It has been the 332nd day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6pm:   

There remains a threat of strikes using ground-based and air-launched missiles and kamikaze drones throughout Ukraine.

The enemy carried out 26 air strikes and 15 attacks from multiple launch rocket systems. 

The enemy does not abandon its aggressive plans, focusing its main efforts on attempts to fully occupy Donetsk oblast. There were unsuccessful offensive operations towards Avdiivka. The enemy continues attempts to attack towards Bakhmut and Zaporizhzhia, increasing the intensity of the use of aviation. In other areas, the invaders are defending.

No offensive groups were found towards Volyn, Polissia, Siversk and Sloboda. Units of territorial troops are moving to belarus. The deadline for checking the combat readiness of the Armed Forces of belarus has been once again extended – until January 30th. There is a threat of provocative  armed incidents on the border. 

The Republic of belarus continues to support russian aggression. In addition to joint exercises, russian units are being trained on the territory of belarus.

The enemy does not stop artillery shelling along the entire contact line. The enemy’s mortar and artillery fire affected the settlements of Bachivsk and Volfine, Sumy oblast, as well as Veterynarne, Kozacha Lopan, Strelecha, Krasne, Staritsia, Ohirtseve, Vovchansk, Budarky, Kolodiazne and Novomliynsk in Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, Synkivka, Kucherivka, Pishchane, Krokhmalne, Novoselivske, Stelmakhivka, Vyshneve and Pershotravneve of Kharkiv oblast and Novoselivske and Stelmakhivka in Luhansk oblast were shelled from tanks, mortars, barreled and rocket-propelled artillery.

Towards Lyman, the enemy shelled Novoiehorivka, Makiivka, Ploshchanka, Nevske, Chervonopopivka, Dibrova and Serebriansk forestry in Luhansk oblast.

Towards Bakhmut, the positions of our troops in more than 25 settlements suffered fire damage, namely Verkhniokamianske, Vyimka, Bilohorivka, Blahodatne, Bakhmut, Klishchiivka, Bila Hora, Diliivka, Druzhba and Zalizne of Donetsk oblast. 

Towards Avdiivka, Avdiivka, Vodiane, Pervomaiske, Nevelske, Heorhiivka, Marinka and Novomykhailivka in Donetsk oblast came under enemy fire.

Towards Novopavlivka, Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva and Velyka Novosilka of Donetsk oblast were shelled.

Towards Zaporizhia, more than 25 settlements were damaged by artillery fire, namely Vremivka and Novopil in Donetsk oblast and Olhivske, Huliaipole, Charivne, Novodanylivka, Kamianske and Plavni in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Towards Kherson, the occupiers again fired from the entire spectrum of artillery at Vesele of Zaporizhzhia oblast and Kozatske, Novoberyslav, Tiahynka, Tokarivka, Sadove, Naddniprianske and Kherson.

The enemy strengthens control over civilians in the temporarily occupied territories of the Kherson region. In particular, it is trying to create a database of places of residence of civilians, threatening to cut electricity. Under the guise of implementing an ‘energy saving program’, the so-called ‘authorities’ make people sign an ‘act confirming the actual place of residence of a citizen’.  

Aviation of the Defense Forces inflicted 13 strikes on enemy buildups and 2 – on the positions of its air defense system. Our artillery also struck a buildup of the invaders’ manpower and equipment.

Head of the RMA Dmitry Zhyvytskyi reports that Ukrainian border guards prevented a russian sabotage and reconnaissance group from crossing the border in Sumy oblast. On January 20, at about 5 am, a group of six people tried to move from the territory of the russian federation to the Yunakivka community.

Representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense Andrii Yusov says that escalating the topic of the threat of an attack on Ukraine by belarus is a russian information and psychological operation. There are certain facts claiming that there is no threat from the territory of belarus. He noted that if the situation changes, then the relevant information will appear.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the enemy fired at least 18 settlements in Kharkiv oblast with tanks, mortars, cannon and rocket artillery.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, informs that the security situation in Kharkiv oblast was discussed at a meeting with US Army General Keith Kellogg, US national security and intelligence expert Robert McCreary and other US military and experts. 

In the morning, Vovchansk was shelled. An enemy shell hit a private house. A woman in her 60s was killed. A 45-year-old woman and a 7-year-old girl were wounded and hospitalized. 

The prosecutor’s office reports that in the afternoon, the russian military struck Veterynarne in the Derhachiv community. A local resident was wounded as a result of the shelling.

The Derhachiv City Council reported that ammunition left by the occupiers was found in Tokarivka. 110 shells and powder charges were hidden by the russian military in the cellar of local residents.

The enemy continues to terrorize the civilian population of Kharkiv oblast in the border settlements of Kupiansk, Chuhuiv and Kharkiv regions.

Yesterday, the occupiers fired at Vovchansk, Kupiansk, Strilecha, Vilcha, Ohirtseve and other settlements with cannon and rocket artillery, tanks and mortars. The town of Vovchansk in the Chuhuiv region suffered the most from the shelling. 

In addition, a 71-year-old man was wounded in Vovchansk yesterday. He is hospitalized in moderate condition. A civilian man of 27 years old was also wounded in the village of Kivsharivka, Kupyansk region. He is in moderate condition. 

Donetsk oblast

The russian army conducted 28 attacks in Donetsk oblast, shelling 13 settlements. As a result of the shelling, 20 residential buildings, a school, kindergartens, a health center, an outpatient clinic, shops, a trade pavilion, heating networks, a gas pipeline, an outbuilding, some cars, and a road were destroyed and damaged.

Serhii Cherevatyi, Spokesman for the Eastern Group of the Ukrainian Armed Forces informs that the russian army fired towards Bakhmut 272 times over the last day.

The State Border Guard Service informs that russian troops have renewed their attempt to break through the defense line near Bakhmut. Border guards stopped the advance of russian attack aircraft. They retreated with losses, including 9 killed and approximately 17 wounded.

There were no casualties towards Donetsk. The night before, russian proxies shelled Kurakhove, hitting two private houses and a shopping pavilion, and damaging 6 high-rise buildings. 

Vitalii Barabash, Head of the Avdiivka MCA, said that in Avdiivka, chaotic shelling continued at night, and in the morning, the city was shelled with 4 Grad rocket launchers. Occupiers fired at Avdiivka with cannon and tank artillery about 20 times over the last day.

Towards Horlivka, in Bakhmut, russians hit a multi-storey building, killing 2 people and wounding 3. In Niu York, 3 buildings were damaged. Kostiantynivka suffered 2 missile attacks a kindergarten and a college were damaged. Constant shelling continues in Paraskoviivka of the Soledar community.

Towards Lysychansk, a multi-storey building in Lyman and 3 private houses in Droisheve were damaged. The shelling of Torske and Zarichne, as well as Siversk, continues, with no casualties.

Head of Kostiantynivka MVA, Oleksiy Roslov, informs that after 10 p.m. the day before, russian troops shelled the starosta district of Bilokuzmynivka in the Konstantynivka community. The russian army fired two S-300 missiles, which hit near a kindergarten. The shelling resulted in no deaths or injuries, but there is destruction.

According to Pavlo Kyrylenko, Head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, it became known about 3 residents of Donetsk oblast killed by russians: 2 in Bakhmut and 1 in Zhelanne. Another 4 people were wounded in the oblast. 

Luhansk oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Ukrainian Armed Forces repelled enemy attacks in the areas of Novoselivske, Ploshchanka and Chervonopopivka. Towards Kupiansk, Novoselivske and Stelmakhivka came under fire from russian tanks, mortars, cannon and rocket artillery. Towards Lyman, the enemy fired at Novoiehorivka, Makiivka, Nevske, Ploshchanka, Holykove, Chervonopopivka, Kreminna and Dibrova with all available firepower.

More than 300 wounded russian soldiers are being treated in the surgical department of the city hospital in Starobilsk, Luhansk oblast, occupied since 2022, .

Serhii Haidai, Head of the Luhansk Military Regional Administration, reports that heavy fighting is taking place near Kreminna. The russians are sending prisoners to attack even through minefields. Additional reserves are sent there because they realize that the front line is approaching Kreminna. The russians are using the Lysychansk refinery as a foothold.

According to the Luhansk Military Administration, the so-called ‘LPR’ adopted a law on a referendum and is forming the first composition of the election commission after two pseudo-votes. Rescuers are being taken to the occupation army in Alchevsk. The mobilized russians are not supplied with food or equipment.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Joint Forces Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in Kyiv oblast, our military has conducted a battle exercise aimed at counter-offensive actions against enemy airborne assault and elimination of sabotage and reconnaissance groups in the urban environment. A joint military training was conducted in the Chornobyl zone to protect an important state-owned critical infrastructure facility.

In Kyiv, the Ukrainian House hosted a farewell ceremony for the leadership and employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs who died in Brovary as a result of a helicopter crash. In the center of Kyiv, traffic on some streets was stopped for the funeral convoy. In total, more than 400 people were in and around the Ukrainian House: military, rescuers, civil servants, top officials, children, and citizens of the country.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the commander of a russian tank from Buryatia, who threatened to kill a local resident of Kyiv oblast and robbed him, will be put on trial. The Zhytomyr Regional Prosecutor’s Office sends to court an indictment on violation of laws and customs of war. The russian military officer faces up to 12 years in prison.

Utility workers who helped organize garbage collection in Kherson returned to the capital. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klytschko, in 3 days, the capital’s utility services removed 480 m3 of household and 100 m3 of construction waste from Kherson by dump trucks. Also, Kyiv handed over 5 passenger buses, 4 trucks, a garbage truck, an excavator, 2 ambulances, 11 generators, medical equipment, and humanitarian aid to the previously occupied city.

In 2022, UAH 42 million was allocated to repair healthcare facilities damaged as a result of hostilities in Kyiv. According to the Kyiv City State Administration, about twenty medical institutions in the capital were renovated last year.

According to the acting head of the Borodianka community, Heorhiy Yerko, reconstruction works have started on Central Street in Borodianka. It suffered significant damage during the temporary occupation by the russian troops. According to him, during the occupation of the community and as a result of hostilities, 11 apartment buildings, 358 private houses, 2 bridges over the Zdvyzh River and almost all of Borodianka’s infrastructure were completely destroyed. Currently, about 50 roofs on apartment buildings have been repaired and windows are being installed.

The National Technical University of Ukraine – Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute – together with CLUST is implementing a project to create innovative Smart Shelter – CLUST Space shelters. The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine reported that the aim of the project is to upgrade existing shelters and turn them into safe, innovative educational hubs that will operate on a permanent basis and bring together creative youth both in times of danger and in times of peace.

A mental health recovery program for war victims was presented in Kyiv. The Lisova Polyana Center will work with veterans and their families, as well as with people who survived captivity and torture. The presentation was held within the framework of the National Program of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support.

Kyiv became the leader among Ukrainian cities in terms of the number of place names renamed over the past year. These are the results of a study conducted by Transparency International Ukraine, which examined the process of de-russification and decommunization in Ukraine. The research data was published on the website of the Kyiv City State Administration.

Zhytomyr oblast

The Department of Transport and Communications of the Zhytomyr City Council reported that due to electricity shortage, trams in Zhytomyr will not be running for some time. Tram service in Zhytomyr was suspended on December 16, 2022. The trams were put in storage after inspection, and drivers and mechanics were put on idle time.

Family of IDPs from Kharkiv rescued 17 horses from shelling and reopened their equestrian school in Troianiv village near Zhytomyr. According to Anna Shulha, the owner of the Happy Horseshoe stable, before russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, she ran a children’s equestrian school in Kharkiv with nearly two dozen horses, and for 15 years she had been engaged in equine therapy and training professional riders.

Sumy oblast

According to Head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration Dmytro Zhyvytskyi, the russians shelled Bilopillia and Esman communities with mortars. In total, there were 27 incoming shells. 

On January 20, at about 5 a.m., a russian sabotage and reconnaissance group attempted to cross the border in Sumy oblast. A group of six people tried to move from the territory of the russian federation to the Yunakivka community. Dmytro Zhyvytskyi said that when the Ukrainian military opened fire, the russian soldiers fled.

The enemy continues shelling the border areas of Sumy oblast. According to the ‘North’ Operational Command, in the morning, there were 6 mortar bombs fired in the area of Bachevsk.

As a result of russian mortar attacks on the territory of the Esman community, a 17-year-old boy was injured – he was taken to the Hlukhiv hospital with numerous shrapnel wounds where doctors are fighting for his life. According to the Sumy Regional Military Administration, 10 mortar bombs exploded on the streets of Studenok village, near civilian homes. The house where the injured boy was staying was completely destroyed.

Chernihiv oblast

Serhii Vasylyna, Prosecutor of Chernihiv oblast, reported that more than 5,800 civilian infrastructure facilities, including 34 medical institutions, have been completely or partially destroyed in the oblast. Law enforcement officers record the crimes of the russian military to demand reparations from russia after our victory for the damage caused.

As of the end of 2022, the Prosecutor’s Office of Chernihiv oblast has submitted 13 acts against 17 russian servicemen to the court. Two servicemen were sentenced to 10 and 8.5 years and transferred to a penal colony. Four more servicemen were sentenced in absentia. The involvement of 14 servicemen in crimes committed in Yahidne village, where 10 civilians died due to inhumane conditions in a concentration camp, was revealed.

A family that lost their home due to russian aggression received a modular house in Chernihiv oblast. The assistance was provided by Eldorado together with Tera Monada as part of the Brick for a Family charity project. The retailer paid half of the cost of the modular house, and the other half was raised through donations from customers. The charity project will last until the end of 2023.

In the Nizhyn Youth Center, a creative workshop Heart of the World and coffee art therapy were held. Also, 100 trench candles for Ukrainian defenders and a “Glove of Ukraine” made of polymer clay were manufactured there. The events were held within the framework of the UNICEF Ukraine program to support families with children affected by the war.

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

According to Head of the regional council Mykola Lukashuk, the enemy shelled the Myrhorod community in the Nikopol region at night. The russian occupiers fired about a dozen shells from heavy artillery.

Vinnytsia oblast

Specialists of the Veteran Hub in Vinnytsia provide psychological assistance to defenders’ wives. During the sessions, women receive help on coping with anxiety, worry and fears.

The Vinnytsia enterprise FRENDT has developed a technology that will help search for mines in the field. The process takes place remotely with the use of agricultural machinery – tractors. According to Deputy Mayor of Vinnytsia Andriy Ocheretnyi, metal detectors are attached to the car on both sides. They monitor possible danger and immediately transmit information to the control room. If mining is detected, special equipment will stop moving.

Poltava oblast

According to Dmytro Lunin, Head of the Poltava Regional State Administration, 61 dental offices and dental offices in 27 territorial communities of the Poltava Oblast will receive consumables and medical supplies to treat local residents and internally displaced persons. The assistance within the Common Help UA project, launched by Astarta-Kyiv and the CF Believe in Yourself,  has  recently been handed over by benefactors from the USA.

Cherkasy oblast

According to Head of the Cherkasy State Administration, Ihor Taburets, four more cars – all-wheel drive SUVs – were sent to the front. They were serviced due to a mandatory requirement for any equipment  transferred to defenders.

In the Cherkasy  YA – Mariupol center, internally displaced persons are given warm sets for free, including a heater, pillows, blankets, bed linen and towels.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to  the National Police, the russians launched 113 attacks on Hulyaypole, Orekhove, Zaliznychne, Tavriyske, Zatysh, Poltavka, Novoandriivka, Preobrazhenka, Novopokrovka, Novodanylivka, Malynivka, Mala Tokmachka, Bilohiria, Olhove, Stepne, Plavni, Kamianske, Malyi Shcherbak in the Vasylivka region. The enemy is attacking with cannon and heavy artillery, multiple rocket launchers. There were 18 reports of the destruction of civilian houses (apartments) and infrastructure as a result of shelling by the russian military. An elderly woman was killed.

In an interview with the American TV channel Fox News, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said that he expects the organization’s experts to be present at the Zaporizhzhia NPP for a long time. The IAEA Director General also noted that the situation around Zaporizhzhia is getting worse. He emphasized that the most important thing is to take measures to protect the nuclear facility, but the progress towards this goal was “not as fast as [he] expected.”

Mykolaiv oblast

January 20, the enemy launched artillery strikes on the waters of the Ochakiv community.  There were no casualties. This was reported by the Mykolaiv Military Command.

According to Head of the Mykolaiv Regional Council, Hanna Zamazeieva, a car hit a mine in the Vitovsky region of Mykolaiv oblast, injuring four people, including a baby. 

According to  the Ministry of Reintegration, a working meeting between a representative of the Ministry of Reintegration and the Chief Technical Advisor of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) was held in Mykolaiv. During the meeting, the UN representative announced the intention of this international organization to allocate about $ 4 million for the purchase of mechanized demining equipment and training of operators of such equipment. In the future, the demining equipment will be used to clear the territories of Mykolaiv oblast contaminated with explosive ordnance.

Odesa oblast

According to Spokesman of the Odesa Regional Military Administration Serhii Bratchukon, on January 20, stormy weather brought another drifting mine to the coast of Odesa oblast. A special unit of the Ukrainian Navy successfully neutralized the dangerous find.

On January 21, in Odesa, the Ukrainian Women’s Guard in cooperation with the Odesa Medical College conducted a training course for civilians on first aid in emergency conditions. The instructors were Vadym Reshetov, a 1st category lecturer, chairman of the cycle commission of surgical disciplines, and Serhii Huzun, a highest category lecturer of anesthesiology and resuscitation. The participants learned about the general provisions of desmurgy and types of bleeding, rules of resuscitation and transport immobilization.

Kherson oblast

According to the Kherson Regional Military Administration, on January 20, the russians fired 36 times at Kherson oblast, using artillery, MLRS and mortars. The occupiers hit Kherson 11 times. Residential neighborhoods came under attack. Four civilians were injured. Two of them blew up on an enemy mine. 

According to Yaroslav Yanoshevych, Head of the Kherson Regional Water Administration, USAID delivered 5 powerful 35 kW generators to the Novooleksandrivska community. All of them will be installed at the wells that provide centralized water supply in the community.

According to Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Kyrylo Tymoshenko, on January 21, the largest medical evacuation of patients from Kherson to Lviv oblast took place thanks to Doctors Without Borders. The evacuation involved 26 ambulances. All the evacuees are elderly people from medical institutions in Kherson. 

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The mother of the Hero, killed in the war, decided to donate UAH 100K to the needs of the Armed Forces. Maria Ivanivna from the village of Horodok, in the Lutsk region, donated funds to volunteers to bring victory closer.

Zakarpattia oblast

On the 15th, the separate mountain-assault battalion operating as part of the 128th separate mountain-assault Zakarpattia brigade received a high-terrain off-road vehicle with the possibility of mounting a machine gun and a spacious luggage compartment. A Mitsubishi L 200 car  was purchased in Great Britain by a patron from abroad.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The dispatcher of Ukrenergo proved somewhat lower limits than the previous day. The night limit for the oblast is 239.6 MW, the daily limit is 267.6 MW.

The RMA reported that President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, awarded orders For Courage of the III degree (posthumously) to 6 servicemen of the Ivano-Frankivsk 102nd Territorial Defense Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Lviv oblast

Over UAH 26 million was raised for repair work, the purchase of furniture, appliances and other household items for IDPs in 2022. Of these, over UAH 15.2 million came from the regional budget and UAH 11.4 million from charitable aid.

From February 24, the defenders received UAH 185 million from the taxes of Lviv residents. This covers tailoring uniforms, purchasing back-up power generators, means of communication, body armor, technical and operational support, fuel, etc.

In the Stryi region, a psychoneurological-type assisted living facility for children was renovated. The total cost of repair works is over UAH 26 million. Previously, 145 students and employees of the Zaporizhia Regional Specialized Children’s Home Sonechko were received here.

1K sets of winter uniforms, namely, jackets, pants, fleeces, thermal underwear, hats and scarves, were sent from Lviv. The aid was provided within the framework of the Program for Support of Voluntary Formations of the Lviv City Territorial Community.

Rivne oblast

Sappers of the main Department of Social Security in Rivne oblast, who were demining the liberated territory of Donetsk oblast from russian ammunition, returned home. In total, there were three rotations of employees of the group of pyrotechnics to Donetsk oblast from September of last year to January of this year. During this period, pyrotechnicians examined over 100 hectares of territory, where they discovered and destroyed 1 148 ammunition of various types.

Ternopil oblast

The Ternopil school sold a motorcycle, and funds were donated to the Armed Forces. The motorcycle was used as a photo zone near the school.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

An anti-drone complex was sent from Khmelnytskyi to one of the territorial defense units of the oblast. One KVS ANTIDRON-G6 drone control channel suppression hardware complex costs UAH 485K. Funds for its purchase were collected in the Help with Foresters CF.

Chernivtsi oblast

Trench candles, a generator, military ammunition, food, warm clothes, hygiene products, children’s drawings, etc, to the military were sent from Bukovyna. The aid was collected by local residents of the Nedoboivsk community.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

According to the results of the Ramstein meeting, Ukraine will receive 8 Avenger air defense systems, missiles for NASAMS systems, 58 Bradley APCs, 90 Stryker APCs, 350 SUVs, 19 howitzers, thousands of artillery shells, Patriot air defense systems and helicopters. In addition, Great Britain will send Challenger 2 tanks (12 vehicles).

Minister of Defense Pistorius announced that the German Ministry of Defense will allocate a package of military aid to Ukraine worth over EUR 1 billion in the spring. The package will include 40 Marder infantry fighting vehicles, 7 Gepard anti-aircraft self-propelled artillery installations, additional guided missiles for the Iris-T air defense system and the Iris-T anti-aircraft missile complex.

The Ministry of Defense reported that Portugal will send 14 M113 armored personnel carriers, eight large power generators, additional 120-mm ammunition and two tonnes of medical and sanitary equipment to Ukraine.

The US Ministry of Defense reported that Canada has purchased the NASAMS system for Ukraine.

Minister of Defense of Poland, Mariusz Blaszczak, announced that Poland will equip and train a brigade of the Armed Forces as part of a new support package.

SAP will provide about 1K software licenses free of charge for the military needs of the Ministry of Defense. Ukrainian clients will be able to use SAR software and cloud services during the first quarter of 2023.

Nokia will send 5K Wi-Fi routers to provide Internet access to Ukrainian students in shelters.

The UN sent the first batch of humanitarian aid to Soledar of Donetsk oblast. Three trucks delivered food, water, hygiene products and medicines.
