War in Ukraine today: latest news, February 7, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 349th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6pm:   

The enemy launched 1 missile and 16 air strikes, as well as 14 MLRS attacks, namely, at civilian targets in Ochakiv (Mykolaiv oblast) and Antonivka (Kherson oblast). 

There remains a threat of launching air and missile strikes across Ukraine.

Towards Volyn, Polissia, Siverk, and Sloboda, there are no changes, no offensive groups of the adversary have been found either. The settlements of Zarutske, Popivka, Sadky (Sumy oblast), Strilecha, Morokhovets, Zelene, Neskuchne, Vovchansk, Budarky, Vilkhuvatka, Krasne Pershe, Novomlynsk, and Kamianka (Kharkiv oblast) were shelled.

Towards Kupiansk and Lyman, the enemy shelled over 30 settlements. Among them are Dvorichna, Hrianykivka, Kucherivka, Kotliarivka, Krokhmalne, Vyshneve (Kharkiv oblast), Novoselivske, Stelmakhivka, Novoiehorivka, Makiivka, Ploshchanka, Nevske, Pishchane, Kreminna, Dibrova, and Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast).

Towards Bakhmut, Zaliznianske, Krasna Hora, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Mykolaivka, Stupochky, Klishchiivka, Kurdiumivka, Niu York, and Vesele (Donetsk oblast) were shelled. In total, more than 15 settlements were targeted.

Towards Avdiivka and Novopavlivka, Avdiivka, Vodyane, Netailove, Marinka, Novomykhailivka, Bohoiavlenka, Vuhledar, Velyka Novosilka, Zolota Nyva, and Neskuchne (Donetsk oblast) came under tank, mortar, and artillery fire.

Towards Zaporizhzhia, over 20 settlements were hit, including Novopil, Olhivske, Malynivka, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Mala Tokmachka, Orikhiv, Novodanylivka, Mali Shcherbaky, and Stepove (Zaporizhzhia oblast).

Towards Kherson, enemy fire damaged 17 settlements, namely Mykhailivka, Havrylivka, Mylove, Zmiivka, Novoberyslav, Kozatske, Ivanivka, Mykilske, Antonivka, and Kherson.

In Melitopol (Zaporizhzhia oblast), the occupiers are forcing employees of public institutions who have received russian citizenship to renounce their Ukrainian citizenship in writing. Those non-compliant are threatened with dismissal. 

The Ukrainian Air Force launched 7 air strikes on buildups of personnel and military equipment of the occupiers, and 2 air strikes on positions of anti-aircraft missile systems. The Ukrainian Defence Forces also destroyed a russian SU-25 attack aircraft and an Orlan UAV of the enemy.


MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak reported that the Verkhovna Rada adopted draft laws on extending the terms of martial law and general mobilization for another 90 days. Martial law has been extended from February 19 for 90 days.

Ukrenergo informs that from February 8, power consumption limits will be changed throughout Ukraine. In each oblast, on one day for 2 weeks, there will be no restrictions. Such actions are needed to see how much each region consumes under normal operation of the power system.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Yesterday, the invaders continued to shell settlements with tanks, mortars and artillery in Chuhuiv, Kharkiv and Kupiansk districts bordering the contact line.

Dvorichna, Hlyboke, Kotliarivka, Kupiansk, Strilecha and Vovchansk were under attack.

In Vovchansk, Chuhuiv region, an enemy shell hit the city hospital. The roof on the area of 150 square meters was on fire. Eight people were evacuated from the hospital’s bomb shelter. In addition, as a result of the shelling, a civilian car burned down, a private building and a transformer pole were damaged.

Head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleh Syniehubov, reported that in Kupiansk region, two 5-storey residential buildings, a private building and outbuildings were damaged by shelling. There were no casualties.

Head of Zolochiv community, Viktor Kovalenko, informed that in the afternoon, the enemy launched a mortar attack on several villages. According to him, the infrastructure and private sector of the villages were damaged, but there were no casualties.

Referring to the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, today, Kharkiv oblast received 11 modern comfortable Iveco Irisbus Crossway buses from the Estonian government, which will be used in 7 districts of the region for the needs of educators and community reconstruction.

Donetsk oblast

Towards Volnovakha, Vuhledar was intensively shelled – 5 buildings were damaged, no information about casualties.

Towards Donetsk, russians attacked the Kurakhivka community four times: 3 buildings and an administrative building were damaged in Kurakhivka, and Hirnyk and Kurakhove were also hit. At night, russians heavily shelled Marinka, and in the morning, there were 6 attacks on Avdiivka from Grad MRLs. The exact consequences are being established. The shelling of Kamianka in the Ocheretyne community continues.

Towards Horlivka, 1 person was injured in Paraskoviivka, a building in Mykolaivka of the Kostiantynivka community and several buildings in Pivnichne of the Toretsk community were damaged.

Head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko, said that towards Lysychansk, Torske and Zarichne of the Lyman community were again under attack, with no casualties.

Luhansk oblast

In the occupied Novopskov, there is nowhere to place the corpses of russian soldiers. Therefore, russian troops are building a stationary crematorium there.

Russians are storming our positions disguised as Ukrainians. A similar masquerade is observed along the entire front line. But such deception does not help the enemy advance.

Head of the Luhansk Military Administration, Serhii Haidai, reported that Luhansk partisans set on fire a railroad control cabinet. The equipment for automated railway control (signalling cabinet) was destroyed on the Rovenky-Antratsyt railway connection near Yasenovskyi settlement.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

At the northern line of defense, units of the 120th Territorial Defense Brigade conducted a two-stage joint staff training to enhance the defense of Kyiv. Chief of Staff, Deputy Commander of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Pavlyuk says that the training is aimed at acquiring skills during defensive combat.

More than 77 K explosive objects have been defused in Kyiv oblast. Mines and other ordnance can be found in abandoned houses, on the streets, playgrounds, in fields, forests, and on roadsides.

US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink announced on Twitter that Deputy Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Isabelle Coleman arrived in Kyiv.

Mayor of Bucha, Anatolii Fedoruk reports that the city of Albany, the capital of the New York state, became the first American city-partner for Bucha. He signed an agreement on cooperation and partnership with Mayor Katey Shien during an official visit to the USA. The parties agreed on the experience exchange between the cities in the fields of education, medicine and management.

The Kyiv RMA reports that in the oblast, more than 6,400 facilities damaged by russian armed aggression have been restored and almost 3,700 partially restored. So far, 156 general secondary and preschool education institutions have been renovated, and 22 partially renovated. Also, 86 health care facilities, damaged as a result of hostilities, were restored.

According to Ukrenergo, there is a power capacity deficit in Kyiv, and emergency shutdowns continue. The deficit is especially significant in the morning and evening hours (peak consumption). All damaged power facilities are being intensively repaired.

Kyiv received another batch of humanitarian aid from the Italian Hope Ukraine Foundation and the Doctors with Africa CUAMM organization, namely ten tents, ten small tents and a generator. According to the mayor of Kyiv Vitalii Klytschko, these funds do not stop supporting Ukraine and Kyiv during the year. They contributed to delivering a large number of warm clothes, shoes, generators and special tents designed by the UN.

The RMA reports that Kyiv oblast became second among the regions with the largest number of adopted decisions under the eRobota program. 227 local businessmen received positive decisions regarding the provision of financing to implement their own business projects.

Nova Poshta is testing a co-working branch in Obolon, Kyiv. The new format combines a cargo compartment and a small co-working space, where there is a generator, charging stations and uninterrupted free Internet. They plan to expand the project and open such branches in other cities of Ukraine.

The fundraising platform UNITED24 states that famous French film director, Oscar laureate, screenwriter and actor Michel Hazanavicius arrived in Kyiv. A month ago the actor donated EUR 125 K for the reconstruction of the Izium city hospital destroyed by the russian invaders. He organized an auction to sell lots from famous people to collect these funds. 

Zhytomyr oblast

An additional bus route will be introduced in Zhytomyr for the period of martial law. It will replace a streetcar because of the electricity shortage in the city. It is not possible to release the entire rolling stock of electric transport on the routes.

The UNICEF project Back to Learning Together is being implemented in the oblast to create the maximum number of opportunities for learning and development of children, who have very limited access to education in current conditions. Mobile educational teams work on a volunteer basis.

Children from the Novohuivynske community gave gifts for Valentine’s Day to the military, who are fighting for the independence of Ukraine. Valentine cards with wishes from children will be handed over with gifts from Zhytomyr volunteers from Grandma’s Battalion. These are pillows, hats, gloves, socks that will go to the soldiers in Druzhkivka.

Sumy oblast

The State Border Service reported that the russian occupation forces fired mortars and barrel artillery at the border of Sumy and Chernihiv oblasts. The Krasnopillia and Hlukhiv communities of Sumy oblast and Semenivka of Chernihiv oblast came under enemy attack. In the afternoon, the russians fired more than 10 120-mm mortar shells at the territory of the Krasnopillia community. At the same time, along the border of the Hlukhiv territorial community, the enemy fired 6 shells from artillery installations. At night, the russian occupiers fired about 40 shells from mortars in the Semenivka community.

The ‘North’ Operational Command reported that the enemy fired more than 28 shells from grenade launchers and mortars at the border of Sumy oblast. There are no losses in personnel or equipment. No information was received about casualties among the local population or damage to civil infrastructure.

In Trostianka, a powerful 38 kW generator from benefactors will help provide water to the entire neighbourhood during power outages. Residents of the Trostianets community – 2,500 consumers of the micro-district – suffer from constant blackouts of electricity and water supply. The support is provided within the framework of the project “EU Strong Regions Program – Special Support Program for Ukraine”, which is co-financed by the EU and the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany (BMZ) and implemented by GIZ Ukraine.

Nadiia Stepanenko, Deputy Director of the Department of Social Protection of the Population of Sumy oblast, reported that there are almost 80K displaced persons in Sumy oblast. There are 79,565 people registered in the Unified Information Database of Internally Displaced Persons, including 20,822 children, 3,045 persons with disabilities, and 14,068 pensioners. From the number of those registered, almost 22 K have moved to Sumy oblast from other oblasts since the introduction of martial law. 2,633 people have sheltered 5,898 internally displaced persons within the  Shelter program.

In Sumy schools, ‘safety classrooms’ are organized to teach schoolchildren the rules of fire and mine safety, and civil defense through introducing the algorithm of actions in case of emergency situations and developing first aid skills. The room is divided into several areas (fire, mine, game, life safety, psychological relief, pre-medical care, and educational area) and is equipped with an interactive board, dummies, equipment, and didactic and visual materials to master the basics of fire and mine protection in theory and practice. Such classes are organized due to joint efforts of educational institutions, the State Emergency Service, the police, philanthropists, and international organizations. Teachers, emergency workers, policemen, medical workers, and combatants are engaged into the All-Ukrainian project which is necessary not only in current warfare realities but in peaceful life as well.

Chernihiv oblast

Demining of the oblast continues. Over the past week, pyrotechnicians from the State Emergency Service were involved 3 times in neutralizing explosive objects and seized 3 such items. A total of 491,93 explosive items have been seized since the outbreak of hostilities.

With the assistance of the Chernihiv RMA, the Education Department of the City Council received 19 K liters of water (20 pallets) for shelters and Invincibility Centres from the Food Foundation UA. The water, packaged in tin cans, is intended for shelters in local kindergartens and schools, as well as for local Invincibility Centres.

A meeting with representatives of the International Medical Corps (MMC) took place in the RMA. Restoring institutions that functioned before the full-scale invasion with funding from the MMC was under consideration.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

According to Head of the regional council, Mykola Lukashuk, the enemy shelled the Marhanets community in the Nikopol region at night. The russian occupiers fired about four dozen shells at the community. Power lines were damaged by shelling, as a result of which one of the pumping stations in the community was cut off. 9 settlements are without water, that’s about 60 K consumers. In addition, the russians mutilated four private residential buildings, an outbuilding, power grids, and a gas pipeline.

Five people injured by a missile attack on a high-rise building in Dnipro on January 14 are still in hospitals. Their condition is stable. In total, medical institutions and the emergency service provided medical assistance to 84 injured people, including 16 children.

Vinnytsia oblast

The Vinnytsia City Council reported that the city received 8 powerful generators of 50 and 150 kW. This is the third tranche of aid from Germany. The equipment will be handed over for the needs of three Transparent offices, educational and medical institutions, as well as housing and communal services.

The Vinnytsia City Council reported that specialized beds, mattresses, and bedside tables were given to the Vinnytsia Emergency Hospital. The institution received humanitarian cargo from Svitla-Ukraine. One of the main advantages of beds with an electric drive is the ability to adjust their height, which is extremely important for people who are forced to be in a lying position for a long time. The equipment has been placed in the surgical department of the hospital.

Kirovohrad oblast

Residents of the Popelnaste community collected funds to purchase a thermal device for the engineering and sapper platoon of the 196th battalion of the 124th Kherson separate brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The iRay Saim SCP 19W thermal imaging rifle scope has been handed over to the military.

The Oleksandriia community in Kirovohrad oblast received another batch of humanitarian aid. Mattresses, hygiene kits, generators, water tanks, boilers, first-aid kits, and oil coolers will be given to internally displaced persons. The assistance is provided by the Safe Future charity fund, the regional organization Red Cross Society of Ukraine and the regional humanitarian headquarters of the Kirovohrad RMA.

Poltava oblast

According to Dmytro Lunin, Head of the Poltava Regional State Administration, the oblast received 45 Starlink satellite communication stations from Polish partners and the “+380” charitable organization. They will be transferred to Invincibility Centres to ensure uninterrupted access to the Internet.

Cherkasy oblast

Volunteers from Cherkasy oblast brought humanitarian cargo from Italy from MALVE Ukraine to Cherkasy to the Khreshchatyk City Charitable Fund. Aid was also sent to the military at the front.

The first digital educational hub Together was opened on the basis of the STEM center of the Cherkasy Regional Institute of Postgraduate Education of Teachers. The hub was created to provide quality education for young people, especially for internally displaced persons.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Towards Zaporizhzhia, the situation did not change much. The enemy focuses its main efforts on holding the occupied positions. There were 93 attacks on the positions of Ukrainian defenders with tanks, rocket and barrel artillery along the entire contact line.

According to the National Security Service in Zaporizhzhia oblast, the occupiers shelled civilian infrastructure in the settlements of  Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka, Novomykolaivka, Preobrazhenka, Zaliznychne, Huliaipole, Kamianske, Novodanylivka, Olhivske, Mali Shcherbaky,  Charivne, Poltavka, Zelenyi Hai, Novoandriivka, Zatyshshia, Shcherbaky, Orikhiv, Stepove, and Pavlivka.

According to Mayor of Energodar Dmitry Orlov, the situation in the city remains tense. There is no heating in the city as the enemy is preventing any of the power units at the Zaporizhzhia NPP from being launched. There is no other source of centralised heating and hot water. The temperature is 10-15 degrees above zero in the houses. There are 15 K residents staying in the city.

At the Zaporizhzhya NPP, which has been seized for almost a year, the russian-backed militants continue unauthorised construction work on the territory of the dry spent fuel storage facility. The invaders do not allow Ukrainian personnel and the IAEA representatives present at the nuclear power plant to enter the construction site. The operation is an illegal interference with the design of the spent fuel dry storage facility at the Zaporizhzhia NPP and a gross violation of both the terms of the plant’s operating licence and international nuclear and radiation safety requirements.

Mykolaiv oblast

On February 6, at 23:58, the enemy struck the settlement of the Ochakiv community with MLRS. As a result, there is no electricity in part of the village. Information about the damage is being clarified. There were no casualties.

According to the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, at 00:00, as a result of hostile shelling of the Chornomorsk community, an infrastructure facility was damaged. 

Odesa oblast

According to the DTEK, emergency power outages continue to be in effect in Odesa and Odesa oblast. Electricity will be supplied for two hours every eight hours.

According to Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal, the government has allocated UAH 30 million from the state budget reserve fund to purchase fuel for generators in Odesa, where a substation accident occurred. More than 80 powerful generators have been delivered to the city.  

Kherson oblast

According to the Kherson Regional Military Administration, russian occupiers attacked the oblast 31 times. Civilian settlements were shelled with artillery, MLRS, mortars and tanks.

According to the Kherson RMA, the russian army attacked Kherson 7 times, damaging residential buildings. 2 people were injured of varying severity. 

The previous day, 2 people were injured due to the russian shelling in the oblast. 

A travelling charity exhibition of paintings “Kherson Oblast is Ukraine” was opened in Ternopil. The paintings depict iconic and picturesque places of the oblast, reflecting the history of heroic resistance of Kherson residents to the russian occupation, the famous Kherson watermelons being their symbols.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The RMA reported that the Garna Ukraina DP CF sent a fire truck to the Rivne community of Volyn oblast.

Zakarpattia oblast

During the working trip to the front, RMA representatives met with Carpathian Sich soldiers. Intelligence equipment, DJI Matrice drones of various modifications, equipped with artificial intelligence technology and cameras with thermal imaging capable of focusing on targets and detecting potential danger, were handed over to the unit defenders.

The Uzhhorod Research Lyceum received the flag of Ukraine from the front by the ‘West’ Operational Command. Many soldiers from Zakarpattia defend the country in relevant military units. During the week, 3 more such flags, symbolizing indomitability of the Ukrainian spirit and fearlessness of our soldiers, will be sent to educational institutions in Irshava, Berehovo and Khust. 

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

In the RMA, a meeting with representatives of an investment company from the US was held. During the meeting, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed to select investment projects for foreign investors in strategically important areas of development of the oblast.

In the RMA a meeting with heads of departments of health care and social policy of the RMA, management of digital development, digital transformations and digitalization of the RMA, territorial subdivisions of central bodies of executive power, health care institutions, social sphere of Ivano-Frankivsk oblast and representatives of public organizations was held. Rehabilitation of persons with limited physical capabilities and providing them with social guarantees were discussed.

As part of another exchange of prisoners, which took place on February 4, 5 servicemen from Ivano-Frankivsk oblast returned to Ukraine, namely Roman Benko, Vladyslav Bohaichuk, Vasyl Boichuk, Dmytro Ostashchuk and Ruslan Shapovalov. Since the war began, 23 military personnel from Prykarpattia have returned home from captivity.

Rules for the use of generators have been approved in Ivano-Frankivsk. If a violation is detected, it can be fined from UAH 350 for citizens and up to UAH 1,7K for legal entities.

Lviv oblast

In the Lviv Regional Bureau of Forensic Medical Expertise, the Department of Forensic Medical Molecular and Genetic Expertises was launched. For this purpose, modern equipment for conducting DNA analysis was purchased for UAH 38 million from the oblast budget. This is a new and necessary step of updating forensic examination of physical evidence.

The unmanned reconnaissance complex Mara was received by the fighters of the 103rd separate brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the IT company Lionwood.software. Operators of this UAV will be able to obtain data on enemy equipment, warehouses and deployment of personnel in the enemy rear.

In the Yavoriv region, the social project Veteran’s Chamber is being completed. The 5 wards for defenders were renovated, furnished, equipped with showers, toilets, and hand basins.

The honored Carpathian Song and Dance Ensemble Verkhovyna collected $3K for the Armed Forces of Ukraine as part of a thanksgiving tour in Poland. A car for Ukrainian soldiers will be bought.

The RMA reported that creative teams of the Komarni community collected over UAH 55K for the 71st hunting brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Servicemen of the 125th Brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were awarded with the Steel Cross badge by Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valerii Zaluzhnyi. In accordance with the Decree of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Roman Purii, Oleh Stetsyshyn, Yurii Lavdyr and Taras Mykhats were awarded with the Order of Courage III degree (posthumously). The awards were given to the soldiers’ relatives.

Rivne oblast

Mayor of Varash, Oleksandr Menzul, reported that in the north of Rivne oblast, in the city of Varash, military tactical exercises are being conducted.

In Rivne oblast, soldiers of the 104th Territorial Defense Brigade developed the Poliskyi Himars. This is a S-60 anti-aircraft artillery installation. Fighters adapted it to the conditions of modern war, installing it on a truck.

The RMA reported that from Germany, the state archive of Rivne oblast received hardware for digitization of documents. Previously, large-format contactless scanners, fireproof pockets for documents, heaters and generators were sent.

Volunteers of the Spanish charitable organization Fundación Amigos De Galicia were handed over about 3K canned fish. Over 1,6K people received them. This humanitarian aid was delivered to IDPs, as well as to residential institutions in Rivne oblast.

Ternopil oblast

The Ternopil Regional Center for Rehabilitation and Child Development in the first months of the invasion accepted 55 children from the Berizka children’s home in Kyiv oblast. Some of the children were put with families. Another 22 children remain in the institution and receive all the necessary help there.

In the RMA a meeting with representatives of the UN World Food Program was held. Effective coordination of supplying humanitarian aid within Ternopil oblast was discussed.

Ternopil developed a unique reconnaissance vehicle to control artillery damage and troop movement online. It was to the Armed Forces.

The RMA reported that Ternopil received 128 sets of utensils and 100 sets of bed linen for IDP hostels.

Two teams of the Ternopil Emergency Medical Center are returning from Kherson oblast. For two weeks, they provided aid to the local population.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Volunteers of the oblast sent a car for one of the military units of Khmelnytskyi oblast. It was possible to buy the car thanks to the cooperation of the NGO Support of Ukraine and the running club Race Expert. The car has been serviced and is ready to help soldiers defend the state.

Chernivtsi oblast

Two medical institutions of the oblast received ventilators from volunteers of the Red Cross Society of Ukraine.

The Chernivtsi Regional Perinatal Center received 5 petrol generators provided by the all-Ukrainian public organization of the Association of Neonatologists of Ukraine.The Chernivtsi Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital received humanitarian aid, namely, four pulse oximeters, a steam sterilizer and consumables (26 sets of the basic module). The medical equipment came from the International Organization for Migration (IOM)/UN Agency for Migration.

The State Archive of the Chernivtsi Region received humanitarian aid, namely, a generator, a dehumidifier, flashlights, portable chargers and acid-free paper, from the Heritage Rescue Headquarters and the oblast civic organization from Lviv – Tustan.

An office providing psychological aid and a children’s corner were opened in Khotyn.This was possible thanks to the international humanitarian organization Doctors of the World MdM.

The RMA reported that during another exchange of prisoners, two defenders from Bukovyna were released from russian captivity – Ihor Moroz and Mykhailo Staryi. 

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Minister of Defense of the Netherlands, Kaisy Ollongren, announced that his country provided military aid to Ukraine in the amount of EUR 1.07 billion. 

At the meeting of the Security Council, permanent representative of Ukraine to the UN, Serhii Kyslytsia, stated that Ukraine, together with over 30 states, will initiate a high-level event on February 22 at the UN headquarters in New York, dedicated to gross violations of human rights due to the russian war.

The British Ministry of Defense reported on Twitter that a group of Ukrainian military personnel arrived in Britain for training on the AS90 self-propelled artillery installation.

The Lithuanian army conducted a two-week training course for Ukrainian soldiers during which they were taught how to use a Swedish L70 anti-aircraft gun. The course for instructors of Ukrainian servicemen was conducted by the Military Law and Order Service.

The Airbus manufacturing company joined the investigation into the causes of the plane crash in Brovary. In particular, a group of Ukrainian experts went to France to take part in deciphering the flight recorders together with their French colleagues.
