. He transfers the proceeds to help the defenders of Ukraine.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​In Vinnytsia, the Thanksgiving Day for the Armed Forces was held for the first time. According to estimates, more than half a hundred people gathered at Veteran Hub. The event was hosted for servicemen who were injured and are being treated in the city and those who are here on rotation. Military chaplains brought video greetings from the front line, from soldiers and commanders. Students handed over drawings and bracelets.

​​​​In Vinnytsia, servicemen built a church, began painting it and embroidered icons on the territory of the military unit.

Kirovohrad oblast

Kropyvnytskyi rescuers visited the mobile point “Together” of the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF in the Kirovohrad Regional Center for Children’s and Youth Creativity. Children were taught the rules of fire safety at home.

Poltava oblast

The press service of the State Emergency Service of the Poltava region reported that four-day courses for rescuers who will be operators, and external pilots of unmanned aerial vehicles have ended. The representatives of the Poltava air reconnaissance center “SvaroH” trained employees of the Main Directorate and subordinate units.

Cherkasy oblast

Servicemen of the 93rd Mechanized Brigade “Kholodnyi Yar” not only eliminate the russian invaders, but also help create families. They delivered their comrade on a tank to Cherkasy, where he married his beloved one.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration reported that yesterday the enemy attacked the positions of Ukrainian defenders, using tanks, rocket and cannon artillery along the entire front line, 134 times.

The artillery of the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed russian Buk rocket launcher. The artillery of the 44th separate artillery brigade of the Hetman Danylo Apostol of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, operating in the Zaporizhzhia sector, made accurate strikes.

As a result of the shelling of Zaporizhzhia yesterday afternoon, the territory and premises of an industrial facility were destroyed and a gas pipeline was damaged. The invaders had previously used two S-300 anti-aircraft missile system.

Yesterday in village of Zaporizhzhia region, two children, about 10 and 3 years old, brought home an unknown object they found on the street. The boys continued to play with the cylindrical object, when the munition detonated. The children were injured and are currently hospitalised.

The Centre for Strategic Communications and Information Security said that russians have launched a fake news story that Ukraine has allegedly abandoned the idea of creating a protective zone around the Zaporizhzhia NPP. The propagandists say that Ukraine “is not ready to fulfill the IAEA initiative, which would exclude attacks from and against the power plant.” In fact, it is Ukraine that supports all efforts of the international community to demilitarise the seized Zaporizhzhia NPP and russia does not stop systematically shelling the nuclear facility.

Wagner PMC is recruiting Melitopol residents to storm Bakhmut. Recently, an advertisement appeared in russian telegram channels in Melitopol: Wagner PMC encouraged everyone to join their ranks and go to Bakhmut. Volunteers were allured with a salary of 250K rubles per month and a full “social package”.

Mykolaiv oblast

Last night, rescuers extinguished two fires in Ochakiv that were caused by russian shelling. Cars and a residential building were on fire. A total of 14 rescuers and two special vehicles were engaged in the firefighting.

Yesterday, pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service made 19 visits to identify explosive ordnance and removed 116 dangerous objects.

Mykolaiv. Hero City exhibition of artworks by Yuliia Polishchuk, graphic designer and illustrator, opened in the House of Naval Officers in Mykolaiv. The exhibition includes 29 illustrations. All of them are united by a common topic of life in wartime.

Odesa oblast

The Odesa Regional Territorial Centre for Recruitment and Social Support has announced the recruitment of patriotic and motivated citizens, defenders of Ukraine, to form a new rifle battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Citizens of Ukraine, liable for military service aged 18 to 60, and are on the military register, internally displaced persons or temporarily residing in Odesa oblast can join the ranks of the rifle battalion. The center noted that the campaign is aimed exclusively at motivated people who voluntarily enlist in the Armed Forces of Ukraine to defend Odesa oblast from the invaders. The Black Sea Sich separate rifle battalion is expected to recruit about 600 people.

In Odesa, a mural dedicated to the Hero shot by russian invaders has appeared on Serednofontanska Street. The artist LBWS painted a portrait of the defender on the background of the national flag.

Today, volunteers of Izmail for the Armed Forces of Ukraine movement, organised by Alona Kolesnik, and the creative team of the Regional Centre for National Cultures in Izmail held a charity concert and fair. The funds raised will be used to purchase a powerful professional drone with a wide-angle camera and a DJI Mavic 3T thermal imager for the 88th Separate Marine Battalion.

Kherson oblast

Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that yesterday the invaders attacked 29 times, launching 156 shells from heavy artillery and Grad MRLs. Kherson city was shelled 3 times. 10 shells hit residential areas, private and apartment buildings. There were also hits at the territory of a utility company. There were casualties among civilians: three people were killed and three injured.

Russians shelled Kherson for the second time at the same bus stop on Korabelna Square. First hit killed three people. After some time, rescuers, military, medics and journalists arrived there and at this time the second shelling began. Fortunately, no one was injured in the second shelling, but it was clear that this was a russian tactic.

Near Ischenka village, a car with four civilians exploded on a mine left by the invaders in a field. As a result, two people were killed and two others hospitalized with injuries of varying degrees.

In Kherson oblast, russians are looting. The invaders are trying to sell the looted “gadgets” and household appliances to civilians in other settlements.

The polar explorers added Kherson to the road sign near the Akademik Vernadskyi station. The road sign has not been updated for the last twenty years. Therefore, the polar explorers decided to restore it both physically and content-wise. For the first time, they also added Mariupol and Bucha, Kolomyia and Ivano-Frankivsk, New York, Ottawa and the capitals of other countries that support Ukraine.

The free evacuation train runs daily from Kherson to Lviv. The train departs from Kherson at 2:27 pm. It arrives in Lviv the next day at 10:18 am and runs through the stations of Mykolaiv, Shevchenko, Bila Tserkva, Vinnytsia, Khmelnytskyi and Ternopil.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

At the pottery school Oseredok (Lypyny village), servicemen are rehabilitated with the help of clay therapy. The workshops are attended by fighters rehabilitating in the oblast’s medical facilities and being treated after injuries or wounds in the war.

Zakarpattia oblast

IDPs of Uzhhorod received 300 food kits and 80 bags with necessary stuff for children under 2 years old from the NGO “Quality of Life Foundation”. The humanitarian aid was provided in partnership with PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e.V., JustAnswer, RespekTiere and Eduard Burash, adviser to the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic on Ukrainian issues.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Invincibility Centers of Kosiv region received 28 generators from international donors with the assistance of the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development.

Lviv oblast

Maksym Kozytskyi, head of the Lviv RMA, claimed that since the war began the oblast received various aid from charitable organizations in the amount of EUR 70 million.

8 patients from Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk oblasts were evacuated by special train to Lviv oblast. Medics assess the condition of people as medium to severe. They are provided with all necessary help in one of the medical institutions of the oblast.

The RMA reported that over 200 IDPs shelters in the oblast received humanitarian aid from advisory and coordination centers.

The city of Sokal received a truck and four bags of humanitarian aid, including hygiene products, food and clothing, from volunteers in German cities of Dessau-Rosslau and Dresden.

200 IDPs living in the Sambir community received humanitarian aid, namely mattresses, blankets, towels, flashlights, thermoses and hygiene products, from the Right to Protection Foundation.

In the village of Dobrosyn, an Invincibility Center has opened thanks to the CORE CF and the SpivDiia volunteer platform. The Center was provided with Internet, backup power, products and household items in case of a critical situation.

Rivne oblast

In Rivne oblast, the 20th class of security was opened at the Demydiv Lyceum. The classroom is divided into several learning zones and equipped with mock-ups of explosive objects, first aid and fire safety equipment.

There was a report about mining of all shopping malls in Rivne. All relevant services were working at the place of possible mining. Explosive substances were not detected in all mines.

The Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that vaccination of IDPs by mobile teams continues in Rivne oblast.

Ternopil oblast

Comprehensive programs “Children of Heroes of Ternopil” and “Families of Heroes of Ternopil” were introduced in Ternopil. Every family of Ternopil Heroes and IDPs living in Ternopil will be under the care of the community.

In Ternopil oblast, soldiers of the “Offensive Guard” are being trained. The personnel training of the eight new “Offensive Guard” brigades will last from 2 to 4 months.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The RMA reported that IDPs of the oblast received 1K blankets from UNICEF.

The RMA reported that the Netish community connected two automatic sirens to the regional warning system for UAH 55.9K.

The RMA reported that extraction of 200 m3 of timber for the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the equipment of defense lines in Luhansk oblast has been ensured.

Chernivtsi oblast

Roman Klichuk, Mayor of Chernivtsi, during his visit to Dusseldorf, held several meetings related to economic cooperation. They discussed the possibilities of developing economic ties with Chernivtsi and cooperation with sister city companies.

Metal prefabricated structures for temporary bridges will arrive in Chernivtsi oblast in the near future from Norway.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Volodymyr Zelensky held a phone conversation with Petr Pavel, President of the Czech Republic. Support for Ukraine was discussed.

Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, held a phone conversation with General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US. Defense needs of Ukraine were discussed.

Rishi Sunak, British Prime Minister is flying to the US to discuss countering China with Joe Biden and Anthony Albanese, Australian Prime Minister.

Yurii Ihnat, spokesman of the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reported that Ukraine will receive from Western partners air defense systems capable of shooting down not only ballistic missiles, but also enemy aircraft at a distance of 150 km.

Kersti Kaljulaid, ex-president of Estonia, called for Ukraine to receive fighter jets. “I understand Ukraine’s impatience. For Ukraine, time is not measured in hours, but in human lives,” she added.

Georgian UFC fighter Merab Dvalishvili defeated russian Petro Yan and after the fight called to stop russia’s war against Ukraine. “Glory to Ukraine, glory to Georgia, glory to freedom! We only need freedom! No war! Please stop the war!” Dvalishvili shouted.
