War in Ukraine today: latest news, January 7, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 318th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

Irrespective of the so-called ceasefire, russian occupiers are shelling the positions of our troops from tanks, mortars and barrels. 

The enemy launched one air strike and 7 MLRS attacks. 

The territory of Ukraine is still under the threat of air and rocket strikes on the critical infrastructure facilities. 

The enemy focuses its efforts of offensive operations towards Bakhmut, Avdiivka, Lyman and tries to improve its tactical position towards Kupiansk. The enemy is on the defensive at the occupied territories of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts. 

The situation has not significantly changed towards Volyn and Polissia. 

Towards Sloboda, the invaders fired at Strilecha, Starytsia, Vovchansk and Orirtseve, Kharkiv oblast. 

Towards Kupiansk and Lyman, the enemy fired at 13 settlements, notably Ivanivka, Dvorichna, Hrianykivka, Kotliarivka, Berestove and Ploschanka, Nevske, Chervonopopivka and Dibrova, Luhansk oblast. 

Towards Bakhmut, the enemy fired at over 15 settlements, namely Verlhniokamianske, Berestove, Vesele, Krasnohorivka Hora, Bakhmut, Klischiivka, Bila Hora, Maiorsk and New York, Donetsk oblast. 

Towards Avdiivka, the enemy fired at Berdychi, Avdiivka, Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Mariinka, Novomykhailivka, Donetsk oblast. 

Towards Novopavlivka, the enemy shelled Velyka Novosilka, Vuhledar, Prechysta, Mykilske, Donetsk oblast. 

Towards Zaporizhzhia, the enemy shelled 16 settlements, notably Vremivka, Donetsk oblast, Olhivske, Poltavka, Malynivka, Dorozhnianka, Zaliznychne, Luhivske, Scherbaky and Stepove. 

Towards Kherson, the civilian infrastructure towards 17 settlements was hit, namely in Respiblokanets, Novoberyslav, Burhunka, Kherson, Ivanivka, Poniativka, Inhulets, Inzhenerne, Mykilske and Prydniprovske. 

Ukrainian TV channels are no longer broadcast in the temporarily occupied territories of Melitopol and Pryazovske, Zaporizhzhia oblast. Only russian TV is broadcast there. 

Aviation of Ukraine launched 21 strikes on the buildup of the enemy’s manpower, as well as 3 hits on anti aircraft and anti missile systems.

Rocket and missile troops of Ukraine hit 4 areas of buildup of manpower and 2 ammunition depots. 

The General Prosecutor’s Office claimed that russia shelled Bakhmut during Christmas ceasefire. A 66-year old man and a 61-year old woman were killed. 13 people were injured with mortar and shrapnel debris. 

According to the deputy head of the Chief Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine Vadym Skibitskyi, russia plans another mobilization wave. In January-February, the invaders can send 500K mobilized soldiers in addition to those 300K already sent last fall. 

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Kupiansk, Strilecha and over a dozen other settlements were attacked. Russia is trying to improve the tactical situation towards Kupiansk. The invaders attacked at 10 settlements.

The invaders continue to terrorize civilians in the border cities. Yesterday the enemy shelled Dvorichna, Kupiansk and Vovchansk. Kotliarivka, Krasne, Kyslivka, Strilecha, Zarichne and other border settlements of Chuhuiv, Kharkiv and Kupiansk regions were also attacked. Residential buildings and outbuildings were damaged as a result of shelling. There were no casualties.

Donetsk oblast

Spokesman for the Eastern Group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Serhii Cherevatyi, reported that Ukrainian troops fully control Soledar. But russian troops have had partial successes in that direction.

Press service of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine said that a group of border guard snipers repelled enemy attacks on Ukrainian positions near Bakhmut, eliminating the commander of the invader group.

Yesterday, russian troops shelled ten settlements. They launched five S-300 missiles at Kramatorsk. A volunteer was killed and two policemen injured in Bakhmut.

Last night, russians continued shelling the central and northern parts of the region.

Towards Donetsk, Kurakhove suffered the most, 1 person was injured, 2 residential apartment buildings and a hospital building damaged. Ostrivske was also attacked on the territory of the community. There were periodic shelling of Maryinka. There were no casualties.

Towards Horlivka, russians killed 2 civilians in Bakhmut and Krasna Hora. In the city, 5 people were injured and 5 private buildings damaged. 1 person was injured in Predtechyne, Kostiantynivka community.

Head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko informed that russians killed 2 civilians in Bakhmut and Krasna Hora. 7 people were injured.

Since the beginning of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, 1292 people were killed and 2823 injured in Donetsk oblast. The exact number of casualties in Mariupol and Volnovakha is impossible to establish.

Luhansk oblast

Yesterday, even during the so-called “Christmas cease-fire” declared by russians. They attacked Bilohorivka, Dibrova, Makiivka and Stelmakhivka. Towards Kupiansk and Lyman. The enemy shelled Dibrova, Makiivka, Ploschanka and Stelmakhivka.

Head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, Serhii Haidai, reported that there is progress but not fast, russians mined the whole Svatove-Kreminna direction. In the temporarily occupied territory of Luhansk oblast near Shchastia, partisans blew up the Luhansk-Lantrativka village railway line used by the invaders to bring equipment and export Ukrainian grain.

According to the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, hospitals in the occupied Luhansk oblast are increasingly refusing to treat patients in critical condition, ambulances only respond to calls from russian troops, 300 children from Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts have been taken to moscow for “treatment”.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Lieutenant General Oleksandr Pavliuk, the Commander of Kyiv Defence Forces, reported that currently there is no possible threat of russian army advancing from the territory of Belarus. The russians have no adequate strength and capabilities to pull such offensive actions. The enemy tries to contain our forces on the northern border to prevent their redeploying to the east. In Kyiv oblast, the situation is under control, trained Ukrainian military groups, who know the terrain well and are constantly training to give a proper response to the enemy, are deployed on the border with Belarus.

Bucha City Council reported that law enforcement officers found an unexploded missile near Blystavytsia village. Experts have identified it as a rocket from BM-27 Urahan MLRS. EOD technicians quickly disposed of the dangerous item.

Kyiv oblast has received over 300K IDPs from Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, and Kherson oblasts since the beginning of the full-scale war. According to the Head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration Oleksiy Kuleba, residents of the oblast have accommodated 78.7K internally displaced persons under the “Shelter” program. Municipal institutions of Kyiv oblast have received 25.8K IDPs, and more than 3 thousand of them are still staying in the places prepared for this purpose.

13 modular towns have been installed in the oblast for temporary accommodation of people who lost their homes: in Brovary, Fastiv, Bucha, Irpin, Vasylkiv, Borodianka, Makariv, Hostomel, Ivankiv, and Kukhari villages. They are primarily intended for large families, people with disabilities, and the elderly.

After the end of hostilities in Kyiv oblast, 78 healthcare institutions damaged as a result of russian aggression in Ukraine have been repaired. Currently, the work to provide medical institutions with equipment and medicines continues in the oblast.

Makariv village head Vadim Tokar reported that Makariv village received assistance from the sister city of Wandlitz (Germany). Mayor of the German city Oliver Borcher personally delivered the cargo. The humanitarian aid includes generators of various capacities, a garbage truck, light poles, technical equipment and a trailer with two large generators.

“Invincibility Yurt” was opened in Bucha with the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Ukraine and Kazakh business owners. During the ceremonial opening of the yurt, Kazakhstan representatives treated the residents of the city with traditional national pilaf, cooked on the open fire, treats, and hot tea.

Zhytomyr oblast

Over three tons of aid from Switzerland arrived to Baranivka. The aid was collected by artists of Zhytomyr Philharmonic Yanina and Oleksandr Yaremchuk together with the Swiss Association “Solidarity without Borders”. Zhytomyr artists held charity concerts in Switzerland, and at the same time Swiss volunteers collected the necessary assistance, sleeping bags for the military, helmets and uniforms for firefighters, toys for children, and medicines.

Despite the war, the traditional folklore festival of carols “Christmas greetings from angels” will be held in Zhytomyr. This year’s novelty will be the opportunity to join caroling in a modern format, watch Christmas movies and buy works of folk artists during the week. The organizers together with the volunteer headquarters of Zhytomyr are preparing sweet gifts for all participants.

Sumy oblast

The head of Sumy Regional Military Administration Dmytro Zhyvytskyi reported in his Telegram channel that during the day on January 6, the russians fired twice at the border area of Sumy oblast. Occupiers used self-propelled artillery to attack Shalyhine community. There were no casualties or damage.

Trostianets Inclusive Resource Centre received a generator, warm blankets, and heaters. This became possible thanks to the cooperation of the Charitable Foundation “Blahomay” and the chocolate factory “Mondelez Ukraine”, which provided assistance to Trostianets children with special educational needs.

Chernihiv oblast

In Chernihiv, a Christmas holiday was arranged for the children of fallen soldiers together with volunteers, representatives of the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration and Regional Council, charitable foundations, and the leadership of one of the military units. According to the organizers, such events should be held regularly. The idea to hold such a holiday was hatched on the eve of the New Year. These are children of fallen heroes. It is planned to hold such events on a regular basis and to create a certain program for the year. The gifts included stuffed toys, power banks, sweets, creative lamps, etc.

Volunteers from all over Ukraine began to rebuild the house of Chernihiv resident Yulia Grebneva, destroyed by Krasnoiarsk plane. On March 5, a russian aircraft was shot down by the Ukrainian military. People from Lviv, Kyiv, Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk, and Cherkasy oblasts came to help a Chernihiv family who lost their home and rebuilt it from scratch. Yulia’s post in the social network, where she asked for help in reconstruction, was seen by the founder of the charity foundation Valeriy Zubkov. Before that, they together with other volunteers rebuilt Yahidne, houses in Ivanivka, Kolychivka and Rivnopillia. The volunteers plan to rebuild the house completely.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

The air defense forces of Dnipropetrovsk oblast shot down a russian drone over Kamianske. There is minor damage.

Belgian shepherd Una serves in the Dnipro brigade of the National guard. At the end of September, it was her who found the dead in the rubble of a private house:  a whole family, a mother, a grandmother and two children, was killed by an enemy  missile attack. Una received the “For devoted service” award.

In regional educational institutions, volunteers set up psychological wartime support centers for children. Psychologists work with children in a playful way and conduct various development classes. Psychological help is also provided to parents of students. Currently, there are 11 centers in the oblast, and four more are to be set up.

Vinnytsia oblast

The team of the Volunteer Headquarters “Ukrainian Team” of Vinnytsia iblast delivered another shipment of humanitarian aid to the frontline areas. Breakfast cereals, noodles and instant porridge, canned vegetables, pasta, fruits and goodies are exactly what helps servicemen in the field.

Poltava oblast

Cherkasy oblast

Dermatomes, skin perforators and wound dressings – such equipment was handed over to Cherkasy medics for the treatment of victims of the war. The Cherkasy Rotari Club brought aid to the burn department of one of the city’s hospitals.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

The situation towards Zaporizhzhia has not significantly changed. Yesterday, January 6, the occupiers shelled the settlements of Huliaipole, Plavni, Kamianske, Stepove, Pavlivka, Dorozhnianka, Shcherbaky, Poltavka, Novoandriivka, Olhivske, Malynivka, Luhivske, Tsvitkovo, Zaliznychne, Mali Shcherbaky, Stepnohirsk. The police received 13 reports about the destruction of houses (apartments) and infrastructure objects as a result of shelling by russian military personnel.

The russian invaders continue to put psychological and physical pressure on the civilian population in the temporarily occupied territories.The russian occupiers forced about 3,000 workers of the Zaporizhzhia NPP to obtain so-called russian passports in Enerhodar, Zaporizhzhia oblast. The Ukrainian hryvnia was taken out of circulation in the city by threatening entrepreneurs with fines and property confiscation. The number of residential premises seized by occupiers and abandoned by forced migrants has increased significantly.

The occupiers have stopped broadcasting all Ukrainian TV channels in the temporarily occupied Melitopol and Priazovske. Only russian TV is broadcasted. This was reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Volunteers built a new house in Zaporizhzhia for two families whose homes were completely destroyed by russian rocket attack in May 2022. It took 5 months to implement the project. The cost of the project, according to preliminary estimates, was UAH 1,500,000. A new house, a duplex designed for two families, was built  using donations and help of sponsors.

Mykolaiv oblast

Yesterday, January 6, at 10:20 a.m., the enemy launched artillery strikes on the water area of Ochakiv community. There were no casualties.The day and night passed relatively calm in Mykolaiv, Pervomaisk, Voznesensk and Bashtanka regions.

Taiwan gave Mykolaiv aid in the amount of 400,000 dollars. This money will be used to purchase the necessary equipment for the heating season, including generators and heaters.

The LUkraine Fund from Luxembourg handed over three ambulances to Mykolaiv oblast as a part of the global campaign “Ukraine is calling”. The regional ophthalmological hospital and the Mykolaiv regional clinical hospital of war veterans received a fully ready-to-use medical transport. Another ambulance was transferred to the needs of the military.

Odesa oblast

As of January 7, the enemy continues to control sea communications in the Sea of Azov, keeping 2 ships on combat duty. There are 9 enemy ships in the Mediterranean Sea, 5 of them are carriers of Kalibr cruise missiles with a total salvo of 72 rockets.

Two anti-ship mines were found and detonated near the coast of Odesa. This was reported by the Naval Forces of Ukraine. Mines drifting in the sea were spotted by an observation post, then a special demining team neutralized them.

Military servicemen of the South Operational Command became blood donors. In total, more than 17 liters were handed over. This was reported by the press service of the South Operational Command. Military donate blood every year.

Kherson oblast

Yesterday, January 6, the russian occupiers shelled the territory of Kherson oblast 39 times. The russian army attacked Kherson 9 times. Shells hit private and apartment buildings, the territory and the building of the fire and rescue unit. Due to the russian shelling, 1 person, a rescuer, was killed, 7 residents were injured.

The police opened 22 criminal proceedings on the facts of war crimes committed by the russian army in Kherson oblast. The occupiers “nationalized” the chain of pharmacies in Nova Kakhovka. The occupiers seized the premises and appropriated all the property. The legal owner estimated damages in the amount of more than 1 million 300 thousand hryvnias.

Yesterday, on January 6, power engineering crews repaired the lines supplying Liubymivka, Vysokopillia, Velyka Oleksandrivka, Beryslav, Chornobaivka, Blahodatne, and Kherson. 26 teams worked on restoration of electricity supply – that’s 106 workers and 37 units of equipment.

33 utility service employees and volunteers worked on restoration of buildings damaged by russian strikes in Kherson. In total, 42 windows were closed with OSB sheets. Work was completed in the regional children’s clinical hospital. About 700 windows were covered.

Kherson oblast constantly receives humanitarian aid from philanthropists and international organizations. Thus, UNICEF delivered a 20 kW generator to restore water supply, sleeping bags, hygiene kits, water containers, lanterns, warm blankets and home repair kits to the Mylove community. Volunteers handed over warm clothes, a generator, heating radiators, food, clothes and shoes to the Chornobaivka community. 180 sets of winter clothes and warm blankets from UNICEF were brought for children from the Kochubeivka community.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Residents of Lyubeshyv region with Polish roots, who rallied in the local branch of the Society of Polish Culture in Volyn, recently received food packages, a Christmas greeting card and a flashlight from volunteers from Krakow.

Zakarpattia oblast

At the beginning of February, IDPs will be able to move into modular houses built in Zakarpattia under the Caritas CF projects and the regional council. In the RMA, a meeting of representatives of the fund and the regional management was held. 

According to a pilot project, one of the medical facilities of Uzhhorod treats complex bone lesions in war victims. RMA noted that within the framework of the initiative, over 1.5K patients in the country will be able to receive implants for osteosynthesis free of charge.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The local fire brigades of Starolysetsk, Oleshiv, Kosiv, Sniativ and Zabolotiv communities received humanitarian aid, namely fire-rescue equipment and clothing, from the United Help Ukraine organization. 36 fire brigades have already been created in Prykarpattia.

Lviv oblast

On the eve of Christmas, Mayor of Lviv, Andrii Sadovyi, visited defenders of Ukraine, who are currently being treated at the UNBROKEN center (the First Medical Association of Lviv).

In three modular towns of Lviv, where about a thousand IDPs live, a traditional Holy Dinner was organized. The displaced people had the opportunity to feast on various Lenten dishes, sing carols and pray for Ukraine.

In Lviv on the initiative of the city of Katowice and the Wolne Miejsce foundation, festive dishes were prepared and served, namely red borsch, dumplings, and Christmas pastries. Residents of Lviv and IDPs staying in Lviv were treated to delicacies.

Rivne oblast

The RMA reported that Rivne oblast has officially sheltered 83K people from the north, south and east of Ukraine.

Ternopil oblast

There are 7 mobile teams of the Red Cross in Ternopil oblast, which provide medical and psychological help to IDPs. Since the war began, 594 trips of mobile brigades have been made to places of stay of IDPs and medical help has been provided to 13 390 persons, including psychological help to 1 627 persons.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

In Shepetivka, a charity auction for the benefit of the Armed Forces was held. About 50 lots were put up for auction, namely, paintings, jewelry, Motanka dolls and other handmade products. In addition, among the offered items were war trophies, which were handed over by fighters from the front. Over UAH 25K donated to purchase a drone for the military.

Chernivtsi oblast

50 generators, medicines, baby food, hygiene products and household chemicals were sent from Chernivtsi to the Hero city of Kherson. Sweets and New Year’s gifts were also given specially for children. It all took two trucks and a trailer.

The City Council of Chernivtsi reported that Chernivtsiteplokomunenergo delivered and installed generators in heating centers.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The Pentagon announced the largest package of military aid to Ukraine in the amount of about $2.85 billion. $2.85 billion is immediate aid and $225 million is funding for further development of Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported that Norway delivered 10K artillery shells to Ukraine.

Germany will send the Patriot air defense system to Ukraine in the first quarter. Training on the Marder machines will take place in Germany and last about eight weeks.

Finland will transfer Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine if other European countries make this decision.

The US announced a new package of sanctions against main Iranian officials and organizations involved in production and transfer of combat drones to russia, as well as because of Tehran’s continued missile programs.

In London, in March, a meeting on war crimes in Ukraine will be held. The participants will listen to Karim Khan, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court. He will inform about the work of the court, as well as tell about the role of the international community in facilitating the work of the court.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with US senators Jack Reed and Angus King. They discussed the current situation on the front line and the risks of possible escalation.

The government of Estonia has allocated over €900K for the dismantling and relocation of soviet-era military monuments.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense of the US in russia, Ukraine and Eurasia, Laura Cooper, stated that despite putin’s declaration of a “Christmas truce”, the russian federation did not stop hostilities on the front during the day of January 6.

The Head of the European Council reacted to the kremlin’s statements regarding the “Christmas cease-fire”. “There is an aggressor: the kremlin. The Ukrainian people are victims. The withdrawal of russian troops is the only serious way to restore peace and security. The announcement of a unilateral cease-fire is as false and hypocritical as the illegal and grotesque annexation and accompanying referenda.” – Charles Michel wrote in Ukrainian on Twitter.

President of Poland Duda in Ukrainian congratulated believers, who celebrate according to the Julian calendar, with Christmas.

The Irish daily newspaper Irish Independent published an editorial Merry Christmas in Ukrainian for citizens of Ukraine living in Ireland.

Pope Francis met with the Mariupol chaplain Henadii Mokhnenko in the Vatican. Together they prayed for Ukraine.

The package of military aid to Ukraine from the US in the amount of about $2.85 billion includes:

  • 50 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles with 500 TOW anti-tank missiles and 250K 25 mm rounds;
  • 100 M113 armored personnel carriers;
  • 55 mine-resistant vehicles (MRAP);
  • 138 HMMWV; 18 155-mm self-propelled howitzers and 18 support vehicles;
  • 70K artillery shells of 155 mm caliber;
  • 500 high-precision 155-mm artillery shells;
  • 1,2K 155-mm shells of the RAAM remote anti-tank mine system;
  •  36 105-mm towed howitzers and 95K 105-mm artillery shells;
  • 10K mortar shells of 120 mm caliber;
  • additional ammunition for HIMARS;
  • air defense missiles RIM-7 Sea Sparrow;
  • 4K Zuni anti-aircraft missiles;
  • approximately 2K anti-tank missiles;
  • sniper rifles, machine guns and cartridges for grenade launchers and small arms;
  • Claymore anti-personnel mines;
  • night vision devices and optics;
  • spare parts and other field equipment.
