War in Ukraine today: latest news, January 22, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 333rd day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6pm:   

The enemy launched 5 air strikes on the positions of the Defense Forces and a missile strike on critical infrastructure in Zaporizhzhia oblast. There were more than 20 attacks from multiple launch rocket systems. 

The territory of Ukraine is still under a threat of air and missile strikes launched by the russian federation on civilian targets.

The enemy focuses its main efforts on conducting an offensive towards Bakhmut. Offensive operations towards Zaporozhzhia, Avdiivka and Lyman were unsuccessful. Towards Kupiansk, Novopavlivka and Kherson, the enemy is on the defensive.

Towards Volyn, Polissia, Siversk and Sloboda, there were no significant changes and no offensive groups of the enemy were found. At the same time,  Studenok, Doroshivka, Boiaro-Lezhachi, Iskrykivshchyna and Popivka of Sumy oblast as well as Veterynarne, Strelecha, Zelene, Vovchansk, Novomlynsk, Dvorichna and Kupiansk in Kharkiv oblast came under mortar and artillery shelling. 

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy shelled Petropavlivka, Tabaivka and Krokhmalne in Kharkiv oblast, as well as Novoselivske and Stelmakhivka in Luhansk oblast.

In Lyman, Makiivka, Ploschanka, Chervonopopivka and Kuzmyne of Luhansk region were shelled.

In Bakhmut, 14 settlements suffered fire damage from enemy artillery, namely Verkhniokamianske, Bilohorivka, Krasna Hora, Bakhmut, Kurdiumivka and Maiorsk of Donetsk oblasts.

In Avdiivka, Avdiivka, Nevelske, Heorhiivka and Marinka came under enemy fire.

In Novopavlivka, Bohoiavlenka and Mykilske of Donetsk oblast were shelled.

In Zaporizhzhia, over 16 settlements were damaged by artillery fire, in particular, Vilne Pole, Vremivka and Novopil in Donetsk and Gulyaipole, Pavlivka, Stepove, Orikhiv and Mala Tokmachka of Zaporizhia region.

Towards Kherson, the occupiers are terrorizing the locals. The areas of settlements of Dudchany, Monastyrske, Antonivka, Berehove, Yantarne, Kherson. The civilians were affected. 

The enemy continues to sustain losses. Trucks and smaller vehicles with wounded russian invaders arrive in Nova Kakhovka hospitals daily. A number of liquidated occupiers is being clarified. 

The Air Defense Forces launched 3 strikes on the buildup of manpower of the occupiers. Units of missile troops and artillery struck 2 buildups of occupiers and 2 ammunition depots.

According to the Ministry of Justice, in 2022, the number of couples willing to get married has increased. Based on the available data, during March-December last year 198 322 couples got married, this is 654 more than the previous year. The data from the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk, Luhansk and Kherson oblasts was not included in this statistics.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, at least 12 settlements were under russian attack yesterday, including Kupiansk, Vovchansk and others. In addition to Zolochiv community, the invaders fired at least 10 settlements during the day.

Head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleh Syniehubov, informed that U.S. Army General Keith Kellogg and a delegation of U.S. military and military experts visited liberated Izium. They discussed further reconstruction of Izium, the security and humanitarian situation in the region. Urgent needs of the region in the military sphere were also considered.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine are using trophy vehicles to help clear a landfill. The landfill, from which russia shelled settlements towards Chuhuiv with Grad MRLs, is being cleared by a road machine abandoned by the invaders near Balakliia. Ukrainian troops are helping to protect the residents of Shevchenkove community from being blown up on ammunition that russian troops may have left behind.

One of the designers, Oleksii Suslin, said that Kharkiv residents have developed a project for an underground bunker capable of withstanding a ballistic missile strike. The developers have already made the frame and are preparing to install communications. The first shelter should be completed in two months.

Director of the Centre for Animal Treatment, Yuliia Tsybulka, informed that 866 dogs and cats were adopted by a utility shelter in Kharkiv in 2022. Homes are being sought for another 450 animals.

The enemy continues to shell civilians in the border cities and villages of Chuhuiv, Kharkiv and Kupiansk.

Head of Zolochiv community, Viktor Kovalenko, reported that in the afternoon, a 67-year-old woman was killed in Petrivka village as a result of shelling. Outbuildings and a residential building were hit. In addition, after 3 pm, the enemy shelled the cemetery in Huriv Kozachok village with tanks. Some graves were damaged.

Vovchansk was also under attack today. A five-storey building and a private house were hit with MRLs. A 49-year-old man was injured. He is hospitalized in moderate condition.

Yesterday Dvorichna, Kupiansk, Veterynarne, Vovchansk and other settlements of Kharkiv oblast were struck. In Kupiansk, a dairy canning factory and two private buildings were damaged. In Vovchansk, private buildings were destroyed. A 46-year-old man was injured and hospitalized in Veterynarne village.

Humanitarian de-mining continues. Yesterday pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service defused 14 explosive ordnance. However, civilians continue to suffer from mines and unexploded ordnance. Yesterday in Kamianka village, Izium district, two men aged 49 and 50 stepped on an unknown explosive device. They were hospitalized in moderate condition.

Donetsk oblast

The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine reported that Ukrainian paratroopers have published a video of how they lured into the trap and eliminated russian soldiers towards Bakhmut.

Press service of Ground Forces of Ukraine informed that troops of the 24th separate mechanized brigade named after King Danylo raised the national flag over the TV tower in Bakhmut and congratulated Ukrainians on Unity Day. 

Since the beginning of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, 1316 people have been killed and 2872 injured in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Volnovakha, in the morning there was artillery shelling of Vuhledar and the outskirts, without casualties.

Towards Donetsk, russians were actively firing at Avdiivka. The night before they fired from Grad MRLs, chaotic shelling continued at night, and in the morning the city was under massive artillery attack. The aftermath is being established. At night, there were periodic shelling of Marinka community. There were no casualties.

Towards Horlivka, in Bakhmut a building was damaged. The situation is tense in Soledar community, shelling of Paraskoviivka and the outskirts of Soledar continues.

Towards Lysychansk, it was noisy in Siversk and Zvanivka communities. There were no casualties.

Head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko, reported that russians injured two civilians in Bakhmut yesterday.

Luhansk oblast

Yesterday Defence Forces units repelled enemy attacks near Novoselivske and Serebrianka forestry. Towards Kupiansk, Novoselivske and Stelmakhivka were under enemy attack. Towards Lyman, russians shelled Chervonopopivka, Dibrova, Kuzmyne, Makiivka, Novoiehorivka, Makiivka, Ploschanka and Serebrianka forestry.

According to the head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, Serhii Haidai, there are tense hostilities, but the situation is under control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He noted that Luhansk oblast is being de-occupied step by step.

Referring to the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, elections in the so-called “Luhansk People’s Republic” will not be held under the threat to people’s lives, but a pseudo-referendum is possible.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Former Prime Minister of Great Britain Boris Johnson came again to Kyiv and met with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He also visited Bucha and Borodianka, destroyed settlements where terror and intimidation of the civilian population reigned during the russian occupation.

Commander of the group of forces and defense of Kyiv Alexander Pavliuk has informed that regular training of units from the group took place on the northern border. The personnel worked out the ability to identify and destroy the tactical groups of the enemy by block and defeat them with tank units, strike groups equipped with MaxxPro APCs and infantry units.

A russian soldier who raped and abused civilians in Kyiv oblast will be tried. As reported in the Prosecutor General’s Office, the accused is a 20-year-old soldier of the 15th Separate Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade of the russian federation from the village of Novokhopersk, Voronezh oblast. In the spring of 2022, he broke into the house of a nurse in one of the occupied villages of the oblast. In front of the woman’s eyes, the man abused her husband, and the next day he raped her, threatening her with a gun.

The head of Kyiv RMA Oleksiy Kuleba said that over 5,700 objects damaged due to hostilities have already been restored in Kyiv oblast. Recently, a 16-apartment building was renovated on Vodoprovidna street in Bucha, where windows were replaced, roofs repaired, ceilings renewed and attics insulated.

Over the course of three months, 78 private houses are planned to be renovated on Vokzalna Street in Bucha, 11 of which are being built from scratch with the support of benefactors. This is the street, the photo of which went around the world, with a broken column of russian equipment.

The head of the village of Makarov Vadym Tokar reported that residents of Makariv community, whose houses were damaged due to russian aggression, received building materials for reconstruction from the UN fund. 48 families of the community received slate, cement, lumber, doors, bricks, boards, blocks, metal tiles, insulation and other building materials for reconstruction of their homes.

The “Best Friends” animal shelter in Kyiv oblast will be rebuilt. During the full-scale invasion, the shelter, located in the village of Fasova, was hit twice by russian missiles and artillery. Until February 24, more than 1,300 animals lived in the shelter, currently the owners are trying to place about 970 wards there. Almost 2 million hryvnias for reconstruction were provided as part of the Tails Changes project, launched by Suziria Group and UAnimals.

Zhytomyr oblast

Korosten geriatric boarding house welcomed refugees from Kherson. People from territorial centers of the Korabelnyi and Suvorivskyi district found shelter there.

At a charity event at the Romanivka Art School, funds were collected for a car for Ukrainian defenders. A creative evening of the poetess Iryna Topinko took place there, whose poetic lines were accompanied by Angela Talko playing the piano. More than 20,000 hryvnias were collected during the atmospheric event. They will be transferred to the charity fund “Svitlitsia dobra” to purchase a vehicle for defenders from Romanivka community.

Sumy oblast

The head of Sumy oblast Dmytro Zhivytskyi reported that russians launched over 115 strikes on the border of Sumy oblast. The communities of Esman, Seredina-Buda, Nova Sloboda, Bilopillia and Krasnopillia were shelled. The enemy attacked using mortars and artillery. The enemy opened machine gun fire on the territory of Shalyhine community.

A 17-year-old boy was injured due to shelling of the village of Studenok of Esman community. He received multiple shrapnel wounds and a contusion. One house was completely destroyed due to a direct hit by a russian mine, about 10 houses and electric lines were damaged. In one of the households, a cow and a small calf were killed.

The enemy continues shelling the Sumy border. During the day, the russians attacked the communities of Nova Sloboda and Shalyhine using mortars and artillery. In total 16 explosions were recorded.

The mayor of Bilopillia Yuriy Zarko reported that the Czech city of Černošice handed over quadcopters to the military of Bilopillia. In total, the Černošice community collected 700,000 hryvnias, used to purchase aid, drones, generators, diesel heaters and thermal underwear. Earlier, an ambulance vehicle was transferred from Czech partners for Bilopillia.

Trostianets city council reported that the French city of Gennvilliers invited a group of children from the community to take part in an excursion-tourist trip. Children who suffered the most during the hostilities, whose property was destroyed or damaged, whose close relatives died during the occupation, children of the Armed Forces servicemen, will go on vacation.

Chernihiv oblast

The Nizhyn City Council reported that the heads of the cities, Oleksandr Kodola and Mariusz Szewczyk, signed a Partnership Agreement during the working visit of the delegation from Nizhyn to Dembyca (Poland).

Forest farms of Chernihiv oblast sent thousands of cubic meters of wood, 7.2 thousand cubic meters of round timber, almost two thousand cubic meters of sawn timber and 2 thousand cubic meters of firewood, to construct fortification structures. Foresters constantly help the Ukrainian military with fuel and lubricants, spare parts and food. Recently defenders were given a bathhouse on wheels to warm them up, treat colds and flu.

The BAT-2 military bulldozer, which at the beginning of the full-scale invasion blocked the occupiers’ road to Nizhyn and stopped the invasion of enemy troops on the bridge in Khvylivka, was taken to the engineering support center for repair work. It stood across the bridge structure for almost 9 months. In Nizhyn, they plan to install BAT-2 on a pedestal as a symbol of Nizhyn’s protection.

Residents of Chernihiv oblast, who suffered the most during hostilities, will receive non-food humanitarian aid kits. These are residents of modular buildings, communities with significant destruction of private housing, and internally displaced persons. The assistance will be provided by the international organization “Global Communities” as part of the CLEAR program, and financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The “ONUKA. The soul of the people” video work, presented for the Memorial Day of the victims of the Holodomor, was recognized at the international festival “International sound video awards 2022/2023” in Prague. The project won in the “Best Music Video Director” category. The video was filmed in Chernihiv oblast, in the church destroyed during the hostilities of the village of Lukashivka.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

According to Head of the regional council Mykola Lukashuk, the enemy shelled Marhanets community with heavy artillery in Nikopol region three times at night. Russian occupiers fired about three dozen shells from heavy artillery. As a result of the attack, the lyceum, industrial enterprise, pumping station, administrative building, and power grids were mutilated. Currently, about half a thousand consumers are without electricity in one of the villages due to shelling. 

In Dnipro, near the flagpole with the flag of Ukraine, a “chain of unity” was organized. About a hundred people took part in the action. They were holding signs with the names of Ukrainian cities, including the de-occupied ones and those currently under occupation.

Vinnytsia oblast

The psychological short film “The Sixth Seal” was shot in Vinnytsia, whose director is Heorgii Biloshytskyi. The film is based on real events and tells the story of a woman whose life changes after the airstrike on July 14, 2022.  

Poltava oblast

Volunteers together with Poltava RMA handed over four more cars to the defenders: two buses and two cars. Two vehicles have already been sent for the front line.

Cherkasy oblast

More than half a hundred “Safety Classes” are planned to be opened in Cherkasy oblast. “Safety classes” are opened jointly with the Main Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. Everything is needed to easily assimilate information that will help save life.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, over the past day, January 21, the enemy fired 172 times at Zaporizhzhia communities. 21 settlements were damaged, 36 buildings were destroyed. There were no casualties. 

Mykolaiv oblast

On Sunday, January 22, a delegation of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Ukraine, headed by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, arrived in Mykolaiv. During the visit, Vitaliy Kim, Head of Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, and Caroline Lindholm Billing, Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Ukraine, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to provide support to war victims and IDPs in Mykolaiv oblast. The parties will cooperate and coordinate efforts to provide construction materials for repairing damaged housing, install and equip modular houses, address the needs of victims and internally displaced persons through legal and psychosocial support, etc.

Odesa oblast

According to Odesa Regional Military Administration, since the beginning of russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, Odesa volunteers, members of the City of the Future NGO, have been collecting plastic lids for an ambulance for the Ukrainian Armed Forces as part of the Plastic Saves Lives project. 11,000 kg of plastic lids have been collected, which is more than 5.5 million pieces. The plastic collected in 8 cities and 40 towns of Ukraine was sorted and processed by special organizations into household items. The funds raised were used to buy a new, modern ambulance which will be sent to the frontline. 

Kherson oblast

According to the head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration Yaroslav Yanoshevych, on January 21, russian invaders fired 49 times on the territory of Kherson region. Occupiers attacked the region with artillery, MLRS, mortars and tanks. The russian army shelled Kherson 13 times, firing at residential areas of the city. The enemy shells hit a state-owned enterprise, a river port, a bakery, and the houses of the townspeople.  3 people sustained injuries of varying severity.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

In the village of Hirka Polonka of the Boratyn community, volunteers weave winter helmets to camouflage the military. The camouflage ammunition began to be produced in the summer. According to the volunteers, five skeins of white or gray threads from old clothes are needed for one helmet. Not only residents of the surrounding villages, but also people from other communities join the volunteers working without days-off.

Zakarpattia oblast

The soldiers of the 128th brigade were given a basic KrAZ-255 special vehicle, which was once part of the military pontoon-bridge fleet. In the conditions of hostilities, units of engineering troops use pontoon-bridge parks to overcome water obstacles with equipment. At the same time, the KrAZ-255 base can serve as a platform for installing anti-aircraft systems and missiles.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The Ukrenergo dispatcher proved somewhat higher limits than on the previous day. The night limit for the oblast is 244.26 MW, the daily limit is 284 MW.

President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, awarded orders For Courage of the III degree (posthumously) to 6 servicemen of the 102nd Territorial Defense Brigade from Ivano-Frankivsk.

The city council reported that forty children of defenders of the Ivano-Frankivsk territorial community went on vacation to the Hungarian city of Debrecen. An interesting recreation program will last for week.

Lviv oblast

The largest number of elderly patients was evacuated from Kherson to Lviv oblast. A special train brought them to Lviv oblast. The Lviv Regional Center for Emergency Aid and Disaster Medicine and their colleagues from Poland met the patients and sent for further treatment at regional medical facilities. For this, 26 ambulances were involved. The evacuated people are safe and receiving all necessary assistance.

As of today, 324 Invincibility Centers have been deployed in Lviv oblast – 255 arranged by local authorities (including 2 voluntary fire brigades) and 69 by the State Emergency Service (57 on the basis of State Emergency Service facilities and 12 mobile points from the State Emergency Service).

Rivne oblast

In Rivne oblast, 9-year-old student Marta Pylypchuk sells paintings to support the Ukrainian military. Now her works are in various cities of Ukraine, as well as in Germany and Turkey. In total, the girl managed to earn over UAH 50K, which she donated to the needs of the Armed Forces.

Ternopil oblast

In Ternopil oblast, there are 135 locations where people can warm up, charge their devices and drink a hot drink, 72 of which were deployed by the RMA and communities; 33 – by the State Emergency Service; 17 – by the responsible business; 12 – by petrol stations and Nova Poshta; and 1 – at the Ternopil Railway Station.

Pavlo Pavlusiak, a defender from the village of Chaichyntsia, received a car to carry out combat missions during the war. The car itself was bought by a fellow soldier who now lives in Britain. Local residents collected $600 to deliver the car to Ukraine.

The Tent of Invincibility was set up in the yard of the Caritas Charitable Fund of Ternopil. Here, those in need can warm up and receive a hot lunch.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The RMA reported that 6,8K food kits were handed over to IDPs of the Kamianets-Podilskyi regiont.

The RMA reported that a commission was created to determine damage and losses caused to the territories and objects of the nature reserve fund in the oblast as a result of the aggression of the russian federation.

Chernivtsi oblast

Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine for Reintegrated Territories, Iryna Vereshchuk, visited Chernivtsi oblast. She came to find out how many IDPs Bukovyna is still ready to accept.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The Office of the President reported that the next meeting in the Rammstein format, which is scheduled for mid-February, will be devoted to aviation.

Minister of Defense Oleksii Reznikov announced that  British Sea King combat helicopters arrived in Ukraine.

Finland froze €187 million of russian assets according to sanctions against russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

Cyprus announced its readiness to send Soviet-made T-80U tanks to Ukraine, but only in exchange for German Leopards.

Head of the Defense Committee of the Bundestag, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmerman, criticized Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, for refusing to grant permission for the transfer of tanks to Ukraine.

Heads of foreign ministries of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania called on Germany to immediately give Ukraine Leopard tanks. The joint statement was published on Twitter by Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, Urmas Reinsalu.

Prime Minister of Poland, Morawiecki, stated that his country is ready to create a coalition to provide Ukraine with Leopard tanks, even if Germany does not decide on their supply.

Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Maris Kuchinskis, announced that Latvia will not let russians fleeing mobilization into the country.

President Maia Sandu, stated that Moldova may abandon neutrality in favor of joining NATO.

Ukraine received the two highest awards of the Coin of the Year 2023 international competition. The designer of one of the winning coins was Oleh Shupliak, a native of the Berezhy region.
