War in Ukraine today: latest news, March 10, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 380th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

Russian aggressors carried out 23 air strikes and 4 missile attacks on Kostiantynivka and Sloviansk, Donetsk oblast. Civilians were injured and civilian infrastructure and residential buildings have been damaged. The occupiers also launched 23 MLRS attacks.

Ukraine is still under the threat of missile strikes. 

The enemy is trying to cross the administrative border of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Key efforts are focused on conducting offensive operations towards Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, Mariinka, and Shakhtarsk.

Towards Volyn, Polissia, Siversk, and Sloboda, the operational situation has not changed significantly. The enemy carried out mortar and artillery shelling of Yelina settlements of Chernihiv oblast; Znob-Novhorodske, Seredyna-Buda, and Atynske of Sumy oblast and Ambarne, Kamianka, Novomlynsk, Dvorichna, and Zapadne of Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Lyman, the enemy is trying to break through the defense of our troops. Artillery shelling was recorded near Hrianikyvka, Kislivka, Krokhmalne, and Berestove, Kharkiv oblast; Chervonopivka and Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, as well as Dibrova, Spirne, Rozdolivka, and Yahidne, Donetsk oblast.

The enemy is assaulting the city of Bakhmut. Ukrainian defenders repelled numerous attacks in the areas of the settlements of Ivanovske and Bakhmut. Vasiukivka, Zaliznianske, Bakhmut, Ivanovske, Bohdanivka, Hryhorivka, Bila Hora, Druzhba, and Zalizne, Donetsk region came under enemy fire.

Towards Avdiivka, Mariinka, and Shakhtarsk, the enemy carried out unsuccessful offensive actions in the directions of Kamianka, Avdiivka, Severny, Vodiane, Pervomaiske, Nevelsky, Krasnohorivka, Mariinka, and Novomykhailivka, Donetsk region. The areas of Krasnohorivka, Kamianka, Avdiivka, Vodiane, Mariinka, Heorhiivka, Novomykhailivka and Vuledar were hit by enemy shelling. Russian occupiers dropped non-lethal aerosol grenades of the K-51 type in the area of Severne, Vodiane, and Nevelske.

Towards Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, the enemy is on the defensive. The areas of Malynivka, Huliaipole, Bilohiria, Mala Tokmachka, Huliaipole, Kamianske, and Zaporizhzhia, Zaporizhzhia oblast, as well as Havrylivka, Dudchany, Kherson, Beryslav, Vesele, Antonivka, Berehove and Veletenske, Kherson oblast, were shelled.

In the settlements of Yasynuvata, Zhdanivka, Khartsyzk, and Amvrosiivka of the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk region, in local occupation administrations and houses of culture, the russian occupation so-called “authority” issues and hands over  party tickets of the political party “United russia” to local collaborators.

The enemy continues to suffer losses. In the city of Berdiansk, Zaporizhzhia oblast, as a result of fire damage by enemy units, local medical facilities are overcrowded with wounded russian occupiers. All female patients were discharged from the gynecological ward and 30 wounded russians were admitted. 80 seriously wounded invaders were placed in the surgical and ENT departments.

The Air Force of the Defense Forces made 5 strikes on the areas of concentration of personnel and military equipment of the occupiers and 1 strike on the position of the enemy’s anti-aircraft missile complex. 

Units of rocket troops and artillery hit 3 areas of concentration of enemy personnel. 

Dmytro Lubinets, human rights commissioner of the Verkhovna rada of Ukraine, said that russia doesn’t agree to exchange prisoners in “all for all” format. “To exchange all Ukrainian prisoners for all russian prisoners is constantly discussed with russians. We are trying to find options and arguments daily. Russia doesn’t agree to them. If this exchange depended on the Ukrainian side, we would do this. One of the initiatives was to exchange all female prisoners or wounded for the same prisoners on their side”, Lubinets noted. 

According to the spokesman of the Air Defense Forces of Ukraine, russia launched about 20 Kindzhal aero-ballistic missiles. He also added that based on the intelligence data russia has over 50 such missiles.

Kharkiv oblast

The General Staff of Ukraine reports that nine settlements were attacked towards Kupiansk and Sloboda. The enemy makes attempts to improve its tactical position. They shelled Novomlynska, Dvorichna, Hrianykivka, Zapadne, Kyslivka, Krokhmalne, Berestove. The enemy also fired from mortars and artillery at Ambarne, Kamianka, Novomlynsk, Dvorichna and Zapadne. 

According to head of Kharkiv RMA, Oleh Syniehubov, the russian invaders are firing at border areas. They damaged the socio-psychological rehabilitation center for kids and school. They did not have any success. The defensive capabilities of the region are being improved daily.

Based on Kharkiv regional administration data, 336 out of 561 kids deported to russia from the region were returned home. 

Mother of the deceased soldier Roman Dudnyk received the 3rd degree order “For Bravery”, Valkiv council reported. According to the President’s Decree No.357/2022, Roman was posthumously awarded for his bravery and dedication to protect sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and loyalty to military service.

Volodymyr Skichko, spokesman of Kharkivoblenergo,  informs that the whole region, except Vovchansk, Zolochiv and partially Derhachi communities, was re-connected to power.

The ecological impact of the war on the region was estimated at 200 billion $, city mayor Ihot Terekhov says. According to him, as a result of building destruction, lots of construction debris have accumulated. 

Water level at Pechenihy reservoir is 1.64 lower than possible. Krasnopavlivske reservoir which is one of key water supply sources to Kharkiv is 37% full of the total level. 

Donetsk oblast

Kostiantynivka was again under the russian attack. 8 people were affected, civilian homes and gase pipeline were damaged. According to preliminary data. This time russians used Uragan MLRS. 

Yesterday, russian troops shelled Donetsk region from Aviation, Grad MLRS, mortar and tanks 41rmes. Russian occupiers hit Bakhmut with MRLS where 8 multi-storey buildings and oe house were destroyed. Avdiivka withstood 6 air strikes. Russian occupiers attached the city 17 times. The social infrastructure facilities were damaged.  

One of Karlivka filtration station pumps was stopped due to shelling. Locals of Myrnohrad, Pokrov, Selydivka, Hordivka and Ocheretyne communities, 130 thousand people in total, were left without water supply.

Towards Volnivakha, Vuhledar and Prechystivka were attacked. There were no casualties. 

Towards Donetsk, one person was killed in the village of Vovchenka, Kurakhove community. There were no casualties in Dachne. In Mariinka community, Mariinka, Novomykhailivka and Pobieda were attacked. Sievierne. Tonenke and Lastochkine, Ocheretyne community, were shelled. 

Towards Horlivka, one person was wounded following shelling of Kostiantynivka. The city was struck with missiles and artillery. A part of the State Emergency Service premises, 2 civilian homes, bookstore and a shop were damaged. In Toretsk, a multi-storey building was damaged. Minkivka, Fedorivka, Rozdolivka, Vasiukivka, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Soledar community, were shelled. 

Towards Lysychansk, there were 10 missile attacks on Torske and Zarichne. 1 house was damaged in Siversk.

The border guards brought down Orlan-10 UAV in the vicinity of Bakhmut and liquidated 24 russian soldiers in the city. 

According to Mariupol city advisor Petro Andriuschenko, there were about 20 explosions in the city. 

The city council reports that water reserves are limited in the city. Now locals use the water from the Starokrymskyi reservoir which will suffice for half a year. 

First 10 mobile shelters will be installed in Sloviansk. RMA head Vadym Liakh pointed out they will be placed in all city districts.

Head of RMA, Pavlo Kyrylenko, said that russians killed 1 civilian in Vovchenka. 2 people were wounded. 

Last year, fires caused by ammunition destroyed 3 thousand 350 hectares of bread. 

Luhansk oblast

Towards Kupiansk and Lyman, the enemy attempted to improve its tactical positions. They shelled Nevske, Dibrova, Chervonopopivka. 

According to the General Staff of Ukraine, russian soldiers occupy the apartments of Rubizhne locals. To choose 1st and 2nd floor apartments, while civilians live on upper floors. 

Serhiy Haidai, head of RMA, reports that russians can’t break through Ukrainian defense, but they are attempting to find weak spots every day. There is the most complicated situation in  the area of Kreminna. 

Russian soldiers keep their equipment in residential districts. Locals are forced to sell the canned products to survive. In Starobilsk, apartments and houses are being examined under the disguise of gas meter inspection. 

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Kyiv City State Administration reported that as a result of the russian missile attack and damage to the energy infrastructure on March 9, Kyivteploenergo is using emergency response algorithms: more than half of the capital’s boiler houses have been switched to alternative sources of electricity. Heating and hot water were disrupted at Oleksandrivka Clinical Hospital, where nearly 700 patients are receiving inpatient treatment. Work is underway to reconnect the hospital’s central heating station to three mobile boiler houses.

After the russian terrorist strikes, 30% of consumers are left without heating. Electricity and water supply to Kyiv consumers have been fully resumed. Restoration works are underway.

Finland has already provided €750 million in military aid to Ukraine and is preparing the fourteenth military aid package for Ukraine. Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin stated this at a joint press conference with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv. “At the meeting with the head of the Finnish government, we discussed defense and security issues, the restoration of Ukraine, sanctions against russia, bringing russia to justice, and the peace formula,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with the Minister of Defense of Norway Bjørn Arild Gram in Kyiv. They discussed ways to increase the amount of weapon supplies to Ukraine and accelerate their delivery. The President thanked the Norwegian government for its decision to allocate EUR 7 billion for a five-year program of support for Ukraine.

Kyiv paid tribute to the fallen battalion commander of the 67th Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the youngest Hero of Ukraine, Dmytro ‘Da Vinci’ Kotsyubailo. He was killed near Bakhmut on March 7. The ceremony took place at St. Michael’s Cathedral, and afterward, there was a memorial service on Independence Square. Thousands of people came to the memorial service, including President Zelensky and Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Zaluzhny, and Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin expressed her respect for the Ukrainian Hero.

At the Independence Square in Kyiv, last respects were also paid to Oleh and Mykyta Khomyuk, who were killed in Donetsk oblast. Oleh, callsign ‘Khoma’, and his son Mykyta, callsign ‘Tourist,’ were killed in the battle for Bakhmut. During the shelling, the father covered his son, but a projectile exploded near their heads. The men died together.

The presentation of a book ‘Mariupol. The Book of the Brave’ by Ruslan ‘David’, a fighter with the Azov Battalion, took place in Kyiv. In April 2022, he flew into the besieged Azovstal plant by helicopter and fought in urban battles, where he lost his leg. ‘David’ returned from captivity last June in a prisoner-of-war exchange. The book includes the fighter’s memories of the battles and everyday life of the defenders of Mariupol, as well as recollections of living and fallen heroes

Zhytomyr oblast

Due to the heroic efforts of power engineers, power supply was restored to critical infrastructure in the oblast in the first hours after the russian missile attack. According to Vitaliy Bunechko, head of the Zhytomyr RMA, more than 100,000 households, i.e. two-thirds of the residents of the oblast, have already been connected to the power grid, while 42,000 remain without electricity. Earlier, 150,000 households were left without power supply as a result of the russian terrorist attack launched on 9 March.

The regional military administration reported that starting from today, power outage schedules are being implemented in Zhytomyr oblast. Blackouts will be implemented in turns by different sectors of the city. Large enterprises of the city will adopt alternate work schedules.

According to the city administration, in Zhytomyr, trams and trolleybuses will not work until the beginning of next week due to electricity shortage. In order to provide efficient public transport services to the citizens, the company increased the number of city buses on different routes.

The Road Service of the oblast reported that roads of national importance in Zhytomyr oblast will be temporarily without street lighting. Road companies are helping to eliminate the consequences of damage to energy infrastructure.

According to Vitaliy Bunechko, the head of the Regional Military Administration, representatives of the German foundation “St Augustine and Friends Help” and city administration discussed new humanitarian projects for Zhytomyr oblast – the provision of modern medical equipment for wounded soldiers who arrive weekly for long-term rehabilitation with various blast traumas and injuries at the regional hospital.

Sumy oblast

According to the report by the Sumy RMA, over the past day, the russian troops shelled Seredyno-Buda, Bilopillya and Nova Sloboda communities. There were 18 artillery strikes in total. The shelling in Seredino-Buda damaged an apartment in a residential building (walls and windows were smashed), outbuildings, and a power line. Аt midnight, the russians shelled the territory of the Znob-Novhorodske community with mortars – 6 hits.

The RMA reported that an event was held in Sumy in the format of a discussion platform called ‘Sumy Oblast: A Year of Resistance.’ They discussed the organization of defense and resistance, information and humanitarian assistance, and the maintenance of infrastructure during the occupation of the oblast. The meeting brought together representatives of the regional authorities, heads of communities, military, police, volunteers, journalists, heads of educational and medical institutions, and entrepreneurs.

Chernihiv oblast

The enemy continues shelling the border areas of Chernihiv oblast. The ‘North’ Operational Command reported that there were 14 mortar bombs fired from 120 mortars in the area of Yeline settlement.

On March 9, 2022, a commemoration took place in Chernihiv honoring the soldiers who were killed in Lukashivka during one of the largest battles in the defense of Chernihiv a year ago. Soldiers of the 2nd company of the Chernihiv 21st separate rifle battalion and the 16th separate motorised infantry battalion of the 58th brigade named after Hetman Ivan Vyhovsky held defence in and around Lukashivka, preventing russian troops from completely surrounding Chernihiv.

More than 1,000 unemployed people joined the ‘Restoration Army’ in Chernihiv oblast. They are involved in repair and restoration works, build fortifications and defense structures, repair civil defense shelters, collect firewood, weave camouflage nets and make trench candles for the needs of the Armed Forces.

SES reported that Danish Refugee Council in Ukraine provided modern equipment and protective gear to EOD specialists of Chernihiv oblast. This equipment will be used to clear settlements and territories of the oblast from explosive ordnance.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

According to Head of the regional council Mykola Lukashuk, the occupiers attacked Nikopol with missiles last evening, and at night they fired heavy artillery.  There is significant damage to an object of the energy infrastructure, three settlements of the district were partially left without electricity. In addition, the enemy shelled the Chervonohryhorivka community several times with heavy artillery: the administrative building, private and transport enterprises, three private residential buildings, and as many commercial buildings, a car, and power grids were mutilated. There was also artillery shelling in the Nikopol region in the morning. 

The head of Dnipropetrovsk RMA Serhii Lysak reported that there were 2 casualties and 3  wounded in the afternoon due to artillery shelling in the Nikopol region. A transport company, a three-story building, and seven private houses were damaged.

In Dnipro, they paid farewell to the spokeswoman of the State Emergency Service Yevheniia Dudka. Yevheniia was wounded during a repeated missile attack on the Dnipro airport on April 10, 2022. She was only 32 years old.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​Vinnytsia Mayor Serhiy Morрunov announced that Vinnytsia and Münster are now official partners. The solidarity partnership agreement with the German city, which has supported Vinnytsia since the invasion, was signed during the visit of the Vinnytsia delegation to Münster.

The “Azov Regiment – Angels of Mariupol” exhibition was opened in Vinnytsia in the “Museum of the Brave” of the local history museum. The exhibition includes posters with biographies and photos of 183 people who died during the defense of Mariupol and Azovstal.

Kirovohrad oblast

In the city of Svitlovodsk in the Oleksandriia region, they paid farewell to the combat medic of the “Azov” battalion, Yuliia Zubchenko.She was killed  on May 8, 2022 at the “Azovstal” plant by  a direct hit by an aerial bomb in the bunker where the hospital was located.

Poltava oblast

The International Committee of the Red Cross has provided Kremenchuk with powerful generators that will ensure centralized heating woln`t be turn off in case of a blackout.

In the Shcherbani community, 350 vouchers for purchasing groceries in supermarket chains were distributed to internally displaced persons. This is assistance from a German charitable organization.

Cherkasy oblast

A 10-year-old schoolgirl from Uman donated 120,000 hryvnias for an SUV for the State Border Service. Mariika from Uman donated the money she had collected for several years to support the Defense Forces of Ukraine.

The labor training teacher of the Cherkasy school makes mini-stoves, together with his students, for the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. While the idea of ​​such a mini-stove has already existed, the design standards are the teacher’s own development.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

The situation towards Zaporizhzhia has not significantly changed. The enemy concentrates its main efforts on holding the occupied borders. Yesterday, March 9, the enemy launched 107 attacks on the positions of Ukrainian defenders, using tank weapons, rocket and barrel artillery along the entire line of contact.

russian invaders launched 76 strikes on Zaporizhzhia oblast. The occupiers shelled Zaporizhzhia, Novoandriivka, Charivne, Mala Tokmachka, Chervone, Bilohiria, Poltavka, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Novodanylivka, Olhivske, Malynivka, Novopavlivka, Kamianske, Stepove, Plavni. Objects of critical, civilian and residential infrastructure came under enemy fire. Residential houses in Polohy and Vasylivka regions were damaged. 1 person was injured.

As a result of shelling by the russian occupiers, rescuers eliminated 5 fires in Zaporizhzhia city, Zaporizhzhia and Polohy regions. Sappers removed 4 incendiary combat elements found in populated areas in Polohy region. The mentioned explosives were destroyed by appropriately trained pyrotechnic specialists in compliance with safety rules.

The occupiers are trying to change the design status of nuclear installations at the Zaporizhzhia NPP without authorization. According to the Enerhoatom, they interfere with the operation of heating and electricity supply systems. The russians are building unknown structures near the reserve power station of Unit No. 6 at the ZNPP.

Mykolaiv oblast

A 9-year-old boy blew up on a mine in the village of Lymany located near Mykolaiv. A local resident found an unexploded cluster projectile and brought it to the yard. The projectile detonated, and the child received shrapnel injuries. The boy has now been taken to the hospital. Doctors are fighting for his life.

Another batch of building materials arrived in Mykolaiv as part of cooperation with the UN agency. The materials will be used to restore residential and utility facilities damaged by russian shelling.

Mykolaiv oblast received the medicines, medical supplies and equipment from Volyn partners. The aid is provided on a regular basis coordinated by the Mykolaiv RMA, the health care department of the Mykolaiv RMA, together with the “Heart in the Palms” foundation. The medical products were collected with the help of Ukrainian diaspora in the USA and Canada, including the “Medical Team International” organization.

Odesa oblast

The Odesa highway service handed over a new car to our defenders, who are currently fighting in Donetsk oblast. Also, the vice president of OSF HealthCare, Chris Manson from the USA, handed over ambulance cars for the Territorial Defence Forces soldiers who are currently on the frontline.

Odesa rescuers underwent psychological rehabilitation using hippotherapy at the “Arion” Equestrian Sports Club. The rescuers were able to relax, focus on positive thoughts, feel confident in their own abilities and generally enjoy the therapy. And now they are ready to return to saving people.

Three Odesa city hospitals received medicines for a total amount of almost 500 thousand euros from the Maltese Aid Service supported by the municipality of the sister city of Regensburg. The Maltese Aid Service, a non-governmental international organization, provides humanitarian medical aid in more than 30 countries. The aid included antibiotics, painkillers, other medicines and medical equipment.

Kherson oblast

The russian occupiers shelled the Tavriiskyi district of Kherson using artillery. The building caught fire due to the impact of an enemy projectile. A 35-year-old man died on the spot from his injuries.

Yesterday, March 9, russian invaders shelled the territory of Kherson oblast 79 times, firing more than 400 shells. Peaceful settlements suffered from attacks from mortars, MLRS, artillery, tanks and UAVs.The enemy shells hit a public transport stop, a shop, private and apartment buildings in Kherson city. As a result of russian shelling, 4 people were killed, 3 residents of Kherson oblast were wounded, including a 13-year-old boy.

The police of Kherson oblast discovered the body of a 63-year-old local resident at the cemetery in the village Bruskinske, Velyka Oleksandrivka community, tortured by the russians. It was preliminarily established that the man was killed by the russian military in September, when the settlement was occupied by the russian army.

The occupiers shelled Oleshky, Kherson oblast. According to the General Staff, this is how the russian invaders are trying to discredit the Defense Forces of Ukraine.

The Defense Forces destroyed the shuttle flotilla of the russian subversive and reconnaissance group together with the russian military personnel near the islands towards Kherson. 7 boats with outboard motors, equipped with machine guns, with reinforced sides and more than 20 saboteurs were eliminated by the Ukrainian defenders.

Two cargo minibuses, three minivans and three passenger cars were delivered to the Chornobaivka community from the Lithuanian tax service. The vehicles will be used for public and infrastructure needs of the community.

Police officers continue to deliver humanitarian kits to victims of military operations in the most remote villages of Kherson oblast. Juvenile police officers brought humanitarian kits to families with children from police officers of Chernivtsi oblast and benefactors from Germany. People received warm clothes, blankets, food packages, and childre – stationery and toys.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The RMA held a meeting with representatives of the Ukrainian Social Investment Fund. They discussed the construction and repair of residential facilities to provide housing for IDPs.

Zakarpattia oblast

The RMA reported that three leading surgeons from the US performed unique operations on children and military personnel in Zakarpattia oblast during the week.

The RMA held a meeting with representatives of the mission of UNICEF. The key goal is to provide maximum support to children, especially IDPs and those left without parental care.

Vouchers for UAH 6,6K are issued to IDPs persons with disabilities of groups 1 and 2 who are registered in Uzhgorod after February 24, 2022. Vouchers can be used to purchase groceries and essential items at supermarkets.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The Polish Aviation Medical Service, the Warsaw Medical University, the communal non-profit enterprise “Regional Clinical Center of Emergency Medical Aid and Disaster Medicine of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Council” and the Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University signed a memorandum of cooperation.

The RMA reported that since the war began 88 shelters have been created for IDPs in Ivano-Frankivsk oblast. Now almost 5K people live in them. The 89th large shelter with 500 places is about to be opened.

From March 26 to 31, a team of American doctors will operate on Ukrainian military personnel on the basis of the regional clinical hospital. Over a hundred soldiers with severe head and neck injuries are waiting for this help.

In the village of Bovshiv in Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, hundreds of people came to pay their respects to Hero of Ukraine Dmytro Kotsiubailo, commander of the Da Vinchi Wolves special unit who fell in the battles near Bakhmut.

Lviv oblast

The RMA reported that next week, the Western Regional Center of the Coordinating Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War will open in Lviv.

The RMA reported that at the parish of St. John Paul II of the Roman Catholic Church (Sokilnyky village), a tent kitchen  to prepare dinners for IDPs was opened. 

The National Anthem of Ukraine was solemnly sung in the center of Lviv. The anthem was performed on the occasion of the 158th anniversary of the first public performance. Rivne oblast

The RMA reported that in the oblast, instructional classes of military units are held, which are coordinated by commander of the operational group of troops Volyn, Brigadier General Vasyl Zubanych.

This week, 57 Ukrainians were evacuated to European countries for treatment.
