War in Ukraine today: latest news, March 09, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 379th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The russian federation launched another massive missile attack on critical infrastructure of our country and civilian homes, hitting several targets. Civilians were killed. The russian aggressor does not abandon its intentions to occupy Ukraine. Having no significant success on the battlefield, the enemy continues to use terror tactics, thereby grossly violating the norms of International Humanitarian Law.

In total, the enemy launched 84 missiles of various types during the day. 34 missiles were destroyed by our defenders, another 8 did not reach their targets. The enemy also carried out 12 air strikes, in particular, using 8 Shahed-136 UAVs. Half of them were shot down.

The missile threat remains high throughout Ukraine.

The enemy continues its attempts to encircle the city of Bakhmut, with further access to the administrative borders of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.The invaders’ main focus is the offensive operations against Kupiansk, Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Shakhtarsk.

The operational situation towards Volyn, Polissia, Siversk and Sloboda remained unchanged. The russian federation maintains a military presence on the territory of the Republic of Belarus, but no offensive groups have been detected. At the same time, the enemy continues to fortify the area in the border areas of Kursk oblast.

The enemy fired mortar and artillery shells near the settlements of Yeline, Chernihiv oblast; Atynske, Sumy oblast; Kozacha Lopan, Strilecha, Krasne, Vovchansk and Bolohivka in Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk and Lyman, the enemy is trying to break through the defense of our troops. It shelled populated areas, including Dvorichna, Hrianykivka, Zakhidne, Kyslivka and Berestove in Kharkiv oblast; Nevske and Chervonopopivka in Luhansk oblast, and Rozdolivka in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Bakhmut, the enemy does not stop assaulting the city of Bakhmut. Our defenders repelled numerous attacks in the areas of Bakhmut and Ivanivske. Vasyukivka, Minkivka, Dubove-Vasylivka, Bohdanivka, Bakhmut, Kurdiumivka and Maiorsk in Donetsk oblast came under enemy attack.

Towards Avdiivka and Shakhtarsk sectors, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensives in the direction of Krasnohorivka, Kamianka, Avdiivka, Severne, Pervomaiske, Nevelske, Maryinka, Pobeda and Vuhledar in Donetsk region. In particular, Avdiivka, Vodiane, Heorhiivka, Nevelske, Krasnohorivka, Pobieda, Vuhledar, Prechystivka and Neskuchne in Donetsk region were subjected to hostile attacks.

The enemy is conducting defensive actions against Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts. The areas near the contact line were shelled, namely Novosilka and Novopil in Donetsk oblast; Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Huliaypilske, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka, Kamianske in Zaporizhzhia oblast, as well as Mykhailivka in Kherson oblast and the city of Kherson.

In some settlements of the temporarily occupied Kherson oblast, russian invaders have intensified looting. They are taking looted property and household appliances out of Hola Prystan and Nova Zburivka by trucks that were used to deliver ammunition to their units.

Over the last day, the aviation of the Defense Forces carried out 7 strikes on buildups of occupants’ personnel and military equipment.

Rocket and artillery units hit a control center, 6 buildups of enemy personnel, 2 logistics centers, 3 ammunition depots, an electronic warfare station and an anti-aircraft missile system at a firing position.


Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine  announced that russia has launched a massive attack on Ukraine. There were 81 missiles of various types fired. The air defense shot down 34 of the 48 cruise missiles. The following missiles types were launched:  the Kh-101/Kh-555 ; Kalibr sea-launched missiles; Kh-22 air-launched cruise missiles; Kh-47 Kinzhal air-launched cruise missiles; 2 Kh-31P and 6 Kh-59 guided aircraft missiles; and S-300 anti-aircraft guided missiles. In addition, 8 Shahed-136/131 strike UAVs were launched.

Energoatom reports that due to the russian shelling, the last line of communication with the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP was cut off. Units 5 and 6 are put into cold shutdown. If the external power supply to the plant is not restored within this time, an accident with radiation consequences may occur. As of 16:00, March 9, it has been restored.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, russian troops are trying to break through the defense towards Kupiansk.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that the enemy shelled the city and the oblast. There were at least 15 hits of S-300 missiles. Critical infrastructure facilities were targeted. In addition, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged in Kharkiv. The city has no electricity, heating or water.

Oleh Chernobai, Head of Pisochyn settlement, informed that about a hundred buildings were damaged as a result of the russian terrorist attack. According to him, private and apartment buildings, shops, a library and a lyceum sustained varying degrees of damage.

Two elderly women were lightly injured. A 71-year-old woman was hospitalized and a 74-year-old woman received medical assistance on the spot. Another rocket in Pisochyn hit a swamp in an open area.

In Slobozhanske, Chuhuiv region, a rocket damaged greenhouses of a vegetable-growing enterprise.

Work is ongoing to eliminate the consequences of the hits. All emergency services are working at the scene.

Residents of Kharkiv and some settlements in Bohodukhiv, Chuhuiv and Kharkiv regions are still without electricity.

Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, Ukrenergo CEO, noted that Kharkiv oblast is among the regions most affected by russian attacks.

Donetsk oblast

Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander of the Land Forces, says that the defense of Bakhmut allows Ukrainian troops to gain time for a future offensive. He emphasized that the city’s defense by the Ukrainian military remains essential.  

Oleksiy Roslov, Head of the Kostiantynivka City Military Administration, reported that at 14:50, the russian military shelled Kostiantynivka with artillery. One woman was wounded. The shelling damaged some houses.

russian troops shelled Donetsk oblast 29 times with aircraft, Grads, artillery, and mortars. Avdiivka suffered the most attacks (15) performed by enemy aircraft, Grad rocket launchers and artillery. The shelling destroyed and damaged nine residential buildings, a factory building and workshop, a hospital, a garage, and an outbuilding.

Towards Volnovakha, Vuhledar, Novoukrainka and Prechystivka came under fire, with no casualties reported.

Towards Horlivka, 1 person was injured in Bakhmut, at least 3 houses damaged. The town was virtually destroyed. In Chasovyi Yar, there were hits on the territory of an enterprise and in a residential area – a house was damaged, no casualties. The outskirts of Soledar and Toretsk communities were shelled.

Towards Lysychansk, 7 houses were damaged in the Zvanivka community: 4 in Pereizne and 3 in Zvanivka. Nine attacks were recorded in Torske and Zarichne of the Lyman community.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, Head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, reports that over the past day, russians killed 2 civilians in Donetsk oblast – in Bakhmut and Avdiivka. Four more people were injured in the oblast.

Luhansk oblast

Towards Kupiansk and Lyman, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensives near Bilohorivka. They shelled Stelmakhivka, Nevske and Chervonopopivka with artillery. 

Serhii Haidai, Head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, informs that the front line is relatively quiet. After the losses, the enemy pulled back to replenish their reserves. No advancement of the occupiers is observed.

Ukrainian authorities do not have access to the occupied territory of Luhansk oblast. Therefore, they do not know about the state of cultural, medical or any other institutions.

Serhii Haidai, Head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, informs that the theater in Sievierodonetsk was destroyed, the ‘Belgian Heritage’ was shot by the russian occupation forces.

An active phase of hostilities is currently underway near Chervonopopivka in the Kreminna region. In addition to shelling, there are contact battles. According to Serhii Haidai, Head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, they cannot say that the settlement is completely de-occupied, but the situation there is under control. Ukrainian defenders do not yet have full control over Chervonopopivka.

The Luhansk Military Administration reported that in Kreminna and Nyzhnia Duvanka, russians are evicting locals from their homes, residents of Rubizhne are receiving utility bills, and ammunition is already being delivered to Luhansk from remote regions of russia.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Air Force of Ukraine reported that the country was shelled for the first time with so many different types of missiles . In particular, six Kinzhal missiles were fired, one of which hit an infrastructure object in Kyiv.

Serhii Popko, Head of the KCMA said that the air alert in the capital lasted for almost seven hours. As a result of another terrorist attack, an infrastructure facility in the Holosiivskyi district was damaged. Two people were wounded by rocket fragments, 5 cars destroyed, 15 cars damaged, and facades of houses were damaged in the Sviatoshynskyi district.

Vitalii Klychko, Mayor of Kyiv reported that 40% of the capital’s consumers were without heating due to emergency power outages. Kyivteploenergo restored electricity supply of heat to 300 residential buildings. More than half of the city’s boiler houses switched to alternative sources of electricity supply. All services are working to eliminate the consequences of a russian missile hit.

DTEK Kyiv Regional Power Grids reported that emergency power outages have been canceled in Kyiv oblast. However, due to overloading of one of the lines, outages are still in effect in part of the Holosiivskyi, Solomyanskyi and Svyatoshynskyi districts. Emergency shutdowns are to reduce the load on the network and avoid significant damage to the energy infrastructure.

The Kyiv RMA reported that schoolchildren from Kyiv oblast stayed at home for distance learning. This decision is due to the security situation and the massive missile attack of the enemy, which took place on the night of March 8-9. Preschool institutions are recommended to work in the mode of groups on duty.

Vitalii Klychko, Kyiv mayor, announced that the stay of residents of the capital at underground metro stations during air alarms will become more comfortable thanks to the humanitarian assistance of the International Organization for Migration. The municipal enterprise “Kyiv Metropoliten” received 10,500 folding chairs, 1,500 blankets and 1,500 mattresses. Aid will be delivered to each underground station used as a shelter.

Zhytomyr oblast

Vitalii Bunechko, Head of the Zhytomyr RMA said that the enemy attacked the oblast with kamikaze drones. Almost 150 K consumers of the oblast were left without power supply due to a damaged energy infrastructure facility near Zhytomyr. After the fire is extinguished, power companies will be able to start switching consumers to backup power lines.

Serhii Sukhomlyn, Zhytomyr Mayor, said that most of the city houses are without electricity or water. Alternative power sources are launched at critical infrastructure facilities. Electric transport could not enter city routes, but the number of communal buses was increased. On the roads, 30% of the traffic lights are in operation  – traffic controllers are on duty at complex intersections.

The Zhytomyr City Council informed that schools and kindergartens would receive children after the air raid warning was canceled. But no hot meals could be provided due to power outages.

The Zhytomyr RMA reminded that in case of long-term power outages, everyone can come to Invincibility Centres to recharge gadgets, warm up and use the Internet. There are 306 Invincibility Centres in the oblast, not including those provided by businesses and the State Emergency Service.

Sumy oblast

The Sumy RMA reported that the enemy shelled the communities of Bilopillia, Velika Pysarivka, Shalyhine and Yunakivka. There were 21 mortar and artillery strikes. The window of a private house on the territory of the Velika Pysarivka community was damaged due to russian shelling from the small automatic weapons.

At night, the Defense Forces of Sumy oblast detected enemy Shahid UAVs in the northern and central parts of the oblast. Also, the enemy made 4 artillery strikes on the territory of the Seredino-Buda community.

There were three missile strikes by the enemy on Shostka during the morning terrorist attack of the russian federation. One of the enemy missiles hit a city enterprise and residential buildings were damaged due to the shelling.

The State Emergency Service reported that the rescuers of Sumy oblast are eliminating the consequences of enemy missile attacks, extinguishing fires, providing assistance to the injured civilians, clearing the debris and repairing damaged houses. 

Chernihiv oblast

The ‘North’ Operational Command reported that the Defense Forces of Chernihiv oblast destroyed an enemy cruise missile near Pryluky.

Three operators of humanitarian demining, including international missions, work in Chernihiv oblast. Vyacheslav Chaus, Head of the Chernihiv RMA reported that a joint meeting discussed demining operations in the oblast. 

The Chernihiv City Council informed that the Museum of Fortitude is planned to be created in the former building of the first city polyclinic. A working group will be created to develop the concept of the museum, and collect testimonies and exhibits for it. One floor of the museum is planned to be dedicated to the defense of Chernihiv from the russian invaders in February-March 2022.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

According to Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the Regional Council, the occupation army of the russian federation terrorized Dnipropetrovsk oblast during the night. The enemy attacked the area with missiles, drones, and heavy artillery. A 34-year-old man was killed, and a 28-year-old woman and a 19-year-old boy were injured as a result of the shelling of the Chervonohryhorivka community in the Nikopol region. The injured were hospitalized. The enemy was attacking the community with anti-aircraft missiles almost the whole day: 12 private houses were damaged there, one farm building destroyed and 9 mutilated, and the power line was also damaged. The occupiers also struck Nikopol with heavy artillery. Four five-story buildings were damaged in the city. In the morning, the Marhanets community was attacked. A private house was mutilated. 

As for drone attacks and missile strikes, they hit Nikopol, Kryvyi Rih, Dnipro, and Pavlohrad regions. One person was killed, and two injured. Energy infrastructure and industrial enterprises were seriously damaged.

During the day, the occupation army of the russian federation struck the Chervonohryhorivka community with heavy artillery three times. One 73-year-old man was injured and hospitalized. A dozen private houses and three farm buildings were damaged in the community due to the shelling.

Serhii Lysak, Head of the Dnipropetrovsk RMA said that the defenders from the ‘East’  Air Command shot down 7 enemy missiles over Dnipropetrovsk oblast. 

Vinnytsia oblast

Nataliia Gumeniuk, ​​ Spokeswoman of  the ‘South’ Operational Command, informs that  the russian army attacked Vinnytsia at night. The russians targeted critical infrastructure facilities. 

Uliana Sozanska is the first female conductor in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Previously, the girl led the military band of the Air Force in Vinnytsia, but after the death of her brother, she decided to change her specialty. Her brother Oleksandr defended Ukraine since 2014. After the Euromaidan, he joined the Golden Gate battalion, fought in the Right Sector and served in the amphibious assault since 2018. He received the rank of captain and became the commander of the fire support battalion. Oleksandr was killed on February 17 near Bakhmut when his car was caught on a mine. After the death of her brother, Uliana decided to go to war: she took courses in first aid, and learned to shoot from MANPADS. She is convinced that she belongs in her brother’s ranks now.

Kirovohrad oblast

The russian military fired on an energy infrastructure facility in Kropyvnytskyi oblast with missiles and drones. The prosecutor’s office initiated criminal proceedings for violation of the laws and customs of war.

Poltava oblast

More than UAH 50 K was collected in Poltava. The townspeople bought more than 2,000 tulips. The profit from the sale was transferred to the purchase of necessary optics for Poltava fighters on the front line. Funds were collected for the purchase of four thermal imagers for the military fighting towards Mariinka, Bakhmut, and Avdiivka.

Cherkasy oblast

In Smila, parishioners of the Church of the Baptist of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine collected UAH 100K. With these funds, a Mavic 3 drone was purchased for the Armed Forces. The drone and other necessary items will be sent to the military in the near future.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Last night, russians launched five missiles from S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems at a critical infrastructure facility. After the explosion, a fire broke out on the territory of the enterprise, which was extinguished. The blast wave and debris damaged the equipment.

Yesterday the invaders shelled civilian infrastructure in 20 settlements. There were 5 reports of the destruction of civilian buildings (apartments) and infrastructure as a result of russian shelling.

The power supply to the Zaporizhzhia NPP, interrupted by today’s missile strikes, has been restored from the Ukrainian power grid. The ZNPP is switching from diesel generators to receiving electricity for its own needs from the Integrated Power Grid of Ukraine.

Towards Zaporizhzhia, the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to hit enemy military targets. Soldiers of the 44th Artillery Brigade, with the help of aerial reconnaissance from the 128th Mountain Assault Brigade, hit an RB-301B Borisoglebsk-2 electronic warfare complex. in Polohy, Ukrainian artillery destroyed two enemy bases at once.

In certain areas of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia oblasts, citizens, including the elderly and people with disabilities, are forced to obtain invaders’ permits to move. The permits are necessary to solve administrative, medical and other problems. This includes receiving pensions, which require residents to travel to other settlements to receive them. The occupation authorities are increasing filtration measures and administrative and police regime to prevent possible protests.

Ukrzaliznytsia reported that routes were delayed due to the massive shelling of Ukraine by russia at energy infrastructure facilities and the blackout of a number of areas across the country. To improve the situation, reserve diesel locomotives were engaged.

Mykolaiv oblast

The Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration reported that during a russian missile attack, Air Defense units destroyed nine missiles of various types and one russian reconnaissance drone.

Educational institutions received more than 4,200 laptops thanks to the Olena Zelenska Foundation as part of the Global Business Coalition for Education (GBC-Education) initiative and the Digital Asset for Ukraine project of HP and Microsoft.

Mykolaiv honored the memory of Taras Shevchenko, a prominent Ukrainian poet, artist, politician and public figure. Today, on the 209th anniversary of the poet’s birth, residents gathered at the monument to the poet and took part in a solemn flower-laying ceremony.

Odesa oblast

The Odesa Regional Military Administration informed that at night, the invaders massively attacked the region with missiles. Preliminarily, about 40 residential and non-residential buildings were damaged by the shock wave of a hit. Most of the damage was to roofs and windows. None of the residents were physically injured. Ukrainian Air Defense destroyed 6 missiles and a drone over Odesa oblast.

Medical workers of Odesa Primary Health Care Centre #4 held a charity fair. Guests of the city and residents were treated to delicious Ukrainian dishes. Money from the sale will be sent to support our defenders.

Due to a night missile attack, Odesa public transport did not run its routes and the city was left without electricity due to a hit to a power facility. However, by the afternoon, power engineers managed to restore power supply. Power lines were damaged throughout Odesa oblast.

The memory of Taras Shevchenko was honored in Odesa. On the 209th anniversary of the birth of Ukrainian poet, writer and public figure Taras Shevchenko, flowers were laid at the monument to the Great Kobzar in the park of the same name.

Kherson oblast

On March 8, the enemy continued shelling the right bank and launched about 90 attacks against civilians and across the Dnipro-Buh estuary. One civilian was killed and four injured. As a result of attack missions, our missile and artillery units destroyed an Msta-S self-propelled artillery system on the Kinburn Spit, an Orlan-10 drone, a tank and armored vehicles on the left bank of Kherson oblast. 11 invaders were eliminated.

During the morning enemy shelling, several fires broke out simultaneously. Public transport stopped, a shop and a residential building caught fire. The death toll is four people and two more were injured. Among the killed are a 33-year-old shop assistant at the public transport stop, a 51-year-old woman and a 68-year-old man who were at the stop. Another resident died of the injuries in a nearby private building and the owner of the building was injured. Later a 27-year-old resident of the regional centre, who had been injured on the square, also received medical assistance.

russian invaders have become more active in looting in some settlements of the temporarily occupied Kherson oblast. They are taking looted property, household equipment from Hola Prystan and Nova Zburivka using trucks for delivering ammunition to their units.

In Kherson this week, the World Central Kitchen distributed food packages to residents of the Komyshany region. Yesterday, 81 families in Blahovishchenske received food parcels, vegetables and milk from the World Central Kitchen. 519 families in Pryozerne also received aid.

Howard Buffett, American businessman and philanthropist arrived in Kherson oblast. He is actively helping Ukraine with humanitarian de-mining, providing fire trucks and vehicles.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Servicemen of the mortar battery of the 3rd battalion of the 68th separate hunting brigade named after Oleksa Dovbush received a MAVIC 3 Fly More Combo quadcopter. UAH 118 500 to purchase a quadcopter was collected during the Victorious Spirit of Christmas charity marathon. 

Zakarpattia oblast

IDPs shelters and educational institutions of Zakarpattia received over 220 heaters, clothes and food from American donors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The RMA reported that an energy infrastructure object of the oblast was hit at night. There were no killed or injured.

The RMA reported that as part of another exchange of prisoners, which took place on March 7, one serviceman from Prykarpattia returned to Ukraine.

IDPs shelters received 13 generators thanks to the International Organization for Migration and the financial support of Canada.

Lviv oblast

Around 4 o’clock in the morning, an enemy rocket fell in the Zolochiv region during an air alarm period. Air Defense Forces shot down the rest of the missiles that were in the airspace of Lviv oblast. As a result of the missile attack, three men and two women who were at home at that moment were killed. The fire destroyed three residential buildings, three cars, a garage and several outbuildings. The fire was extinguished. The demolition of the destroyed buildings has been completed. 28 rescuers, 5 units of special equipment and a canine team were involved in the work.

Fighters of 24 separate mechanized brigades named after King Danylo received 20 cars from British benefactors.

The Lviv Regional Clinical Hospital received a high-frequency electrosurgical EHVCH-200 Nadia-4 device, a portable ultrasound device Sonosite M urbo with four sensors, consumables, medicines and medical clothing, from the CF ZDOROVI and Nova Ukraine.

The photo exhibition Keep Living! was opened in the Lviv Palace of Arts. The photos show women who lost their husbands and sons during the full-scale war.

Rivne oblast

During a working trip to Poland, Vitalii Koval, Head of the Rivne RMA, met with Veslava Burnos, vice-marshal of the Podlaskie Voivodeship. Cooperation was discussed.

In connection with the massive night attack of the enemy and the long stay of children in shelters, on March 9, schools in Rivne were switched to an asynchronous learning mode. Preschool education institutions worked as usual.

This year, 298 unemployed people from all districts were involved in socially useful works in Rivne oblast. As part of the Recovery Army project, most often people performed repair and restoration work.

Ternopil oblast

On the territory of the Pidhai community of the Ternopil region, the fall of the fragments of the rocket was recorded. The explosion damaged 5 buildings, one of which is residential. There are no victims. According to the results of the inspection of the wreckage by explosives experts, no dangerous parts were found, but the scene may be affected by remnants of rocket fuel. Operative-investigative groups of the Security Service of Ukraine and the main office of the National Police in the oblast, as well as specialists of the main office of the State Emergency Service, are working at the scene of the incident to establish the marking of the missile and collect physical evidence.

The Executive Committee of Ternopil decided to create a Housing Fund for temporary residence of IDPs in the Ternopil City Territorial Community. The Fund has included modular housing units located in the village of Malashivka

The RMA reported that as part of the regular exchange of prisoners, which took place on March 7, five servicemen from Ternopil oblast returned to Ukraine.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi received a fire truck for the needs of rescuers, food, hygiene products, warm clothes and generators from firefighters, students and benefactors of the German town of Bensheim.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA held a meeting with heads of territorial communities. Compensating funds of generators to ensure the work of business entities in the conditions of the energy crisis was discussed.

The main department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Chernivtsi oblast and the Department of Youth and Sports of the Chernivtsi Regional State Administration signed a Memorandum of Cooperation and Partnership in the sphere of professional orientation of young people, promotion of fire-technical knowledge and implementation of other tasks aimed at fire prevention and the ability to act in emergency situations.
