Ukraine in Brief: Latest regional news May 19, 2022 (photo, video)

It has been the eighty-fifth day of heroic resistance of the Ukrainian people against the russian military invasion.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on 4 directions of the eastern borders, the russian invaders unsuccessfully tried to conduct offensive and assault actions. The main efforts of the enemy focus on Donetsk direction.

Ukraine briefly:

It has been the eighty-fifth day of heroic resistance of the Ukrainian people against the russian military invasion.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on 4 directions of the eastern borders, the russian invaders unsuccessfully tried to conduct offensive and assault actions. The main efforts of the enemy focus on Donetsk direction.

In Volyn and Polissia directions, the situation remains unchanged. The threat of missile and bomb attacks from the territory of the Republic of Belarus on civilian and military infrastructure of Ukraine remains.

In Seversky direction, enemy units continue to arrange additional firing positions and protective structures in the border areas of Bryansk and Kursk oblasts.

In Chernihiv and Sumy oblasts, the enemy shelled settlements using artillery and mortars and launched a missile attack on the village of Desna. Attempts to conduct aerial reconnaissance with the help of UAVs continue in this direction.

In Kharkiv direction, the main efforts of the occupiers focus on keeping the seized borders, conducting counterattacks in order to restore lost positions. It is noted that the sabotage and reconnaissance groups operate in the region to improve the tactical position. With the support of artillery, the occupiers conducted hostilities in the area of Velyka Komyshuvakha, had no success, suffered significant losses in some areas and were forced to move to previously occupied positions.

Towards Liman, the enemy carried out shelling of civilian infrastructure, launched missile strikes and tried to gain a foothold in previously occupied positions. They used operational-tactical and army aviation in order to destroy civilian facilities in the areas of Loskutivka, Katerynivka, Novomikhailivka and Orikhove.

Towards Severodonetsk, the invaders carried out an offensive and assault actions in the area of Ustynivka, they were unsuccessful.

Towards Bakhmut, the enemy launched an offensive to improve their tactical position. They tried to conduct assault actions in the area of Zolote-4, and were not successful.

Towards Avdiivka, the enemy conducted offensive actions near the settlement of Yuryivka, suffered losses and retreated. According to the results of assault actions in the areas of Novokalynove and Pervomaisk, the enemy did not succeed.

In Kurakhiv direction, the enemy unsuccessfully carried out an offensive near Novomikhailivka.

Towards Novopavlovsk and Zaporizhzhia, there were no active military actions. The rocket and barrel artillery and mortars affected infrastructure and peaceful homes in the areas of Huliaipilske, Novodanylivka, Malynivka and Huliaipole.

In the South Bug direction, the invaders did not conduct any active hostilities. The main efforts focus on keeping the boundaries occupied. The enemy carried out shelling with mortars, barrel and rocket artillery in the areas of Limany, Pryshyb, Trudoliubivka and Novovorontsovka.

Towards Bessarabia, no significant changes are recorded.

In the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, the enemy continues to implement measures of the administrative and police regime, violates rights and freedoms of civilians, prohibits free movement, including that to the territory controlled by the Government of Ukraine.

As of May 19, 2022, 658 children were injured in Ukraine due to the orcs’ actions. According to the official data, 231 children were killed and over 427 injured.

During the last 24 hours, pyrotechnic units of the State Emergency Service were involved 231 times, 2 312 explosive objects have been found, extracted and disposed, including 1 aircraft bomb, the area of 142 hectares has been examined. Since the beginning of the war, SES units have made over 28 000 raids, eliminated 8 696 fires, rescued 1 310 people and provided psychological assistance to 125 000 people.

Currently, throughout Ukraine work is underway to demine the territory and destroy Russian ammunition. Since the beginning of the war, 112 905 munition items have been defused, including 1 975 bombs. The area of 21 851 hectares was examined.

In Ukraine, since the beginning of a full-scale invasion, 88 SRGs have been exposed, according to the First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Yevhen Yenin. “In total, during the war, 88 sabotage and reconnaissance groups were exposed on the territory of the state. About 800 people involved in sabotage activities were detained. Almost all of them were delivered to the SSU,” he said.  Yenin notes that over the past two weeks, law enforcement officers have exposed one sabotage and reconnaissance group and detained 43 people involved in sabotage activities. In Kyiv alone, in the first two weeks of May, 18 people involved in the SRG were detained, 16 of whom were taken to the SBU.

“In Mariupol, intensity of hostilities has reduced. Currently, measures are underway to evacuate the Ukrainian military from Mariupol,” said deputy chief of the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksiy Gromov. The Red Cross registers Ukrainian soldiers who left Azovstal. During the registration, each Ukrainian defender fills out a questionnaire, indicating his/her personal data, such as name and date of birth, as well as the next of kin. This information allows the Red Cross to monitor the fate of captured persons and help them stay in touch with their families.

The occupiers continue to remove bodies from Mariupol, hiding their crimes. In particular, the inhumans continue to sort out the rubble of the Drama Theater. Yesterday and today, the bodies of the victims were taken several times by truck towards the Old Crimea.

Hostile troops do not abandon attempts to strengthen on Zmiinyi Island and continue to attack from the sea, but they are hampered by stormy weather.

Ukrposhta announced the start of sales of the second series of stamps dedicated to repelling the “Russian warship”, but this time after the Ukrainian military sank it.

Today, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Vyshyvanka (national embroidery).  Every embroidered shirt is our amulet, our symbol of indestructibility and strength. But the present makes its own adjustments, embroidered shirts correspond to the current time period! The fighter of the Legion Svoboda of the National Guard Maksym Lutsyk (nicknamed “Maiak”) published his photo from Luhansk oblast with the guys who painted Ukrainian ornaments on their combat shirts. “At the front, even the lack of an embroidered shirt will not be an obstacle to celebrate the Day of Vyshyvanka. Because the vyshyvanka is the DNA of our nation,” Lutsyk wrote

Eastern regions

Kharkiv oblast

In Kharkiv oblast, invaders’ main efforts were focused on maintaining occupied lines and launching the counter-offensive. They tried to assault the settlements of Ustynivka, Zolote-4, Yurievka, Novokayinove, Pervomaiske and Novomikhailivka without any success. Towards Izyum, with the support of artillery the enemy launched an offensive in the area of Velika Kamyshyvakha.

At 4 a.m. the russian invaders once again insidiously shelled the Kyivsky district of Kharkiv. The shell hit a boiler room near the Institute of Endocrine Pathology Problems. According to preliminary reports, there were no casualties. In addition, two private houses were damaged as the village of Tsyrkuny was struck.

According to the head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration Oleg Sinegubov, the russian shelling killed a 64-year-old resident of the village of Tsyrkuny, wounded 5 people were wounded: a resident of the Northern Saltovka village in Kharkiv, a woman and a 13-year-old child in the village of Velykye Khutoru in the Shevchenko community, a 17-year-old resident of the Chuhuiev district and a woman in the Balakley community.

Today, the Prince Alexander Nevsky monument was dismantled in Kharkiv.

Donetsk oblast

There is fighting in the areas of the settlements of Ternova and Borscheva. The enemy conducts intensified air reconnaissance. The enemy fired at civilian infrastructure in the areas of Prishib, Hrushuvakha and Bogorodichne settlements. The invaders carried out offensives in the area of the village of Alexandropol (before 2016 – Rozovka) Yasinovatsky district and tried to enhance the tactical situation in the areas of the settlements of Pilipchatino, Druzhba and Tripillia without any success.

According to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, russian invaders launched another airstrike on Bakhmut. The shells hit a five-story building, a private house and an administrative building. Rescuers pulled 6 people out of the rubble in the private house, including one child, and their condition is satisfactory. The whole entryway of the five-storey apartment building was destroyed, but according to preliminary information, there were no casualties.

Today, 60 people were evacuated from the burning town of Liman. One man was hospitalized. Police officers arrive at the scene, to help people, to provide first aid, safely and timely take the wounded to the hospital.

The General Staff shares the news on the occupation military command’s plans to involve university students in warfare due to a lack of mobilization resources in the temporarily occupied territories of the Donetsk oblast. 

Luhansk oblast

Four people were killed overnight in Severodonetsk following the russian shelling and air raids. The head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration Serhiy Haidai reported that bodies of two women without signs of life were found after inspection of an apartment where an enemy shell hit in the morning. A man died near one of the houses. A woman and a man came under the russian fire on the same street. The woman was killed on the spot and the man was hospitalized with shrapnel wounds.

The invaders began hitting the regional center erratically with heavy weapons in the morning. The shelling continued throughout the day. Mainly residential buildings were targeted. 

Data on the dead and wounded is still being verified in the area of active hostilities. As of now, there are 12 dead and over 40 wounded residents.  According to Serhiy Haidai, medical aid is being rendered to them.

According to Serhiy Haidai, 37 people were evacuated from Luhansk oblast despite “heavy shelling of Severodonetsk”.

Among those evacuated were five children.

Northern regions

Kyiv and the Kyiv oblast

The Kyiv regional military administration reported that as of May 19, Kyiv oblast recorded destruction in 46 out of 69 territorial communities. More than 4500 private and multi-story residential buildings were damaged as a result of the russian troops’ invasion in the region. The infrastructure in Bucha, Irpin, Gostomel, Borodyanka, Makariv, Velikodimersk and Piskiv territorial communities were badly damaged. Monitoring groups continue to record destruction.

The Kyiv regional military administration also noted that water supply has been resumed in all settlements of the region. At present, the connection of individual houses in each settlement to water is underway. A small number of consumers in the Gostomel community remain without centralized water supply and drainage due to the lack of power supply.

DTEK Kyiv Regional Power Grids has completed restoration of power supply to communities in the region affected by the hostilities. In one month and a half, power supply was resumed in homes of more than 260K consumers.

As of May 19, Kyivoblgaz resumed gas supply in all 120 settlements of the region. The enterprise will operate under the regular mode. The increased number of emergency brigades remains in Bucha, Irpin and Gostomel communities.

Pyrotechnicians examined 26 communities in Bucha, Brovary, Vyshhorod and Bila Tserkva districts. They defused 340 explosive objects.

Two men stepped on a mine and blew up in Bucha district. It happened between the villages Lypivka and Korolivka. 52-year-old and 48-year-old civilians sustained multiple injuries. They were hospitalized in Makariv Hospital.

The first russian soldier to be tried in Ukraine for a war crime, Vadim Shishimarin was brought before the Solomyanskyi District Court in Kyiv. The russian soldier is accused of killing civilians in Sumy. He pleaded guilty.

Chernihiv oblast

The driver was injured as the tractor exploded on a munition. On May 19 around 12:00 a.m. the operational coordination center of the State Emergencies Service of the region received a message that in a forest in Chernihiv oblast, a tractor ran over an explosive object, which resulted in an explosion. The driver suffered a leg injury and was taken to the Chernihiv regional hospital.

In Chernihiv, for the first time since the beginning of the war, public transport started working.

Sumy oblast    

Massive shelling of the border areas in Sumy oblast has continued since the evening in all districts. Invaders used artillery, mortars and small arms at Esman, Sopych and Seredyna Buda. The information on casualties is being verified.

Demining of Sumy oblast continues. Experts of the State Emergencies Service found and destroyed:

🔸 In Okhtyrka district:

PG7C1 – 1 unit, AC-125 mm –  2 units, F-1 – 1 unit.

🔸 In Sumy district:

AC-30 mm – 1 unit (transported to the marshalling yard), PG7C1 –  1 unit (transported to the marshalling yard).

🔸 In Konotop district:

AC-125 mm – 2 units, PG7VR –  1 unit, AC-45 mm –  2 units, Explosives –  5 units.

Zhytomyr oblast

According to preliminary estimates, the damage caused by russian troops to the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone exceeds 2.5 billion UAH. A total of 245 cases of ecocide have already been recorded on the territory of Ukraine and in the Black Sea. Ukrinform reported the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Ruslan Strilets shared this information at a briefing. “At the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, the radiation control system was disabled, about 100 pieces of modern equipment of the central analytical laboratory of Chornobyl were destroyed. In the unique complex of the Chornobyl Reserve, the fire destroyed almost 12K hectares of land,” Strilets said.

Chornobyl vyshyvanka survived occupation. “Every day russian occupiers pass by it and have to put up with the fact that the whole Ukraine and the whole civilized world looks at them through this vyshyvanka,” the Chornobyl leaders reported. This particular pattern at the plant is entered in the Book of Records of Ukraine as the longest vyshyvanka in the country.

 

Central regions

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

According to the head of Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration Valentyn Reznichenko, the occupiers have fired at Zelenodolsk community five times during the day. They shelled Velyka Kostromka with Grad and Uragan multi launch rocket systems. There are no casualties. Houses were damaged or destroyed. There is no power or gas supply partially in the village.

 

The SSU detained Oleg Tsarev’s brother suspected of organizing sabotage in Dnipropetrovsk oblast. “According to the SSU, the relative of the former MP-traitor, initiator of “Novorossiya” and Yanukovych’s henchman tried to arrange sabotage activities in Dnipropetrovsk oblast”, the Security Service of Ukraine reports.

Kirovohrad oblast

TBN informs that in the communities of Kirovohrad oblast, the situation is under control.

“Our volunteer team delivered essentials (detergents, clothes and food) to one of the largest humanitarian hubs for the IDPs of the region. A large cargo was delivered to the regional hospital.

Today, newly organized additional hubs for IDPs located in residential neighborhoods of Kropyvnytskyi will receive humanitarian aid.

“21 kids were born in the Ukrainian families displaced from Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Odesa regions,” said Andrii Raikovych, head of the Regional State Administration.

Poltava oblast

Based on the session minutes of the Kotelevskiy district court, the occupiers shelling Kharkiv with Grad multi launch rocket system appeared before the court. The prosecution will ask for the maximum imprisonment term for them of 12 years. 

Today, the concert was held on the occasion of Vyshyvanka Day for residents of Poltava and the city guests.

Poltava authorities submitted a list of immovables to be renovated in the region in the amount 110 billion UAH to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. The head of the Poltava regional military administration Dmitry Lunin announced this today during an online briefing with media editors.

Vinnytsia oblast

20K roses from Vinnytsia oblast will decorate war-ravaged cities. On May 19, 3,5K roses were planted in Vinnytsia. Flowers were given to the city by benefactors. Several species were exported abroad. Now they are helping Ukrainian cities, suffering from russian aggression, to blossom. About 20K seedlings have already been donated to Chernihiv and Zhytomyr. Other settlements also made the requests to receive them.

Household appliances from the International Committee of the Red Cross were shipped to Vinnytsia IDP accommodation centers. Shelters received freezers, washing machines, electric kettles, clothes drying presses, microwave ovens and dishes.

Southern regions

Zaporizhzhia oblast

In Zaporizhzhya oblast, there are problems with evacuating civilians to the Ukrainian controlled territory. Thus, on May 19, as of 14.00 in Vasylivka, there were over 1,000 cars in front of the RF checkpoint. The regional authorities are trying to support people who find themselves in a difficult situation and arrange the delivery of water and food.

The opening of the green corridor, which is currently blocked, will be reported additionally.

In the settlements of Zaporizhzhya oblast suffering from shelling by the Russian troops, restoration of damaged housing has started. Construction materials for urgent repairs were provided by the UN.

On the evening of May 18, the Russian invaders shelled the village of Novoyakovlivka in Zaporozhzhia oblast. As a result of shelling, one person was killed, houses were damaged and destroyed and a kindergarten was destroyed.

Kherson oblast

In Kherson, volunteers have created a bank of children’s things and ask concerned citizens to respond to the initiative. They accept things, toys and books. The collected items will be distributed free of charge to residents of Kherson and the oblast.

Mykolaiv Oblast

Yesterday during the day in the Mykolaiv area there were eight fires, Four arose as a result of shelling of the territories of Mykolaiv and Mykolaiv oblast by the Russian army.

The pyrotechnic group removed 11 munitions.

In Mykolaiv, the utilities are working to restore 24-hour water supply to the citizens. Now, over 10 mine wells are checked and cleaned throughout the city. 

Today on the Vyshyvanka Day Mykolaiv newborns were given their first vyshyvanka. 

In one of the medical institutions, the children were given vyshyvanka by Vitaliy Kim, the head of the Mykolaiv Oblast Military Administration, and Maksym Beznosenko, the head of the Department of Health.

Western regions

Volyn oblast

Volyn authorities report that over the past 24 hours, 150 internally displaced persons have been placed in the region.

In total, during the full-scale war in Volhynia, 66,226 internally displaced persons have been resettled.

Another 2,000 places to stay are available in the region.

Lviv

Today, the third modular town for internally displaced persons has been opened in Lviv. About 370 people will receive a temporary home.

The Institute of Culture Strategy and the Theater “Both People and Dolls” will show some performances in modular towns and places of compact residence of internally displaced persons in May and June.

Rivne oblast

A Polish dairy corporation will help to build a dairy cluster in Rivne region. Both humanitarian aid and assistance with equipment are envisaged.

Gas stations of the region resume the sale of gasoline and diesel fuel. Fuel is sold for cash with a limit of 20 liters per vehicle.

Khmelnytsky oblast

In Khmelnitsky, psychologists of the charitable foundation “Karitas” introduced classes for internally displaced persons with special educational needs.

Psychologists, rehabilitologists, social workers will work with children with autism spectrum disorders, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy or epilepsy

Zakarpattia oblast

Today, another batch of Starlink has come to the region. High-speed Internet systems will be distributed among critical infrastructure facilities of the region.

With the assistance of the International Organization for Migration, housing for internally displaced persons will be reconstructed in the region. Attention is paid to the needs of people with disabilities, mothers with children and large families.

Chernivtsi Oblast

With the assistance of the European Union, two checkpoints “Diakivtsi” and “Krasnoilsk” will be opened in Bukovyna. These points will improve the infrastructure for trucks.

About 200 units of medical supplies from the public organization “Ukrainian Peace Foundation” arrived in the oblast. These include oxygen masks, bandages, gloves, surgical instruments, infusion systems, antiseptics, and more.

For the first time in 3 months, a session of the city council was held in Chernivtsi. However, journalists were not allowed to attend the meeting. The session was closed to public access. According to the deputy of the city council Maryna Kyryliuk, the issues of allocating agricultural land to prevent the food crisis in the country and selling land for auction for relocated businesses were considered particularly.
