War in Ukraine today: latest news, January 8, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 319th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression.

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 18.00:

The enemy is conducting offensive actions towards Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Lyman, trying to improve its tactical situation on Kupiansk. The invaders focus their futile efforts on capturing Donetsk oblast within the administrative border.

On January 8, 2023, the occupant forces launched 1 missile and 19 air strikes, as well as more than 10 MLRS attacks, including those at civilian infrastructure.

There remains a danger of launching air and missile strikes on critical infrastructure across Ukraine.

Towards Volyn, Polissia, Siversk, and Sloboda, the situation remains stable. Certain units of the armed forces of belarus and russia continue to perform tasks in the areas bordering with Ukraine, yet there are no signs of forming any offensive groups of the enemy there.

At the same time, the enemy is shelling the positions of Ukrainian troops and civilian targets along the entire contact line.

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the vicinities of settlements of Kucherivka (Sumy oblast), Starytsia, Kolodiazne, and Novomlynsk (Kharkiv oblast) came under enemy fire.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy shelled the vicinities of Pershotravneve, Ivanivka (Kharkiv oblast), Stelmakhivka, and Miasozharivka (Luhansk oblast).

Towards Lyman, Makiivka, Nevske, Kuzmyne, Chervonopopivka, and Dibrova (Luhansk oblast) came under fire.

Towards Bakhmut, Berestove, Bilohorivka, Vesele, Rozdolivka, Bakhmut, Bila Hora, Dyliivka, Druzhba, Zalizne, and Niu York (Donetsk oblast) were damaged by enemy shelling.

Towards Avdiivka, the enemy fired at Avdiivka, Nevelske, Marinka, and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast).

Towards Zaporizhzhia, the enemy fired tanks and the entire range of artillery at the vicinities of Dorozhnianka, Charivne, Mali Shcherbaky, and Kamianske (Zaporizhzhia oblast).

Towards Kherson, the occupying forces do not stop shelling the settlements along the right bank of the Dnipro river. Once again, Kherson came under fire from russian multiple launch rocket systems.

To maintain military discipline and prevent any panic sentiments among the personnel of the occupation troops operating towards Zaporizhzhia, the enemy used the units of the russian national guard (rosgvardia). Thus, 6 people willing to surrender to the Ukrainian Defense Forces were reported shot near the settlement of Chystopillia on January 5.

In order to discredit the Ukrainian military leadership, the enemy is sharing disinformation about the preparation of an attack by the Ukrainian Defense Forces on medical institutions in Luhansk oblast, where wounded russian invaders are being treated.

The Ukrainian Air Force launched 10 air strikes on buildups of the enemy, as well as 2 air strikes on the positions of its anti-aircraft missile systems.

Also, our defenders shot down 3 enemy UAVs, probably Orlan, and 3 attack helicopters: 1 Mi-24 and 1 Ka-52, the specific type of another one is being finalized.

Units of rocket troops and artillery of the Ukrainian Defense Forces hit 2 buildups of manpower and 1 warehouse of fuel and lubricants of the occupiers.

The Presidential Office informs that another 50 Ukrainian servicemen were returned home. As a result of another exchange of prisoners, 50 of our soldiers were released. Among them are soldiers from the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Territorial Defense, the NGU, the State Border Guard Service, the Navy, as well as from the USN. 33 officers and 17 privates and sergeants.

Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal says that russia has created the world’s largest minefield in Ukraine. Now it reaches 250 thousand square kilometers. It not only complicates the movement of people, but also causes serious disruptions in agriculture. “We are doing everything possible to ensure that the war ends as soon as possible. To do this, the international community must strictly adhere to sanctions against russia and strengthen them,” he said.
