War in Ukraine today: latest news, April 2, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 403rd day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The enemy launched 5 missile and 22 air strikes, as well as 42 attacks from multiple rocket launcher systems at the positions of our troops and civilian infrastructure of the settlements. 

There is still a high threat of missile and air strikes throughout Ukraine, as the enemy continues to ignore the laws and customs of war, using terror tactics against civilians. Today, the russian invaders launched 2 missile attacks and conducted a massive shelling from multiple rocket launchers on the central part of Kostiantynivka, Donetsk oblast. As a result of the occupiers’ criminal actions, civilians were killed and wounded, and a kindergarten, high-rise buildings and private houses damaged.

The enemy continues to focus its main efforts on conducting offensive actions towards Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Marinka. The towns of Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Marinka remain at the epicenter of the fighting. Thanks to the heroism and professionalism of soldiers, skillful and coordinated actions, and the effective use of maneuver, the units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled more than 50 enemy attacks over the course of the day. 

The operational situation towards Volyn, Polissia, Siversk and Sloboda remained unchanged.

The enemy fired at the settlements of Volfyno, Basivka, Riasne and Mezenivka in Sumy oblast, as well as Veterynarne, Hatyshche, Velykyi Burluk and Kolodiazne in Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, Kamianka, Dvorichna, Zakhidne, Masiutivka, Krokhmalne in Kharkiv oblast and Novoselivske in Luhansk oblast were subjected to russian forces’ attacks.

 Towards Liman sector, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensives in the areas of Bilohorivka and Verkhnekamianske. Nevske and Bilohorivka in Luhansk oblast and Torske, Spirne and Rozdolivka in Donetsk oblast came under artillery fire.

The enemy does not stop storming Bakhmut. Nevertheless, Ukrainian defenders are bravely holding the city, repelling numerous enemy attacks.  During the day, the invaders conducted unsuccessful offensives in Ivanivske, Donetsk oblast. They shelled Vasiukivka, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Hryhorivka, Bohdanivka, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Chasiv Yar and Nyzhyk in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Avdiivka and Maryinka, the enemy conducted offensive actions in the areas of Avdiivka, Pervomaiske and Marinka, but did not succeed. Avdiivka, Orlivka, Tonenke, Netailove, Krasnohorivka and Mirinka in Donetsk oblast were shelled.

Towards Shakhtarsk, the enemy fired on Pobieda, Novomykhailivka, Vuhledar, Prechystivka and Velyka Novosilka in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, the enemy did not conduct active operations  sectors, but was improving its defensive lines and positions. Novopil in Donetsk oblast; Olhivske, Chervone, Huliaipole, Bilohiria, Novoandriivka in Zaporizhzhia oblast, as well as Dudchany, Zmiivka, Beryslav, Vesele, Mykolaivka, Burhunka, Antonivka in Kherson oblast and the city of Kherson were shelled.

The russian invaders continue to suffer huge losses. To replenish them, in the military units of the Armed Forces of the russian federation, which are stationed in the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, they are actively conducting explanatory work among conscripts. They tell young people about the need to sign contracts with the russian federation and participate in combat operations on the territory of Ukraine. 

Aviation of the Defense Forces of Ukraine carried out 8 strikes on buildups of enemy personnel and military equipment, and units of rocket troops and artillery hit a buildup of manpower, a control point and 2 other important enemy targets. 

Vadym Hutzait, Minister of Youth and Sports, says that as a result of russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine, 262 athletes were killed and 363 sports facilities in Ukraine destroyed. 

The Ukrainian defense plant Mayak reports that the production of high-explosive aviation munitions began in Ukraine. These are two types of ammunition: OBP-23.1 weighing 1 kg (guaranteed kill zone of 11 meters) and OBP-23.05 weighing 0.5 kg (guaranteed kill zone of 4.5 meters)

Olena Sokolova, Head of the children’s service of the Sloviansk city military administration, informs that a decision was made to forcefully evacuate children and their guardians who refuse to leave Sloviansk. Currently, there are 23 families in the Sloviansk community, with 34 orphans and children deprived of parental care.


Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on April 1, the enemy shelled at least 14 border settlements in Kharkiv, Kupiansk and Chuhuiv regions. Kupiansk, Dvorichna, Pishchane, Krokhmalne, Zakhidne, Udy, Veterynarne and other settlements were under attack. As a result of shelling in Kutkivka village of Kupiansk region, a 43-year-old civilian man was killed and a 46-year-old man injured. He was hospitalized in a moderate condition. In Kupiansk region, an S-300 missile attack damaged the buildings of an agricultural enterprise in Velykyi Burluk village and a private building in Podoly.

The State Emergency Service in Kharkiv oblast said that on April 1, in Dovhalivka village of Savyntsi community, Izium region, a man born in 1964 was blown up on an unknown explosive object (tripwire). He was hospitalized at the regional clinical hospital with a mine explosive injury, closed head injury, shrapnel wound to the left side of the face and left thigh.

Ukraine will be able to demine all the territory of Kharkiv oblast on its own in 100 years. Currently, about 500K hectares of the region need to be demined.  Demining is ongoing by 97 hectares per week. The good news is that missions from all over the world will come to help the 25 sapper brigades that are working now, and the speed of demining will increase by ten times.

The USAID DOBRE Program handed over cooperation protocols to the communities of Mykolaiv, Kharkiv and Kherson oblasts. On March 30-31, 2023, Lviv hosted a second phase work plan of presentation of the Decentralisation Offers Better Results and Efficiency (DOBRE) Program in the communities of Kharkiv, Mykolaiv and Kherson oblasts. Representatives of the present 22 communities also received protocols on cooperation with the Program until September 2025. From Kharkiv oblast, Chuhuiv, Merefa, Rohan, Malynivka, Balakliia and Staryi Saltiv communities received cooperation protocols.

According to UAnimals, volunteers gave a dog to the family of a deceased military that the defender found while serving in Vovchansk.

Kharkiv Ecopark announced that on June 1, it plans to open the first location – the Alpaca Valley. It is a relatively small area that will be demined and completely safe for visitors.

Donetsk oblast

Towards Donetsk, russians shelled Avdiivka twice at night, damaging a garden cooperative and the House of Culture. Marinka, Krasnohorivka and Novomykhailivka were also shelled, without casualties. As a result of shelling, 10 residential buildings, a school, a house of culture, administrative buildings, an outbuilding and cars were destroyed and damaged. Two people were injured in Bakhmut. There were isolated attacks in the outskirts of Chasiv Yar and Soledar communities. Towards Lysychansk, Torske and Zarichne of Lyman community were under attack. Siversk and neighboring settlements were also targeted . In total, russians injured 5 civilians yesterday.

Anastasiia Miedviedieva, Spokeswoman of the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that at night, russian troops shelled an apartment building in Toretsk. As a result, communications were damaged, three people poisoned by carbon monoxide, and another person injured.

This morning, russians launched two S-300 missiles at Kostiantynivka and attacked from Uragans MRLS 4 times. 15 apartment buildings and 11 private houses, a kindergarten and an administrative building were damaged. The number of injured people as a result of a russian strike on Kostiantynivka increased to 10. Earlier it was noted that six Ukrainians were killed by enemy shelling.

As a result of enemy shelling of Kurakhove community, power supply was disrupted via 3 110 kV power grids that supply power to Pokrovsk region. There was also a 10-minute interruption in the power supply to Kramatorsk power centre, which has now been restored. Services are currently reconnecting consumers in Pokrovsk region to alternative power supply networks.

 

Luhansk oblast

Our military are repelling russian offensives in Kreminna no matter difficult weather conditions, the invaders are conducting unorganized forced document replacement in the occupied settlements and they are intensifying their search for partisans in  Troitske community. In the south of Kreminna, russian troops conducted unsuccessful offensives yesterday. Having no desired results at the frontline, russians are cynically fighting civilians. Specifically, they attacked buildings in Nevske region with artillery and aircraft. At least five of the destroyed buildings were located on the same street. Novoselivske, Dibrova and Bilohorivka were also under enemy attack.

 

Over the past week, humanitarian hubs in Dnipro and Ternopil have provided 1587 food packages to IDPs from Sievierodonetsk, Luhansk oblast. In March, IDPs received 6,724 packages there. Specifically, in Dnipro 1276 per week and 6224 per month and in Ternopil 311 per week and 500 per month.

 

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

April 2 marks one year since de-occupation of Kyiv oblast from russian troops. Joint actions of the Defense Forces, volunteers and locals managed to repulse the occupying army and liberate the oblast. As the Kyiv Regional Military Administration reminded, the hostilities in Kyiv oblast lasted for over a month, 15 territorial communities of Vyshhorod, Bucha and Brovary regions were under occupation – 270 settlements in the oblast. The russians left behind ruins, torture chambers and graves. During the occupation, 1,370 residents of Kyiv oblast were killed, 714 of them tortured.

Ukrenergo reported that the company repair crews have completed emergency restoration work at power facilities in the central region. All consumption restrictions, which were introduced in Kyiv, Zhytomyr and Kharkiv oblasts due to damaged equipment during a massive russian missile attack on March 9, have been lifted.

The first graduation of military chaplains who completed advanced training courses on military chaplaincy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine took place in the “Sofia Kyivska” National Nature Reserve. 30 military chaplains from five religious organizations were trained on the basis of the Military Institute of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University.

The Hydropark station, which had been closed since the start of the full-scale invasion, resumed work in the Kyiv metro. The station is located on the ground section of the red metro line, so it will be closed during air alarms for safety reasons.

Living Stories of War by Olha Feshchenko, volunteer from Borodianka, and Stories of Destruction, Rescue and Survival by historian Valentyn Moiseyenko were presented in Kyiv. The first book contains 35 stories of ordinary, civilian people who were killed, tortured, captured and raped – stories that the whole world should hear. The other book contains chronology of the events of local partisans’ resistance, destruction of Borodyanka, and the rescue and survival of its inhabitants.

Pyrotechnicians of the mobile rescue center, specialists of the Kyiv Red Cross of Ukraine, and psychologists of the State Emergency Service conducted safety training for children in one of Kyiv’s shopping malls. In a playful way, children were told about mine and fire safety, and first aid techniques. Together with the children, psychologists made anti-stress toys, colored superheroes from educational printing materials developed by the State Emergency Service together with the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF Ukraine.

Zhytomyr oblast

Ukrenergo reported that restrictions on electricity consumption have been lifted in Zhytomyr oblast. Emergency repairs in the central region were completed thanks to the help of Lithuanian colleagues. However, the Energy Research Center warns that the threat of emergency power outages remains until the network and generation are fully restored.

Malin signed an agreement on partnership and cooperation with the German city of Billerbeck. As the Mayor of Malin Oleksandr Sitailo reported, the agreement was signed in Germany. Billerbeck Mayor Marion Dirks, her team and deputies discussed cooperation and a plan to implement the agreement.

More than 650 people joined a charity quest in the plane parked in Shoduarivskyi Park in Zhytomyr. You can participate in the quest for free or for charitable contributions. During the month of charity quests, the organizers collected more than UAH 23 K for front-line children’s hospitals.

In Zhytomyr, orphaned children and those deprived of parental care, who are brought up in foster families, received toys, clothes, and books. Katarina Bauer, Head of the Austrian educational charity “Heart for Ukraine” handed over the gifts to them.

Sumy oblast

Two people were killed due to shelling in Sumy oblast. Around 5 am, the russians fired mortars at one of the settlements of Nova Sloboda community and hit a milk truck, killing the driver and the forwarder. Krasnopillia community was also under shelling.

The day before, the russian military struck Bilopillia and Esman communities. In total, 7 hits from self-propelled guns, 29 from mortars and 10 shots from AGS were recorded.

In Trostyanets, volunteers of the public movement Dobrobat worked in a 5-story building opposite the station, destroyed by fire due to russian artillery shelling. Volunteers and local residents removed construction debris and cleaned the building for its further restoration. As reported in the Sumy RMA, two Dobrobat centers have been operating in the oblast for almost a year, the backbone of which is approximately 40 volunteers.

Medicines, medical products and equipment were received by Konotop Central District Hospital from the International Charity Fund “AISM Ukraine”. This assistance will help doctors save the lives and health of patients, ensure their more comfortable stay in the hospital and improve the quality of medical care. 

Chernihiv oblast

The SBGS reported that the russians continue to shell the border areas of Chernihiv oblast. Yesterday, the russian military opened fire on Semenivka community from a mounted anti-tank grenade launcher and from self-propelled artillery. There were 7 explosions.

Chernihiv School No. 6, whose premises were damaged during active hostilities, will resume face-to-face education from Monday. As reported by the city council, the repair works were completed. For safety reasons, a shelter has been set up, which is equipped with bathrooms, a ventilation system, water supply and sewage, internet connection, and a generator.

Psychologists of the National Police continue their art therapy workshops. This time, the event was held for the children of policemen who experienced all the horrors of the fighting in Chernihiv and needed psychological support. The children met with dog handlers and their pets, received information from explosives experts and visited the regional office of the National Police.

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Free psychological consultations are held in Dnipro for internally displaced persons from Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts. Aid is provided both individually and during group meetings..

Vinnytsia oblast

Schoolchildren from Nazarivka, Sokolivske community, Kropyvnytskyi region, collected UAH 9,430 for the Armed Forces of Ukraine in one day. This money was handed over to Tetiana Syla, Head of Together We are Strong.

Poltava oblast

A charity fair to collect funds for Oleksandr Luhovyi, serviceman of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was held in Kobeliaky, Poltava oblast. They raised more than UAH 100K.

Cherkasy oblast

Cherkasy City Council reported that 200 high school students from Cherkasy schools implement the city project “Model of the UN. Cherkasy-2023”. They try themselves in the role of diplomats and representatives of the United Nations and develop ideas for the post-war reconstruction of the international order and the reform of the system of international institutions. 

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

The situation towards Zaporizhzhia has not changed significantly. The enemy concentrates its main efforts on holding the occupied positions. On April 01, the enemy carried out 68 shelling attacks on the positions of Ukrainian defenders, using tank weapons, rocket and artillery weapons along the entire contact line.

The police received 11 reports of destruction of buildings (apartments) and infrastructure facilities as a result of shelling by russian military personnel. The occupiers shelled civilian infrastructure in the settlements of Huliaipole, Orikhiv, Mykhailo-Lukasheve, Novodanylivka, Zaliznychne, Novoandriivka, Kamianske, Mala Tokmachka, Olhivske, Chervone, Bilohiria, Malynivka, Preobrazhenka, Stepove, Mali Shcherbaky, and Novoiakovlivka.

russian occupiers continue looting the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine. The occupiers are illegally exporting round timber from Melitopol to the southern direction.

Today, April 02, a series of explosions occurred in the temporarily occupied city of Melitopol. According to the mayor Ivan Fedorov, the explosions occurred at the locomotive depot. russian military personnel have placed their military equipment repair base, as well as a fuel storage and part of the ammunition storage there.

Mykolaiv oblast

On April 1, units of the State Emergency Service came 37 times to identify explosive objects left by russian army. 35 explosive devices were seized. This was reported by the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration.

“Together” locations set up by UNICEF are operating in Mykolaiv. They are created to distract children of all ages from the war and teach them something new. Family doctors, psychologists, and social workers are ready to help. Various workshops and classes are organized for children.

Odesa oblast

As of today, the threat of missile strikes remains high. According to the ‘South’ Operational Command, the enemy continues to keep 12 combat ships on duty in the Black Sea.

Emergency service workers of Odesa oblast have received three fire trucks as part of a charitable donation from ATB-Market LLC. The Mercedes chassis trucks were purchased in Germany and handed over to the region’s fire and rescue units. They are intended to deliver employees, firefighting equipment, and fire-technical weapons to the scene of the call.

Ukrainian engineers from Odesa have developed an electric vehicle for the civil defense forces that can travel up to 150 kilometers on a single battery charge. The vehicle was created on the basis of a Volkswagen T5 minivan, and its design allows for easy functionality changes and use for various missions. The developers noted that the new electric vehicle can be used for various missions, such as patrolling, search and rescue, public order protection, passenger transportation, and cargo transportation. In addition, the electric vehicle has a low level of noise and emissions, which allows for its use in environmentally sensitive areas and terrain.

Kherson oblast

On April 1, russian occupiers attacked cities and villages in Kherson oblast 60 times, firing 290 shells from mortars, multiple launch rocket systems, artillery, tanks, and aircraft. As a result of russian aggression, one person was killed and another two injured.

Occupiers continue conducting forced passportization of residents in the temporarily occupied territory of Kherson oblast. Specifically, russian occupiers restrict the movement of Ukrainian citizens who have not received russian passports at checkpoints in the populated areas of Henichesk and Strilkove. The occupiers also actively forge documents on the right to own residential premises and recreation bases of Ukrainian citizens by falsifying purchase, sale and donation agreements in order to appropriate their property.

After successfully hitting a russian forces object, the occupiers are actively checking the mobile phones of local residents and conducting unauthorized searches of the homes of Ukrainian citizens in  Kozachi Laheri, Kherson oblast.

Mykhailo Lynetskyi, Head of the Kherson regional military administration, says that the Kherson RMA has established coordination centers for eliminating the consequences of shelling by russian forces. The energy workers have been reinforced with units from other regions of Ukraine. Ukrzaliznytsia is also providing energy supply units. 

The russian occupiers have signed a so-called ‘agreement’ with the museum in Simferopol to ‘preserve’ paintings stolen from the Kherson Regional Local Lore Museum. According to Yurii Sobolevskyi, First Deputy chairman of the regional council, the so-called ‘agreement’ was signed on April 1 between the pseudo Ministry of Culture of Kherson oblast and the director of the Tavryda Simferopol Central Museum.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

By decree of the President of Ukraine, Senior Lieutenant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Vadym Havrysiuk was awarded with the 2th Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi. The soldier was killed in the battles near Svatov, Luhansk oblast and did not have time to receive the award. The award was handed over to his parents, Vasyl and Orysia Havrysiuk.

Zakarpattia oblast

The RMA held a meeting with Levente Modyor, Deputy Minister of Foreign Economy and Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Parliamentary State Secretary. They discussed the issue of national communities, on which the terrorist state and third pro-russian forces constantly speculate.

Modyor Levente, Deputy Minister of Foreign and Economic Affairs of Hungary, stated that Hungary will help in improving the conditions of the Zakarpattia Regional Children’s Hospital.

The regional council of Zakarpattia reported that 14 buses from the Hungarian city of Veszprém were sent to Zakarpattia, Chernihiv, Kharkiv and Sumy oblasts.

The regional council of Zakarpattia reported that the only Ukrainian-language educational institution in Romania received a flag with the signatures of soldiers of the Zakarpattia 128th Brigade for its 25th anniversary.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

5 medical institutions of Prykarpattia received generators from the International Organization for Migration, which is part of the UN representation in Ukraine.

The RMA reported that 8 cars were sent to the front by the regional military administration.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, conferred the title of Hero of Ukraine and presented the Order of the Golden Star to Lieutenant Colonel of the 10th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade Serhii Yandulskyi.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, awarded the 3th degree Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky III to the serviceman of the 78th Battalion, 102nd Brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the company commander, Captain Serhii Lesnikov.

Lviv oblast

The Lviv City Hall held a meeting with Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovych, state and political figure, President of Croatia 2015-2020. The UNBROKEN project was discussed.

Elderly IDPs who found shelter in Starosambir community received humanitarian aid, hygiene products, walking sticks, crutches and other rehabilitation equipment from Help Age International.

From Drohobych communities, 4 ambulances with everything necessary to provide medical assistance to the civilian population and evacuate wounded military were sent to the front for special forces of the Armed Forces, the National Guard and the State Emergency Service thanks to the “KOLO” CF, as part of the 1000_Freedom_Cars initiative.

The Tournament of Honor in mixed martial arts was held in Chervonohrad in memory of the Luhovsky family and soldiers who were killed for the freedom of Ukraine. Nataliia Luhovska from Chervonohrad was a psychologist in the “AZOV” regiment. In 2018, her son Yurii was killed in the war. On April 21, 2022, her son-in-law Oleksii Lastovych was killed in Mariupol on the Azovstal plant where Natalia Luhovska was killed on May 3 as well.

Europe’s Strongest Man tournament was held in Leeds (Great Britain). Pavlo Kordiaka from Lviv became the strongest man in Europe.

The city council of Lviv reported that during the war, 3 723 babies were born in Lviv city maternity hospitals.  

Rivne oblast

Rivne artists started an open-ended charity marathon “Joint Struggle” in the Euroart gallery. The fair and lottery raised UAH 110K to purchase a ground tracked drone for evacuating wounded soldiers from the battlefield.

Ternopil oblast

The RMA and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Ukraine signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

The RMA representatives visited the east of the country and presented state awards to the soldiers of the 105th Territorial Defense Brigade. In addition to honorary awards, necessary equipment was handed over from Ternopil oblast to the front line.

The updated notification system is being tested in Ternopil oblast. From now on, messages about danger or emergency situations will come to smartphones with a mobile application and push-button phones.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Oleksandr Simchyshyn, Mayor of Khmelnytskyi, announced at an extraordinary session of the Khmelnytskyi City Council that the termination of the use of all land plots of the UOC Moscow Patriarchate will be considered. He added that the decision of regional and district councils will also be initiated.

Chernivtsi oblast

The 93rd Territorial Defense Battalion received an SUV from the Federation of Dentists of Bukovyna, with the assistance of Chernivtsi RMA.

The Territorial Social Service Center of the Sokyriany City Council received medical equipment, namely, an ophthalmoscope, a slit lamp, and four pulse oximeters, from the Arlene Campbell (US).

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The second group of Ukrainian soldiers completed training on AS90 self-propelled artillery installations in Great Britain. In January Rishi Sunak, Prime Minister of Great Britain, promised to send 30 such installations to Ukraine.

Due to EU sanctions, the Finnish debt collection service has frozen the finances of the russian Science and Culture Center located in Helsinki.

Josep Borrell, Head of EU diplomacy, stated that the EU will oppose any abuses by russia during the presidency of the UN.

Poland urged its citizens to leave russia after the arrest of the Wall Street Journal correspondent Evan Hershkovich, who was detained by FSB officers.

Robert Golob, Prime Minister of Slovenia, announced that the country will contribute to the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine.

Power engineers from Lithuania and Ukraine completed restoration of power grid facilities in the central region of Ukraine. This made it possible to remove all restrictions on power consumption for central Ukraine.

An exhibition dedicated to the international tribunal for russia was opened in New York. There are artifacts collected during field expeditions in liberated territories.
