War in Ukraine today: latest news, December 26, 2022 (photo)

It has been the 306th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression.

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6pm:   

The enemy carried out 19 MLRS attacks from rocket salvo systems. There is still a threat of enemy air and missile strikes launched throughout Ukraine.

The occupiers continue to focus their efforts on conducting offensive actions towards Bakhmut and Lyman. Towards Kupiansk, Avdiivka, and Zaporizhzhia, they are trying to improve their tactical position. The enemy is defending towards Novopavlivka and Kherson.

Towards Volyn, Polissia, Siversk, and Sloboda, the situation has not changed significantly, and there are no signs of enemy offensive groups being formed.

Towards Sloboda, Starytsia, Ohirtseve, Vovchansk, and Ridkodub of Kharkiv oblast were hit by artillery fire.

Towards Kupyansk and Lyman, the enemy inflicted fire damage in the areas of more than 20 settlements, namely Novomlynsk, Dvorichna, Zapadne, Tabaivka and Berestove in Kharkiv oblast; Ploshchanka and Dibrova in Luhansk oblast and Torske in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Bakhmut and Avdiivka, the enemy shelled the areas of more than 30 settlements, namely Berestove, Bilohorivka, Soledar, Bakhmut, Niu York, Avdiivka, Vesele, Nevelske, Marinka and Novomykhailivka of Donetsk oblast.

Towards Novopavlivka, Prechystivka, Velyka Novosilka and Vremivka in Donetsk oblast came under enemy fire.

Towards Zaporizhzhia, the enemy shelled more than 15 settlements with tanks, mortars, barrel and rocket artillery. Among them are Novopil in the Donetsk oblast and Olhivske, Malynivka, Dorozhnyanka, Charivne, Bilohirya, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanilivka, Novoandriivka and Mali Shcherbaky in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Towards Kherson, the enemy continues artillery shelling of populated areas along the right bank of the Dnipro River, hitting civilian infrastructure of Novooleksandrivka, Havrylivka, Respublikanets, Novokair, Tomaryne, Tyahynka, Mykilske, Prydniprovske, Inzhenerne, Antonivka and Kherson.

On December 24, the Defense Forces struck a buildup of the enemy’s manpower near Polovynkyno in the Starobilsk region of the Luhansk oblast. The occupiers lost up to 150 soldiers dead and wounded.

On December 25, in the temporarily occupied territory of Kherson oblast, the invaders lost up to 50 servicemen killed and up to 100 wounded. About 5 units of military equipment of various types were also destroyed.

The enemy continues to use civilian healthcare facilities in the temporarily occupied territory to treat wounded servicemen of the russian occupation forces and mercenaries of private military companies. Thus, in the village of Bilovodsk, the Starobilsk region, Luhansk oblast, up to 300 wounded representatives of the wagner PMC are being treated. In addition, in Pervomaisk, on the territory of the so-called “military hospital”, deployed at the local lyceum, up to 300 occupiers injured near Bakhmut are also being treated.

In the settlement of Tokmak, Zaporizhzhia oblast, the russian invaders intensified administrative and police measures. Military personnel and local collaborators are searching for patriotic Ukrainian citizens, checking personal laptops and phones, and searching residences.

Aviation of the Defense Forces of Ukraine struck a buildup of the enemy, and our units of rocket forces and artillery hit 4 control points and 6 buildups of the enemy’s manpower.

The Ministry of Affairs of Ukraine announced in the published statement that Ukraine called on UN member states to resume the application of the UN Charter on legitimacy of the russian federation’s membership in the UN, and also deprive russia of the status of a permanent member of the UN Security Council and exclude it from the UN as a whole. The ministry claims that russia has become a permanent member of the Security Council, bypassing the procedures defined by the UN Charter.

Ukrenerho reported that fake information about the cancellation of power outages is spreading on social networks. It is noted that outages will continue as long as russia hits the infrastructure.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast 

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, at least nine settlements were under attack.

Kharkiv Mayor, Ihor Terekhov, said that on New Year’s Eve, the invaders may intensify shelling of Kharkiv to damage the energy infrastructure. 

Yesterday the enemy shelled Chuhunivka, Kamianka, Novomlynsk, Starytsia, Strilecha, Ustynivka, Vilkhuvatka and Zemlianka settlements with mortars and artillery.

The invaders also continued intensive shelling towards Kupiansk. The enemy struck Berestove, Dvorichna, Kotliarivka, Kyslivka and other settlements. 

In Dvorichna, the Kupiansk region, a building was damaged due to enemy shelling, and a fire broke out on the territory of outbuildings on the area of 250 square meters. There were no casualties.

According to the Regional Center for Emergency Medical Care, a 72-year-old woman, who received a shrapnel wound yesterday, was hospitalized in Vovchansk.

Humanitarian de-mining continues. Pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service defused 49 explosive ordnance.

Donetsk oblast 

Head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko, informed during a TV marathon that russians have not slowed down their offensive on Bakhmut, but are redeploying their troops. The invaders are stuck to the “scorched earth” tactics, do not count their own losses and destroy the entire infrastructure of the city as soon as something is repaired. According to him, 60% of the city is already damaged or destroyed.

Head of the Bakhmut City Regional Military Administration, Oleksii Reva, reported that all schools and kindergartens in Bakhmut were destroyed due to russian shelling.  According to him, all 46 schools and kindergartens were damaged by bombardment and shelling. In addition, the Pokrovsk educational complex, schools in Klynove, Opytne and Zaitseve settlements were significantly damaged, while the Bakhmut city centre for children and youth completely burned out.

The night in Donetsk oblast was relatively calm, there was no information about the casualties.

Towards Volnovakha, Vuhledar and Novoukrainka were under artillery fire, a building in the latter was damaged.

Towards Donetsk, russians were most active in Krasnohorivka and Marinka. The aftermath is being clarified.

Towards Horlivka, the outskirts of Chasiv Yar and Soledar communities were shelled.

Based on the information provided by Head of the Donetsk RMA, Pavlo Kyrylenko, russians injured 2 civilians in Avdiivka and Predtechyne.

Luhansk oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reports that the Ukrainian military struck the occupiers near the village of Polovinkino in the Starobilsk region. As a result of the attack, the russians’ losses were about 150 dead or wounded servicemen. 

Units of the Defense Forces repulsed the  occupiers’ attacks near Novoselivske, Stelmakhivka, Ploshchanka, Nevske and Krasnopopivka.

Towards Kupiansk and Lyman, the enemy inflicted fire damage on the areas of Stelmakhivka, Ploshchanka, Dibrova and Krasnopopivka.

Head of the Luhansk RMA Serhii Haidai says that fighting is already taking place not far from Kreminna, the local military command of the russian federation has been moved to Rubizhne. According to him, towards Svatov and Kreminna, the advantage is on the side of the Defense Forces of Ukraine – we are gradually moving forward. He also noted that the Red Cross had reserved $ 2 million for the construction of a modular town for IDPs from Luhansk oblast in Zakarpattia.

For IDPs from Luhansk oblast, 28 humanitarian headquarters operate in 18 oblasts of Ukraine. More than 100 K migrants from the oblast have already ben helped. Displaced persons have already received 1810 tons of food, 27.5 tons of hygiene products and household chemicals and 41.3 tons of other humanitarian aid: clothes, mattresses, blankets, dishes, etc.

The RMA also reported that in Starobilsk and Bilovodsk, the russians have a critical situation in hospitals. The occupiers continue to resettle the inhabitants of Popasna, which they are not going to restore, and they left only one crossing over the Siverskyi Donets River.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to DTEK, emergency power outages are taking place in Kyiv city and the oblast, stabilization schedules are not in effect. The company notes that the power deficit in the grid is still significant. There are also restrictions in the electricity transmission system due to significant damage to the main networks caused by massive russian attacks. Repair works at generation facilities and power grids continue.

The command of the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the russians target the largest number of cruise missiles at critical infrastructure facilities around Kyiv. The capital is the number one priority for the enemy.

A Multi-functional hall for training and safety during missile attacks opened in Kyiv oblast. According to Andrii Nebytov, Chief of the Kyiv oblast police, a new sports complex has been opened in the Obukhiv police department, to accommodate personnel and civilians during air alerts. The gym was established thanks to the contributions of the members of the NGO Sports Club of the Police of Kyiv Oblast

Invincibility Centres will be opened in churches of Kyiv oblast. This was agreed by Head of the oblast Oleksii Kuleba and the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, His Beatitude Metropolitan Epifanii on the eve of Christmas holidays.

Charity exhibition Icons on Ammo Boxes is taking place in St. Michael’s Cathedral. Spouses Oleksandr Klymenko and Sofia Atlantova paint icons on ammunition boxes left by the russians during their retreat in the de-occupied territories. The funds from the sale of icons will be sent to the families of the fallen soldiers of the 114th Territorial Defense Brigade.

Young people will be taught to resist stress for free during an online educational course Youth Resilience in Crises. According to the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, the purpose of the course is to help young people acquire resilience skills that will allow them to be better prepared for psychological traumas, threats and significant stress in a full-scale war. Training videos are available on the Prometheus platform.

According to the Kyiv Regional Administration, children from Makariv, Irpin, Bilohorodka, Borshchahivka, Bucha, Hostomel, and Borodyanka communities have received 40 laptops for educational purposes. Primarily, these laptops were given to orphans, children of internally displaced persons, from large and low-income families.

Swiss artist Gerri Hofstetter continued his light art tour in Kyiv. The Ministry of Culture reported that on Sunday, the Church of St. Nicholas, the Central Railway Station, the buildings of the Ministry of Culture, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were illuminated.

Zhytomyr oblast

The Defense Intelligence of Ukraine reported that the Zhytomyr Military Institute received a set of tactical level radio reconnaissance equipment. This equipment allows to search and detect electromagnetic radiation in the frequency range most often used by the enemy during communication between tactical units. The equipment was provided by the Research and Production Center Infozahyst.

A vehicle for the medical battalion Hospitallers was purchased by Nazar Domashyn, son of Dovbysk village Head Yuriy Domashyn who died in the war. According to him, the idea to raise funds for the car came after the death of his father, so he wants to help save someone’s life. In memory of his father, he launched the project Save and Remember.

Sumy oblast

According to the information posted on the official Facebook page of the ‘North’ Operational Command, the russians shelled the border areas of Sumy oblast with mortars in the afternoon. In less than half an hour, there were 16 incoming shells. No information on damage to civilian infrastructure was reported.

Oleksiш Reznikov, Minister of Defense of Ukraine, reports on Twitter that as a result of the large caliber artillery shelling of Bilopillia, conducted by the russians, a child was killed. During the shelling of this settlement, the child was in the hospital. According to international norms and rules, shelling of civilian facilities, especially hospitals, is considered a war crime.

Bilopillia Mayor Yurii Zarko said that the community received humanitarian aid from the Czech sister city Chernoshyce, which together with the RSJ company purchased an ambulance – Peugeot Boxer. In addition to the car, residents of Chernoshyce raised funds and bought 4 generators, 5 diesel heaters, up to 200 sets of thermal underwear, and winter clothes. Besides, the Chernoshyce community will help purchase several Starlink sets to provide the community with high-speed Internet in case of a blackout.

Chernihiv oblast

Ivan Vashchenko, Head of the Koriukivka Regional Military Administration, reported that recently, the Head of the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration Viacheslav Chaus visited our defenders stationed at border communities of Chernihiv oblast, specifically, the Koriukivka region. The soldiers received necessary household items, gifts, as well as festive Christmas mood.

Demining of the territory of Chernihiv oblast continues. The press service of the State Emergency Service in Chernihiv oblast reported that over the past week, EOD teams of the State Emergency Service were engaged 8 times to neutralize explosive devices and disposed of 100 explosive objects. 

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Internally displaced persons from the villages of the Pokrovsk community received humanitarian aid, thanks to the help of the Federation of Employers of Ukraine, the logistical support of Maksym Lohvyneko, and the efforts of the Nikopol regional military administration.

The communal electric transport observes the power limits given to Kryvyi Rih by energy companies: 50 trolleybuses, 10 high-speed and 10 city trams, 21 communal buses. The city authorities managed to agree with the energy companies to increase the limits of the city, and about 25% of street lighting is turned on – mainly on difficult road sections.

Vinnytsia oblast

The Mayor of Vinnytsia, Serhii Morhunov, held an on-site meeting to organize food outlets in case of emergency situations. In addition to stationary points that will be based in schools, mobile kitchens are also planned. The German city of Münster handed over mobile kitchen sets to the community. In total, 20 cooking points are prepared to be used in the absence of light and gas.

Kirovohrad oblast

Head of the Regional Council, Serhii Shulha, reported that a  reconnaissance drone was created in Kirovohrad Oblast. The wingspan of the drone is more than 2 meters, and the weight is 5 kilograms. The test flight range is 25 kilometers. The height is approximately 500 meters. Today, the drone was given to the soldiers of the special operations forces for testing.

German Matthias Winkenjohann conducts free tactical medicine training for residents of Kropyvnytskyi . Matias specializes in saving people from under rubble. In Kropyvnytskyi, he organizes training for representatives of public organizations, dog handlers, and rescuers.

Poltava oblast

According to Head of the Kirovohrad Regional State Administration Andrii Raikovych, high-rise buildings for internally displaced persons are to be built in Poltava Oblast. Areas for three high-rise buildings with 900 apartments were allocated. The process of designing and building the main networks has already started.

According to Head of the Kirovohrad Regional State Administration Andrii Raikovych,  the russian army has launched 101 missiles and 11 drones on the territory of Poltava Oblast since the beginning of the full-scale war. In total, there were 52 attacks. The largest one was on Kremenchuk’s  shopping center “Amstor”.

Cherkasy oblast

In the collection of the Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi state historical and cultural reserve, an artifact of the war, a Volkswagen T4 destroyed during hostilities in Donbas appeared .

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

The situation towards Zaporizhzhia has not undergone significant changes over the past day. The enemy concentrates its main efforts on holding the occupied borders. Over the past day, the occupiers shelled civilian infrastructure 51 times in 16 communities of the oblast. The police received 5 reports about the destruction of houses (apartments) and infrastructure facilities as a result of shelling by russian military personnel. According to Head of the Zaporizhzhia RMA, Oleksandr Starukh, there were 590 cases of shelling in Zaporizhzhia oblast over the past week, about 150 facilities were destroyed, including a school and energy infrastructure facilities.

The russian invaders intensified administrative and police measures in Tokmak, Zaporizhzhia oblast. Military personnel, together with local collaborators, search for patriotic Ukrainian citizens, check personal laptops and phones, and search residences.

8,192 people have received help at the Invincibility Centres in Zaporizhzhia oblast since the beginning of their operation. A total of 243 centres have been created in the oblast as of today. There is a special demand for Invincibility Centres in Vasylivka and Polohy regions due to some conditions there. Yesterday, on December 25, 211 people used services provided by the centres deployed in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Mykolaiv oblast

The West Pomeranian Voivodeship of Poland has once again sent a cargo with humanitarian aid to Mykolaiv Oblast to support the population in the winter period. The Polish people have prepared a large number of gasoline generators, compact stoves, functional beds for hospitals, food, thermal underwear and warm shoes for the territorial communities of the oblast. Marshal of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, Olgierd Geblewicz, has been taking care of the oblast since the beginning of the active phase of the war in February.

Mykolaiv received 15 power generators from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The equipment was handed over to the heating stations and Mykolaivoblteploenerho utility company. USAID provided assistance to Mykolaiv within the framework of the project Strengthening Public Trust.

Odesa oblast

Odesa oblast received another batch of humanitarian aid – 5 generators – from the Global Empowerment Mission. The generators will be handed over to the regional Center for Social and Psychological Rehabilitation of Children and to the Educational and Rehabilitation Center Opening the World.

Eight more Invincibility Centres were opened in Odesa. More than two thousand people visited the points in the past day. This was reported by the press service of the city council.

Kherson oblast

Yesterday, on December 25, the russian occupiers shelled the territory of Kherson oblast 33 times. The enemy attacked the regional center 7 times. The settlements of Beryslav and Kherson regions were also shelled. Two women were killed, and the third victim was hospitalized in a critical condition as a result of the artillery shelling of a village in the Beryslav region.

The police opened 36 criminal proceedings on the facts of war crimes committed by the russian invaders in Kherson oblast over the past two days. The police continue to receive reports of looting by the russian military during their occupation of populated areas. A resident of Velyka Oleksandrivka reported that the russian military ransacked his farm during the occupation, taking away all agricultural equipment and property. Also, the occupiers mined a significant area of agricultural land, destroyed winter crops on these land plots and made further economic activity impossible. Also, the russian military looted a farm in Piatykhatky, where they illegally seized 700 litres of diesel fuel, chainsaws, canisters, 5 tons of wheat, a gasoline generator and office equipment.

Law enforcement officers exhumed and examined the bodies of two civilian men in the Novovorontsovka community, who died as a result of armed aggression by the russian federation. According to preliminary data, local residents aged 61 and 80 died in April 2022 as a result of shelling by the russian military. Currently, the bodies have been sent for forensic examination.

On December 25, the invaders lost up to 50 servicemen killed and up to 100 wounded in the temporarily occupied territory of Kherson oblast. About 5 units of military equipment were also destroyed.

Road workers have finished setting up reverse detours on the destroyed bridge on the Kherson – Mykolaiv section, which is on the M-14 international road. 25 people and 17 units of equipment were involved into repair works. Currently, specialists continue to work on this section of the road – pothole repair and improvement is ongoing. Restoration of the destroyed bridge is scheduled for 2023.

Volyn oblast

The With God in the Heart CF reported that in Lutsk on December 26, 27 and 28, a charitable blood donation marathon will be held.

Zakarpattia oblast

The Svaliavsk community reported that Vasyl Faharash, a military man originally from Svaliavsk, returned from captivity.

In Uzhhorod, the premiere of the play Vertep of Donetsk Oblast was held. The play was prepared by the actors of the Donetsk Academic Regional Drama Theater.

Zakarpattia musician Vasyl Polazhynets presented the clip Carol for Victory, filmed in a Kharkiv`s school destroyed by the war.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk, Ruslan Martsinkiv, promised stable mobile communication in the absence of light. Сompanies are obliged to improve communication already now. And in case of long-term blackouts, they are looking for a solution so that the connection is at least zoned.

In Ivano-Frankivsk, combatants’ children painted large-caliber shell casings and shot cartridges that volunteers brought from the front. All paraphernalia was put up for auction on social networks. With the proceeds of almost UAH 45K, they bought tools, a welding machine, helmets, batteries, etc. for the military.

Lviv oblast

Emergency power outages were introduced in Lviv oblast and four other oblasts of Ukraine. These are forced actions due to exceeding consumption limits.

The Drohobych Region Military Administration together with the Kolo CF sent an SUV for the military. In addition, two volunteers from Boryslav, Roman Yavorskyi and Volodymyr Holobutovskyi, sent a bus that will be used to carry out combat missions for the soldiers.

The RMA reported that the Lviv Defense Cluster received an award from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine for helping rescuers.

From the Dresden water utility, Lvivvodokanal received humanitarian aid, namely, equipment, materials, clothing and tools that are critical for the enterprise.

Rivne oblast

There are 12 contract students in Rivne oblast transferred on a budget form of education. These are the children of fallen defenders of Ukraine and one IDP student. Such a transfer was carried out at the expense of the regional budget within the limits of the regional order.

Ternopil oblast

From Ternopil, a truck and an SUV were sent to Ternopil defenders in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The funds for the cars were donated by managers of catering establishments and employees of the Ternopil City Council.

In Ternopil, the Unity Platform CF performs for 500 children whose parents are defending Ukraine. Dobrochyn residents also presented sweets and toys to the audience.

Mykhailo Dianov, a military serviceman, defender of Mariupol, who was recently released from captivity, donated UAH 1.5 million to the Azov Patronage Service.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

130 pairs of winter shoes, 180 sets of thermal underwear, 100 winter waterproof jackets and hats, were sent for various military units from Khmelnytskyi.

The RMA reported that in Khmelnytskyi, the Christmas film For Us is being screened for free. The show was prepared by the NGO All-Ukrainian Youth Communication.

Chernivtsi oblast

The City Council reported that the Chernivtsi Central Hospital received Starlink to provide its continuous operation.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Denys Shmyhal reported that the Ukrainian energy sector will receive $1.5 billion from international partners.

Minister of Defense of the United Kingdom, Ben Wallace, reported that Ukraine received over 900 generators and about 15K sets of winter uniforms from Great Britain.

UAE allocates 2,4K generators for Ukraine. 1,2K generators have already been delivered, and the same amount will arrive in Ukraine in January.

Kazakhstan sent 41 powerful generators for Ukrainian hospitals. They will be transferred to Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv oblasts.

Keit Middlton invited a children’s choir from Ukraine to a Christmas concert in Westminster Abbey. The Princess of Wales talked to the little Ukrainians and praised them for their courage.

In his Christmas speech, Pope Francis congratulated believers on the holiday and called for solidarity with Ukrainians. Francis noted that at Christmas, many residents of Ukraine found themselves “in the dark, cold or far from their homes due to the destruction caused by ten months of war.”

Former US soldier Mark J. Lindkvist embarked on a campaign called Operation: Sleep Out. He will sleep in the open for 17 days to raise funds for winter equipment for the Armed Forces. “I choose to spend Christmas night outside in a tent. My friends in Ukraine did not have the opportunity to choose,” said Mark J. Lindkvist.
