War in Ukraine today: latest news, January 1, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 312nd day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The enemy launched 35 Shahed-136 UAV, all of which were shot down by units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine. Russian occupiers also fired 16 rockets from multiple rocket launchers at a children’s hospital in the city of Kherson.

The territory of Ukraine is still under the threat of air and missile strikes.

After losing 760 people yesterday, the enemy continues to launch offensive operations on Bakhmut and tries to improve the tactical position of units of its troops towards Kupiansk, Lyman and Avdiivka. The enemy is on the defensive towards Novopavlivka and Zaporizhzhia, and is regrouping troops in Kherson area.

The situation is stable towards Volyn, Polissia, Siversk and Sloboda. There are no signs of forming offensive groups.

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the areas of Buchky and Yasna Poliana settlements, Chernihiv oblast were subject to artillery shelling. Novovasylivka, Vyntorivka, Chernatske, Ulanov, Studenok, Khodyne, Iskriskivshchyna, Krasnopillia and Uhroyidy, Sumy oblast and Morokhovets, Zelene, Starytsa, Ohirtseve, Mala Vovcha, Mylove, Vovchansk, Dvorichna, Moskovka and Kamianka, Kharkiv oblast were hit.

Towards Kupiansk, the areas of Masiutivka, Orlianske, Kislivka, Kotliarivka and Krokhmalne settlements, Kharkiv oblast and Vilshany and Stelmakhivka, Luhansk oblast were shelled.

Towards Lyman, Ploschanka, Nevske, Yampolivka, Torske and Dibrova, Luhansk oblast were hit.

Towards Bakhmut, over 15 settlements were affected by various caliber artillery, among them are Spirne, Bilohorivka, Soledar, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Klishchiivka, Kurdyumivka, Druzhba, Maiorsk and Ozeryanivka, Donetsk oblast.

Vodiane, Avdiivka, Krasnohorivka, Maryinka, and Novomykhailivka, Donetsk oblast were again shelled towards Avdiivka.

Towards Novopavlivka, the enemy attacked Vremivka, Velyka Novosilka, Prechystivka, Vuhledar, and Mikilski, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Zaporizhzhia, the enemy shelled over 15 settlements. Among them are Vremivka, Zelene Pole and Novopil, Donetsk oblast; Olhivske, Poltavka, Dorozhnyanka, Zaliznychne, Charivne and Novodanylivka, Zaporizhzhia and Novosilka, Kherson oblast.

Towards Kherson, the civilian infrastructure of the settlements of Havrylivka, Dudchany, Kachkarivka, Respublikanets, Beryslav, Lvove, Ivanivka, Inhulets, Inzhenerne, Antonivka and Kherson were damaged.

To destabilize the humanitarian situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Kherson oblast and to force the local population to the so-called “voluntary evacuation”, the russian occupying forces are firing mortars at Oleshky, Hola Prystan, Plavny, as well as settlements between the settlements.

Mobilization measures are underway in the temporarily occupied Ukrainian Crimea. Military commissariats have started checking lists of people who have not yet participated in a large-scale invasion of Ukraine and are subject to conscription in 2023.

The enemy continues to use civilian facilities to treat russian occupiers. Thus, in the city of Pervomaisk, Alchevsk district, Luhansk oblast, in the premises of a local school, the occupiers deployed a “field hospital” and are treating about 100 servicemen of the occupying forces. In addition, more than 150 wounded mercenaries of the “Wagner” are being treated in the premises of the local maternity hospital, equipped as a military hospital.

Ukrainian aviation launched 13 strikes on the areas of the invaders’ buildup. Ukrainian units of missile forces and artillery hit 2 areas of concentration of the enemy’s manpower and military equipment.

According to the Air Defense Forces of Ukraine, russians cynically launched a barrage of strikes on Ukraine on New Year’s night. The occupiers attacked with Shahed-131/136 UAVs. The Air Defense Forces together with other units brought down 45 attack drones.

The press service of DTEK informed that on December 31, as a result of russian strikes, one of the heating stations was damaged. They also added that it has been the 23rd russian terrorist attack on their equipment. 

The Ministry of Reintegration advised that 1596 prisoners were returned home. 1464 among them are servicemen and 132 are civilians. The President Office, the Chief  Intelligence Bureau, the Ministry of Reintegration and the State Security Service joined their forces to assist in the exchange of prisoners. 

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, as of 23 December, 2022, at least 1680 residents were killed and 3291 apartment buildings destroyed as a result of enemy hostilities in 2022.

Referring to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the invaders intensified counterintelligence measures to detect pro-Ukrainian people near Lyman Druhyi border village, Kupiansk region. Towards Kupiansk, the enemy units try to improve their tactical position. Towards Sloboda, the situation remains “stable”.

Yesterday, russian invaders shelled cities and settlements with mortars and artillery. Kupiansk, Vovchansk and other settlements of Chuhuiv, Kharkiv and Kupiansk districts were attacked. As a result of the enemy shelling in Kupiansk, outbuildings were damaged and fires broke out.

Based on the information provided by the Regional Centre for Emergency Medical Care, there were no casualties.

De-mining continues. Yesterday, pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine defused 808 explosive ordnance.

Donetsk oblast

The State Border Guard Service reported that on the eve of the New Year, Ukrainian border guards destroyed a dozen russian soldiers, an infantry fighting vehicle and captured two prisoners in Donbas.

Even on New Year’s Eve, russians continued to attack different parts of the frontline.

Towards Volnovakha, Vuhledar and the outskirts were attacked. There were no casualties.

Towards Donetsk, the private sector of Kurakhove was shelled yesterday and after midnight russians shelled Avdiivka twice with Hrad multiple rocket launchers. There were no casualties.

Towards Horlivka, Toretsk was shelled, 8 buildings were damaged, but there were no casualties.

Yesterday a shell landed in Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka of Druzhkivka community. The shell did not explode. There were no destructions and no casualties.

On December 31, russian troops shelled Mykolaivka with S-300 missile system. The shelling destroyed an educational institution and two apartment buildings.

Head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko, reported that yesterday russians injured 1 civilian in Dalne.

Luhansk oblast

Yesterday, our troops repelled enemy attacks near Bilohorivka, Ploschanka and Stelmakhivka. Russians are fortifying defensive redoubts in the occupied territories. They involve civilians from russian federation to equip the system of engineering barriers.

Towards Kupiansk, Andriivka, Novoselivske and Stelmakhivka were targeted on December 31. Towards Lyman, Chervonopopivka, Dibrova, Makiivka, Nevske and Ploshchanka were attacked.

Aerial reconnaissance of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine detected a russian infantry fighting vehicle with a crew in a forest belt.

Head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, Serhii Haidai, informed that the main Christmas tree of Luhansk oblast this year was in liberated Nevske.

According to the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, starting from today people from the occupied Luhansk oblast will be allowed to enter Belgorod region only with passports of russian federation and pseudo-republics. During the week, 350 injured invaders were brought to Bilovodsk.

At least 417 civilians of Luhansk oblast, whose lives were ended by russian aggression, did not celebrate the New Year. These are only officially recorded data. The tollof killed Luhansk residents is much higher.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, on New Year’s Eve, 32 air targets were detected and destroyed over the capital. The infrastructure facility was damaged in Kyiv oblast as a result of russian drone attack.

According to the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, all critical infrastructure of the capital after yesterday’s and last night’s shelling is operating as usual. Exhibition center pavilions in Kyiv were damaged as a result of a missile attack. The movement of electric trains from “Lisova” metro station to “Dnipro” station is temporarily closed because an object similar to a missile fragment has been detected.

As a result of the russian missile attack on December 31 in Kyiv, 1 person was killed, 21 people sustained injuries of varying severity. 7 missiles and an enemy UAV were downed on their way to Kyiv. Oleksiy Kuleba, the Head of Kyiv Regional Military Administration, reported that there were no casualties in Kyiv oblast, but several civilian facilities were damaged by missile fragments.

The head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration Oleksiy Kuleba reported that based on the results of 2022: 1,368 residents of the Kyiv oblast were killed as a result of the full-scale invasion. The area of mined territories is of the same size as the territory of Belgium. More than 4.5 thousand houses destroyed by russia have been restored in the oblast. During 2022, about 200 official delegations from all over the world (presidents, prime ministers, members of governments) visited Kyiv oblast.

As of today, 3.6 million people live in Kyiv, almost as many as before the full-scale invasion. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko, by February 24, 3.8 million people lived in the capital, in March the number was less than 1 million. Today, 300K residents of Kyiv are refugees from other areas of the country.

Instead of a traditional Christmas tree, a model of a russian missile was installed near the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States. Thus, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UAnimals organization draw the attention of the world community to the environmental crimes of russia, due to which the environment is being destroyed, entire species of animals are disappearing, and Christmas trees in the forests burned by shelling are replaced by enemy missiles.

Oleh Skrypka and his band Vopli Vidoplyasova performed a New Year’s Eve concert in the lobby of Kyiv Central Railway Station. To raise the spirits of people during the war, musicians sang carols, performed military and original songs.

Zhytomyr oblast

The mayor of Zhytomyr Serhiy Sukhomlyn reported that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, 40K Zhytomyr residents have left their homes and the city. However, many internally displaced persons moved to the city.

A Christmas marathon was organized in the Radomyshl community to raise money for a thermal imaging device for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. During the marathon, local residents raised twice the planned amount, so they purchased two thermal imaging devices. Both devices have already been delivered to the military who are fighting in the Bakhmut sector.

Camouflage net for Ukrainian servicemen was woven by preschoolers together with adults in Khazhyn village, Semenivka community. The grandfather of one of the kindergarten students is fighting in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This was reported by the head of the Semenivka community Natalia Semeniuk. According to her, the net was woven in a few days to deliver it to the military as quickly as possible.

Sumy oblast

The head of Sumy Regional Military Administration Dmytro Zhyvytskyi reported that yesterday, russian occupiers launched 110 shells on the border area of Sumy oblast. The enemy fired artillery, mortars, “Grad” MLRS, grenade launchers, and small arms on Krasnopillia, Znob-Novgorodske, Seredyno-Buda, Bilopillia, Esman, and Shalyhine communities. Residential and infrastructure facilities were damaged in Esman community: broken windows, damaged roofs and destroyed facades of buildings, as well as damaged power lines. A school, a shop and a civilian enterprise were damaged too.

Around midnight, the enemy shelled Seredino-Budska community with mortars. There were 6 incoming shells.

According to the “North” Operational Command, on the first day of the new year, invaders continued to attack communities of Sumy oblast.

In the morning, russian invaders shelled Vilna Sloboda village. There were 15 shells, presumably fired from multiple rocket launchers. Later in the afternoon, the same number of shells (9 presumably from barrel artillery) was reported in the village of Esman in Hlukhiv district. The enemy shelled Shalyhine village in Shostka district (3 rounds, presumably fired from mortars), and Katerynivka village in Lebedyn district (10 shells, presumably fired from barrel artillery).

According to the head of Sumy Regional Military Administration Dmytro Zhyvytskyi, seven more servicemen from Sumy oblast returned home from russian captivity. Mykola Dubonos from Hlukhiv, Ian Kosyak and Rustem Remetov from Okhtyrka, Oleksandr Nesterenko from Krolevets, Yevhen Horunov from Sumy, Bohdan Zikraty from Konotop and Valeriy Sytnyk from Romny were able to celebrate the New Year on their native land.

The mayor of Trostianets Yurii Bova reported that the great-great-granddaughter of the famous sugar factory owner Leopold Koenig will launch two projects in Trostianets to provide heating to the townspeople. It is planned to open the “Warm room from Leopold Koenig” in Trostianets library, which will be provided with a generator, fuel, Starlink and tea with cookies for all visitors. The second project is designed for mothers with newborn babies: they will be able to stay in a warm hospital for a long time if there are issues with heating at home. 

Chernihiv oblast

The spokeswoman of the Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment Halyna Shekhovtsova reported that yesterday, the enemy shelled Novhorod-Siverskyi region with mortars. Four mortar rounds exploded on the territory of the community in the afternoon.

According to the “North” Operational Command, in the morning of January 1, the occupiers continued to attack Chernihiv oblast. Leonivka village of Semenivka community came under fire. There were 17 incoming shells, presumably fired from a mortar.

A charity auction to raise funds for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was held in the village of Turia of Snovsk community on the border area of Chernihiv oblast. The auction lot was the book “Unconquered Chernihiv oblast: real stories of war”. The book “Unconquered Chernihiv Oblast” purchased during the event was donated to the local library so that everyone could read it.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

According to Head of the Regional Council Mykola Lukashuk, overnight russians attacked the Nikopol region. They fired about 20 missiles from heavy artillery at  Nikopol. They hit residential buildings. One 48-year-old woman was injured. She received medical help and will be treated at home. In the city, a high-rise building, two dozen buildings, including five-story buildings, private houses and farm buildings were damaged. Shops, pharmacies, a polyclinic, a car, and power lines were also attacked. In addition, the occupiers hit the Chervonohryhorivka community.

At night, the Air Defense Forces shot down one Shahed.

Vinnytsia oblast

Vinnytsia rescuers received new special equipment that effectively responds to various challenges related to the russian armed aggression.

Poltava oblast

To help the AFU, the athlete from Poltava, Ivan Mai, auctioned his bronze medal from the 2020 Paralympics.

Myrhorod District Council informed that they received a load of charitable aid for children: toys, constructors, dolls, puzzles from its partners the American Rotary Club from the city of Randolph. 

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, the head of the Cherkasy Regional State Administration, informed that the anti-aircraft defense system had successfully operated on New Year’s Eve in the oblast.

During the New Year’s exchange of prisoners, Yuliia Chepurko, a doctor from Uman, was released. She is the wife of Oleksandr Chepurko, released more than a month ago. Both of them were at Azovstal.

The city’s Jewish community provided charitable assistance for Cherkasy. Food and hygiene items from Jewish friends will be given to internally displaced persons and elderly people who need it most.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the National Police in Zaporizhzhia oblast, occupiers shelled civilian infrastructure in the area of 15 settlements over the past day. There were 23 reports of destruction of civilian houses and infrastructure as a result of shelling by the russian military. Also on New Year’s Eve, russians shelled Orikhiv. As a result of the attack, one person was killed and three were wounded. 

As reported yesterday, russian troops launched two missile strikes on the territory of Zaporizhzhia, one of them on the residential sector. As a result of the missile strike, 2 private houses were destroyed and 8 houses were damaged, cars, power lines, and gas pipes were damaged. Four people were injured: a man, two women, one of them pregnant, and a child. The 14-year-old girl is now in critical condition in intensive care. Today, residents of Zaporizhzhia came to eliminate the enemy shelling as volunteers. Together with municipal workers, 70 people took part in clearing the debris after the missile attack. This was reported by the Secretary of Zaporizhzhia City Council, Anatoliy Kurtev.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to the ‘South’ Air Command, yesterday the air defense forces destroyed seven enemy Shahed-136 drones over Mykolaiv oblast. Mykolaiv also came under russian missile fire. Two residential buildings were destroyed, and 12 more residential buildings and three educational institutions were damaged. There was also a fire on the territory of the garage cooperative. Seven people were injured as a result of the shelling. The enemy struck the port area and the settlement of the Ochakiv community. Residential, multi-story buildings and an enterprise were partially destroyed and damaged, and four fires were registered. The consequences of the shelling are being clarified. There were no casualties. Also in the morning, a settlement of the Kutsurub community came under enemy fire. A residential building was damaged. Russians also fired 6 Iskander missiles at residential areas of Mykolaiv. 

As for the shelling of Ochakiv, the State Emergency Service reported that shells hit the residential sector and the building of the fire and rescue unit. The personnel were saved by the fact that the duty guard was extinguishing a fire in a residential sector in another part of the city. The dispatcher, who was at the workplace, remained unharmed.

In the evening of December 31, a resident of the village of Buzke began to have contractions and urgently called an ambulance to get to the maternity hospital. On the way, the ambulance got stuck in the mud. Since it was time to give birth, a midwife from Nova Odesa was contacted by video. The head of Mykolaiv RMA Vitaliy Kim told about this case. ‘While the car was being freed, the woman gave birth. A girl was born around 00:00. The birth was delivered by a nurse of the Buh hospital Lilia Sukhorska, by phone – doctor Tatiana Lyubenko,’ he said.

Odesa oblast

New Year in Odesa and the oblast began with air raid alarms. The enemy again tried to carry out psychological attacks on civilians. This was reported by the spokesman of the Odesa regional military administration, Serhiy Bratchuk.

The press service of the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority reported that the ports of Odesa received 12 high-capacity generators from the Howard J. Buffett Foundation. The transfer of generators from the foundation was supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and is the first batch of assistance. “This donation will help ensure the continuation of exports of Ukrainian agricultural products in times of war by helping to minimize the impact of the conflict on global food security,” said Oleksiy Vostrikov, head of the state-owned enterprise.

Kherson oblast

On New Year’s Eve, russian occupiers left Kherson and the settlements near the city without electricity. Head of the Military Analytical Center Yaroslav Yanushevych stated that the russians hit a critical infrastructure facility. Russian invaders shelled the territory of Kherson oblast 40 times. The enemy fired at peaceful settlements of the region with artillery, MLRS, and mortars. The russian army attacked Kherson 18 times, and the buildings of the regional children’s hospital were damaged. Yesterday, 1 person was killed, and 3 people wounded due to russian shelling. Among the wounded, 2 are children: a 13-year-old boy is in serious condition, a 12-year-old girl received moderate injuries.

According to Yaroslav Yanushevych, russia fired about seven shells at Kherson Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital. The thoracic department of the neonatal building was heavily damaged, two intensive care wards were destroyed and other medical rooms of the main building were damaged. In total, more than 700 windows were broken in the hospital. The russian attack caused a fire: a nurse’s office and a ward for patients were burning. Fire and rescue units promptly arrived at the scene and eliminated the fire. The hospital staff evacuated 17 children, 4 parents, and 38 hospital employees to the shelter.

According to the RMA, 13-year-old Yaroslav came under russian shelling in the village of Nadnepryanske. The boy in serious condition was hospitalized, where doctors literally pulled him out of the dead. The next day, in the first minutes of the New Year, the russian army attacked the children’s clinical hospital, where Yaroslav was in the intensive care unit. The boy was evacuated to Mykolaiv, where doctors continue to fight for his life.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The RMA reported that during the exchange, which took place on December 31, three men, native of Volyn, were released from captivity.

The Main Department of the State Emergency Service in Volyn oblast reported that using the funds from the city budget of Lutsk, rescuers purchased emergency rescue and special technical equipment to ensure civil protection of the community.

Head of the volunteer logistics center Marlog and a well-known volunteer from Kovel, Nataliia Popova, received the Golden Heart award. It was personally handed over by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Zakarpattia oblast

In Zakarpattia oblast, registration in the support program for entrepreneurs has started Energy Help. Local businesses can receive partial compensation for the purchase of alternative energy sources.

In Zakarpattia, the wife of border guard Yurii Kutsuk, who fell at Azovstal, was awarded the Order of Courage. The order was presented by Colonel Valerii Padytel, who was recently released from captivity.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Employees of the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service in the oblast neutralized fragments of the Kalibr-type missile, launched by russia on the territory of the oblast on December 29. The decontamination took place in an open area (in a field) near the village of Ozeriany of the Oleshan Territorial Community.

Lviv oblast

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported that in Lviv oblast, a volunteer fire brigade started working in the village of Buniv, Yavoriv district.

Rivne oblast

For over a month of operation of the Invincibility Centers, their services have been used by almost 27K residents of Rivne oblast. In total, there are 240 Invincibility Centers in Rivne oblast.

Coordinator of missing persons in Rivne oblast, Olena Khotenko, reported that servicemen Mykola Sydoruk, Vasyl Honta and a soldier from the National Guard, Oleksii Anul, originally from Rivne oblast, return home from captivity.

Rivne emergency centers received 9 new ambulances. Two “C” type Citroen Jumper ambulances were purchased within the framework of Olena Zelenska’s initiative under the UNITED24 program. Another 7 “B” type Citroen Jumper vehicles were purchased by the Ministry of Health.

The commander of the 103rd separate brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Colonel Valerii Kurko, presented awards to the fighters of one of the brigade’s battalions. The fighters received badges Badge of Honor from Minister of Defense of Ukraine Oleksii Reznikov.

Thanks to volunteers, gifts were prepared for over 200 children whose parents were taken away by the war in Rivne oblast. New Year’s parcels came from the US, Canada, Poland, Slovakia and other countries.

Ternopil oblast

Rescuers from the Ternopil oblast paid a working visit to the city of Zakopane, Lesser Poland Voivodeship of the Republic of Poland. 30 rescuers took part in theoretical and applied training, during which they gained European experience in rescuing people. The rescue service of Ternopil oblast received fire-rescue equipment worth EUR 13K.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Head of the RMA, Serhii Hamalii, reported that in Khmelnytskyi, as a result of rocket fire on December 31, a kindergarten, houses, commercial and industrial facilities, and communal infrastructure were damaged. 7 people were injured, two of them are in serious condition. A 22-year-old girl, hospitalized in an extremely serious condition yesterday after shelling the city, passed away. Part of the city remained without electricity.

The RMA reported that on New Year’s Day, another 140 Defenders of Ukraine were released from enemy captivity, 2 of them from Khmelnytskyi.

Khmelnytskyi communities received 9 new school buses. From the first day of the war, Khmelnytskyi oblast sent 84 school buses to Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts for the evacuation of the population.

Chernivtsi oblast

A mobile dispensary started operating in one of the communities of Bukovyna. The medical equipment for the outpatient clinic was provided by the Doctors of the World Greece (Médecins du Monde Greece – Ιατροί του Κόσμου) International Organization.

A local fire brigade started operating in one of the most remote settlements of the Sokyrian community. Residents have equipped the premises in which the unit will work, and the Main Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Chernivtsi oblast has handed over a fire truck.

Germany started production of RCH-155 self-propelled guns for Ukraine. On the official site, Germany informed that 18 units will be handed over.

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Rishi Sunak, in his first New Year’s address, promised to continue supporting Ukraine.

French President Emmanuel Macron, in his New Year’s address to the nation, said that his country would support Ukraine to victory: “Count on France and count on Europe.”

Former British Prime Minister Borys Johnson expressed confidence in Ukraine’s victory in the war in 2023.

Queen Marhrete II of Denmark congratulated Ukrainians on the New Year and noted that the heroic struggle of Ukraine for its freedom makes a “strong impression on everyone”.

In London, the salute over the famous London Eye had yellow and blue colors. The buildings near the London Eye were also lit up in yellow and blue.
