It has been the 319th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:

The enemy launched an airstrike on Kharkiv and 10 MLRS attacks, notably, on the civilian infrastructure of Donetsk, Mykolaiv and Kherson oblasts. 

The territory of Ukraine is still under the threat of air and missile strikes. 

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the occupiers shelled Ukrainian troops and civilian infrastructure in Buchky, Chernihiv oblast; Starykove, Shalyhine, Volfyne, Basivka, Petrushivka, Sumy oblast and Strilecha, Zelene, Ambarne and Hatysche, Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk and Lyman, the enemy fired from mortars, barrels and rockets at 16 settlements, such as Dvorichna, Kupiansk, Kyslivka, Kotliarivka and Krokhmalne, Kharkiv oblast and Stelmakhivka, Makiivka, Ploschanka, Dibrova, Luhansk oblast. 

Towards Bakhmut, over 15 settlements were shelled: Spirne, Berestove, Bilohorivka, Soledar, Bakhmut, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Avdiivka, the enemy hit Avdiivka, Vesele, Nevesele, Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Mariinka, Novomykhailivka, Donetsk oblast. Towards Novopavlivka, the invaders shelled Vremivka, Velyka Novosilka and Vuhledar, Donetsk oblast. 

Towards Zaporizhzhia, 13 settlements were attacked. Among them are Zelene Pole, Novopil, Donetsk oblast, Huliaipole, Charivne, Scherbaky, Stepove, Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Towards Kherson, the artillery hits damaged the civilian infrastructure of Chornobaivka, Antonivka, Kherson, Zolota Balka. There are casualties among civilians.

Based on the available information, the so called prosecutor’s office of the russian occupying forces has started nationalizing the local enterprises in Kherson oblast from January 09.

The enemy is incurring losses. 300 occupiers were hospitalized to Lysychansk hospital, Luhansk oblast in a week.

Ukrainian aviation launched 17 hits on the buildup of manpower and 3 strikes on anti missile and anti aircraft systems.

Hanna Maliar advised that the invaders launched a fierce assault on Donetsk oblast. After their failure to occupy Soledar, the enemy changed tactics and launched a new assault. “They are advancing literally on the bodies of their soldiers, relying heavily on artillery, MLRS systems and mortars by firing at their own soldiers”, she added. Heavy battles are raging.

The Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine informed that the electronic military ID will be available through Diia app. However, a new military record does not mean that calls to the army will be sent through the app. 

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the invaders shelled at least nine settlements with tanks, mortars and artillery.

Head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleh Syniehubov, reported that the enemy attacked the region again. There was a missile attack, preliminary with S-300 missiles, on Shevchenkove settlement of Kupiansk region. Referring to the Regional Centre for Emergency Medical Care, two women, aged 50 and 60, were killed as a result of the shelling. Other 6 people were injured, including a 13-year-old girl who was sent to Kharkiv for an operation. The debris hit the neck right near the carotid artery. Shops were damaged and windows of buildings broken.

The enemy shelled settlements of Chuhuiv and Kupiansk districts with artillery, tanks and mortars. Dvorichna, Kupiansk, Milove, Pershotravneve, Starytsia, Vovchansk and other settlements were under attack. In Kupiansk, outbuildings were damaged and there was fire as a result of enemy attacks. In Vovchanski Khutory village of Chuhuiv district, a private residential building was damaged due to the shelling.

Yesterday, there were no casualties as a result of enemy attacks.

Donetsk oblast

Deputy Minister of Defence, Hanna Maliar, reported in her telegram channel that russians sent reserve groups of Wagner troops to storm Soledar. As of the evening, heavy hostilities continue. 

Two volunteers from the UK disappeared near Soledar. The police put them on the missing list. At first, the message about the search in telegram channel of Donetsk police contained the names and photos of foreigners, then this message was deleted and on the official website in the information about the search this data was removed. The police refused to explain the reason for the changes.

Head of Kostiantynivka City Military Administration, Oleksii Roslov, informed about a russian attack with missiles, hitting an industrial zone. Two explosions occurred in the city. 

Head of Kurakhivka City Military Administration, Roman Padun, reported about massive shelling – at least 2 civilians were injured and more than 20 buildings damaged.

Russians continued shooting at different parts of the frontline during the night.

Towards Volnovakha, there were periodic shelling of Vuhledar and the outskirts of Bohoiavlenka, Prechystivka and Vodiane. There were no casualties.

Towards Horlivka, 1 person was injured and 3 buildings damaged in Paraskoviivka of Soledar community. Soledar was shelled 10 times, and a shop was damaged. The outskirts of Chasiv Yar community were under attack, without casualties.

Towards Lysychansk, there was shelling of  Siversk and Serebrianka of Siversk community and of Torske and Zarichne of Lyman community. There were no casualties. The scope of destruction is being clarified.

Head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko, informed that yesterday russians killed 2 civilians in Bakhmut and Soledar. Another 2 civilians were injured.

Luhansk oblast

Yesterday our soldiers repelled enemy attacks in Chervonopopivka and Stelmakhivka. Towards Kupiansk, russians shelled Miasozharivka and Stelmakhivka with tanks and barrel artillery. Towards Lyman, Chervonopopivka, Dibrova, Kuzmyne, Makiivka, Nevske and Ploshchanka were targeted.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Ukrainian troops inflicted heavy losses to the invaders. Over the past week of fighting, about 300 russian soldiers were hospitalized in the temporarily occupied Lysychansk. 

According to Serhii Haidai, head of Luhansk RMA, towards Svatove and Kreminna, Ukrainian defenders are advancing by gradually liberating the territory occupied towards Kreminna. Russians are constantly attacking and shelling Bilohorivka. However our soldiers improved their positions there and are firmly holding the line. Russian shelling of the newly reclaimed Luhansk settlements killed 2 civilians and injured one. In Novoselivske, the occupiers did not leave any building intact. 

Luhansk RMA informed that russians are raiding to take hryvnia out of circulation. The kreml simplified recruitment to state service in the occupied territories. The occupiers are spreading false information on alleged strikes at hospitals where russian occupiers are being treated. 

According to Serhii Haidai, head of Luhansk RMA, one of the Ukrainian military units in Luhansk oblast destroyed 73 units of russian military equipment. He also noted that in one day Ukrainian defenders managed to damage 23 units of the enemy’s equipment.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The head of Kyiv RMA Oleksii Kuleba paid a working visit to the positions in the oblast and inspected firing points and trench bunkers. According to him, defense borders are being strengthened and positions are being fortified in Kyiv oblast. Soldiers are provided with required vehicles, special gear and equipment.

Minister of Development and Foreign Trade of Finland Ville Skinnari and Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Finland Krista Mikkonen visited Irpin. According to the Irpin City Council, the international delegation visited the modular town, where most of the houses were installed thanks to Finland. It will open in spring and provide housing for 276 Irpin families who lost their homes as a result of russian aggression.

A CEO of YASNO Serhiy Kovalenko announced that due to a drop in temperature and an increase in electricity consumption in Kyiv, there are more outages. In some districts, emergency blackouts are applied out of schedule. He noted that the repair of the power system continues and urged citizens to reduce electricity consumption.

According to the city state administration, all medical institutions in Kyiv are equipped with generators. Last week, the emergency ambulance system was provided with generators and re-equipped.

Kyiv oblast received a batch of generators from the government of the United Arab Emirates. According to the Kyiv Regional State Administration, 198 power supply devices were distributed among communities of the oblast and delivered to healthcare facilities, educational institutions, administrative buildings and critical infrastructure facilities.

The Regional Military Administration reported that 80 sets of computer equipment were handed over to educational institutions that suffered during the hostilities in Kyiv oblast. These are interactive whiteboards, projectors, laptops, printers, and digital laboratories. The equipment was also provided to educational institutions looted by russian occupiers. These are schools in Ivankiv, Poliske, Nemishayeve, Makariv, Velyka Dymerivka, Kalyta, and other communities.

A shelter for IDPs who were forced to leave their homes because of the war was opened in Fastiv. The project was implemented with the participation of the Roman Catholic community of the city, philanthropists, and local authorities.

In the capital, juvenile inspectors will be distributing reflective vests, key chains, and bracelets to children. According to the Kyiv Police, the fundraising was organized by Kyiv resident Olena Medvedeva with the help of Bavarian volunteer Bernadette Hollinger. In 10 days, they have collected about 2,000 reflective vests and other special equipment, thanks to which little Kyivans will be visible on the roads in the dark.

The Christmas tree at the Central Railway Station in Kyiv is equipped with a pedal electric generator. Anyone can light garlands on the festive tree by pedaling a bicycle generator for a certain time.

Zhytomyr oblast

The construction of a new emergency rescue unit continues in Zhytomyr oblast. The unit is aimed at eliminating the consequences of accidents and military actions. It will be one of 19 such rescue units in Ukraine. According to the regional military administration, the new unit will significantly improve the interaction of rescue units and reduce the time of arrival to fire scenes or destruction caused by missile strikes.

New shelter for patients and medical staff has been arranged in Romanivka hospital. This became possible thanks to the joint efforts of responsible business of Zhytomyr oblast, Romaniv residents and IDPs living in the community. The shelter, designed for 120 patients, has spots for patients to stay, operating rooms and other functional wards.

According to the Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration, there are four invincibility centers in the premises of railway stations in the oblast. They are located at the stations of Berdychiv, Korosten, and Zhytomyr. In total, there are 306 Invincibility Centers in the facilities and institutions of the oblast (responsible business and State Emergencies Service centers excluded).

Sumy oblast

Dmytro Zhyvytskyi, the Head of Sumy Regional Military Administration, reported that over the past 24 hours, the russians attacked five communities of Sumy oblast and launched 144 shells on the territory of the oblast.

The enemy shelled Esman community with Hrad MLRS, mortars, and barrel artillery. In total, there were 44 shells. A school, a club and four private houses were damaged.

Myropillia community came under mortar and artillery fire – there were 42 incoming shells. 5 houses of local residents and a farm were damaged.

Invaders opened mortar fire on Nova Sloboda community. There were 11 shells fired. The same weapons were used to shell Bilopillia area resulting in 29 incoming shells. A residential building was destroyed. 18 enemy mortar rounds landed on the territory of Khotyn community.

After 9 p.m., the territory of Seredyno-Buda community came under enemy fire. There were 17 shells fired from self-propelled artillery systems. Around midnight, the enemy attacked Znob-Novhorodske community. There were 17 incoming shells fired from self-propelled artillery systems.

In the morning, the occupiers started shelling Esman community again. There were 6 incoming shells from barrel artillery.

The Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that two young warriors from Sumy oblast returned home from enemy captivity. Rostyslav Houshan went to the frontline after the liberation of his native town of Trostianets from occupation, during which enemy soldiers drove his family out of the house and settled there themselves. The soldier was captured on September 24 while defending the country in Bakhmut and spent about 4 months in captivity in the temporarily occupied Luhansk oblast. During the exchange of prisoners yesterday, it was also made possible to return defender Maksym Musiienko from Konotop.

Lithuanian charity foundation “Mira Help” provided Sumy volunteers with 1000 kg of paraffin for trench candles. The gift came for Christmas, and raw materials have already been distributed for work.

Sumyoblenergo reported that additional emergency power outages were introduced in Sumy oblast. The decision was made due to exceeding the limit of electricity consumption set for the oblast by the Ukrenergo.

Sumy maternity hospital received a specialized medical car. The assistance was provided by the Charitable Institution “Educational Resources and Technology Training” and the BaLu Charitable Foundation.

Chernihiv oblast

According to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, yesterday, the occupiers opened fire on the border area of Chernihiv oblast from UAVs, mortars, and artillery.

In the afternoon, the russians shelled Halahanivka village of Semenivka community with 7 artillery shells. 6 mortar bombs and one grenade launcher exploded on the territory of Novhorod-Siverskyi oblast, dropped by the occupiers from a drone.

During the attack on Novhorod-Siverskyi community, the russians shelled the cemetery during the burial process. According to the head of the village of Hremyach Andriy Irkha, the mortar bombs exploded 30 meters from the fresh grave. The shells damaged crosses, one of them hit an old grave.

According to the “North” operational command, after 4 pm, the occupiers shelled Vyshenky village in Novhorod-Siverskyi district. There were 15 incoming shells, presumably fired from MLRS.

The Chernihiv Regional Military Administration reported that on January 9, in the afternoon, explosive ordnance disposal was planned in the village of Shestovytsya.

A man lost two fingers on his hand due to careless handling of explosives in Chernihiv oblast. A resident of one of the villages in Chernihiv oblast found a grenade fuse near a shop and brought it home, where the explosion occurred later. The man was taken to the surgical department of Chernihiv district hospital.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

According to Head of the Regional Council Mykola Lukashuk, the enemy shelled Nikopol region twice during the night. The attacks were aimed at Marhanets community, as well as the coastal area of Chervonohryhorivka community.

Vinnytsia oblast

A master class was held for children from Mariupol in the regional center of folk art. 11 children studied traditional Podillia painting. This art therapy event was initiated by volunteers of the NGO “Military Field Art” within the “Good Heart” project.

Poltava oblast

Teachers from Poltava oblast received more than a thousand laptops from UNESCO and Google, under the initiative “A laptop for every teacher”. In addition, teachers can use some features of Workspace for Education for free. This is a set of tools for online communication between students and teachers, which make it possible to organize distance learning and make it more productive.

Cherkasy oblast

Yuliia Norovkova, spokeswoman for the State Emergency Service in Cherkasy oblast, reported that a train with internally displaced persons, 40 people from Donetsk oblast, had arrived in Cherkasy oblast. 

According to Head of the Cherkasy State Administration Ihor Taburets, in Cherkasy region another reinforcement was sent to the defenders towards Bakhmut. Both cars, SUV for paramedics, and  truck with a manipulator for working with equipment, are extremely valuable in combat.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

The situation towards Zaporizhzhia has not changed significantly. The enemy concentrates its main efforts on holding the occupied borders.

Yesterday, the occupiers shelled the settlements of Orikhiv, Huliaipole, Dorozhnianka, Malynivka, Novoandriivka, Luhivske, Shcherbaky, Kamianske, Mali Shcherbaky, Stepove, Zaliznychne, Olhivske, Novodanylivka, Charivne, Mahdalinivka, Mala Tokmachka, Bilohiria, Stepove, Plavni. The police received 6 reports about the destruction of houses (apartments) and infrastructure facilities as a result of shelling by russian military personnel.

The enemy deployed units of the russian guard to maintain military discipline and prevent the spread of panic among the personnel of the occupying forces operating towards Zaporizhzhia. Thus, on January 5, 6 people who expressed the position to surrender the Armed Forces of Ukraine were shot dead near Chystopillia.

The British Ministry of Defense reported that russian troops are preparing for a possible future counteroffensive by Ukraine in Zaporizhzhia or Luhansk oblast. According to the British, in recent weeks, russian troops have expanded defensive fortifications in Zaporizhzhia oblast along the Vasylivka-Orikhiv line and maintain a large grouping of forces in this sector. This shows that the russian command is concerned about the possibility of a major Ukrainian counteroffensive in the south of Ukraine.

According to the Mayor of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov, the russians are strengthening the defense lines in the temporarily occupied territory of Zaporizhzhia oblast. Three lines of fortifications towards Melitopol have been built: from Vasylivka, from Kherson and from Berdiansk. Last week, the russians also started building a defense line from Crimea to Melitopol.

Mykolaiv oblast

On the afternoon of January 9, russian armed forces shelled Ochakiv. The building of the local hospital was damaged. Also, according to the Mykolayiv RMA, yesterday, January 8, at 12:54, the enemy launched artillery strikes on the water area of the Ochakiv community. There are no casualties.

On January 9, air defense forces shot down a russian strike-reconnaissance drone. The drone was shot on the approach to Ochakiv port. According to the military, the drone was neutralized at approximately 9:00 a.m. The downed drone belonged to the operational-tactical level.

Odesa oblast

As of January 9, there is 1 enemy ship in the Black Sea. In the Sea of Azov, the enemy continues to control sea communications, keeping 2 ships on combat duty. There are 9 enemy ships in the Mediterranean Sea, 5 of them carrying Kalibr cruise missiles with a total salvo of 72 missiles.

During the day, 3 vessels passed through the Kerch-Ienikal Strait to the Sea of Azov, and 32 vessels – to the Black Sea in the interests of the russian federation. 10 vessels continued their movement towards the Bosphorus Strait.

Kherson oblast

On January 9, around 12:55, the occupiers shelled Kherson again. An enemy shell hit the area near a supermarket where a man was walking. He died on the spot from a mine-explosive injury. Another woman was injured. According to preliminary information, the enemy launched mortar fire.

At night, russian invaders attacked critical infrastructure facilities in Kherson. Due to the russian attack, a fire broke out at the city’s critical infrastructure enterprise, and a car burned down. Also, as a result of russian shelling, an electrical substation that supplies several large boilers was destroyed. The supply of heat and light in Kherson did not stop.

Yesterday the russian occupiers shelled the territory of the Kherson region 77 times. 3 people were injured. russian troops hit the Beryslav and Kherson regions with MLRS, mortars and artillery. Private houses, farm buildings, garages and cars were damaged by shells, and a warehouse with wheat caught on fire. Shops and residential buildings were significantly damaged  in Beryslav. As a result of the shelling, apartments in high-rise buildings and private houses were destroyed in Kherson, and fires broke out.

The police opened 21 criminal proceedings on the facts of war crimes committed by the russian occupiers in Kherson oblast. There are reports from residents of the temporarily occupied Ivanivka that russian soldiers are moving into the houses of local residents who have moved to the territory controlled by Ukraine. russian soldiers kidnapped a 60-year-old woman and her 32-year-old nephew in Oleshky community. The occupiers also seized two cars from the yard. Currently, nothing is known about the whereabouts of the kidnapped people. 2 men were injured when they blew up on mines in Beryslav region.

The Secuirity Service of Ukraine sent an indictment to the court against a russian serviceman who ordered the torture of Ukrainians in the temporarily occupied Kherson. Investigators have established the identity of the deputy head of the Rostov Guards Department in the Rostov region, police colonel Oleksandr Naumenko with the call sign “Alfa”. The suspect will be tried under the article on violations of the laws and customs of war. The sanction of the article is punishable by up to 12 years of imprisonment.

The first mobile shelter was installed in Kherson. It is a concrete box with a double reinforced frame 4.5 m long, 3.25 m wide and 2.7 m high. It was placed downtown at the scene of the tragedy on December 24. The shelter can accommodate 25 people at the same time.

1,046 electric heaters were brought to Beryslav territorial community as humanitarian aid. They are being distributed to the residents of the community where there is no furnace heating. 100 gas heaters were handed over to Beryslav. 20 heaters were handed over the needs of utility enterprises, another 80 – to the population.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The RMA reported that during the exchange of prisoners of war on January 8, it was possible to free 50 Ukrainians, including a man native of Volyn. This is 44-year-old Roman Hirychuk from Lutsk.

A meeting of the partners of the project Common Cultural Heritage: Revival of Folklore on the Ukrainian-Polish Border within the framework of the Cross-Border Cooperation Program was held. The preparation of the main project activities, including the festival “Ethno-culture – a unifying force”, folklore heritage research, etc were discussed

Border guard from Volyn, Alina Panina, returned to duty. In October, the girl was released from russian captivity, where she was held for five months.

Zakarpattia oblast

The RMA reported that digital modules with the software of ACS Kropyva were sent to soldiers from Zakarpattia to the front line.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

As part of the next exchange of prisoners, two servicemen from Prykarpattia returned home, Bohdan Slobodian (a serviceman of the 18th Marine Infantry Battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was in captivity since March 31) and Volodymyr Ryhlyk (the last time he contacted his relatives on April 7, captured in the area of ​​Izyum, Kharkiv oblast.

The RMA reported that since the war began, 16 people from Prykarpattia have returned home.

Lviv oblast

Since the war began, over 7.7K displaced people from over 20 oblasts of Ukraine have applied to the city support center. Among most common appeals are humanitarian aid, housing and medical services; legal advice, advice on social security and employment.

In the RMA a meeting with the British evangelist, international representative of the Evangelical Faith Church, preacher David Hasavei was held. He said that he plans to make a film about the events in Ukraine to show the world the truth about russia’s military invasion.

Ameeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Turkey to Ukraine Yagmur Güldere was held in the RMA. The Ambassador announced that Turkey plans to open an Honorary Consulate in Lviv.

Prayer for Ukraine was held in Lviv oblast. It was initiated by the Lviv Regional Association Ukrainian Pentecostal Church (UPC) and prayed in all the churches of the Church of the UPC oblast.

Lvivvodokanal received another batch of generators from benefactors from Spain.

The RMA reported that fighters of 24 separate mechanized brigades named after King Danyla received optical equipment worth over UAH 8 million. Servicemen received 1,378K units of food, surveillance and equipment for command posts.

The Lviv defense cluster sent 500 body armor to the fighters defending Bakhmut. Armored vests will be received by soldiers from the 28th separate mechanized brigade named after the Knights of the Winter Campaign.

The RMA reported that in the capital of Iceland an exhibition of posters by Lviv artists about the war in Ukraine on the initiative of the Lviv Municipal Art Center was opened.

Rivne oblast

Head of the Rivne RMA Vitalii Koval is on a trip to the north of the oblast. The leader held a meeting with the military, security forces, heads of district military administrations and communities of Sarna and Varask regions.

In Zarichne region, the mother of the deceased defender handed over the thermal imager to the border guards. She bought it using the funds that the state pays to families of soldiers whose members fell defending the Motherland during a full-scale war. Mrs. Halyna’s son, Evhen Voitovych, defended Mariupol. He fell on May 5 from a russian aerial bomb. When the woman handed over the thermal imager to Evgen’s military brothers, she was awarded the Order of Courage, III degree, awarded to her son posthumously.

The RMA reported that among the 50 dismissed in the next exchange, a combat officer from Rivne oblast, 29-year-old senior lieutenant Petro Dodyk had been in captivity since April.

The RMA reported that in oblast an all-Ukrainian survey on support, rights and needs of IDPs is held.

In Rivne oblast, displaced women who lost their jobs due to the war will be able to become financial literacy trainers for teenage groups. Training will be arranged for them, which will help them acquire such a qualification. This will be possible within the framework of the SoFIA – School of Women’s Interaction project.

Ternopil oblast
