War in Ukraine today: latest news, December 30, 2022 (photo)

It has been the 310th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

Russian invaders launched 16 airstrikes, 15 of which hit civilian infrastructure. The enemy used 8 Shahed-136 UAVs. All of them were shot down. In addition, the enemy launched 17 MLRS attacks. Civilians were killed by artillery fire.

The enemy continues to conduct offensive operations towards Lyman and Bakhmut and tries to improve the tactical position towards Kupiansk and Avdiivka.

The situation is stable towards Volyn, Polissia, Siversk and Sloboda. No signs of forming enemy offensive groups were detected. The areas of Semenivka and Zaliznyi Mist settlements, Chernihiv oblast were shelled. Zapsillia and Velyka Rybytsia, Sumy oblast, as well as Morokhovets, Ternova, Starytsa, Vovchansk, Bochkove, Chuhunivka and Zarubinka, Kharkiv oblast were struck.

Towards Kupiansk, Kamianka, Dvorichna, Vilshana, Kupiansk, Kotliarivka and Tabaivka, Kharkiv oblast and Novoselivske and Stelmakhivka, Luhansk oblast were hit.

Towards Lyman, the enemy fired at Nevsky and Dibrova, Luhansk oblast, as well as Chervonopivka and Torske, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Bakhmut, the areas of the settlements of Spirne, Berestove, Soledar, Bakhmutske, Pidhorodne, Bakhmut, Kostyantynivka, Bila Hora, Kurdiumivka, Druzhba, Maiorsk and New York, Donetsk oblast were struck.

Vesele, Avdiivka, Nevelske, Maryinka and Novomykhailivka, Donetsk oblast were hit towards Avdiivka.

Towards Novopavlivsk, the enemy fired at Vuhledar, Prechystivka, and Vremivka, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Zaporizhzhia, Temyrivka, Huliaipole, Dorozhnianka, Novoandriivka, Stepove, Kamianske and Stepnohirsk, Zaporizhzhia oblast and Nikopol and Prymiske, Dnipropetrovsk oblast were affected by enemy fire.

Towards Kherson, the civilian infrastructure of Kachkarivka and Kherson was hit with MLRS. 

As of December 29, the hospital in Bilovodsk, Luhansk oblast, is full of wounded russian servicemen.

Up to 10 armed occupiers were wounded and eliminated in Donetsk oblast. In addition, 2 units of military equipment were destroyed, and 3 were damaged.

Our aircraft launched 5 strikes on areas where the occupiers were concentrated. “Orlan-10” enemy reconnaissance UAV was shot down.

Units of missile troops and artillery of the Defense Forces of Ukraine hit 6 areas of buildup of enemy manpower and military equipment, 5 ammunition warehouses and a radar station.

The Kyiv city mayor and head of Ukrainian city association Vitaliy Klychko informed that 30 mayors were kidnapped during the war, 7 among them are deemed to go missing. 

According to the Air Defense Forces, on the night of December 29-30, the Air Defense Forces of Ukraine brought down 16 kamikaze drones. The enemy was trying to use the riverbed of the Dnipro river to circumvent the air defense systems. 

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of Ukraine, towards Sloboda there are no signs of forming the russian assault groups. Towards Kupiansk, the invaders are trying to improve tactical positions. 13 settlements in Kharkiv oblast were shelled.  

According to Viacheslav Zadorenko, head of Derhachi RMA, during the offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in September electricians from Belgorod region left the auto tower on the territory of Kozacha Lopan. Technicians handed it over to the Ukrainian electricians which will be instrumental in restoring electricity in Kharkiv oblast. 

Head of the youth and sports department of the region, Kostiantyn Ananchenko, noted that the sports infrastructure of Kharkiv oblast, destroyed and damaged by the war, can’t be restored in one year. 

Oleh Syniehubov, head of Kharkiv RMA, informed that 1260 buildings in Kharkiv are left without heating supply as a result of enemy shelling. 

Kharkiv prosecutor’s office advised that in Borschova, Lypetsk community, a vehicle blew up on a mine, a 65-year-old was killed, and his spouse was hospitalized.  

According to the deputy head of the President’s office Kyrylo Tymoshenko, russian army shelled the village of Katerynivka, Kharkiv oblast. Two people were injured, two were killed. 

The enemy launched another barrage of missiles on the territory of Ukraine. Many enemy missiles were brought down by the air defense forces of Ukraine. However, some infrastructure facilities in Kharkiv and oblast were struck. 

As a result of missile strike, two civilian men aged 55 and 54 were killed, a 52-year-old man was hospitalized. He is in critical condition. 

The enemy shelled with artillery settlements located on the front and border line with russia in Kupiansk, Chuhuiv and Kharkiv regions. The enemy attack killed a 60-year-old man. 

Humanitarian de-mining continues. 29 explosive ordnance were defused. However, the mine danger remains very high. In Snizhnivka village, Izium district, a 43-year-old man exploded on an unknown explosive ordnance. He was hospitalized with injuries of moderate severity.

Donetsk oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, up to ten invaders were injured and killed in Donetsk oblast. Two units of military equipment were destroyed and three damaged. 

Head’s Councillor of Sloviansk City Military Administration, Svitlana Viunychenko, commented on Suspilne that there will be no torchlight procession on January 1, 2023. For seven years in a row, a procession dedicated to the anniversary of Stepan Bandera’s birthday has been held in the city.

Head of Kramatorsk City Military Administration, Oleksandr Honcharenko, reported that on the eve of the New Year, a monument to russian poet Alexander Pushkin was dismantled.

At night and in the morning russians continued shelling along the entire front line.

Towards Volnovakha, Vuhledar was under artillery fire again and in the middle of the night Bahatyr of Velyka Novosilka community suffered 2 rocket attacks; windows, doors and facade of the church were damaged, the outbuildings of the cafe destroyed. There were no casualties.

Towards Donetsk, it was loud in Kurakhove community; power lines were damaged in Hostre and in the morning there was a shelling of Dalne. There were isolated attacks on Avdiivka and Marinka.

Towards Horlivka, russians launched 4 rocket attacks on Kostiantynivka. Noone was injured, but a boarding school, a cinema and a dormitory suffered different degrees of damage. There were periodic shelling of the outskirts of Chasiv Yar and Soledar communities.

Towards Lysychansk, Serebrianka of Siversk community, Torske and Zarichne of  Lyman community were under attack, without casualties.

Head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko, informed that yesterday russians killed 1 civilian in Bakhmut.

Luhansk oblast

Yesterday, Defence Forces repelled enemy attacks in Bilohorivka and Stelmakhivka. Towards Kupiansk and Lyman, Chervonopopivka, Dibrova, Kovalivka, Makiivka, Nevske, Novoiehorivka and Ploshchanka were targeted. The enemy struck near Dibrova with aviation.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the hospital in the temporarily occupied Bilovodsk, Starobilsk region is overcrowded with injured invaders.

Head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, Serhii Haidai, said that there are no breakthroughs, but the Armed Forces of Ukraine are advancing towards Kreminna and Svatove. According to him, many of those who are surrendering are residents of the occupied Luhansk oblast recently mobilised by russians. The enemy appoints the fourth commander towards Kreminna and Svatove. The head of the RMA also noted that our troops have captured 52 russians recently. The situation in Bilohorivka has stabilized. Our troops gained a foothold there. They control the situation and repel all enemy attacks.

Based on the information provided by the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, two more residents of Luhansk oblast were killed as a result of russian shelling. Residents of Hirske – an elderly man and his daughter – were killed by russian fire in mid-May. As of today, it is known about 417 civilians whose lives were interrupted by enemy weapons in the region. In fact, there are many more facts and evidence.

Defence Forces of Ukraine liberated Novoselivske village, but this information has not been confirmed by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

At night, the capital withstood the attack of the Iranian UAVs “Shahed”. Air defense shot down 5 kamikaze drones over Kyiv. As reported by the Kyiv City State Administration, the air attack took place after yesterday’s missile attack, which failed to bring results to the aggressor. The russian attack partially destroyed an administrative building in Holosiivskyi district and damaged a residential building.

The State Emergency Service reported that rescuers were eliminating the consequences of a terrorist missile attack on the capital that took place on December 29. The hits were reported from Darnytskyi, Pecherskyi, Solomianskyi, and Holosiivskyi districts of the capital. In total, 5 units of basic and special fire and rescue equipment, as well as 27 personnel units were involved at the scene.

The mayor of Kyiv Vitaliy Klychko informed that residents are already returning to the restored buildings of the capital, damaged during the russian missile attacks. He noted that almost 700 buildings in the city have been damaged since February 24. About UAH 800 million has been allocated from the budget to restore buildings and infrastructure facilities.

The Regional Employment Center announced that 621 new jobs will be created in Kyiv oblast under the state program “eRobota”. 121 entrepreneurs and 34 legal entities will expand their businesses and open new manufacturing facilities. 72 people will start their own enterprises. The total amount of funds to be received exceeds UAH 51 million.

The curfew will not be canceled in Kyiv on New Year’s Eve. It will be forbidden to move around the city by transport or on foot without a special permit from 23:00 to 05:00. For security reasons, no mass celebrations are planned in the city. 

Just before the New Year, Kyiv received a new, state-of-the-art MAN fire truck for foam fire extinguishing. According to the head of the Kyiv City State Administration Vitali Klychko, the vehicle was financed by German partners and manufactured in Poland within the shortest possible time.

Kyiv RMA informed that the capital received materials and equipment to ensure heating supply. Logstor International (Poland) provided insulated pipes and components for emergency repair of the heating network in Vidradnyi district.

The crimes committed by the russian military during the evacuation of people who found themselves under occupation in Kyiv oblast are revealed in the episode of the documentary series #КиївськийФорпост (#KyivOutpost). According to the Kyiv RMA, the authors of the movie managed to collect testimonies of volunteers, rescuers, survivors, relatives and friends of the victims.

Zhytomyr oblast

The elderly and persons with reduced mobility from Kherson have been evacuated to Zhytomyr oblast. According to Yaroslav Yanushevych, head of Kherson RMA, 35 residents of Kherson, who were receiving services in the territorial centers of district councils, traveled to Korosten by train accompanied by social workers. Here they will be placed in social institutions, where they will be safe and will receive the necessary care and assistance.

Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration reported that there are 349 Invincibility Centers in the oblast, which operate around the clock. 295 are permanent locations and 54 are mobile centers located in the administrative facilities of communities, as well as in educational and health care institutions. There are also 164 Invincibility Centers maintained by socially responsible businesses and 46 facilities with generators, namely pharmacies, bank branches, shops, cafes, restaurants, and gas stations.

The Zhytomyr RMA reported that UAH 11.6 million of compensation was paid from the state budget to residents of the region for sheltering internally displaced persons. They noted that this compensation is paid in a timely manner and in full.

It was reported on the official website of the Olevsk territorial community that UAH 10K were raised for the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the New Year’s charity fair in the Lopatychy lyceum. During the event, there was a festive performance and a fair, where homemade pastries, various delicacies, handmade jewelry, and crafts were sold. 

Sumy oblast

The head of Sumy RMA Dmytro Zhyvytskyi reported that yesterday the enemy launched 51 attacks on the border of Sumy oblast. The invaders fired mortars at the Bilopillia community; a private house was damaged. Explosives were dropped from a drone over Krasnopillia community. There were also two mortar attacks. Velyka Pysarivka community was hit by unguided air missiles. Ukrainian air defense shot down two cruise missiles over Sumy oblast.

In the evening of December 29, Shalyhyne community came under enemy mortar fire. There were 15 incoming strikes. Around midnight, Znob-Novhorodske community was shelled with self-propelled artillery systems. There were 19 incoming shells.

In the morning of December 30, the russian troops shelled Miropyllia region with mortars. There were a total of 60 incoming shells. A kindergarten, a school and a community hall were damaged.

This morning, at 10 am, the rolling blackouts schedule resumed in Sumy oblast. This was reported by the Sumyoblenergo company. The electricity will be provided in the +4/-2 mode.

In Hlukhiv, rescuers provided uninterrupted water supply to the hemodialysis department of the central city hospital during a power outage due to massive rocket attacks on Ukraine. With the help of autonomous pumps, 2.5 tons of water were delivered to medical water tanks.

Family doctors in Trostianets community received medical uniforms. The uniforms were provided by the National Humanitarian Aid Agency ZDOROVI.

Chernihiv oblast

The State Border Guard Service reported that yesterday the invaders attacked Novhorod-Siverskyi and Semenivka communities. Mortars, cannon artillery and rockets were used for the attacks.

The ‘North’ Operational Command informed that during the day russian troops shelled the town of Semenivka with barrel artillery. A civilian woman was killed.

The AFU shot down an enemy UAV over Chernihiv oblast. This time the Ukrainian air force destroyed an ‘Orlan’, a russian-made multipurpose UAV designed for reconnaissance in hard-to-reach areas. This UAV costs around 100K dollars.

The hospital in Sosnytsia community received a portable charging station of a well-known American brand from benefactors. The assistance was provided by the German foundation GIZ. The station was transferred to the intensive care department to ensure the continuous provision of medical services.

The police and the State Emergency Service of Chernihiv oblast are conducting joint raids to expose the illegal sale of fireworks. There is a ban on the sale and use of such items during martial law in the oblast. The decision was adopted on December 22 this year.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Head of the DRC Mykola Lukashuk announced that the “South” Air Defense Forces also shot down 5 enemy UAVs in Dnipropetrovsk oblast during the night. When it comes to artillery shelling, Nikopol region was  attacked again. The occupiers hit Marhanets community with heavy artillery last night. 

Prominent Italian civilian servant and politician Giovanni Kessler visited Dnipro to congratulate internally displaced children on the upcoming holidays. He also expressed his condolences to the indomitable Ukrainians about difficult times and respect from the people of Italy. The children who came from Volnovakha, Lysychansk, Bakhmut, Energodar were extremely happy with the gifts. Every kid received a humanitarian package with new warm clothes.

Vinnytsia oblast

Vinnytsia Mayor Serhii Morhunov met with volunteers from Schemmerhofen community in Germany, who brought aid to Vinnytsia.

Vinnytsia City Council informed that local musicians collected donations and, together with Iryna Frenkel from Vinnytsia, organized a charity concert in support of Ukraine. The all-Ukrainian youth jazz band, which was created as part of the Vinnytsia Jazzfest and evacuated to Europe, gave 38 concerts to raise funds for special transport for the city of Vinnytsia. As a result, an ambulance, medicines and a charging station were handed over to our hospitals. In addition, volunteers visited the Mother and Child Center because they had prepared gifts for the children.

Head of the Vinnytsia Regional Council, Viacheslav Sokolovyi, said that the soldiers of the 120th Territorial Defense Brigade of Vinnytsia, who are currently at the front, were provided with warm clothes, sleeping bags, winter gloves and berets, which can withstand cold up to 10 degrees.

Kirovohrad oblast

In the social hostel in Kropyvnytskyi, where internally displaced persons live, a room for recreation and sports will be built. It is designed for both adults and children. Volunteers helped to arrange the room. 

Non-governmental organizations “The Tenth of April” and “ACTED Ukraine” purchased sofas, a children’s mat, tables, chairs, board games, a TV, toy cabinets, children’s poufs and tables, sports equipment.

Poltava oblast

Dmytro Lunin, the head of the Poltava Regional State Administration, announced that another 1,320 sets of clothing were handed over to the soldiers of the Territorial Defense Brigade in Poltava oblast. Among the items are winter jackets, pants, hats, underwear, mittens for a total of UAH 16.7 million.

Dmytro Lunin, the head of the Poltava Regional State Administration, announced that the unique rehabilitation system “Walkbot” from South Korea will soon start working at the Rehabilitation Medicine Center at the regional hospital. It is manufactured by only one company in the world. The new device will help people to return to a full life after military injuries, patients after strokes, paresis, people with diseases of the nervous and musculoskeletal system.

Cherkasy oblast

In Cherkasy Oblast, with the support of the MHP-Hromadi Foundation, the Regional Development Agency purchased a large batch of STARLINK telecommunications equipment. 37 sets have already been sent to the districts.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

The situation towards Zaporizhzhia has not significantly changed. The enemy concentrates its main efforts on holding the occupied borders.

On the night of December 30, the air defense forces of Ukraine repelled an attack by russian kamikaze drones in Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts. This was reported by the Eastern Air Command. 9 Shakhed UAVs and 1 Marlin UAV were destroyed.

Yesterday, on December 29, the occupiers shelled civilian infrastructure in Huliaipole, Poltavka, Stepove, Orikhiv, Zaliznychne, Charivne, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka, Dorozhnianka, Olhivske, Malynivka, Stepnohirsk, Stepove, Novoandriivka, Bilohirya, Temyirivka, Mali Shcherbaky, Kamianske. The police received 23 reports about the destruction of houses (apartments) and infrastructure objects as a result of shelling by russian military personnel.

Volunteers are restoring houses damaged by enemy attacks in the village of Stepne, Zaporizhzhia region. First of all, volunteers help pensioners and lonely people. Construction materials are provided by charity organizations. A team of 5-10 volunteers arrives every day to fix what can be restored.

Mykolaiv oblast

Mykolayiv RMA reported on the consequences of yesterday’s enemy attacks on the region. Yesterday, December 29, a warehouse of a private enterprise in Koblivka community was destroyed as a result of rocket attack. During the day, the enemy launched artillery strikes on the water area and the port area of the Ochakiv community. There are no casualties.

Also yesterday, on December 29, as a result of rocket fire, an infrastructure facility and residential buildings were damaged in Voskresensk community.

The curfew time is being changed in Snihurivka community. From December 31, a curfew is introduced and a special light masking regime is established in the mode of total blackout from 21:00 to 06:00.

Odesa oblast

The German government handed over two industrial generators with a capacity of 1250 kW each to Odesa. They will ensure uninterrupted operation of two boiler houses that provide heat for 60,000 citizens. Odesa also received seven generators with a capacity of 450 kW each. One of them will be installed at the pumping station of Khadzhibey estuary dam.

Kherson oblast

On the morning of December 30, the russian army once again shelled Beryslav. The shells hit the yard next to the high-rise building. The blast wave and shrapnel from the shells broke the windows of the house. A little later, the private sector in Beryslav was shelled.

Yesterday, December 29, the russian occupiers shelled Kherson oblast 81 times. The enemy struck the regional center 27 times. Enemy shells hit the store, critical infrastructure facilities, industrial enterprises, private and apartment buildings. One person was injured.

The police opened 34 criminal proceedings on the facts of war crimes committed by the russian military in Kherson oblast. The police continue to receive reports of looting by the russian military during the occupation of populated areas. For example, the russian military stole almost 4,000 tons of the 2020 wheat harvest and 406 tons of rapeseed from warehouses in Arkhangelsk village. The russian military damaged and stole more than 1,700 meters of aluminum overhead power line wires with a total weight of more than 1,900 kg in Kniazivka village.

Kherson RMA reported that the power supply was resumed in Beryslav city. 

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The Lutsk City Council sent aid, namely thermal underwear, sleeping bags, sleeping bags, clothes, medical products, food products and personal hygiene products, to the soldiers of the Sonechko battalion.

In November this year, the Lutsk community used half as much electricity for street lighting than in the same period last year. And thanks to this, it was possible to save over UAH 1 million per month.

The RMA reported that the President presented the Golden Star order to the relatives of the fallen Hero from Volyn Vitalii Parkhomuk.

Zakarpattia oblast

The Uzhhorod City Council sent aid, namely thermal socks, gloves, gas compensators and cylinders for them, lanterns, hygiene products, medicines, food products, etc., to the soldiers of the A1778 military unit at the front.

In Uzhhorod, children whose families are in difficult life circumstances and children under care received necessary products and sweets purchase by benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The RMA reported that the Security Service of Ukraine has started a pretrial investigation under the article “violation of the laws and customs of war” due to the shelling of civilian facilities in Prykarpattia by the russian occupiers.

The RMA reported that benefactors will help restore the home of a family from Prykarpattia, who suffered from yesterday’s rocket fire.

The proven night limit for the region on December 30 is unlimited. This allows it to pass the night time of the day, from midnight to 07:00 without shutdowns. The daily limit is 304.8 MW, so shutdown queues are foreseen.

This year, over 70 industrial enterprises were relocated to Ivano-Frankivsk oblast. 48 enterprises have resumed operations in new areas, another 15 are determining how to transport and select locations for continuing operations.

Lviv oblast

After yesterday’s shelling, the energy industry technically ensured the possibility of supplying electricity to all consumers of the region, but the networks cannot withstand the load. Repair work is ongoing. The most difficult situation remains in Lviv and surrounding communities, as well as in part of the Yavorsk region.

In Lviv RMA, a meeting of the Regional Defense Council was held. They discussed ensuring law and order during New Year’s and Christmas events.

In RMA, a working group on decommunization was created. During the first meeting, they discussed the challenges of decommunization in Lviv oblast and proposals to solve them.

Over UAH 16 million from the regional budget was used to increase the energy efficiency of territorial communities of Lviv oblast. The funds were allocated within the framework of the Comprehensive Program for Increasing Energy Efficiency, Energy Saving and Development of Renewable Energy in Lviv Oblast for 2021-2025.

The Novoiarychiv settlement territorial community received a generator with a capacity of 160 Kv. It was donated by the CORE CF, headed by the famous actor and film director Sean Penn.

The Coordinating Headquarters for Treatment of Prisoners of War opens a new phone number for the consultation line. From now on, citizens will have more opportunities to get advice about captured or missing relatives under special circumstances.

The RMA reported that at the charity fair in the Popovytsk boarding school, funds were collected for sets of thermal underwear for the Armed Forces.

President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, conferred the title of Hero of Ukraine with awarding the Golden Star order to Master Sergeant Dmytro Bublyk. The order was awarded for personal courage and heroism, demonstrated in the defense of state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

Rivne oblast

The city of Rivne received an additional grant of €100K to implement the Strategy for the Development of Culture of Rivne until the 2030s, thanks to the grant program EU4Culture with the financial support of the European Union. The organizers in Rivne are the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Rivne City Council and the NGO Agency for Sustainable Development of the City.

The RMA reported that during the year, over half a thousand military personnel received help at the Rivne Regional Hospital.

Ternopil oblast

On New Year’s Eve, Army Aid from Ternopil is sent to Kharkiv and Donetsk oblasts. Volunteers carry 60 parcels from family and friends to the military, as well as small bottles, generators, food, thermal clothing, etc.

In Ternopil, employees of the Ternopilmiskteplokomunenergo will modernize the networks of the unified system of centralized heat supply. The work will be carried out thanks to recently received international assistance within the framework of the Energy Security Project of Ukraine, which is financed by the United States Agency for International Development USAID.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Two communities in Kherson oblast (Darivsk and Muzykivsk communities ) will receive financial assistance (3 million and 2 million respectively) from the oblast budget of Khmelnytskyi. These communities are designated as subordinates of Khmelnytskyi oblast, therefore the oblast will help them to restore local infrastructure, and local residents to survive this winter, after long months of occupation.

Chernivtsi oblast
