War in Ukraine today: latest news, December 31, 2022 (photo)

It has been the 311th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6pm:   

From 12.40 to 14.30, the enemy inflicted a massive missile strike. According to preliminary data, a total of about 20 missile launches were carried out. Several of them did not reach Ukraine and fell on the territory of the russian federation (information is being clarified). Air defense forces of the Air Force destroyed 12 cruise missiles in Kyiv, Zhytomyr and Khmelnytsky oblasts. Also, in Kyiv oblast, an enemy Orlan-10 UAV, which carried out aerial reconnaissance during a missile attack and tried to detect the positions of our air defense, was shot down.

In addition, the occupiers conducted 12 attacks from multiple launch rocket systems, in particular, on the infrastructure of settlements in Donetsk and Kherson oblasts. 

There is still a threat of enemy air and missile strikes throughout Ukraine. Residents are recommended not to neglect the air alarms even on holidays.

The enemy does not cease the offensive towards Lyman and Bakhmut and makes attempts to improve the tactical position towards Kupiansk and Avdiivka.

Towards Volyn, Polissiya, Siversk and Sloboda, there were no signs of forming offensive enemy groups. 

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, artillery and mortar shelling was carried out in the areas of Khodyne, Atynske, Velyka Rybytsia, Zapsillia and Riasne of Sumy oblast and Udy, Strelecha, Alisivka, Krasne, Starytsia, Hatyshche, Vovchansk, Ternova and Katerynivka in Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy shelled the settlements of Lozova Persha, Zapadne, Masiutivka, Tokarivka, Kupiansk and Orlianske of Kharkiv oblast and Novoselivske, Stelmakhivka and Andriivka in Luhansk oblast.

Towards Lyman, Ploshchanka, Makiivka, Nevske and Dibrova of Luhansk oblast, as well as Chervonopopivka, Terny and Torske in Donetsk oblast, fell under fire influence.

Towards Bakhmut, more than 20 settlements were shelled, including Spirne, Soledar, Bakhmut, Bakhmutske, Kostiantynivka, Kurdiumivka, Maiorsk and Neu York of Donetsk oblast.

Towards Avdiivka sector, Vesele, Avdiivka, Nevelske, Marinka, Krasnohorivka and Novomykhailivka were shelled in the Donetsk region.

Towards Novopavlivka, Vremivka, Velyka Novosilka, Prechystivka, Vuhledar and Nikolske of Donetsk oblast came under enemy fire.

Towards Zaporizhzhia, the enemy fired tanks, mortars and barreled artillery in areas of more than 15 settlements, namely Olhivske, Huliaipole, Stepove, Charivne and Dorozhnianka of Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Towards Kherson, the civilian infrastructure of Antonivka, Tokarivka, Mykolaivka and Kherson was damaged by shelling.

The russian occupation forces strengthened the administrative and police regime for the period of New Year holidays in certain settlements of the temporarily occupied territory. Thus, from December 31, 2022 to January 6, 2023, the city of Henichesk, Kherson oblast, was closed for departure, and residents of the surrounding villages were banned from leaving. 

To fortify barriers in the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk, Luhansk and Kherson oblasts, the occupiers attract civilians from the russian federation.

Ukrainian aviation inflicted 6 strikes on buildups of invaders and 1 strike on the positions of enemy anti-aircraft missile systems. Our units of rocket troops and artillery hit 2 buildups of manpower and military equipment and a control point of the invaders.

Head of the President’s Office Andriy Yermak announced that there was another exchange of prisoners. Among them are 82 fighters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 15 from the TRO, 22 from the NGU, 11 from the Navy, 10 from the State Border Guard Service. 132 men and 8 women, 22 officers and 118 NCOs and soldiers. 

Mayor of Kyiv Vitalii Klytschko announced that russia has once again committed a massive terrorist missile strike resulted in one person killed and 21 injured in Kyiv. Injuries to victims are of varying degrees of severity, all provided medical assistance.

Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi informed that russia fired more than 20 cruise missiles at Ukraine. Air defense of Ukraine destroyed 12 cruise missiles: 6 within Kyiv, 5 – in Zhytomyr and 1 – in Khmelnytsky oblasts.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reports that occupiers continue shelling Kharkiv oblast with various types of weapons. At the same time, the Armed Forces do not see any offensive actions of the russian army towards Kharkiv. At least 15 settlements of Kharkiv oblast were shelled by the russian army on New Year’s Eve. 

According to Head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration Oleh Syniehubov, the enemy continues to terrorize the civilian population of Kharkiv oblast. Kupiansk and the Kupiansk region suffer the most from shelling. russian occupiers are also using artillery and mortars to hit the border settlements of Kharkiv and Chuhuiv oblasts.

Civilian infrastructure and residential buildings were damaged as a result of strikes on Kupiansk yesterday. A 76-year-old man was wounded. He was provided with medical aid on the spot. 

A 50-year-old man was killed in the Kupiansk region as a result of enemy shelling.

Mine clearance continues in the region. 71 explosive objects were neutralized. But the mine danger is still very high. 

Yesterday, in the Kharkiv region, a civilian car exploded on an unknown explosive device. The 65-year-old driver was killed.

Donetsk oblast

The russian military shelled Kramatorsk again in the afternoon on December 31. According to preliminary information, there are no dead and wounded. The russian army hit the industrial zone of the city.

The occupiers destroyed the Lyman police department in Donetsk oblast. A policeman was wounded as a result of the shelling. The Ukrainian flag survived in the building.

On the night of December 31, rescuers removed the body of a dead woman born in 1949 from under the rubble in one of the settlements of the Kramatorsk region. Before the arrival of rescuers, people rescued a 52-year-old man from under the rubble of the house. He was hospitalized in Sloviansk hospital.

A pit bull that was with the Ukrainian military at Azovstal in Mariupol was returned to Ukraine. After the military were evacuated from the plant in May, the dog was taken to russia.

Russians continued shelling the cities of Donetsk oblast at night and in the morning.

Towards Donetsk, sporadic attacks took place in Marinka and on the outskirts of the Ocheretyne community. Two people were wounded in Dalne of the Kurakhove community private houses and outbuildings were damaged in the village.

Towards Horlivka, the russians launched a missile attack on Kostiantynivka, damaging a transport company and a private house, without casualties. There was shelling on the outskirts of Toretsk and Soledar communities.

Towards Lysychansk, 1 person was killed and 1 wounded in Dibrova of the Lyman community. Lyman itself suffered 3 missile attacks. 2 houses were destroyed, the buildings of the enterprise were damaged. According to preliminary information, there is one wounded in the town. In addition, Pereizne of the Zvanivka community came under fire no casualties.

During December 30, the russian military shelled 14 settlements of Donetsk oblast. A 13-year-old child was wounded as a result of artillery shelling of Dalne village. The russian army shelled Avdiivka 15 times, where 29 houses were destroyed and damaged.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, Head of the Donetsk Military Administration reports that over the past day it became known about 3 civilians killed by russians in Donetsk oblast: 2 in Bakhmut and 1 in Dibrova. Another 3 people were wounded in the oblast. 

Vitalii Barabash, Head of the Avdiivka RMA says that half a thousand people returned to Avdiivka in November and December.

Luhansk oblast

Over the last day our troops repelled the occupants’ attacks near Stelmakhivka, Nevske, Chervonopopivka and Bilohorivka. Towards Kupiansk, russians fired at the areas of Novoselivske and Stelmakhivka. Towards Lyman, Ploschanka, Nevske, Dibrova and Chervonopopivka came under enemy fire.

Head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration Serhii Haidai reports that russians in Luhansk oblast are exhausted due to their own ridiculous tactics. 

The Luhansk Regional Military Administration informs that customs officers and the FSB remain to work on the border between the occupied Luhansk oblast and the russian federation. The law of the russian federation recognizing Ukrainian court decisions on debt collection will be in force in the so-called LPR.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Mayor of Kyiv Vitalii Klyschko announced that 1 person was killed, and 20 more injured due the russian attack on civilian objects in the capital. 14 victims were hospitalized, six treated by medics on the spot. Among the injured is a journalist from Japan, who is currently hospitalized.

An explosion rang out between residential buildings in the Solomianskyi district, a russian rocket hit a hotel near the “Palace of Ukraine” metro station and a residential building in the Pecherskyi district. There was also destruction in the Holosiivskyi and Dniprovskyi districts of the capital. The buildings of two schools and kindergartens in Kyiv suffered varying degrees of damage.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba said that russia’s massive missile strike deliberately targeted residential areas, not even energy infrastructure. The war criminal putin ‘is celebrating New Year’s Day by murdering people.

The capital’s life support system is working normally. According to the KCSA, 30% of consumers are without electricity due to emergency shutdowns.

The Kyiv City Military Administration reported that the russians have carried out 52 air attacks on Kyiv to date. More than 600 buildings were damaged, and the critical infrastructure of the city suffered significant destruction. Since February 24, the war has killed 120 Kyiv residents, including 5 children. 495 residents were injured, 30 of them were children.

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, 638 air raid sirens have sounded in the capital. The total duration of alarms is 693 hours and 49 minutes (almost 29 days). That is, the residents of the city spent an entire calendar month in bomb shelters.

The KCSA reported that about 230 employees of the Municipal Guard will be protecting public order during the New Year holidays in Kyiv and at communally owned facilities. Mobile rapid response teams will patrol the sectors of the capital assigned to them, and rescuers are ready to provide assistance to residents around the clock.

Zhytomyr oblast

Head of the Zhytomyr RMA, Vitalii Bunechko announced that the Air Defense Forces shot down five missiles over the oblast launched by the russian army on December 31. According to him, energy workers are already restoring the power supply to settlements where shutdowns were introduced to secure the system in case of a missile strike. All residents of the oblast will celebrate the New Year with light.

During the New Year’s weekend, additional police patrols will work on the streets of towns and villages of Zhytomyr oblast. At the same time, law enforcement officers remind us of the rules of conduct in wartime, the prohibition of pyrotechnics and restriction of movement during the curfew.

Head of the Zhytomyr RMA Vitalii Bunechko announced that about 10K people used Invincibility Centres in the oblast. Heating stations work around the clock and are equipped with everything necessary.

Sumy oblast

Head of the Sumy RMA Dmytro Zhivytskyi reported that the enemy made 139 strikes on the border of Sumy oblast.

The Myropillia community was shelled three times. There were 18 mortar and artillery attacks. A school, a kindergarten, a boiler room and a club were damaged.

As a result of the mortar shelling of the Bilopillia community totalling to10 hits, the property of the psychoneurological boarding school was damaged: a workshop, a harvester and agricultural equipment.

The Krasnopillia community suffered 78 attacks from Hrad MLRS, artillery and mortars. Explosives were also dropped from a drone.

The occupiers attacked the Esman community with small arms – 20 machine gun bursts, and Shalyhine was shelled with mortars – 12 hits.

The Krasnopillia community came under shelling from the russian military: 3 hits were recorded.

Head of the Sumy RMA Dmytro Zhyvytskyi announced that electricity supply was restored in Sumy oblast, which was stopped due to the threat of missile attacks. No shutdowns are planned during December 31. 105 homes of the Seredino-Buda community remain without electricity due to damaged lines, their restoration is underway.

The Lebedyn City Council reported that local employees purchased two generators, a chainsaw, and lubricants for the Armed Forces at their own expense. The aid was transferred to one of the military units.

More than 2K volunteers joined the Dobrobat volunteer movement in Sumy oblast. The movement was founded in the spring after the de-occupation of Sumy oblast and aims to restore the affected territories. Volunteers of two detachments – Sumy and Romny – have already made more than 70 visits to damaged objects. In their free time, volunteers make trench candles, weave camouflage nets and hold events in support of the Armed Forces.

Chernihiv oblast

The ‘North’ Operational Command reported that the russian military killed a civilian woman during the shelling of the city of Semenivka in Chernihiv oblast.

Head of the Chernihiv RMA Viacheslav Chaus announced that the occupiers fired a missile at one of the military towns in Chernihiv oblast. According to preliminary data, the attack was carried out by an Iskander ballistic missile.

The State Service of Ukraine reported that the border guards of the Chernihiv oblast were provided with Senator APC armored combat vehicles. The vehicles came as aid from international partners. The glass of the cars produced by the Canadian enterprise Roshel Defense Solutions can withstand shots from a .50-caliber weapon, and the body can withstand detonation of grenades or mines. Currently, Ukraine has received about 100 such cars.

The ‘North’ Operational Command received medical first-aid kits, frameless turnstiles and equipped backpacks for combat medics from benefactors. Assistance was provided by the organization Charitable Fund. Mercy and Health.

The Ichnia City Council reported that a large family from the Ichnia community received a new home instead of the one destroyed by the occupiers. The house of the Kovalenko family from the village of Krupychpole, which is raising 8 children, burned down at the end of February after being hit by a russian tank. The public organization Rotary Club helped to finance the construction.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

According to Head of the Regional Council Mykola Lukashuk, overnight russians attacked the Nikopol region three times. They fired about 20 missiles from heavy artillery at Marhanets and Myrove communities. 

Vinnytsia oblast

Another humanitarian shipment from partners from the Mazovian Voivodeship of the Republic of Poland arrived in Vinnytsia oblast. They handed over 22 generators of various capacities and lubricant for their work.

Kirovohrad oblast

The last distribution of humanitarian kits for internally displaced families this year took place at the Kirovohrad Regional Philharmonic. In addition, several hundred children watched the interactive fairy tale “The Grinch who Stole the New Year’s Holiday” at the Philharmonic.

Poltava oblast

Head of the Poltava Regional State Administration, Dmytro Lunin, reported that volunteers of Poltava oblast  handed over two buses and one passenger car, as well as six heat guns to the military.

Cherkasy oblast

Head of the Cherkasy Regional State Administration, Ihor Taburets, said that in Cherkasy Oblast, a drone  was given to the military as a New Year’s gift to multiply  the enemy’s losses.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the National Police, the occupiers shelled civilian infrastructure in 16 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. There were 10 reports of the destruction of civilian houses and infrastructure as a result of shelling by the russian military.

Head of the RMA Oleksandr Starukh also informed that as a result of the massive rocket attack on December 31, 2 private houses were partially destroyed, and about 8 more damaged. As a result of the explosion, the following were injured: 1 man, 2 women (one of them is pregnant), and a child. The girl is in critical condition in intensive care.

Due to russian shelling, a backup power line was cut off at ZNPP. This was reported by the IAEA. It is noted that the extent of damage has not yet been determined, but work to restore the line is underway. Currently, the Zaporizhzhia NPP continues to receive electricity, which is necessary for reactor cooling and other important nuclear safety functions, from the only 750 KV external power line remaining at the plant.

Mykolaiv oblast

Head of the Regional Administration Vitaliy Kim said that yesterday, as a result of the russian shelling in one of the settlements of the Kutsurubska community, residential houses and household buildings were damaged.

Mayor of the city, Oleksandr Senkevych said that as a result of the massive shelling of Ukraine by russian missiles, two houses were destroyed and 12 more damaged. The roofs of three educational institutions were damaged, a fire broke out in a garage cooperative of 150 square meters, and 25 rescuers are working at the scene. This was reported by the State Emergencies Service. Vitaliy Kim informed that currently there are 6 wounded in the city. 3 of them are hospitalized.

Odesa oblast

Head of the Odesa Regional State Administration Maksym Marchenko said that due to the massive missile strike on Ukraine, the power supply in Odesa was limited. According to him, it was necessary to reduce the load on the power system. 

Chief Prosecutor of Odesa oblast Serhiy Kostenko said that since February 24, more than 70 facts of russian shelling of civilian and critical infrastructure in Odesa oblast had been officially recorded. As a result, there were 111 hits, not including the missiles shot down by Ukrainian Air Defense Forces. After that, there were two more massive attacks and several hits. The killing of 32 civilians, including two small children, is under investigation. 96 residents of the oblast were hospitalized and injured, including 13 children. About 1K residents suffered damage and destruction of their property.

Kherson oblast

Yaroslav Yanushevych, Head of the Military Administration, said that russian occupiers shelled Kherson oblast 60 times over the past day. The enemy fired at peaceful settlements of the oblast from artillery, MLRS, mortars, and tanks. The city of Kherson was attacked by the russian army 31 times. Enemy shells hit a gas pipeline, and private and apartment buildings. Two people were wounded. In Chornobaivka, occupiers shelled exclusively civilian objects: a gym, a boiler house, a kindergarten, and an administrative services building. 

Also, according to the RMA, children were injured during a massive attack on December 31, as a result of russian shelling in Kherson oblast. On New Year’s Eve, russian enemies shelled Nadniprianske village near Kherson with artillery. A shell exploded near a school. There were two children on the street – a 13-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl who received severe shrapnel wounds. Now the children are in the operating room where surgeons are fighting for their lives.

Law enforcement officers in Kherson oblast reported that they exhumed the body of a woman killed by russian occupiers. Prosecutors, together with police investigators and experts in the framework of criminal proceedings, exhumed and examined the body of a 56-year-old woman killed by the occupiers. It was established that in September 2022, during the occupation of Pravdyne village, the russian military drove heavy equipment into the yard of a local resident. When the woman began to express discontent, the russians shot her with automatic weapons. Later, the victim was buried by her fellow villagers. Her body has been sent for forensic examination.

The Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets told the details of the terrible findings in Kherson oblast. According to him, currently, Ukraine has only preliminary information about forcibly taken citizens, because russia does not provide information. According to the Geneva Convention, russia cannot hold civilians hostage at all without charging them. But russians keep and torment people, depriving them of food and medical care. It is about thousands of Ukrainian citizens who were taken to hide the evidence of brutal torture by the russians. As of now, there are more than 5K people who have been subjected to illegal actions by the russian military, and this figure is growing every day. There are also people subjected to crimes of sexual violence, including women who are not yet ready to tell law enforcement about it. Also, according to the Ombudsman, for the first time, torture chambers for children were found in Kherson. 

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The RMA reported that damage to Volyn’s environment caused by russian troops as a result of a missile strike on March 27 amounted to UAH 49.4 million.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine, Iryna Vereshchuk, is in Zakarpattia on a working trip. During the visit, a meeting was held on the issue of attracting donor resources to implement the strategy of energy decentralization, integration of green energy projects, support of local business, etc.

Zakarpattia oblast

Zakarpattia presented its own digital humanitarian and communication portal. On the portal, everyone can find or add the necessary information, namely, vacancies, humanitarian aid, business support, housing, social support, donation, assistance to the Armed Forces and much more.

In Uzhgorod, Ukrainians who suffered in the war receive New Year’s gifts from German benefactors. Only those who packed them know what is in the boxes. The big campaign Christmas Gift for Ukraine among German citizens was organized by PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

300 entrepreneurs of Ivano-Frankivsk oblast received compensation for employing IDPs. UAH 6.1 million have already been paid to the employers of the oblast for employing 514 IDPs.

The night power limit for the oblast on December 31 is unlimited. The daily limit is 345.5 MW. The shutdowns last 2 hours during the day. 2 hour shutdowns are possible in the event of a significant load increase.

Lviv oblast

5 cars for medical evacuation, 5 ambulances and 700 sets of winter uniforms were sent from Lviv oblast for defenders. The aid was purchased by SoftServe’s Open Eyes CF. It was handed over by the 1K Cars of Freedom initiative and the Drive for Life project of this charitable foundation.

The RMA reported that as part of the 1K Cars of Freedom initiative, an ambulance was sent to the military of Donetsk oblast.

Ukrzaliznytsia launched a fabulous retro train in Lviv. It will run on the route Lviv-Briukhovychi-Lviv on December 31 and January 1, 7, 8, 14, 15.

Rivne oblast

On New Year’s Eve, almost 600 policemen will ensure law and order in Rivne oblast. In addition, the National Guard and military personnel will be involved in ensuring public safety and order.

In the City Council of Rivne, a meeting with the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Ukraine, Anka Feldhuzen, was held. The ambassador handed over 28 units of specialized equipment, namely, lifts, manipulator cranes, fuel fillers, dump trucks, tankers, trucks with generators, for the Emergency Services of Rivne oblast. Of them, 5 will remain in Rivne oblast, the others will go to divisions of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

Ternopil oblast

During the air alert in Ternopil oblast, the air defense system was activated. Details are not disclosed.

724 sets were received by general secondary education institutions of Ternopil oblast from the UN UNICEF fund. They will be used by schools with fewer than 100 students. Each box weighs almost 48 kilograms. Its content is designed for 40 students. The set contains a large number of different school and stationery items, namely, markers, brushes, chalk, pens, pencils, rulers, notebooks, etc.

Together with Army Aid from Ternopil mobile dentistry went to Kharkiv and Donetsk oblast. Medicals of the Ternopil city dental polyclinic are already treating defenders.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

During the air alert, the enemy shelled the territory of the Khmelnytskyi community. As a result of the shelling, at least 4 people were injured.

In Khmelnytskyi, the curfew on New Year’s Eve does not change. Restrictions apply from midnight to 05:00.

According to the RMA order, the use of salutes, fireworks, pyrotechnic products and explosive devices in the territory of the oblast is prohibited during the martial law in Ukraine.

Chernivtsi oblast

The City Council reported that students and preschool children of Chernivtsi collected and handed over almost UAH 4 million for the needs of the military, IDPs and people from the liberated territories. For this, the children gave concerts, sold homemade pastries and handicrafts.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The Czech Republic sent 6 temporary bridge structures this year. 4 of them have been installed on state roads in Kyiv, Cherkasy, and Kharkiv oblasts, and 2 more bridges are planned to be installed in Kherson oblast. In 2023, Ukraine expects 12 more similar bridges from the Czech Republic.

Rescue workers from Estonia sent demining equipment worth over EUR 337K to Ukraine. Among the equipment sent by the department in response to Kyiv’s international request are three mini-excavators with trailers, four remote demining machines and one chemical substance detector.

The Norwegian State Road Administration provided Ukravtodor with 10 temporary bridge structures. Their arrival is expected in January 2023.

In his New Year’s address, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised to continue to support Ukraine.
